Today’s song is the last song from the film Diwali ki Raat-1956.
What a coincidence ! Just last night was this year Diwali’s last night and today we are discussing the Diwali ki Raat !! This must be an unique instance on this Blog !!!
1956 was a very important year not only for the Film Industry, but also in my own life. The Indian film Industry was celebrating its Silver Jubilee year- 25 years of the Talkie films) (1931-1956). Several programmes were arranged all over India and film fans rejoiced at the event.
As far as I was concerned, I had finished my school education (12th standard) in 1956. Exams were over in early April and results were to be announced by May end or early June. My family and friends did not expect my spectacular success, but my school teachers had high hopes for me and were sure that I would surely pass in First Class. Unlike present times, in those days First class was very difficult and in every school hardly 1 or 2 students used to pass in First Class. The local newspapers used to print detailed results in their special edition and a list of First class students ( never more than 15 to 20 students, from all over the state) was published with their names and the names of their schools.
Results would reach the newspaper offices one day in advance for printing. Their offices would open a window and anxious parents and people used to make a long line to find out numbers and results, one day in advance. I also went to the nearest newspaper window to find out my result. I was shocked when after checking the list for my number, the man behind the window said that ‘your number is not in the result lists anywhere’. I was shattered. Then suddenly he shouted ‘Sorry, Sorry. Congratulations. You have come in the First 10 of the Merit List’. I came back home but did not tell anyone. Next day, my name appeared in the Merit List in the newspapers and I had a lot of happy moments thereafter !
After the exams, I was free to see films almost everyday with different friends. 1956 and 1957 were the 2 years which were the peak years in the ‘Golden Era’ of the HFM. There were films which became all time favourites. some of the films were….
Jaagte Raho (its Bangla version got the Grand Prix award at the Karlovy Vary film Festival.)
Ek Hi Raasta was a story of the second marriage of a woman with a son, who first rejects the new father, but the end was happy.
The biggest Hit was AVM’s Bhai-Bhai. Its songs were evergreen.
Another AVM film was Chori Chori, full of popular songs.
Dev Anand- Shakeela’s C.I.D. was another Hit film.
One of my most favourite films was Hum sab chor hai. In the days of VCR, I had bought a cassette of this film. This was Johar- Majnu comic pair’s second Hit film after their first- Ek thi ladki-1949.
A tear jerker Toofan aur Diya brought Nanda in the limelight.
Funtoosh was my another favourite film.
Fantasy film Hatimtai had the famous and melodious song “Parwar digar E alam”. In that week, Hyderabad newspapers were full of news about how the Hyderabad Nizam went to see this film and how the Nizam made rewind 6 times to hear this song, lip synched by the Hyderabad boy P. Jairaj !
Hemen Gupta -the one time private Secretary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose – directed the film Taksaal.
Some less famous but good films were Kabuliwala (Bangla), Aparajita (Bangla), Nai Delhi (Smriti Biswas attracted more attention in a sister’s role than the heroine Vaijayanti mala), Basant Bahar, Raaj Hath, Inspector and many C grade action films.
1956 was also the peak period when Radio Ceylon was in top gear. Most people connect only ‘Binaca Geetmala’ with Radio Ceylon, but there were many other programs which were popular. Morning 7 to 10 am and evening 7 to 11 pm were the timings. Morning session had fixed programs like instrumental songs, Ek hi film ke geet, Purane filmon ke geet(the last being a Saigal song ALWAYS), Aap hi ke geet, Ek hi kalakaar, NFS, Nai filmon ke geet, Bhajan and classical songs.
In the evening, everyday was a different programme. The full list would be a very long list, so here are few more popular programmes…. Ovaltin Phulwari, Binaca geetmala, Sanforized ke mehmaan (anchored by actor Man Mohan Krishna), Radio kahani, HMV ke sitare, Abhi to main jawan hoon, Pasand apni apni, Wakya geetanjali, Kal aur Aaj, Badlte hue saathi, Ek aur anek, Anokhe Bol, Sargam and many other interesting programmes.
Films and Radio Ceylon made everyday life enjoyable in 1956 !
Film Diwali ki Raat-1956, had an added attraction of having a popular Singer actor as its Hero. There was another Singer actor also in this film – Moti Sagar (Moti Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar was different). Yet another special point about this film was that the First ever solo song of Mahendra Kapoor, was in this film. I somehow never could have a soft corner for this talented singer, simply because of the fraud that he had played in the very beginning of his career.
Mahendra Kapoor won the Metro-Murphy All India Singing Competition in 1957. The prerequisite condition of the competition was that the participants should have no recorded songs earlier.
Mahendra Kapoor had many songs recorded much earlier way back since in 1953.His first recorded song was for composer V. Balsara for the movie Madmast. He had sung two songs for this movie.
1)His first recording for this movie was “Kisi Ke Zulm Ki Tasveer Hai Mazdoor Ki Basti”, a duet with Dhan Indorewala (who had later got married to V. Balsara).
2) His other song in the movie was a qawwali with S.D. Batish, “Unhen Dekhen To Weh Munh Pher … Humen Aankhen Dikhaate Hain”.
He sang his first solo, “Kisko Daani Kahen … Tere Dar Ki Bhikmangi Hai Daata Duniya Saari” for Snehal Bhatkar’s Diwali Ki Raat in 1956.
The third song which he had sung was in Heer, the Punjabi movie, Heer which had music by Anil Biswas.
In addition to the above songs, he is also known to have recorded the following:-
3) A few lines for the song “Ek Taraf Joru Ne Hai Nikaala” for composer Bulo C Rani in the movie Madhur Milan(1955). This song had been sung by Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt and A.R. Ojha and penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
4) A duet with Sabita Banerjee for composer Sanmukh Babu, “Oh Bedardi Jaane Ke Naa kar Bahaane” for the movie Lalkaar(1956)
When confronted, he lamely said that he had not taken any money for the above songs!!!
This was told by Mahendra Kapoor himself in an interview for the column ‘kya bhooloon kya yaad karoon’ (sahara samay).(The Blog beetehuedin.com has all these details including the court case, in the MK’s interview.)
Today’s song-Jeevan veena…. sung by Asha Bhosleis a good song. It was written by Lyricist Pt. Phani. He wrote 219 songs in 32 films and also wrote story, dialogues and screen plays of about 50 C grade, Mytholofical and social films.
With this song all the songs of this film are covered here and film Diwali ki Raat-1956 is YIPPEED.
