Songs from Artiste Name Films….Second Season….No. 9
————————————————-

Today’s song is from the film Noor Mahal-1965.

from the film title, can you guess who is today’s star of the post in this series ? Difficult to guess correctly. It is not about noorjehan, remember. While I discuss matters about this film and other aspects, you keep guessing about today’s star !

Film Noor Mahal-65 was made by Ratan productions and the film was directed by Nausheer Engineer. This was a Costume film dealing with the age old story of ‘ king, queen, wicked vizier and a lover couple ‘. Possibly this was one of the last such pictures in the late 60’s decade. The trend of films had changed drastically in the 60’s and this type of films had lost its audience now. The director Nausheer Engineer had directed 7 films in his career – all in C grade category. The films were, Inteqam-47, Shamsheerbaaz-53, Carnival queen-55, Diler Daku-57, Circus queen-59, Chini jaadugar-59 and his last film was Noor mahal-1965. There were two earlier films with the same title, one in 1934 and the other in 1954.

An interesting point about today’s film was its Music Director- Jaani Babu Qawwal ( arrangers Sonik-omi). He was born in 1935 at Hinganghat, maharashtra. His real full name was Jaan Mohammed Jani babu. He was known as a good qawwal. He came into films and acted in 9 films, but he sang 40 songs in 30 films. He also tried his hand at being a Music Director. His first attempt was today’s film ” Noor Mahal-1965 ‘. All the 6 songs in this film ( I have heard them all) were very good and 2 qawwalis from this film-including today’s qawwali- became popular. Despite providing good music, he did not get any film as an MD. Maybe because Sonic-Omi had left him. He managed to get two more Muslim religious film somehow – Qoobat E Parwardigaar-78 and Aulia E Islam-79. That was the end of his stint as an MD. His one qawwali ” Mehangai maar gayee” from the film Roti Kapda aur Makan-74 is remembered even today. Jani Babu Qawwal died on 28-1-2008.

The other famous qawwal in films was Shakeela Banu Bhopali. She was multitalented. She acted in 32 films, but sang only 4 songs in 3 films. She too gave music to just 1 film-‘ Maze Le Lo’- 1975. She died on 16-12-2002. These were the only well known qawwals who were active in various film fields.

The cast of the film Noor Mahal-35 was Chitra, Jagdeep, Tiwari, Lalita Desai, W.M.Khan, madhumati and others. One of the cast was Wazir Mohammed Khan aka W.M.khan. He is another interesting person associated with this film. W.M.Khan had the unique honour of being the First ever Male singer in In the Hindi talkie films of india. he had done the role of a Faqir in film ‘ Alam Ara ‘-1931, the first indian Talkie film, in which he had sung a song on screen himself-” de de khuda ke naam pe”. In his 42 years of film career, he acted in 105 films and sang 6 songs in 4 films-namely Alam ara-31, Sair E Paristan-34, Dard E dil-34 and Alam Ara -56. He had also sung, on screen, the famous song ” Aye mere watan ” in the film Kabuliwala-1961.

An Interesting thing about him is that he began his career in Talkie films with ‘Alam Ara’-1931 and ended also with the film Alam Ara-1973. In between, he acted in another version of Alam Ara in 1956, in which he sang the same song from the 1931 film again. But alas, both times, no record was issued on both occasions. Now none of those two films are available to see and enjoy !

Today’s song is sung by Usha Timothy and others. Usha Timothy, born on 8-10-1949, sang only 56 songs in 50 films. Later on she focussed on stage shows and multinational tours with few groups. She had created a stir in the industry by claiming that the famous Patriotic song ” aye mere watan ke logon “, sung famously by Lata Mangeshkar ( and which, reportedly, brought tears to Pandit Nehru’s eyes) was sung by her much earlier than lata, in a stage show conducted by C.Ramchandra himself. This was claimed by her, after the death of C.Ramchandra and could never be corroborated by anyone else. This matter was also discussed fiercely on the RMIM forum some years back.

The story of film Noor mahal-1965 was a concoction of several earlier stunt films. It was woven around a wicked brother, who kills his elder brother-the King. He also tries to kill the queen, the son and a daughter, but some loyal sardar escapes with the children. Cut to 20 years later….The brother now remembers that the king’s children were betrothed to a son and daughter of his friend. He then kills the friends and locks up the son. The daughter , however.
, pretends to love him and marry him. A masked girl rescues the son and they dutifully fall in love, sing songs etc. They are the real betrothed ones. All is well when the brother king is killed and the son becomes the King.

So much for the film. Now we return to our star of the post in this series. This is an actress about whom hardly anybody knows.

In the name of the film Noor Mahal is hidden a name of an actress…NOOR. (short for Noorjahan).

Have you any idea who this actress is ? Yes, she became the wife of comedian Johnny Walker. Born on 21-7-1940, she was the second of the 3 sisters. The eldest was Shakila, then Noor and lastly Nasreen. All 3 sisters joined films, but Shakila was the most famous and had a longer career span than the sisters.
Noor debuted as the child star singing the famous song,” Udan khatole pe ud jaun’ in the film Anmol Ghadi-46. Along with her the other child artist debutant was M.Kabir ( later father of actress Sonam). Then came Dard-47. In both these films, she was credited as Noor Mahal, but after this in all subsequent films, she was billed as Noor only. Noor acted in 16 films. They were Anmol Ghadi-46, Dard-47, khubsurat-52, Baghi-53, Do bigha zameen-53, Laila-54, Noor Mahal-54, khushboo-54, Aarpaar-54 ( singing Main na pyar karungi ), Naukri-54 ( as Kishore kumar’s sister, singing ‘ Chhota sa ghar hoga’ ), Mast Qalandar-55, Shahi chor-55, Sakhi hatim-55, Lutera-55, Heer-56 and Chand ki duniya-59. The last two films got delayed releases.

During the film Aarpaar-54, she acted in a very popular song,’ are na na na Tauba Tauba, main naa pyar karungi”, along with comedian Johnny Walker. Johnny fell in love with her and they got married in 1955. After marriage she stopped taking films anymore. The couple had 3 daughters and 3 sons. All 3 sons studied in the USA, all 3 daughters were married off before Johnny’s retirement from films. She stays in her bungalow, ” Noor Villa ” (as good as Noor Mahal !) in Andheri, Mumbai.

Now let us enjoy this very good qawwali.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 134 # Qawwalis – 11 #
———————————————–

Today’s qawwali is from the ‘1979’ movie ‘Auliyaa E Islaam’. Music for this movie was composed by Jaani Babu Qawwal the famous qawwali singer and composer of yesteryears.

Any discussion on Qawwalis either from Hindi movies or non-film music is incomplete without the mention of Jaani Babu Qawwal. He has left an indelible mark in Qawwali singing and in the history of Hindi film music. In Hindi movies there may not be many movies where he had sung or composed music for. But whatever he has composed or sung is unforgettable. He will always be remembered and whoever listens to his creations is surely going to fall in love with his voice and singing.

I have been longing to share a brief write-up with biographical information about Jaani Babu Qawwal, but it has taken time and I will be presenting it separately in the future.

For today’s presentation I am presenting a qawwali from the movie ‘Auliyaa E Islaam-1979’ (or Aulea-e-Islaam) was directed by A. Shamsheer for ‘Roopesh Film Combines, Bombay’.

It was produced by Ram Gopal Gupta and Ram Kishan Gupta. It had Farida Jalal, Tabrez, Imtiaz Khan, Soniya Sahni, Naaz, Jairaj, Nazir Hussain, Paro, Master Amjad and Rajendra Nath, Hakeem ji, Husn Bano, Shefali Choudhary and Master Tinoo, Mirza Musharaf, Khalifa, Usman, Ramesh Dubey, supported by Shatrujeet, Jagdish Raj, Rajan Haksar, Birbal. Mehmood, Padma Khanna, Keshto Mukherjee and Mukri had special appearances in this movie.

A Shamsheer the director of this movie was also the writer of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Krishan Sachdev.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.08.1979.

This movie had as many as eleven songs, a good number of them being qawwalis (nine, if I am correct).

This movie had qawwalis by Shankar-Shambhu, Jaani Babu, Yusuf Azad, Chhote Yusuf, Abdur Rab Chaush, Rashid Hairan, Aziz Warsi and Aziz Nazaan.

Lyrics for this movie were written by Gauhar Kanpuri, Vikar Nagari, Kamil, and Khurshid Anwar.

As mentioned above music for this movie was composed by Jaani Babu.

Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Anuradha, Shankar-Shambhu, Jaani Babu, Yusuf Azad, Chhote Yusuf, Abdur Rab Chaush, Rashid Hairan, Aziz Warsi and Aziz Nazaan had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song or qawwali is sung by Jaani Babu and Shankar – Shambhu. This is a background song with the movie titles on the screen.

Let us now enjoy this wonderful qawwali.

With today’s song this movie ‘Aulia- E- Islaam’ makes its debut on the blog …

(During the preparation of this post I listened to some more songs of this movie and some of them are good qawwalis not to be missed.

Missing Films of 1960s – 110
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Coming into the home stretch now. 110 films from 1960s added during this series. Some of them have been so rare that no information even is available about them. Like today’s film – ‘Black Arrow’ from 1965.

Geet Kosh, the major source of all information on Hindi films of those decades, provides us with the following details. The film is produced under the banner of Ameer Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Mehmood. It is not clear whether this is the same person as the comedian Mehmood that we are all so familiar with. The film is listed as a costume drama. The film poster that is available online indicates this film to be of the ‘zorro’ genre – a masked rider wearing a black cape and a black hat and riding a black horse – gives an impression of a zorro clone type film.

The star cast is listed as Hercules, Chandrakala, SK Shyam, Anjum, Funny Walker, Jilani, Hameeda Bano, Sadhana Khote, Khurshid Khan, Nazeer Kashmiri, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, and Jaani Babu qawwaal.

Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film. All the songs are written by Aziz Ghaazi. Now this name, although not new on the blog, does not have any information associated with it. We have four songs by this songwriter on the blog. In the Geet Kosh listings, I could locate 29 songs written him, for 9 films, from 1958 to 1969. Then, in our blog, his name appears again for a film in 1987 – ‘Tarzan And Cobra’. That makes 10 films that are known to have his name connected with. Almost all films that he has written for are stunt and costume drama films, as their names would suggest – ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958), ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ (1960), ‘Diler Haseena’ (1960), ‘Night Bird’ (1961), ‘Black Arrow’ (1965), ‘Noor Mahal’ (1965), ‘Tarzan And Hercules’ (1966), ‘Tarzarn Aur Jaadui Chiraagh’ (1966), ‘Sakhi Lutera’ (1969), and ‘Tarzan And Cobra’ (1987). So far this is all the information that I have been able to locate about this obscure songwriter.

The previous song written by Aziz Ghazi and posted on our blog, is a qawwaali in the voices of Mubarak Begum and Jaani Babu Qawwaal – “Adaayen Teer Hain Andaaz Barchhi Bhaale Hain” from the film ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958). And again today, we have another qawwaali sung by the same singers. As I have been surveying the landscape of 1960s films and songs, I realize that the qawwaali has been a very popular song type used in the films, all the way from mid 1950s to around end 1970s. So much that every third or fourth film, especially if it is a stunt type B/C grade film, contains a qawaali. Many of them are quite obscure, unavailable. And those which are available, are not much heard. Maybe because they belong to obscure films. But the qawwaalis, in themselves, are superb creations that have gone unnoticed and are lost to the listeners. It may be an idea to do another series of such unfamiliar qawwaalis from that era. (Aah. . . plans. . .) 😉

Let’s listen to this ‘nok jhonk’ qawaali, a very obscure and a rare song. This is the only song that is available for this film, in public domain. It appears that other songs were probably not released on gramophone records. Small mercies – that this one long qawwaali is now available.

Given the list of actors, my intuition says that this qawwaali is performed on screen by Shakeela Bano Bhopali, lip syncing for the back ground voice of Mubarak Begum, and Jaani Babu Qawwaal, singing for himself.

Another interesting point that comes to mind, as I listened to an prepare the lyrics. Per our earlier discussions, and Atul ji’s observations, a nok-jhonk type of song always ends in an agreement between the parties. In other words, it takes about three minutes for the jhagda to end and friendship to begin. This being a qawaali, the protagonists are taking longer to make their points. However the agreement is reached, albeit it arrives after six minutes. Oh well, it is a qawwaali after all. 🙂

Song – Jhoothe Ho Jhoothe Tum Ishq Waale  (Black Arrow) (1965) Singer – Mubarak Begum, Jaani Babu Qawwaal, Lyrics – Aziz Ghazi, MD – Iqbal
Mubarak Begum + Jaani Babu Qawwaal
Female Chorus
Male Chorus

Lyrics

nazar aate ho tum

jaaiye jaaiye in baaton mein rakha kya hai
haa aaa aaa aaa aaaa
tum se harjaai ki. . .
ulfat ka bharosa kya hai. . .
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

tum ne har baat ko afsaana bana kar chhoda
jis ko chaaha us ko deewaana banaa kar chhoda

kehte hain zamaane waale. . .
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

hum na hotey to zamaane mein andhera hota
dard ka ranj ka nafrat ka basera hota
husn se apne nazaaron ki sajaaya hum ne
pyaar kya hota hai ye tum ko bataaya hum ne
haa aaa aaa aaa aaaa
ishq mein mit gaye par lab na hilaaya hum ne. . .
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
jhoothe ho jhhoothe tum ishq waale
dil tod daala hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

hum na hotey to ye shokhi na masti hoti
husn ki duniya pe hasrat hi barasti hoti
pyaar kar ke tumhen magroor banaaya hum ne
dilbari ka har ek andaz sikhaaya hum ne
haaaa aaaa aaaaa aaaaaaa
ishq ki raah mein
dil apna jalaaya hum ne. . .
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala
ho dil ke kale tum husn waale
dil tum ne chheena hamaara
maar daala arey maar daala

pyaar ke naam pe tum mil ke daghaa detey ho
tum wafaadaari ki inaam sazaa detey ho
tum ne chhoda hai mohabbat mein sahaara de kar
tukde dil kar diya hai tum ne hamaara le kar
aaj to gusse mein sarkaar nazar aate ho
khich ke tum aur bhi talwaar nazar aate ho
maan letey hain chalo pyaar tumhaara sachchaa
aao mil jaao ye jhagda nahin hota achhaa
baat taqraar ki dekho na zabaan par laao
saaz e dil chhed ke ulfat ke taraane gaao

hum hain tumhaare
tum ho hamaare
dil ko mila hai sahaara
pyaar ka har taraf hai ujaala

Blog Day : 3651 Post No. : 14500

With well over fourteen thousand plus songs and counting, blog century post is a keenly looked forward to occasion for the blog. It signifies the achievement of yet another century for the blog.

With this song, we achieve one more century for the blog, namely century number 145. In other words, this post is song post number 14500 for the blog.

Under normal circumstances, a century landmark is often the main show in the blog, but this time it finds itself relegated to the status of a sideshow. The blog is completing ten years of its existence in a couple of days from now, and we are all concentrating on that mega event. It is like a grand wedding coming up in a family that everyone is concentrating on and they miss the fact that a kid in the family had just won a seat in a prestigious college. On another day, it would be a grand occasion, but it gets ignored on a occasion like this.

Well, a century is a century, as our respected Sunil Gavaskar never fails to remind us. 🙂 And that is indeed the case. No century comes easy in this blog. This century has been toughgoing. This time duration of 41 days for this century had as many as four dot days including two dot days in a row, which is quite unusual for the blog. A late surge for the last few days, driven by entusiasm for the forthcoming 10th anniversary date sees us clocking a good number of posts (26) in the last six days. It looks like lightening pace by present days standard of the blog, but believe me, it would have regarded as ultra slow in olden days of yore (2011-12) when we averaged 6 to 7 songs in a day and some less enthusiastic music lovers would request us to go slow on our postings. 🙂

Coming to the song, this song, like most blog century songs, richly deserves this honour. This song is a qawwaali. Those music lover who are fans of qawwaali would know what a good qawwaali means. It means a song lasting more than seven or eight minutes and still music lovers not realising how this time flies away. Typical HFM qawwaalis has nok-jhonk between the two genders, where the lead singer of each genders has chorus to lend support to them. The lyrics of these qawwaalis are , to my mind the real stars of this genre of song. The words, word plays, the taunts, the jokes that form part of the qawwaali are hard hitting as well as amusing.

The qawwaali under discussion is from “Jungle Princess”(1958). It is an obscure song from an obscure movie. This movie was directed by A R Zameendaar for Navshakti Films, Bombay. This costume drama (veshbhoosha pradhan film) had Kamran, Shanta Kumari (Neeru), Baburao, Indira, Habeeb, Leela Gupte, Janibabu Qawwaal, Shakila Bano, Fazal, Neelofar, Amina, Sheikh, Funny Walker etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Full details are known only for one song, viz for the song under discussion. Singers of other songs are not known though it is mentioned in HFGK that Mubarak Begam and Jaani Babu qawwaal were the singers in the movie.

Here is this qawwaali for “Jungle Princess”(1958). It is sung by Mubarak Begam and Jaani Babu qawwaal, assisted by female and male chorus. The great lyrics are by Aziz Ghaazi. Music is composed by the duo of Bipin Mehboob.

The song is a forgotten gem. One expects a qawwaali to contain only heavey duty Persian/ Urdu stuff but it is a “modern” qawwaali far ahead of its time (1958) and it contains English words in it as well. 🙂

1958! So this qawwaali was created exactly 60 years ago !

Here is this fantastic qawwaali from “Jungle Princess”(1958) as the 14500th song in the blog. Only the audio of the song is available. Video would have been available had the movie done well like say “Al Hilal”(1958) which had also come in the same year and whose iconic qawwaali had become the 5000th song in the blog back in 2011 !

Only the audio is available and let us be thankful for that. My guess is that this song was picturised on Shaikila Babo Bhopali and Jani Babu Qawwaal.

With this song, “Jungle Princess”(1958) makes its debut in the blog.

This song also serves as a tribute to Mubarak Begam whose remembrance day falls tomorrow (18 july 2018). We will pay our tribute to her tomorrow as well with some more of her great songs. For now, here is this 14500th song in the blog. As always, I thank one and all for their continued support for a decade (it will be a decade two days from now). It had been a reat journey. We had achieved 145 centuries in this one decade. Let us see what the future has in store for us. Just how many more centuries do we have in store and in how many more years. Let us take it one song at a time like how we have done so far and who knows where we may end up with. It has been a great one decade for me as well as the fellow travellers of this musical bandwagon. Let this musical bandwagon continue to roll on and on !

And now, please listen to this song. If you are like me, you may find yourself listening to this song again and again. And that is what I am doing at this moment as I type out these finishing lines of this article.

Lyrics

adaayen teer hain
andaaz barchchi bhaale hain
sambhal ke aana muqaabil mein
husn waale hain
aji haseen jitne hain
sab apne dekhe bhaale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

adaayen teer hai andaaz barchchi bhaale hain
sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hai

adaayen teer hai

jahaan haseen hon inke wahin pe hain dere
wahin pe hain dere
bajaake sitiyaan galiyon mein karte hain phere
ye karte hain phere
gumaan hota hai
gumaan hota hai
kauve udaane waale hain
sambhal ke aana muqabil me
husn waale hain

adaayen teer hain

na karna inpe bharosa
ye hue hain kis ke
na karna

inpe bharosa
ye huye hain kis ke

aji dikhaai ek jhalak
muskura diye khiske

muskura diye khiske
ye dhokhebaaz bhala
ye dhokhebaaz bhala
kiske hone waale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala
kab inse darne wale hain

haseen jitne hain

bataao kis’se ye ulfat ka taraana seekha
ye taraana seekha
kisne ?? jab dil ka lagaana seekha
dil ka lagaana seekha
huzur aise bahut
huzur aise bahut
hamne dekhe bhaale hain
sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hain

adaaye teer hain

ye muskura ke bajaate hain dil ka ek taara
ye muskura ke

bajaate hain dil ka ek taara
jo inse pyar kare
uske baj gaye barah

uske baj gaye barah
ye laal pyaar mein
ye laal pyaar mein
jhandi dikhaane waale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

haseen jitne hain

bane hain aashiq e jaanbaaz jeb mein zero
hain jeb mein zero
badha ke baal samajhte hain
ban gaye hero
ye ban gaye hero
inhen bhi dekhiye
inhen bhi dekhiye
ji teer kya nikaale hain
sambhal ke aana muqabil me
husn waale hain

adaayen teer hain

hai rang pakka magar
zidd hai ke pari samjho
hai rang

pakka magar
zidd hai ke pari samjho

pataakha jaan kaho
inko phuljhadi samjho

inko phuljhadi samjho
aji andhere bol rahe
andhere bol rahe hain ki
hum ujaale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

haseen jitne hain sab

bhala hazaaro taraf ??
tera hai kya kehna
tera hai kya kehna
kameez phhaad ke majnu ne suit hai pehna
ye suit hai pehna
club mein seekhne ab
calub mein seekhne ab
dance jaane waale hain
sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hain

adaayen teer hain

laga hai munh pe to powder
labon pe hai laali
laga hai

munh pe to powder
labon pe hai laali

zamaana badla hai
Laila nahin rahi kaali

ab nahin rahi kaali
aji kata ke baal ye
kata ke baal ye
england jaane waale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

haseen jitne hain
sab apne dekhe bhaale hain

sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hain

hum ahl e dil bhala kab
inse darne waale hain

sambhal ke aana muqabil mein
husn waale hain

adaaye teer hai andaz barchchi bhaale hai
sambhal ke aana muqabil mein husn waale hain

Today’s qawwali is from the film titled ‘Shankar Shambhu’ (1976) which has nothing to do with the famous qawwaali singer duo ‘Shankar-Shambhu’.

Reviving a wonderful qawwaali from one of those not so well known films, and yet a gem of a composition and a fabulous presentation. The film is Mujrim Kaun Khooni Kaun (1965). It is a social drama produced under the banner of Pratima Pictures, Bombay and it is directed by Ramneek Vaidya. The star cast includes Jairaj, Indira aka Indira Billi, Heeralal, Sapru, Shammi, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Gopal Sehgal, Shyam Kumar, V Gopal, Mirza Musharraf, Sherry etc. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjum Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular qawwaali is written by Akhtar Romani. The music composition is by Baabul – another one of the unsung talents that have produced absolutely A class music, but never really got their due recognition in the industry.

Here is a qawwali from “Dharmputra” (1961) which I am told is a very popular qawwali. Farmaish for this song was given by Sid and Raja very promptly provided me with the lyrics of this song, telling me that this song is one of his all time favourites. Thanks to the lyrics provided by him, the time needed for getting the lyrics right (which is the major job for me while posting any song) was saved, and here is this qawwali.

Making Bollywood movies is not everyone’s cup of tea. One needs solid financial backing in order to make a movie that people may feel interested in watching. Most successful movies are those which are made by established producers well endowed with financial muscle.
