#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

Today on 26th August’2024 the country is celebrating the festival of ‘Janmashtami’ i.e. the festival of birth of Lord Krishna. As Atul ji would like to put it in his words this is the ‘seventeenth’ ‘janmashtami’ festival for the blog which started in the year 2008. And ‘2008’ was the first ‘janmashtami year’ for this blog. Every year on this occasion we feature here songs related to Lord Krishna. I will be presenting couple of songs on this occasion here.

In this post I am presenting a song from the movie “Balram Shrikrishna-1968”. It was directed Chandrakant for ‘Joy Films’. Chandrakant was also the producer of this movie. This movie which is a ‘mythological genre’ movie was based on Shrimad Bhagwat Katha.

It had Dara Singh, Shahu Modak, Premnath, Nana Palsikar, Randhawa, Azad, Ashish Kumar, Jemini Ganesh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Savitri, Jayshree Gadkar, Geetanjali, Madhumati, Bela Bose, Padma Rani, Sushma, Uma Khosla, Aruna Irani, Sulochana Chatterjee, Babu Raje, Shery, B.M. Vyas, Anand Joshi, Arvind Pandya, Bhalerao, Radheshyam, Pal Sharma and others.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Chaturbhuj Doshi and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pande. Editing of this movie was done by Ram Khade and Vithoba Surve.

“Balram Shrikrishna-1968” has nine songs written by Kavi Pradeep and its music is composed by C. Ramchandra. Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey and Kamal Barot had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

I have neither any recollections of having watched this movie nor any familiarity with its songs songs when I checked the list in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970). However I had presented a song from this movie last year on 22 february 2023. It was then that I got introduced to the songs of this movie. So far three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog.

Today we present the fourth song from this movie “Balram Shrikrishna-1968” on the blog. This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor.

It is a background song and it gets played when the titles of this movie are appearing on the screen, so that way it is a title song too. Lyrics for the today’s song are by Kavi Pradeep who has penned all the songs of this movie. Listening to this song one would get the feeling that it sounds similar to another song that was created later and appeared in the movie ‘Maalik-1972’. This song was penned by lyricist Rajinder Krishan and the lyrics are ‘kanhaiyya kanhaiyya tujhe aanaa padegaa’. While the song under discussion is a ‘request in a mild tone’ to Lord Krishna and Balram to save this land, the song from the movie ‘Maalik’ is more forceful request to Lord Krishna reminding him his promise to save this country whenever ‘there is the total failure of righteousness’ on this land.

The lyricist of this song is Kavi Pradeep. We know him as someone who wore his feelings on his sleeves on matters like socio-political issues around him. In this song , we find him mentioning the burning problems facing India at that time. Apart from drought, shortage of grains, social inequality, traitors around he has also mentioned ‘mehangaayee’ i.e. price rise or inflation. Six years later we had a full-fledged famous song on ‘mehangaayee’ in the movie ‘Roti Kapdaa Aur Makaan-1974’. 🙂 I was born in ‘1968’ and those were the years when I was a growing child, so I had to be oblivious and immune 🙂 from those burning issues. 🙂

Let us now listen to this lesser heard lord Krishna related song.

Song-Is desh kee hai aaj bhee toofaan mein naiyya (Balram Srikrishna)(1968) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Kavi Pradeep, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

is desh kee hai
aaj bhee toofaan mein naiyyaa aa
bharat mein phir se aa jaao
balram kanhaiyya

sab oar padaa sookhaa aa
aadhaa hai desh bhookhaa aa
ghanghor hai mehangaayee ee
jantaa hai tang aayee
galiyon mein bade bade ae
ajgar hain chhipe pade ae
danste hain aaj bhee naag hamein
he naag nathaiyyaa aa
bharat mein phir se aa jaao
balram kanhaiyya

mehlon mein hai diwaalee ee
kutiyon mein raat kaalee ee
kuchh log sukh se jeete ae
baakee aansoo peete ae
ye desh ki soorat hai ae
ab aao zaroorat hai
laakhon sudaamaaon kee hai
sunsaan madhhaiyyaa aa
bharat mein phir se aa jaao
balram kanhaiyya

ye soch rahe hain sabhee ee
aisaa thhaa na waqt kabhee
bachche na doodh paate ae
maan-baap chhatpataate
hey deen bandhu aao o
karunaa ke sindhu aao
kat’tee laakhon har saal yahaan
gopal teree gaiyyaa aa
bharat mein phir se aa jaao
balram kanhaiyya
is desh kee hai
aaj bhee
toofaan mein naiyyaa aa
bharat mein phir se aa jaao
balram kanhaiyya
