‘Dhat Tere Kee’ (1983) was produced by Manju Mishra and was directed by Meraj. The main actors included Kiran Vairale, Ravi Baswani, Manju Mishra and Akhil Mishra with supporting actors consisting of Abhi Bhattacharya, Prem Kapoor, Bhuvan Singh, Suren Sharma, Master Rinku etc. The film is a romantic comedy written by Akhil Mishra who along with his wife, Manju Mishra produced the film apart from acting in the film. It was their first film as producers.

The cast of the film reminds me of an adorable actress, Kiran Vairale, who had acted in films of top banners, like ‘Bhumika’ (1977), ‘Doosra Aadami’ (1977), ‘Ahsaas’ (1979), ‘Naram Garam’ (1981), ‘Saath-Saath’ (1982), ‘Arth’ (1982), ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), ‘Namkeen’ (1982), ‘Lorie’ (1984), ‘Saagar’ (1985) etc. In most of the films, she got the roles of hero’s sister or heroine’s friend. As a supporting actress, she has left her mark of good performances in all these films. After 1986, she has not been seen in films or in TV serials.

When Kiran Vairale joined Hindi films in early 1980s, the only information I had known at that time was that she was the daughter of Madhusudan Vairale, who was a cabinet minister in Government of Maharashtra and later a Member of Parliament from Akola. I found an interview of her published in E-Times of India, January 28, 2017, which gave me some glimpse of as to how her filmy career started. In less than a decade in the film industry, she had to leave the films to join her husband in New York sometime in mid-1980s.

After her matriculation from St. Anne School, Fort, Mumbai, Kiran Vairale joined St Xavier’s College where Farooque Shaikh had studied and had formed Hindi drama group and the music group. She participated in inter-college dramas. It was her association with IPTA from 1975 to 1984 which gave Kiran Vairale to brush up her acting. In IPTA, she did four plays with Farooque Shaikh, one among them was ‘Doosra Aadmi’ by Sagar Sarhadi. Later, the play was made into a film by Yashraj Films in 1977 in which she had a side role. Due to her theatre background, Kiran Vairale got roles in as many as 19 Hindi films during her short filmy career (1977-86).

Sometime in the middle of 1980s, Kiran Vairale got married to Syed Fahd Asad Mumtaz, a nephew of Dilip Kumar (his sister, Taj Mumtaz’s son) and migrated to USA. Presently, Kiran Vairale (now Kiran Mumtaz) owns and runs one of the largest immigrant-based recruitment advertising agencies in New York.

‘Dhat Tere Kee’ (1983) is available for watching on one of the video sharing platforms in VCD format in an average quality. The story of the film is as under:

Madhukar Sharma (Ravi Baswani) and his wife, Vinti (Manju Mishra) live in an apartment in Mumbai along with their school-going son. Madhukar works in a company as a Chartered Accountant. Gunjan (Kiran Vairale) lives in their neighbourhood with her father (Prem Kapoor). She is in love with Pitamber (Akhil Mishra). While Gunjan is fun-loving and of outgoing nature, Pitamber is docile and conservative by nature. They decide to get married, but their respective parents strongly oppose their marriage, Vinti being a good friend of Gunjan convinces Madhukar that they should become the guardian to Gunjan and get her married to Pitamber.

Gunjan and Pitamber get married in a temple in the presence of Madhukar and Vinti. However, Pitamber’s father expels the newly married couple. Gunjan’s father also does not allow the couple to stay in his house. Finally, it is Madhukar who gives a room in his flat to stay for some time until they find an alternative place to stay. But their stay becomes longer as Pitamber is unable to find a place to stay due to his financial constraint. So, Gunjan joins a modelling company to improve the income. After few months, the couple shift to a leased flat just above the flat of Madhukar.

Ever since Gunjan has become a model, there is sea-saw changes in Madhukar. He has become more fashionable. He has changed his hair style and has bought the latest style of trousers and the spectacle frame as suggested by Gunjan. He has also started reading women’s magazines. He flirts with Gunjan and starts imagining himself with her as Salim and Anarkali. Vinti starts feeling that Madhukar has lost interest in her. Slowly, Vinti becomes paranoid that Madhukar is going to kill her to marry Gunjan.

One night, Madhukar uses towels to drive away mosquitoes in the bedroom. In doing so, he notices a mosquito on Vinti’s cheek. When he takes towel close to her cheek to kill the mosquito, Vinti wakes up and shouts suspecting that Madhukar wanted to strangle her to death. Despite giving the explanation, Vinti is unconvinced for she thinks that Madhukar has used towel to avoid his finger-print on her neck. She keeps a close watch on Madhukar on his movements.

On the married life of Gunjan and Pitamber, another drama is taking place. Pitamber’s father suddenly dies of heart-attack. His property including the bungalow is passed on to Pitamber. He shifts to Bungalow with Gunjan. There is a serious disagreement between Gunjan and Pitamber on her modelling work which he wants Gunjan to quit. She is not agreeable and she shifts to their earlier lease flat. This becomes easier for Madhukar to often visit her flat to flirts with Gunjan.

To teach a lesson to Madhukar, Vinti starts flirting with Pitamber. She starts visiting Pitamber’s bungalow. The common factor which is observed by both Madhukar and Vinti while meeting Gunjan and Pitamber, respectively is that both are badly missing each other’s company. But the question is who will bell the cat. Finally, Gunjan requests Madhukar to take her to Pitamber who, in turn, request Vinti to take him to Gunjan. Both are reluctant to accede to their request immediately for a different reason lest their secret meetings would be known. But Gunjan and Pitamber can no longer wait. Both start from their respective residences and accidentally meet at the staircase of Madhukar’s flat. They are united and Gunjan Shifts to Pitamber’s bungalow who now insists that Gunjan should continue her modelling work. With this, it is ‘Dhat Tere Kee’ for Madhukar and Vinti as the reason for their daily fight is no longer there.

The story written by Akhil Mishra is interesting for the light ‘romcom’ genre as was intended. The director fairly succeeded in the first half of the film. However, in the second half, the film has lost some ‘romcom’ elements mainly due to more than necessary verbal fight scenes between Ravi Baswani and Manju Mishra. While the casting for roles of Ravi Baswani and Kiran Vairale was perfect, I felt that casting of Akhil Mishra and Manju Mishra was less than perfect. Of course, one should also need to take note while selecting the cast that it was a low budget film.

‘Dhat Tere Kee’ (1983) had 3 songs written by Sayeed Quadri and set to music by Kuldeep Singh. I am presenting the film’s first song, ‘iss waqt ke paanvon mein kaantaa koi chubh jaaye’ rendered by Ashok Khosla and Asha Bhosle. It is a radio song.

The background for the song is that Gunjan (Kiran Vairale) and Pitamber (Akhil Mishra) have just shifted to their lease flat, a floor above the flat of Madhukar. Gunjan puts the radio on to listen to a romantic song, Both are enjoying the song in their romantic mood. Towards the end of the song, Vinti (Manju Mishra) rings the bell of their flat to put an unintended break on their romantic sojourn. She is amused by the lipstick marks on Pitamber’s face.
