The Holy Festival of Chhathh Pujaa is being celebrated all over and today is the last day of this festival which is dedicated to Chhathh Maiyyaa (Mother Chhathh) and Surya Devta (Lord Sun). This festival commenced on 5th November 2024 which according to Hindu calendar was the sixth day of Kartik month.

Chhathh Pujaa is one of the biggest festivals of India which in the past was mainly celebrated in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Uttarakhand. But over the years, it has begun to be celebrated all the country where people from these states have migrated for job or those who have settled down outside their home state and who cannot make it back to their native place during the festival.

In Vadodara where I am staying, I have seen big hoardings and places (near lakes) decorated for the celebration of this ‘mahaa-parv’ here. It is believed that performing Chhath brings happiness and prosperity in life and is traditionally observed for the well-being of kids and well-being of the family. All these years I was not much aware about the rituals of this festival, which I have read about in the recent days to increase my awareness. Earlier I only knew that it is a very strict vrat and fasting is to be observed for thirty six hours. Also I got to learn now those who keep fast during this period eat the restricted diet only and one has to avoid the other non-designated (onion, garlics etc) eatables during this period.

The four day festival begins with the ritual of ‘nahaaye khaaye’, in which devotees observe fast and start with a holy bath in the river Ganga and then use ganga jal to make traditional bhog. The bhog is first served to the deities, and then the devotees eat. It is believed that the bhog helps purify the body and prepare for the 36-hour fast. The second day of the festival is called Kharna. In this, devotees observe fast and, after sunset, prepare poori, kheer, gur ki kheer, and roti and offer them to the deities, and then devotees eat. This is done at the evening of this second day. On the third day morning those observing the fast eat the specially cooked ‘thekuaa’ and after that they do not consume either food or even water till the next morning when they offer prayers to the rising sun and perform the pujaa.

That is how this vrat is done. People maintain utmost cleanliness in and around their homes or the ‘puja’ places. Those who do not keep fast do help to maintain the discipline around them.

On the occasion of this chhathh parv I am presenting a song from a movie titled as
“Chhathh Maiyaa Kee Mahimaa-1979”. It was directed by Tapeshwar Prasad for ‘Indraneel Films, Bombay’. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 16.04.1979 and it was from the genre of ‘religious’ movie. The cast of this movie included Maneesh, Gayatree, Namrata (new discovery), Jeewan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Shahu Modak, B.M. Vyas, Master Indraneel, Asit Sen, Rajendra Nath, Bhagwan, Birbal, Amarnath, Surya Kumar, Amal Sinha, Padma Khanna, Uma Dhawan, Sultaa, Geeta, Padma Devi, Usha Sharma, Jayant Meeta, Kavita, Sanchita and others.

This movie has ten songs which were written by Kavi Pradeep (six songs) and Vindhyawasini Devi (four songs). The music for this movie was composed by Bhupen Hazarika. The singers for this movie are Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Mangeshkar, Bindhyavasini Devi, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar. One should note that this movie was released as a ‘Hindi Movie’ and not under any regional language movie e.g. ‘Bhojpuri movie’ etc.

Today’s song is sung by Bindhyavasini Devi (Mar-1920- 18.04.2006). She is also the composer and lyricist of this song as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). Those who are not aware of this singer should note that Bindhyavasini Devi is a big name in the world of folk music of Bihar ( in Magadhee, Bhojpuri, and Maithilee languages). She came from a humble background. She had no background of music in her family and there was nobody in her family who was interested in music or singing. With active support and encouragement by her husband S.C. Verma, she got associated with Radio (Aakashwaani) from its’ early days i.e. 1948. Her husband played a very important role in her music career and gave her training in music and singing. She also received training from K.C. Verma. Later she went on to become one of the greatest folk musicians of the country. Bindhyavasini Devi was the Producer of folk music department of All India Radio, Patna. She was the founder of ‘Vindhya Kala Mandir’ which came into existence to promote folk music and gave training in folk music to who could not afford it for various reasons. She was honoured by Government of India with Padma Shree in 1974. She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1991. We will be reading more about her in detail in future posts on the blog. In this post I could not add more due to shortage of time and since I want this post to be posted today.

As mentioned above this song is sung by Bindhyavasini Devi. She has also written it and composed it. This song is about offering prayer to the ‘god sun’ and I guess this is the song that is suited perfectly for the occasion. This song has the essence of our culture, tradition and customs. Listening to today’s song warms our hearts on knowing about the great variety and diversity of folk music that India possesses which are rooted in India culture and traditions that have been handed over from generation to generation for thousands of years. Folk music has played vital role in ensuring that the culture and traditions of the past continue to stay alive and are not forgotten.

With today’s song this movie ‘Chhathh Maiyaa Kee Mahimaa-1979’ makes its debut on the blog.

(The footnote in HFGK for this movie page mentions that the four songs written by Vindhyawasini Devi were composed by her as confirmed by herself).
