Today’s song is from a hit film ‘Gunsundari’ (1948).

What is the formula to make a hit film ? No one ever had any answer for this question, so far in the film industry. Had there been an answer, 99 % of films would have been hits. However, in my opinion, there could be only one answer – LUCK ! Even if you analyse all the hit films till today, I doubt if the right answer could be found.

One thing is certain. If you ask the question “what type of film would you like to see” ?, then possibly everyone can answer this question. My answer to this question would be “the story must be simple, good music, some humour and a Happy Ending is what would please me in a cinema.” Film ‘Gunsundari’ (1948) was one such film. The story was simple, there was a built in humour, 3 MDs and 5 Singers made melodious songs and the film had a happy ending ! No doubt it was a hit film in that tumultuous period of the post Independence era.

As such, ‘Gunsundari’ story and the film has an interesting history. Chandulal Shah (later owner of Ranjit Studios), had first directed this silent movie ‘Gunsundari’, in 1927 under the banner of Kohinoor film company, Bombay. Even in those days it was a popular film.

After talkie films started and Chandulal Shah had established his own studio in partnership with Gauharjan Mamajiwala, a heroine of several of his films and his consort for the next 40 years. He remade the film ‘Gunsundari’ once again in 1934. The cast of the 1934 film was the same as the 1927 silent film, namely Gauhar, Raja Sandow, Rampyari, RN Vaidya etc. Somehow Chandulal Shah had been fascinated by the film’s story.

After Ranjit studio and Sardar Chandulal Shah were in financial crisis (having lost 1 cr 25 lakhs in cotton trading, in one single day) and most of their properties were mortgaged, Producer Director Ratibhai Hemchander Punatar who was Chandulal’s sister’s son and his chela, decided to make film ‘Gunsundari’ once again.

This time the film was made in Gujarati and Hindi simultaneously. The year was 1947. Due to partition etc the film was delayed and was released only in 1948.

Ratibhai had selected Kokila Balsara aka Nirupa Roy as the new heroine. After the shooting started, she was signed by Chandulal Shah for Ranjit’s film ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’. Since ‘Gunsundari’ was delayed, ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’ (1947) got released first and it became Nirupa Roy’s first Hindi film as a Heroine.

I remember having seen the film ‘Gunsundari’ of 1948 sometime in the early 1950s. The story was indeed very interesting for those times. A village simple girl is married to a modern type educated rich boy. He does not like this uneducated gaon ki gori and he abandons her. The rest of the story is about how the girl gets educated and learns all modern things, yet impresses her in-laws with her traditional ways (unknown to the husband) and how she wins him back successfully.

Later on, as is the practice of Hindi film industry, this theme was used in umpteen number of Hindi and various regional languages. This film was remade in Telugu as ‘Gunsundari Katha’ in 1949 itself.

This was also the First film of Nirupa Roy and Manhar Desai. Manhar was originally from a Goan family settled in Ahmedabad and his name was Malcolm Alfredo D’souza – a converted Christian). Later this pair starred in many Hindi and Gujarati films.

There were many films made on one story with the same title….

Gunsundari- 1927, 1934 and 1948 ( Gohar in first 2 films.)

Devdas- 1934 (Bangla), 1935 (Hindi) and 1955 ( I am not counting Shahrukh’s film) and many in different languages.

Anarkali- 1928, 1935 and 1953 ( Sulochana-Ruby Myers- acted in all three. In the first two films, she was Anarkali. In the third, she did a character role.)

Khazanchi-1941 and 1958 ( Manorama acted in both films.)

Off hand, I remember only these films, where the story and Title were the same. There may be more such cases.

There are umpteen number of film remakes on the same story, but with different Titles and casts. Some examples I remember at this moment are…

Panghat-1943 was remade as Chitchor-1976. Later films were remade in Telugu as Ammayi Manasu , in Malayalam as Minda Poochakku Kalyanam and in Tamil as Ullam Kavarntha Kalvan. It was also an inspiration for the 1997 Bengali film Sedin Chaitramas and the 2003 film Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.

Pugree-1948 was remade as Dil, Duniya, Daulat-1972.

Aurat-40 and Mother India-57 ( Kanhaiyalal acted in both versions).

Mala-41 and Amar-54 (Jayant acted in both. Naushad gave music to both)

Grihasthi-48 and Ghar basake dekho-63

Malkin-53 and Biradari-66

Geeta-40 ( Chandramohan did double role of Father and son), Ustad-57 (Ashok kumar did the double role) and Karmyogi-78( Rajkumar did double role)

Sangram-50 and Shakti-82

Kismet-43 and Bandhe Haath-73

School Master-59, Zindagi-76 and Baadbaan-2003. There are many more such films, which the readers may be knowing. I am not counting films made by Master Bhagwan, Nasir Hussain or Manmohan Desai, who were experts in making hit films with different names but one basic story- with little changes here and there.

Film Gunsundari-1948 was made by Ajit Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by Ratibhai Punatar and its cast consisted of Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Dulari, Nazeera, Ibrahim, Saraswati and others including 3 funny names…. Chhagan Romeo, Jalejar Writer and Mister Pransukh !

Ratibhai Punatar was Chandulal Shah’s close relative and his chela. He directed only 6 Hindi films – Gunsundari-48, Nanad Bhojai-48, Nili-50,Mann ka meet-50, Bahadur-53 and Daughter of Sindbad-58. He also directed 5 Gujarati films-all blockbusters and grossers. The Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema says about him…..

Ratilal Hemchand Punatar (b. 1913) Gujarati-Hindi director aka Ratibhai Punatar. Born in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Production manager at Ranjit. Directorial début when, following the spectacular success of Ranakdevi (1946), Ranjit started subsidiary Ajit Pics to exploit the interest in Gujarati films. First major film, Gunsundari, remade Chandulal Shah’s pathbreaking silent film and remains, with Mehndi Rang Lagyo (1960) and Jesal Toral (1971), one of the Gujarati cinema’s biggest hits, the first one to tap a substantial urban audience for a Gujarati cinema until then restricted to semi-urban B film circuits. Third film Mangal Phera was also very successful, and continued the Gunsundari and Nanand Bhojai theme of a crumbling joint-family system faced with the values of a mercantile economy. Also made films based on Prabhulal Dwivedi’s folk theatre (Gadano Bel) and on e.g. D.N. Madhok’s popular novels.

Today’s song is a rare song, in the sense that its full version was not available anywhere. YouTube has 3-4- videos of this song, but they are all incomplete. I was after this song since many months. Finally, I contacted my friend and ASAD’s well wisher Deepak Choudhari ji. He very kindly provided me the song’s full audio version. This was kindly uploaded by our own Sadanand ji Kamath, as usual, on my request. My sincere thanks to both of them.

The melodious song is composed by Bulo C Rani and is sung by an young and a new singer of 1948- Geeta Roy. Let us enjoy the song now….

Arun ji,

I heard this song for the first time. and liked it for its rendition by Geeta Dutt , lyrics and the musical composition. The mukhda of the song sounded familiar to me. Probably, this was the typical of that period where the relationship between nanand and bhojai was transcripted into a song. Later, I came to know that a traditional thumri, ‘Nanandiya kaahe maare bol’ was sung by first, Mukhtar Begum and later Begum Akhtar, videos of which are available on YouTube.

Thanks for additional information.
