Blog Day :

5963 Post No. : 18623

Children’s Day special today.

Wondrous memories I have – of the special 14th November programs and treats. In Delhi, I remember there used to fun fairs for children.  At the Children’s Park next to India Gate in Central Delhi, there were occasions when Nehru ji would himself be present with the kids for a short while, in the early evenings. I have never been present at such gatherings myself. By the time I would be of the age to understand and enjoy such events, Nehru ji had passed away. But I have seen such events in the newsreels at the cinemas – Nehru ji surrounded by a huge number of children. And I especially remember, he would let fly some white pigeons – a symbol of peace and friendship.

When I would be in third or fourth class, I was stung by the philately craze. And the special for this day was that the Post Office would issue a new stamp every year to mark this occasion. Then collecting the special first day issues became a craze. I have large number of these special first day covers in my collection, representing this celebration across almost three decades. Later, when I started to travel and stay outside Delhi, the newer additions became fewer and far between.  But I do have wonderful memories, just of the great feelings within, of the celebrations of the day.

After Nehru ji passed away, for many years my dad made it a habit to take me and my sister to the Children’s Park in the afternoon or early evening, have the rides on the swings, slides and see-saw. And then followed by some ice cream and chana jor garam etc. Sometimes we would meet some friends from school who had also come with their parents, and that doubled the enjoyment and fun.

The fun lasted for many years, but now it has waned and disappeared. I was recently at the philatelic bureau for checking out recent stamps of film world stalwarts. And my attention was taken by the display of the Children’s Day special issues over the years. I was quite dismayed to note that these special issues have been discontinued after 2019. The famous Children’s Park has been shuttered and dismantled. I was dismayed when this had happened some years back. It felt as if a ton of lovely memories had become faded.

At the Philately bureau when I asked the gentleman at the desk why the Children’s Day specials were discontinued, he tried to give some round about answers, but then finally said – sir you are intelligent enough, you will understand what has happened. And he closed the topic with that. No further comments on the state of affairs. Just that a special celebration that was meant for children only, has been taken out of the system.

Let us come to the song for today. It is from the film ‘Phool Aur Kaliyan’ which is of the 1960 vintage. One very wonderful children’s song from this film is already posted on our blog – “Jai Jai Krishn Muraari”. It is a very fun loaded song and I would recommend readers to visit that post also today.

The tale revolves around a group of children in a village. There is also an old tailor in the village who lives alone. He is the favorite elder of the children and they call him Chacha. There are goings on in the village as one would normally expect. One day a circus comes to the village and the children enjoy it very much.

Some other events develop – Chacha is losing health because of advancing years. He is also in financial trouble and the children are very dismayed that he may be going away. So the children decide to raise money by doing a show similar to the circus they had seen recently. This song is their preparation for the show, and its advertisement to the general public in the village. I have not been able to locate a separate video clip, although the full film is available online. I will try to bring in the video clip as soon as is possible. Right now I am trying to get this post completed before 7 pm. That is the time for the show to start. J

The film ‘Phool Aur Kaliyan’ is produced by  Rajkamal Kalamandir, essentially by V Shantaram. The music of this film is by Pt. Shivram and the lyrics are written by Bharat Vyas. The singing voices are of Charusheela Shantaram and Madhukar Shantaram.

Another wonderful creation of delight for an age that is probably not easy for many to contemplate. Bharat Vyas ji has done a wonderful job with the words of this song. And the music of course takes you to the simpler times when the melody was not a slave of technology.

For the child inside everyone of us. A song to revive and relive the childhood all over once again.

Song – Aaj Shaam Ko Saat Baje (Phool Aur Kaliyan) (1960) Singer – Charusheela Shantaram, Madhura Shantaram, Lyrics – Bharat Vyas, MD – Pt Shivram
Charusheela Shantaram + Madhura Shantaram

Lyrics

aaj shaam ko saat baje
hum bachchon ka band baje
tad tada tadaaa
tetad tada tadaaa
daa raa dee daa raa dee
daa raa dee ree dee ree dee ree dim
aaj shaam ko saat baje
hum bachchon ka band baje
waqt pe aana
bhaiyyaa
tikat kataana
bhaiyyaa
waqt pe aana
tikat kataana
ek ek aana
bas
hamaara sasta hai circus
naachta hasta hai circus
dilon mein basta hai circus
aaj shaam ko saat baje.ey.ey.ey

sabse pehle bajegi ghanti
tann tann tann tann tannnn
tope se joker niklega
naachega ban tthaan
kisi se nahin darega
ke neeche sar ko karega
gadhon ki ghaas charega
hamaara sasta hai circus
naachta hasta hai circus
dilon mein basta hai circus
aaj shaam ko saat baje.ey.ey.ey

dekho dekho dekho
udhar dekho idhar dekho
usko dekho mujhko dekho
dekhna babu bakri ka bachcha
sher se nahin darega
mmmeheh
mmmeheh
dekhna babu bakri ka bachcha
sher se nahin darega
haathi dhol bajaayega
aur bandar naach karega
dimak dim dimak dimak dim dim
dimak dim dimak dimak dim dim
hasoge ke dekh ke tum khil khil
chalaayega bhaalu saaikil
laaa laalla laaa
laalla laa laa laa
laaa laalla laaa
laalla laalla laalla laalla lallaaa
ke chakkar aise lagenge
ke machhar saare bhagenge
mazaa naa aaye agar to
tikat ke paise waapas
hamaara sasta hai circus
naachta hasta hai circus
dilon mein basta hai circus

aaj shaam ko saat baje
hum bachchon ka band baje
tad tada tadaaa
tetad tada tadaaa
daa raa dee daa raa dee
daa raa dee ree dee ree dee ree dim
tad tada tadaaa
tetad tada tadaaa
daa raa dee daa raa dee
daa raa dee ree dee ree dee ree dim

गधों की घास चरेगा
हमारा सस्ता है सर्कस
नाचता गाता है सर्कस
दिलों में बसता हैं सर्कस
आज शाम को सात बजे॰॰ए॰॰ए॰॰ए

Mazaa aaya Avinash ji,
Aapka comment padh ke,

Yes, the joys and delights are with those who always keep in touch with child within. The child within is always with us, just that some of us keep in touch, and some tend to ignore.

Bring on the band, and let the show begin.

Hamaara sasta hai circus
Dilon mein basta hai circus

Thanks so much ke aapne tikat advance mein liya

Lots of fun and joy to you too.
