Regulars on this blog are aware that I am big fan of ‘Qawwaalee songs’ from Hindi films as well as non-film qawwaalees. However I have so far presented ‘qawwaalees’ from Hindi films only on this blog.

Recently when I was listening some ‘qawwaalee’ songs sung by Jaani Babu Qawwaal, I came across this wonderful ‘qawwaalee’ song. It came as a shock to me that it was not yet featured on this blog.

This ‘qawwaalee’ is from the movie ‘Chaar Darvesh-1964’.

“Chaar Darvesh-1964” was directed by Homi Wadia for ‘Basant-Wadia Brothers Productions, Bombay’. It had Sayeeda Khan, Feroz Khan, Naaz, Ratnamala, Jeevankala, Amarnath, Mukri, Sundar, Azeem, Wazeer Muhammad Khan, Pal Sharma, B.M. Vyas, Sardar Mansoor, Nazeer Kashmiri, Dalpat, Mustafa, Bismillah, Master Nisar, Khan Mastana, Bawra Ismail, Mohammad Ali, Ghani, Yadav, Korega, Juliyaan, Geeta, Ratan, Paro, Bela, Dinaz Bana, Rover (Dog) and others. Geet Kosh mentions this movie as movie from the genre of ‘stunt movies’. It was mentioned by Atul jee in his post that this movie is a ‘quintessentially ‘B’ grade movie having an ‘Arabian Nights’ kind of a tale’.

This movie “Chaar Darvesh” has seven songs in it (including one two part song which is the song under discussion). Tough HFGK mentions is as a two-part song the picturisation suggests it to be one continuous song. Four lyricists contributed the as lyricist for this movie viz. Anjaan (two songs), Raja Mehndi Ali Khan (three songs), and Saba Fazli (one part of today’s song). Geet Kosh mentions Jeet Jaipuri as the fourth lyricist for this movie, it doesn’t mention his name for any song, and part-1 of this song is left un-credited in Geet Kosh. Music for this movie was composed by G.S. Kohli.

The picturisation of the song shows us devotees singing in a ‘dargaah’. Mohd Rafi and Jaani Babu Qawwal are the singers of this song accompanied by chorus. I am unable to identify other actors lip singing this song except Feroz Khan.

Today 25th September’2024 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of Feroz Khan (born on 25.09.1939 and passed away on 27th April 2009). He began his career as an actor in ‘B’ grade movies and within a few years he became a Producer and director of hit movies. People like me who grow up in the seventies got to see many of his movies and for me his movie ‘Khotey Sikke’ is his unforgetteble memory of those years with its’ song ‘jeewan mein tu darnaa naheen’… .

His other movies that I watched during those years, which I vividly remember are, movies like ‘Nagin’, ‘Khoon Aur Paani’, ‘Kabeela’, ‘Shankar-Shambhu’, ‘Qurbaani’ etc. I have always loved to watch him on screen and enjoyed his movies a lot. Today on his birth anniversary we pay our tributes to him on this blog.

Let us now enjoy this song which, as I said above, is such a wonderful song to listen to. Unfortunately the lyricists name(s) are not confirmed except for part -2 which starts from ‘tu hai ik shammaa to …’ , is Saba Fazli as per HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970). Music is composed by G.S. Kohli.

Song-Tere karam ki dhoom jahaan mein kahaan naheen(Chaar Darvesh)(1964) Singers-Rafi, Jaani Babu Qawwaal, Lyrics-Saba Fazli-Jeet Jaipuri (?), MD-G S Kohli
Chorus

Lyrics

saaree duniyaa tere
jalwe kee tamannaayee hai ae
jaise jannaa aa aa aa aat tere
koonche mein utar aayee hai ae ae

aa aa aa aa aa aa aa

tere karam kee dhoom
jahaan mein kahaan naheen
o jahaan mein kahaan naheen
tere nisaar tujhsaa koyee
meharbaan naheen
ho koi meharbaan naheen
tere karam kee dhoom

qismat kee uljhanon se
ab uktaa gayaa hoon main
is zindagee ke bojh se
ghabraa gayaa hoon main
ye soch kar hee dar pe tere
aa gayaa hoon main
daataa

aa gayaa hoon main
murshad aa gayaa hoon main aen aen
aen
ke tujhse chhupee huyee to
meree daastaan naheen

o
meree daastaan naheen

tere karam kee dhoom

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aan
halchal see ho rahee hai
mere dil ke aas paas
shaayid ke aa gayaa hoon main
manzil ke aas paas
pyaasaa khadaa huaa hoon main
saahil ke aas paas
saahil ke aas paas
daataa saahil ke aas paas
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
ab to mere huzoor
koyee imtehaan naheen
ho koyee imtehaan naheen
tere karam kee dhoom
jahaan mein kahaan naheen
o jahaan mein kahaan naheen
tere nisaar tujhsaa koyee
meharbaan naheen
ho koi meherbaan naheen
tere karam kee dhoom

tu hai ik shammaa to
laakhon tere parwaane hain
tere qurbaan
tere naam ke deewaane hain
jalwe aankhon mein to
lab par tere afsaane hain
bhool kar hasti ko apnee tujhe
pehchaane hain
apnee rudaad sunaane ke liye
aayaa hoon

bigdee taqdeer banaane ke liye
aayaa hoon
tishnagee dil kee bujhaane ke liye
aayaa hoon

dil ka har zakhm dikhaane ke liye
aayaa hoon
dil ko tasqeen naheen
rooh ko aaraam naheen

mujhsaa is duniyaa mein
shaayid koyee nakaam naheen
ya to bigdee huyee
taqdeer banaa de meree ee

yaa ye keh de
teree duniyaa mein
meraa kaam naheen

aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
pyaasaa khadaa huaa hoon main
saahil ke aas paas

saahil ke aas paas
o saahil ke aas paa aa aas
ab to mere huzoor

koyee imtehaan naheen
o koyee imtehaan naheen

tere karam kee dhoom
jahaan mein kahaan naheen
o jahaan mein kahaan naheen

(aa aa aa aa aa aa)

tere nisaar tujhsaa koyee
meherbaan naheen
ho koyee meherbaan naheen
tere karam kee dhoom

My sincere thanks to Avinash ji, for the write-up about this legendary Qawwali song. It is indeed a great service that Atul ji has initiated, by way of this Blog, for people interested in knowing about the lost and about to being lost, songs. It might be possible now to find the songs on YouTube, but what we get additionally, is generosity of contributors to this Blog. Sincere thanks once again, for all that is reaching us, which is, I feel, so precious.

Thank you Avinashji for this song featuring Feroz Khan on his birth anniversary.
I feel he was a great looking person with a very different personality from actors of the time when he made his debut. What Swag, what style? He was a style personified

Thanks a lot Peevesie’s Mom jee for liking this presentation and your comments thereof.

Feroz Khan had his own style among so many stars of that era and watching him on screen was always enjoyable.
