‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962) was produced by Dhanpat Rai under the banner of People’s Pictures and was directed by B J Patel. The star cast included Ranjan and Shalini in the lead roles supported by Nilofer, Rajan Kapoor, Babu Raje, Shri Bhagwan, Habib, Vishwa Mehra, Dalpat, Shyam, Ghory, Shetty, Bhushan Tiwari etc.
‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962) is a stunt film with a familiar story in this genre of films. Two neighbouring kings are at war with each other. One king is kidnapped by other king for a ransom. The arrested king’s brother sees as an opportunity to become a king, But one of the loyal soldiers of the kidnapped king becomes obstacle in his path who thwarts the attempt and restore the kingdom to the kidnapped king. Evidently, the film is mainly meant for front benchers with trick scenes, sword fighting, horse-riding chase and some comic situations.
The film has recently been uploaded on one of the video sharing platforms. The story of the film is broadly as under:
King Dilip Singh (Dalpat) and his neighbouring King Rao Angaar are at war with each other for a long period. King Rao Angaar sends a message to King Dilip Singh for negotiation to end the costly war at a pre-determined place. King Dilip Singh agrees for the negotiation. Robin (Ranjan), one of his soldiers warns King Dilip that King Rao Angaar cannot be trusted. So, Robin accompanies the King Dilip along with a few soldiers to meet King Rao Angaar during which his soldiers waylaid King Dilip and is kidnapped while Robin escapes from their trap.
Soon, King Rao Angaar sends a message to Shila Dutt, the brother of King Dilip asking for the ransom of 50 lakhs gold coins to release King Dilip. Shila Dutt is annoyed and orders his soldiers to get ready for the war with King Rao Angaar. However, Shila Dutt’s minister advises him that in the absence of King Dilip, he would be King. Also, he can hike the taxes on his subject to raise 50 lakhs gold coins in the guise of King Dilip getting released. Shila Dutt is happy with the prospect of becoming a king. At that time, Robin returns and strongly plead to resume the war with King Rao Angaar. Shila Dutt’s minister tries to take Robin to his side by offering him the post of commander-in-chief, but he declines. Shila Dutt declare Robin as rebel and orders his arrest. But Robin escapes. Since then, a ‘hide and seek’ game is going on between Robin and Shila Dutt’s soldiers.
During his escapades, Robin comes into contact with a village girl, Seema (Shalini) who has unknowingly given him shelter from the soldiers of Shila Dutt during a chase. They fall in love. Shila Dutt’s soldiers have seen Robin and Seema together. They capture Seema and brings her to Shila Dutt who ordered to be put in a solitary confinement. Robin proceeds to free Seema from her captivity. In his efforts, a few of the soldiers of Shila Dutt as well as the people of the kingdom who are fed up with the atrocities of Shila Dutt, join him. After some fierce fights, Robin is able to free Seema.
With Robin eluding his capture, Shila Dutt employs Madhuri (Nilofer), the dancer in the palace who is in love with Shila Dutt and is dreaming to become his queen. She goes in the disguise of an old woman in need of help and lures Robin to visit her hut where he gets arrested and Shila Dutt orders death to Robin by hanging.
Next day, while Robin and his one associate are to be hanged, Shila Dutt is sending a convoy taking 50 lakhs gold coins as ransom with Madhuri as his personal gift to King Dhawangaar. Madhuri is aghast but cannot not say anything. While convoy was on the way, Madhuri makes an excuse to get down from her horse and meet a soldier loyal to Robin to whom she reveals that Shila Dutt has ordered hanging of Robin and his associate. The loyal soldier with the supports from the villagers march to Shila Dutt’s palace to rescue Robin. Just before the hanging of Robin and his associate was to take place, Robin’s horse gets loose and charges on the soldiers. In the prevailing confusion, the loyal soldier with the help from the armed villagers get Robin and his associate off the noose and they are now free.
In the meanwhile, Madhuri with the convoy of 50 lakhs of gold coins reaches King Rao Angaar’s palace and delivers the ransom to him against the release of King Dilip Singh. Instead, Madhuri gets arrested as it was a ploy of Shila Dutt so that King Dilip Singh is not released, and he becomes the King. However, Robin with his band of armed supporters storm King Rao Angaar’s palace and set Dilip Singh released. They proceed to Shila Dutt’s palace where he is dreaming of coronation of himself as king. However, the fierce fight ensues in which Shila Dutt is killed. Dilip Singh is restored as the King.
The film has six songs written by Yogesh and is set to music by Robin Banerjee. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. This is lyricist Yogesh’s debut film after struggling for over three years in Mumbai in a pitiable condition. Incidentally, in the film, he is accredited as Yogesh Kumar. We are familiar with many of his popular songs, but many may not be aware that Yogesh was the song writer for those popular songs. He sparkled without the limelight through his songs which depicted the complexities of life in simple words.
Yogesh Gaud (19/03/1943 – 29/05/2020) was born in Lucknow. His father was an Engineer in Public Works Department of Government of United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). Yogesh had passed his intermediate and was looking for admission in the college when he father suddenly passed away putting the family in financial hardship. Instead of college, he learnt typing and shorthand to get some employment. But he failed to get employment in Lucknow.
Those days, his cousin, Vrajendra Gaud who had grown up with him in his house, was one of the well-known writers and lyricists in Hindi film industry. Yogesh thought of taking help of his cousin in getting some employment in Mumbai not necessarily in the film industry as it was not his intention to be a writer or lyricist. So, he along with his close friend from his school and college days, proceeded to Mumbai when he was 16. Before proceeding to Mumbai, Yogesh let out a two rooms of his bungalow in Lucknow on rental basis to take the financial care of his mother and two sisters.
After reaching Mumbai, Yogesh visited his cousin, Vrajendra Gaud from whom he did not get a positive response. A disappointed and worried Yogesh took a room in a hutment colony in Andheri (West) at least for some shelter. Fortunately, his close friend who has accompanied him got employment in Sitaram Mill. Throughout during his 3 years of unemployment, it was his close friend from his school and college days who took his care of subsistence on a condition that he should only concentrate working for Hindi films. The reason was that he did not like the treatment Vrajendra Gaud gave to Yogesh. So, he wanted Yogesh to prove to his cousin that he too can be a celebrity in Hindi film industry.
Being unemployed, during the day time when he was alone in the house, lot of thoughts used to hover in his mind which he started transcribing in the poetry form in his diary. Gradually, it grew to a large number of poems. At that time, character actor, Bhagwan Sinha introduced him to music director, Robin Banerjee who went through his diary. He complimented to Yogesh for his good poems and promised him that he would use him whenever he gets his next film. After few months, Robin Banerjee selected six songs written by Yogesh which were approved by the producer of the film, ‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962). One of the six songs, tum jo aao to pyaar aa jaaye he wrote for this film became very popular. With this film, he got tagged to mostly stunt/action films and that too mostly with music director, Robin Banerjee (Nine films during 1962-70). One of his popular songs during this period was aankhon aankhon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai from ‘Marvel Man’ (1964).
After the initial euphoria, Yogesh was disappointed that almost all the films for which he got assignments for song writing were of stunt/action genre. He wanted to write songs like his celebrated contemporaries, Shailendra, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shakeel Badayuni etc. He was fed up of writing songs for stunt/action films. Towards the end of 1960s when he was on a visit to Lucknow, he decided to look for some business opportunities in Lucknow itself instead of returning to Mumbai. It was at this juncture, Yogesh got the information through his friend that a couple of his songs have been selected and he should return to Mumbai urgently. And the songs selected was for the film, ‘Aanand’ (1971).
Yogesh used to visit singer Sabita Bannerjee’s house (later she became Sabita Chowdhury) for playing gramophone records as he did not have a record player. During this period, he had met Salil Chowdhury. After the death of Shailendra, Salil Chowdhury was working with Gulzar and Prem Dhawan. Salil Chowdhury, being himself a Bangla poet, was impressed with Yogesh’s poems. It was two songs which he had written based on his own experiences in life that were selected for ‘Aanand’ (1971). The remining two songs were written by Gulzar. For the first time he was working with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar and Salil Chowdhury. Two songs, kahin door jab din dhal jaaye and zindagi kaisi hai paheli haay written by Yogesh became very popular paving the way for his long association with Salil Chowdhury from 1971 to 1994 in 19 films and for some non-film albums.
In the 1970s and 80s, Yogesh wrote popular songs for many of Basu Chatterjee’s films like ‘Rajnigandha’ (1974), ‘Uss Paar’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1976), ‘Priyatama’ (1977), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Manzil’ (1979), Jeena Yahaan’ (1979), Apne Paraaye’ (1980), ‘Shaukeen’ (1982), ‘Pasand Apni Apni’ (1984), Gudgudee (1997) etc. It is interesting to note that lyrics of the two songs from ‘Rajnigandha’ (1975) – kai baar yoon hi dekha hai ye jo mann ki seema rekha hai and rajneegandha phool tumhaare mahke yoon hi jeewan mein have been written by Yogesh in pure literary Hindi. Another song that comes to my mind in this category is rimjhim gire saawan sulag sulag jaaye mann from ‘Manzil’ (1979).
Post-1990, Yogesh did not have the many opportunity to write songs as the type of filmmaking had changed. Some of the music directors like Salil Chowdhury, Usha Khanna and R D Burman with whom he had majorly worked were themselves on the declining career path. Whatever films he got during this period for song writing were confined to one or two songs. His last film for which he wrote two songs was ‘Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain’ (2018).
During his last few years, he faced some financial hardship as, apart from very few assignments of song writing, he had stopped getting royalties on his songs. He was also not keeping good health. Yogesh passed away on May 29, 2020, at the age of 77 after spending last few years of his life in loneliness.
I am presenting the 5th song from the film, ‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962), ‘tere dam se ye jahaan hai’ which has been accredited to Mahendra Kapoor. However, the voice in the song does not appear to match with that of Mahendra Kapoor. Also, his name does not appear in the credit title of the film. The song is written by Yogesh.
