Today’s song is from the film Mordhwaj-1952.

Having seen so many Mythological films since early childhood, I got interested in knowing more about our religion and started reading books of religious stories. As such the family atmosphere was also conducive to religious learning, so it actually accentuated my attraction more. Among Ramayan and Mahabharat, I liked Mahabharat more. Lord Krishna, I felt, was more relevant to today’s world, which understands 2 principles….” might is Right’ and ” Tit for tat”.

Another attraction of these films was the trick scenes in them. It was thrilling to see Gods and Rakshasas appearing and disappearing at will, on the screen. From the beginning of silent or Talkie films, filmmakers preferred making Mythological films. The simple reason was the abundance of interesting stories from Ramayan, Mahabharat and the 18 Puranas. The filmmakers never felt the shortage of subjects nor they needed to depend upon the “Story departments” to cook up the stories. Of Course these departments still made a hybrid variety of stories, taking little from various sources.

Major studios like Bombay talkies, Ranjit, Prabhat, Mohan, prakash, Wadia, Filmistan etc made religious films. Films on various Gods and their Bhakts were made. Sometimes some names like Bhakt Bodana, Sant Sakhu, Mordhwaja, Gopal Bhaiyya etc. added new knowledge. I always rued that in the crowd of various Gods, no films were made on Bramha ji or Devi saraswati ji. While writing information about films seen – Mythologicals or socials etc – in my notebooks, I had noticed that some actors, actresses,MDs or directors’ names were common, but they were different individually.

During my school days, such things happened. For example, in my class, there were 8 Joshis,6 Kulkarnis, 6 Deshpandes and 3 Deshmukhs. Usually they were called by their initials like, S.G.deshpande was called only S.G. But in few cases, even the initials were the same, then they were called by their physical attributes, like Lambu Deshpande or Gidda Joshi etc.

This happened in Hindi films too. When there were 2 MDs with the name Iqbal Qureshi, one was called Lambu Iqbal because he was over 6 feet tall and the other was Chhota Iqbal. Actor Asit Sen was ‘Mota Asit Sen’ and the director Asit Sen was called Chhota Asit Sen. But what to do when there were 6 Nalinis, 4 Noorjehans, 4 Rajkumaris, 2 Jagmohans, 2 Trilok kapoors etc ? The problem came in listing their filmographies, which got mixed up due to the same names.

Irresponsible Internet sites and immature writers unabashedly increased their film credits by mixing up. There was a site called gomolo.com (now extinct). It listed the name of Meenakshi Seshadri as the Heroine of film Brahmachari-1938 instead of Meenakshi Shirodkar ! Even Meenakshi Seshadri’s mother may not have been born in 1938 ! Likewise, when Shamshad Begum-mother of actress Naseem Bano and grandmother of Saira Bano died, many sites and enthusiastic writers declared that the singer Shamshad Begum had died ! (the singer died in 2013).

In today’s film Mordhwaj-1952, there were 2 such cases of misleading names. One was its Music Director – Narayan Dutt, who was confused with the more famous MD, N.Dutta (Dutta Naik). The other name was Shashi Kapoor, who was mistaken for the other famous actor Shashi Kapoor-brother of Raj Kapoor. Mordhwaj-1952 was the Debut movie of Narayan Dutt. Many people may not be even aware that any MD by the name of NARAYAN DUTTA existed, but in reality he did and has contributed to Hindi film Music to the best of opportunities that he got to do so. NARAYAN DUTTA, I feel, was one of those unlucky composers like, C.Arjun, Sailesh Mukherjee, Daan singh, Sardar Malik, Jamal Sen, Pardesi etc, who had enough talent but luck was not in their favour.

Most internet sites and few writers also get confused between these two MDs, thinking that N.Datta means Narayan Dutta . Consequently, films in which Narayan Dutta gave music are coolly added to the filmography of N.Datta !

NARAYAN DUTTA was born in Bilawas village in Jodhpur state. His father Durgaprasad was the Court Singer (Raj Gayak) with Bikaner king Ganga Singh. Narayan learnt music from his father since childhood. With a desire to sing in Hindi films, like many other such dreamers, he reached the Mayanagari-Bombay in 1946.

He sang his first song for Raj Kapoor in “Neelkamal”-1947. However the commercial record of this song was made with the composer’s voice- Snehal Bhatkar. Then he sang two songs, one with Geeta and one with Mukesh in Rasili-47. With the help of Kidar Sharma he sang songs in Sehra-48, Gauna-49 and Uddhar-49, in addition to some stunt films of Mohan Pictures, but no records were made.

Somehow, he felt that there was not much scope for singing so he turned to composing and his first film was Mordhwaj-52, followed by Astik-56,Shyam ki Jogan-57,Naya Kadam-58 and Pujarin -72 (in the period 58-72,his few films remained incomplete like Aji bas rahne do, Meerabai, Bhakta Pralhad etc.) Narad Leela-72,Jai Hanuman-73,Seetaram Radheshyam-73, Saraswati-Laxmi-Parvati-75, Sindoor ka Daan-84 and Humse mile tum-86. In addition to these 11 Hindi films, he also gave music to 3 Rajasthani films- Baba Ramdev Peer-63,Mhari Pyari Chanana-83 and Nanibai ko Bhayro-84.

After films stopped coming, he engaged himself in making NFS based on local folk tunes. He also composed songs for Jain Samaj and Rajneesh Foundation. He established ” Sur Tarang” , a school to teach Music.

This talented but unlucky composer died on 16-6-1988. ( Based on an article by Shri Murlidhar Soni ji, in Listener’s Bulletin No. 76 Feb 1989, with thanks and my own notes.)

The other Same Name was SHASHI CHAND KAPOOR, son of film producer F C Kapoor, younger brother of film script writer Ravi Kapoor and a cousin of singer Mahendra Kapoor. He was born on 7-9-1934 at Bombay.

Being a sweet good looker, he did a minor role in Lady Doctor-1944. In the next 11 years, he acted in 21 films till 1955. His Filmography is- Lady Doctor(1944), Parakh(1944), Meena(1944), Bachpan(1945), Tadbir(1945), Dr, Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani(1946), Renuka(1947), Bhakta Dhruv(1947), Bhakta Gopal Bhaiya(1948), Shaheed(1948), Sati Ahalya(1949), Ram Darshan(1950), Samadhi(1950), Veer Babruwahan(1950), Murliwala(1951), Mordhwaj(1952), Sanskaar(1952), Dana Pani(1953), Mahapooja(1954), Parvati Vivah and his last film Bhagwat Mahima in 1955.

After this he stopped working in films. He was more interested in studying maths. He graduated in 1955, completed his MSc in 1957 and LL.b in 1963,from Bombay University. Meanwhile he worked as Lecturer in Wilson college, Kirti college and in State bank of India during 1958 to 1963. He then left for the USA and did his Ph.D. from Western Michigan University.

In this University, he worked as a Faculty member in Maths from 1967 to 1996. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1997. He is happily settled in the USA.

Most of the films Shashi Chand acted in are credited to Shashi Kapoor, as he was more famous, from a major filmi family and also because Shashi Chand Kapoor was not here to clarify the facts.
But for his own appearance on the Internet and hard work by Cineplot and Maitri Manthan sites, by interviewing him on-line, the matter would not have been clarified, to the general public. So, next time Remember, the real child star was SHASHI CHAND KAPOOR and not Shashi kapoor !

Film Mordhwaj-1952 was directed by Balwant Bhatt- elder brother of the more famous director nanabhai Bhatt. The Lyricist was Bharat Vyas and the cast of the film was Prem adib, Durga Khote, Ramsingh, Tiwari, shashi Kapoor Sr., manju, Neeru etc. The story of the film was……

Prince Suchitra, son of Raja Mordhwaj, of Ratnapur, goes for daily hunting accompanied by his friend Kaak. His attention is drawn by the sudden flight of a horse with a youngish rider on it. Reaching nearby finds that a lion is lying dead and another is out to leap on the rider. A well aimed arrow from his bow takes life out of the creature and it reels back dead. Suchitra tries to be friendly while the saved rider cares to keep up only formalities.

In the course of their short company the prince happens to know that his companion is none other than princess Vijaya of Srimantapur. Love takes root in both the hearts and fixed meetings follow thereafter. Yudhishtira the Pandava King of Hastinapur, decides to perform Ashwamedh Yajna. The sacrificial horse moves in the direction of Ratnapur throwing open challenges to the heroism of independent states. Huge armies of Hastinapur with mighty Arjun at their head, stand guarantee to the safety of the advancing horse. All must accept Pandavas’ sovereignty or fight.

The whole Ratnapur is astir. King Mordhwaj, by nature, does not want war but the people refuse to surrender. Representatives of the people meet in Sudharma Sabha and decide to stop the horse and accept the challenge. Prince Suchitra heads the people’s cause. Very soon the news gets currency in the neighbouring states. Princess Vijaya too decides to follow in the footsteps of prince Suchitra. The advance of the sacrificial horse-the symbol of pandavas challenge, is arrested at the border of Ratnapur. A fierce battle ensues for which the king prays and the prince fights. The armies of the Pandavas are routed out and their leader Arjun is injured and defeated on the battlefield. Lord Krishna, accompanied by sage Narad, comes to Arjun’s war camp. The sage attributes the defeat of Arjun’s armies to the unsurpassed devotion of king Mordhwaj, he also asserts that devotion weighed heavier than friendship with Lord Krishna, Arjun does not accept this plea and presses for solid proof. Lord Krishna takes Arjun with him garbed as Sadhus to Raja Mordhwaj and asks for the flesh of his son to feed a hungry lion. The king does not refuse the Brahmin beggars and agrees to sacrifice his only son. Arjun looks horrified and retires from the arena totally defeated. He admits the supremacy of the devotees’ claims over his own. Lord Krishna, affected by his devotee’s most thrilling sacrifice, blesses their son to life. He and His party consisting of Arjuna and sage Narada, appear in their true forms.

Let us now enjoy the Trio song, sung by Asha Bhosle, Mubarak Begum and Dilip Kumar Roy- who is none other than Dilip Dholakia, MD and singer.

(aa aa aa aa)
hua un sang hamraa pyaar re

aaj mere jee van upwan mein ae ae ae
aise aandhee aayee
pushp hiley pallav doley
kaliyon ne lee angdaayee
kisee ke maadak nainon ne
maanik madiraa chhalkaayee
bujh na sake saagar ke jal se
aisee aag lagaayee
pati(?) se bach ley
jeewan ka uphaar re
ye humne diyaa
ye humne dkiyaa

(o o o o o )
unko man ka vyopaar(?) re

baadal se varshaa miltee hai
ae ae ae
aur miley deep sang baatee
koi bataa de mujhe milenge
kyaa mere man ke saathhee
geet kahin koi kehta isko kaar re
hum kaahe ko chhupaayen

(o o o o o)
jee hum kaahe ko chhupaayen
(o o o o o)
hua un sang hamra pyaar re

jeewan mein koyee ee ee ee
jeewan mein koyee ee ee ee
chupke se aa gayaa jee
chupke se aa gayaa
praanon ko praanon se
chhoo ke jagaa gayaa jee
chhoo ke jagaa gayaa

tum hum jaanen
kyaa jaane sansaar re
hum kaahe ko chhupaayen jee
hum kaahe ko bataayen
hua un sang hamra pyaar re
