Jaidev Ki Non-Filmi Suraavali – 05
—————————————————-

This melodius singing by Penaaz under the baton of Jaidev will not easily leave your mind long after the last note is played and heard. “Wow’ is what I can say after listening to her.

Thanks to ‘Wikipedia’ and other internet sites, I am able to write such a long article, for a change. (And now, I have also started to understand the meaning of ‘Research’.)

Padmashree Peenaz Masani is a ghazal singer from India whose performances have enthralled audiences around the world. She has performed extensively at concerts, which have left a riveting impact on the audiences. She has created euphoria and continues to perform and sing leaving one and all spellbound. Her tender looks, glorious voice and impeccable Urdu diction is worthy of every praise bestowed on her. Peenaz has had the famous ghazal exponent Madhurani ji as her mentor and guide.

She was discovered by the legendary composer Jaidev and she proved to be a true blood child prodigy. She cut her first album in 1981. She has the distinction of having one Platinum and three Gold Discs to her name. She has made over 20 albums. Her dedication and commitment to the traditional form of Indian music is highly commendable. She has sung in over dozen languages. She has in a way created a priceless national treasure by way of her contribution to music. She can spin and render a vast repertoire of ghazals from the traditional to the most modern. That is the magic of her voice. She is one of the leading female singers to have achieved an eminent status in what is a traditionally a male-dominated world of ghazal singing.

She has had the honour of being invited by then President Zail Singh to perform at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, as the President wanted to hear a good ghazal artist.

In her career, she has won a number of awards, including the title of ‘Shehzadi Tarunnam’, by the state government of Uttar Pradesh 1996 and the 11th ‘Kalakar Award’ for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’, in 2002. She was honoured with the Padma Shree award on 26 January 2009.

She has given her voice as a playback singer for Bollywood, in more than 50 Hindi movies and sung in over ten languages. Under the aegis of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, she has performed in countries as far reaching as Germany, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Vietnam.

Jaidev ji brought quite a lot of young talent to the mainstream in late 1970s and 80s, especially with the Doordarshan program ‘Aarohi’. Here is Peenaz Masani singing Balkavi Bairaagi’s ‘Mora Ang Ang Navrang’ beautifully composed by the MD.

Today, 21st June is designated as the World Music Day. The reminders checked in quite late in the afternoon today. The historical details about this event are available on the internet, and our dear Arun ji has also summarized them in a brief post on the Whatsapp group.

As I set down thinking about this event, and to search out an appropriate song for today, my mind almost immediately went to the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’.  In my mind, this is probably the best film on the theme of classical music, in the recent decades. Times are past that classical music and the legends of this art form used to be the central themes of many a film, especially from the historical perspective, in the decades that coincide with the golden era of Hindi film music. Historical persona such as Tansen and Baiju, Narsi Mehta and Meerabai, Kalidas and Soordas, Kabir and Rani Roopmati have been central themes and central characters of many a film till the decade of 1970s. Beyond that, I cannot easily recall a film whose theme and storyline is based primarily on classical music.

The byline in one of the news programs on the 6th evening was – “फिल्मों का एक युग, मिनटों में सिमट गया” (“filmon ka ek yug, minton mein simat gaya”) (an entire era of (Hindi) filmdom, faded away in a matter of minutes). A completely unexpected departure happened earlier in the day. Very much in the saddle, and very much in the busy prime of his career, Om Puri passed away suddenly. The amount of intensity he packed into his characters, and in his dialogue delivery, it seemed he was going to last forever on the screen. Sixty six years they say. Goodness, it just seems like yesterday that Bhikhu picked up that axe used to cut wood at a cremation ground, and brutally attacked his own sister.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

So now we are all busy discussing the pros and cons of the demonetisation on our WhatsApp group. We are also having a fair number of jokes on the subject. But as our dear thandapani mentioned last week when our PM dropped the demonetisation bomb (as I like to call it) I have also decided to wait and watch for the rush at the banks and cash ATMs. At such a time a few songs ran through my mind. Let us have one of them today.

Today(12 november 2016) is the 70th birthday of Gopal Bedi.

Gopal who, you say?

No surprise if the name doesn’t ring a bell. But if I say “Ranjeet”, it will have instant recall.

Asha ji, one of the leading lady playback singers in Indian cinema, turns 83 today. Seventy of thes 83 years have been spent in an active career, probably the longest such accomplishment by a playback singer. As Sadanand ji indicates in his article (the one before this), he states that she is currently on a concert tour of US. This speaks of the energy and the verve of this personality.

Indian cricket and Bollywood both enjoy enormous popularity among Indians. With the fan following that some of the cricketing stars enjoy, a few producers have toyed with the idea of featuring them in main roles, side roles and also in guest roles in their movies. The underlying idea seems to be to encash their popularity for drawing more movie watchers to the movie halls. But past experiences show that most films featuring cricketers have flopped.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

If November was the month of many Miss Indias-turned- actresses ‘ birthdates then December will be proud to call itself the month of actors who are/were superstars. The list has Dharamendra, Shatrughan SInha, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan & Rajesh Khanna. (Disclaimer to all those who want to correct this list: I have chosen to mention only those actors who are/were superstars. The anniversary list page on our blog mentions around 24 male birthdays.) Dharamendra turned 80 a few days back; Shatrughan Sinha turned 70; Dilip Saab turned 93 yesterday; Raj Kapoor would have been 91 in 15 days from now; Govinda will turn 52; Anil Kapoor 59; Salman Khan 50 and Rajesh Khanna would have been 73. Phew! Thats a lot of statistics! Let me wish those whose birthdates I missed a very Belated Happy Birthday. {Isn’t that what we do when we miss some friend’s birthday; wish belatedly ;-)}

Aap Se Humko Bichhde Huye, Ek Zamaana Beet Gaya” – a classic from the 1969 film ‘Vishwaas’. Interesting story behind this song. Kalyanji Anandji had composed this song to be sung by Mukesh. On the day of the recording, for some reason, Mukesh could not be present. Kalyanji Anandji, for the sake of utilizing the recording session, decided to record the song anyway, in another voice. The song was supposed to be re-recorded when Mukesh would be available again for recording. Later, when re-recording was being discussed with Mukesh, he happened to listen to the song that was already recorded. So impressed was he with the voice and the rendering of this specific song, he insisted that the song be retained and included in the film as recorded. Thus was launched the singing career of a mechanical engineering graduate, who had come to Bombay initially, not to become a singer.

Wishing Manhar Udhas many happy returns of his birthday (13th May).
