#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Alag Alag-1985’. It was the most ambitious & hyped project of actor-producer Rajesh Khanna which failed at the box office. Though the music of the movie by R.D. Burman made waves and a couple of the songs from this movie became popular too, the good musical score by R.D. Burman too could not help the film much. The music of this movie lost out because of the music of other movies like ‘Ram Teree Gangaa Mailee’ and ‘Pyaar Jhuktaa Naheen’ etc which were released in the same year i.e. 1985.
The following ten movies are rated as the top ten movies from the year 1985’.
Ram Teri Gangaa Mailee
Pyaar Jhuktaa Naheen
Mard
Teree Meharbaaneeyaan
Meree Jung
Sanjog
Tarzan (?)
Paataal Bhairavi
Saagar
Arjun
Some sources also include movies like ‘Giraftaar’, ‘Masterji’, and ‘Ghulami’, ‘Ham Dono’, ‘Bewafaai’, ‘Babu’ etc in top ten movies of 1985.
“Alag Alag 1985” was directed by Shakti Samanta for ‘Aashirwaad Films International, Bombay’. It was produced by Rajesh Khanna & Kusam Nirula. After this movie Rajesh Khanna went on to produce another movie ‘Jai Shiv Shankar’ in 1990 which got shelved and didn’t see the ‘screen’ of the theatres. “Alag Alag 1985” was passed by Censor Board on 20.09.1985. The cast of this movie has Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Deven Verma, Sushma Seth, Geeta Siddharth, Urmila Bhatt, Anjana, Rajrani, Rajesh Puri, Subiraj, Asit Sen, Bharat Bhooshan, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Manmouji, Vikas Anand, Manik Dutt, Sunil Dhawan, Kamal Kanchan, Anoop, Pratap, Surendra, Shyam, R. Kankariya, Mohit, and S. Chawan, Gurbachan, Satyen Kappu and others. Om Prakash and Om Shivpuri had a friendly appearance in this movie while actress Bindu had as special appearance in this movie.
The screenplay and dialogues for ‘Alag Alag’ were written by Vijay Kaul. And Editing of the movie was done by David Dhawan. Geet Kosh lists seven songs for this movie including one multiple version song. All the songs for this movie were written by Rajesh Khanna’s favorite lyricist Anand Bakshi and music was also composed by his favorite R.D. Burman. The singers for the songs in this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, K. J. Yesudas and Kavita Krishnamurthy.
Here is the brief story of this movie as given by our senior Shri Sudhir jee while presenting one of the songs from this movie. We will read this story till the situation of today’s song in this movie.
Tina Munim (Chanda/Chandnee) is a village belle, whose only dream in life is to marry a rich man. She comes to Bombay, meets Rajesh Khanna (Neeraj), and mistakes him for a rich man. When he reveals that he is not a rich man but is a struggling singer looking for work in the film industry, she dumps him. Later in the film, we find out that he is actually a rich man’s son, who is out on his own, because his parents do not appreciate his desire to be a singer. The next set of events brings Tina to the home of Shashi Kapoor (Dr Rana), who is a doctor and is widowed. Pursuing her goal with the single-minded devotion, she attempts to become his wife. The rest of the story is intertwined. Shashi Kapoor actually treats Tina Munim as a daughter. Rajesh comes to the doctor to get a false disability certificate as a reference. Tina meets him, confronts him and exposes him. Rajesh leaves, and then is involved in an accident in which he loses his voice. He re-joins his family. Shashi Kapoor passes away on account of some illness. Tina is back on the road. With the help of his mother, Rajesh tries to promote Tina as a singer, without letting her know.
Neeraj (Rajesh Khanna) asks his mother to bring Chaandnee (Tin Munim) to their place and allow her to stay in the ‘kothhi’ which Neeraj has specially kept for Chaandnee. Neeraj also tells his mother (via letter, since he has lost his voice) that now his only purpose of life is to help Chaandnee become a good playback singer. When Chaandnee approaches Pandit jee (Bharat Bhooshan) for playback singing opportunity, he guides her that she should first learn the ‘raag’ and ‘raageenee’ and she should also listen Mirza jee (Om Shivpuri) an accomplished Ustaad. Neeraj comes to know about this when his mother brings Chaandnee to their home. He approaches Mirza jee. But since Mirza jee has disconnected himself from music and teaching music anymore he rejects Neeraj’s request of teaching music to Chaandnee .
(Mirza is forgotten by people and didn’t receive the recognition and rewards which he deserved and he is living in poverty now. He has lost his family and everything for his art and passion) ‘sikhaanaa to door, hamne is funn ko hameshaa ke liye khair-baad(goodbye) keh diyaa hai’, Mirza to Neeraj.
Neeraj spends the whole night outside the doors of Ustaad Mirza till next morning, when Mirza opens the door and found Neeraj there. Finally, Mirza accepts Neeraj’s request and thus begins the training and ‘riyaaz’ of Chaandnee at Neeraj’s place. And that gives us a situation for the today’s song in the movie.
Today’s song is the voices of Yesudas and Asha Bhonsle. Om Shivpuri and Tina Munim are respectively lip-syncing for their voices in this song. I could not find the video of this song, and I guess that this song was later edited from the movie. If I remember correctly, it was in the movie when I watched it in ‘1985’. In the online video of this movie a small portion of this song is included though, but the video of the full song is not available.
Let us now listen to this wonderful nerve-calming composition by Pancham. If I am correct this is the first song Yesudas sang for Pancham.
