Today’s song is from the film Satta Bazar-1959.

The 50’s decade was full of films which had ‘Family’ as the main focus in their stories. Relationship importance, Values’ germination in the youngsters, denouncing social evils and bad habits etc. were the story essentials in many films. Use of western music in films increased and the audience got a variety of music presentations to please them. In short, films truly became Entertainment. Let’s take a look at what was the film scene in the year 1959….

We come near the end of the decade with the year 1959. It was about 12 years since the upheaval in the film industry with the mass migration of film artistes from India to Pakistan, post Partition. Even after that some movements were still going on with late goers. Fortunately normalcy had returned to the industry by that time, much faster than was expected by the world watchers. Unlike Pakistan-who had to build a fresh new industry in their country- our infrastructure was intact, the base was wide and solid and vacancies were filled up promptly, by artistes waiting in the wings.

However, now the social atmosphere was different. People were not yet used to the sentiments of “we” and “they”. This necessitated changing topics for films being made. Big guns like Mehboob and B R Chopra did not touch on “sensitive” issues. Instead, their stress was on entertainment and minor current social issues.

While entertainers like Dil Deke Dekho, Anadi, Love marriage, Bazigar,Bank manager, Bhai behan, Chhoti behen, Black cat, C I D Girl, Chacha Zindabad, Chandrasena, Circus queen, Commander, Didi, Do Gunde, Do Ustaad, Dr. Z, Fashionable wife, Guest house, Jaal saaz, Kali topi laal rumaal, Kanhaiya, Paigham, Qaidi No.911, Satta Bazar, School master, Shararat, came to entertain people, some specialised films too were made. Historicals like Tipu Sultan and Samrat Prithwiraj Chauhan were made. As usual, mythology was there too.

V. Shantaram, after 5 years, once again tried his hand successfully at making a film based on Dancing. Navrang not only had excellent Dances, but C.Ramchandra created his magic- albeit sans Lata-this time with Asha Bhosale. Guru Dutt’s dream film “Kagaz ke Phool” was a failure, just like Raj Kapoor’s dream film “Mera Naam Joker” a few years hence. Both films were prestigious films for these ace film makers and they had staked their own for these movies. The failure of these movies at the box office shattered their makers to the core. But such is the fickleness of the Indian audience !

Bimal Roy had his special touch in Sujata and Hrishikesh Mukherjee equalled his mentor with Anadi. B R Chopra made Dhool ka Phool discussing premarital pregnancy and the upbringing of a Hindu baby by a kind Muslim family. ( This same theme was stretched to another level, by him, 2 years later with Dharmaputra-61).

Social issues were touched in Paigham( owner vs. workers), Heera Moti (farmer’s problems), Satta Bazar ( ills of gambling). Khwaja Ahmed Abbas showed his ‘never say die’ spirit by making “chaar dil char rahen”, which as expected flopped despite good cast. S Mukherjee, Usha Khanna and Shammi Kpoor weaved magic with Dil Deke Dekho, which became a trend setter for Nasir Hussain and directors of his ilk, in the coming years. Goonj Uthhi Shehnai had music by the old stalwart Vasant Desai who proved to be as good as new !

Today’s film Satta Bazar-1959 was made by Nagina Films, Bombay. It was directed by Ravindra Dave, who was also the film’s Producer. After the success of his film Nagina-1951, starring Nutan and Nasir khan, he named his production company as Nagina Films. Music was composed by Kalyan ji- Anand ji duo, who gave music to more than 250 films in their 46 years of togetherness. Out of these, there were 17 Golden Jubilees and 39 Silver Jubilees. They also did several Charitable stage shows, all over the world, in their career. For this film their assistant was Laxmikant Kudalkar, who formed another Music Duo with Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, later on.

The starcast of the film Satta Bazar was Meena Kumari, Balraj Sahani, Suresh, Tiwari, Vijaya Choudhari, Krishnakant, Asit Sen, Savita Chatterjee etc. The film stressed the ill effects of gambling on family life. The story of the film was….

Here is a story that wriggles around the ” Adverse” outcome of gambling and the psychology of a step mother. . Jamuna( Meena Kumari) is married to widower Ramesh ( Balraj Sahni), a well settled business man who has a daughter Kala ( Vijaya Chaudhari) from his first wife. . Jamuna tries her utmost to be a substitute for Kala’s real mother. She gives her love and affection but the girl ridicules her and shows extreme contempt for the new mother.

Climax between the relation of the step mother and the daughter reaches when the marriage of Kala is under question Kala is in love with Shyam ( Suresh). Shyam is the son of Bholanath( Asit Sen),business partner of Ramesh. Ramesh opposes this marriage and calls it ”an impossibility “because the lovers have different castes and come from different provinces. Jamuna comes to the rescue of the young lovers. She argues with Ramesh that the world has gone a long way ahead and the entrenched caste prejudices should not be allowed to come in the way of those young innocent lovers. Jamuna succeeds in her just stand, Kala moved to tears she embraces Jamuna calling Maa. Kala is engaged to shyam.

Fate has a lot to play. Ramesh gets entangled with a money crazy gambler Badri Prasad ( Ramayan Tiwari). Satta Bazaar with all its traditional glory does to Ramesh what it had been doing in the past to the human race. . Jamuna denounces gambling and protests but Ramesh does not give up till it lowers him to a down right maniac gambler and ruins him and his family. He becomes a target of society and has to face the brunt of his daughter’s un-happiness and the tortures which his wife and child from Jamuna have to undergo. .

Eventually the situation is solved, with the help of Jamuna,Jagat(Johnny Walker)-assistant of Ramesh and Shyam. The cheating and black deeds of Badri Prasad are exposed, how he cheated Ramesh. Ramesh gets back his money, but learns a lesson that gambling and the money procured by it are not the only means of higher and better living. The family comes together once again and ..they live happily ever after !

Director Ravindra Dave handled the film deftly and made it a Hit film of 1959, though there was nothing new in the story, but the lead pair was a seasoned one and the director was skilled. Ravindra Dave (16 April 1919 – 21 July 1992) was a film director, producer, editor and screenplay writer. He directed more than 30 Hindi films in the 1950s and 1960s including several hits like Nagina (1951), Agra Road (1957), Post Box 999 (1958), Satta Bazaar (1959), Dulha Dulhan (1964) and Raaz (1967). He turned to Gujarati cinema with his blockbuster Jesal Toral (1971) and directed 26 Gujarati films in the 1970s and 1980.

Ravindra Dave was born on 16 April 1919 in Karachi, undivided India, now in Pakistan in a Brahmin family. His family belonged to Halvad, in modern day Gujarat. At the age of 14, he joined his maternal uncle Dalsukh M. Pancholi in Lahore as Production Manager for his Punjabi films. He learned editing from producer & director Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. Ravindra Dave directed two songs for “Shiri-Farhad” in 1942, which was left incomplete by director Prahalad Dutt. His direction of songs impressed his uncle Dalsukh Pancholi, who entrusted him with the job. In 1943, he co-directed “Poonji” with Vishnu R. Pancholi. The film revolves around three sisters trying to prevent their father from remarrying. His next noir film, “Dhamki”, was a suspense thriller.

After the partition of India, he left Lahore & moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) India. He directed social dramas, comedies, mythological as well as patriotic films. He directed several murder mysteries and suspense thrillers. “Sawan Bhadon” -1949 was his first film after moving to Bombay. In 1951, he directed “Nagina” starring Nutan & Nasir Khan. The film introduced playback singer C. H. Atma and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Following its success, Dave named his production company “Nagina Films”. He produced “Satta Bazaar”, starring Balraj Sahni and Meena Kumari & “Dulha Dulhan”, starring Raj Kapoor and Sadhana under the banner of Nagina Films. “Naina” starred Geeta Bali and Abhi Bhattacharya.

Ravindra Dave’s movies “Moti Mahal” and “CharMinar” were thrillers. Actor Vijay Anand debuted with his film “Agra Road”. Post Box 999, starring Sunil Dutt & Shakila, was inspired by the Hollywood film “Call Northside 777”. “Raaz” starred Rajesh Khanna and Babita. His last Hindi film was “Road to Sikkim” starring Anju Mahendru and Dev Kumar.

Ravindra Dave worked with some of the leading composers of the time, including Ghulam Haider, Husnlal Bhagatram, Ravi. Roshan, Vijaysinghraje Patwardhan, Shankar Jaikishan, C. Ramchandra, Chitragupta, O. P. Nayyar, Manna Dey, S. D. Burman and Kalyanji Anandji.

Ravindra Dave had planned to remake his blockbuster “Nagina” with Sanjay Khan & Leena Chandavarkar, but the project was delayed. As a result, he turned his production crew to Gujarati cinema to keep them employed. He directed “Jesal Toral” based on the local legend of Gujarat launching the careers of Upendra Trivedi and Ramesh Mehta. The film proved to be one of the biggest hits of Gujarati cinema and ran for 25 weeks in theatres. It won 17 awards from the Government of Gujarat. The film is considered to have revived Gujarati cinema. He directed 26 Gujarati films in total. Upendra Trivedi starred in 16 of them and he collaborated with music composer Avinash Vyas on 20 of them.

In the 1980s, Ravindra Dave undertook a crime thriller titled “Mera Pati Mera Qatil” with the hope of returning to Hindi films, but the film never went into production due to his ill- health & financial constraints. Years later, Rakesh Roshan produced “Khoon Bhari Maang” with a similar plot which was declared a hit.

Ravindra Dave was married to Jashumati. He enjoyed driving and owned several vintage cars. He was an amateur painter, carpenter and sculptor. He was fondly known as Ravinbhai in the Hindi film industry and Bappa in the Gujarati film industry. Ravindra Dave died on 21 July 1992 in Mumbai. ( based on a Gujarati article by Harish Raghuwanshi ji).

Today’s short song is sung by an unknown male voice. In the film, it is a background song and is played when Balraj Sahni loses everything in gambling. With this song, all songs of this film are covered and the film Satta Bazar -1959 is YIPPEED !
