“Neel Mani”(1957) was produced by S P Srivastava and directed by Kundan Kumar for Geete Pictures, Bombay. This pauraanik” movie had Nalini Jaiwant, Prem AAdib, Lalita Pawar, Rajkumar (junior), Sulochana Chatterjee, Umakant, Nagpal, S N Tripathi, Mishra, Sarita, Anandkand, Mohan Chotia, Bhagwan Sinha, Tilakraj, Charubala, Dube, Ramlal Pahalwan etc. Kuldeep Kaur appeared in a guest appearance.

“Neel Mani”(1957) had seven songs in it. Six songs were solo songs and one song was duet. The duet song is the only song from this movie to be covered in the blog. That song was covered on 26 august 2016 on the day of Janmashtmi also called Nandotsav.

The movie is about Lord Krishna. So naturally all songs in this movie are Lord Krishn related songs.

Normally one associates such songs with Janmashtmi, but the influence of Lord Krishna has spread even more. Nowadays Dashara is being celebrated all over India. When I was growing up in Ranchi in my younger days, I was only familiar with the Bangla style of Dashara that was celebrated there. In this form of Dashara, pandals had idols of Durga slaying mahishasur, while other gods such as Ganesh, Kartikeya, Saraswati etc looked on.

When I grew up and spent time in other parts of the country, I realised that dashara is spent in different form. In central India and North India, Dashara pandals only have the idol of Durga riding on a lion. Other Gods and even the demon Mahishasur are not depicted. So in these parts, Durga is called Maa sheraawaalee.

It is in Gujarat where daandiyaa raas has been the most major event during dashara. With time, this idea of daandiya raas has appealed other parts of the country as well. I am told that we nowdaandiya raas is organised even in West Bengal and Jharkhand during dashara. I am based at Bhopal at present. I had to go to Bhopal Railway station at midnight. I was expecting next to no traffic, but I found that there was heavy traffic jam even at midnight because of Daandiya raas programs being organised at several locations that I had to pass through. That way, Lord Krishna too has begun to be celebrated during the festival of Maa Durga these days. 🙂

I wonder if they play some daandiyaa raas related songs in these places. I am sure they do that. But most of these songs must be of recent vintage.

We are aware that a lot of religious/ mythological movies used to get made in 1950s and 1960s. These movies provide lots of songs for such occasions.

Here is a song from “Neel Mani” (1957) which is just the daandiya raas song that the doctor ordered. 🙂

This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and female chorus. Gopal Singh Nepali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
