Hullo Atuldom

“Saagar” (1985) was produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy. Its story, screenplay and lyrics were written by Jawed Akhtar and RD Burman was music director. The movie had 7 songs of which the blog has 5 but in my opinion we have covered six songs as the sad version of ‘saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare’ is found in the comments of post; which means that with today’s post “Saagar” will be YYIIPPEEEED!!!

Song Date of post
Maria o Maria 3 September 2008
Saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare 29 November 2008
Yoonhi gaate raho 9 August 2013
Ho chehra hai ya chaand khila hai 17 June 2018
Sach mere yaar hai 7 November 2020

We can see “Saagar” made its debut in 2008 ( 2 songs) then the next one came 5 years later. The movie waited for another 5 years when Atulji posted ‘chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ and then we had a song last November.

“Saagar” was a star-studded movie (a term which was very commonly used in those times) with Dimple Kapadia (who was making a return to films), Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Saeed Jaffrey, Nadira, Madhur Jaffrey, Kiran Vairale, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, A K Hangal etc. Kishore Kumar, S P Balasubrahmanyam, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh. ‘Chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ got Kishore Kumar his 8th Filmfare award. It was a film that was sent as an entry to the Academy Awards in the Foreign Language category. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan was nominated under the Best Actor and Best Actor supporting categories in the Filmfare awards of that year. He won it in the Best Actor category, his only award in Hindi films. Before that, in 1968, Ashok Kumar was nominated in two categories for ‘Aashirwad’. The movie had a very simple story of two friends falling in love with the same girl with an economic classes clash thrown in for good measure.

I had lots of songs to choose from for today’s post to wish Dimple Kapadia on her 64th birthday. This song from ‘Saagar’ gives us a glimpse of how beautiful Dimple is/was. How gorgeous her hair is/was. How elegant she is/was. Though she had signed ‘Saagar’ first other movies like ‘Zakhmi Sher’, ‘Lava’, ‘Manzil Manzil’ etc released first. She has since been seen in many movies where her characters have showed emotions, drama, action etc.

It was not easy writing out the lyrics to this song. There are so many different styles of breathing intonation, I didn’t know if the sound ‘ssh’ with which the song begins is a word or the character catching her breath when the hero touching her. But all-in-all a very romantic song and there is a beautiful play of lights reflecting off the waters of the pool.

Happy Birthday Dimple. may you have many more…

Hullo Atuldom

Last year, this post of mine spoke of “Sholay” inspired movies. Today’s song is from another “Sholay” inspired movie.

“Aandhi Toofan” that released in 1985 was directed by B. Subhash and produced by Pahlaj Nihalani. It had a cast of Hema Malini, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kajal Kiran, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakravarthy, Shashi Kapoor (if I remember right, his was a special appearance), Danny, and Raj Kiran, Mac Mohan, Mazhar Khan, Tej Sapru, Sudhir etc. etc.

The cast of this movie has two actors who were part of the Hindi film industry since 1948:- (1) Sajjan who played Hema Malini’s father in “Johnny Mera Naam” was her servant in this one. (2) Raj Mehra who has played senior characters in many movies up till 1993 was Hema’s father in this.

The story was very very simple. Shashi Kapoor, a cop, arrests Balvir (Danny) who in turn wrecks havoc and kills the cop’s family. He then captures the cop who has gone on his trail, ties him up and when the new-bride goes to try and save him Balvir rapes her brutally in addition to killing the cop. The widowed wife (Hema) takes it on herself to seek revenge. She seeks help of two men Ballu (Mithun) and Raghu (Shatru) in this mission. The story is that simple.

I was reminded of today’s because of Prakashchandraji’s comment on this post. Exactly a year back I had a posted for “Gaana Kogile” (singing cuckoo in Kannada) or Isaikkuyil (as in Tamil for cuckoo) or the “Nightingale of South India’s” 82nd birthday. It is a year already and here we are wishing S. Janaki or Janakiamma, as her South Indian fans & film folks call her, on her next birthday. Here is wishing her health and happiness.

The song is a stage dance. We have Hema Malini performing almost like the Shiv-Taandav with flashbacks of the wedding and happenings that followed it. The song was written by Anjaan and Bappi Lahiri is the music director.

Hullo Atuldom

Today is a special day for Kaka fans. It would have been his 78th birthday.

On this occasion here is a song which is from Kaka a.k.a Jatin Khanna popular among his fans as Rajesh Khanna’s productional debut. “Alag Alag” (1985). It was produced by Rajesh Khanna and Kusum Narula, under the banner of Aashirwaad Films International, Bombay.

A small anecdote is noted – that Kishore Kumar did not accept any payment for his singing assignments in this film. He said that he felt indebted to Rajesh Khanna and ‘Aradhana’ for catapulting his career to a new high, and this being Rajesh’s first film as a producer, he would sing for him without accepting any payments.

The star cast of this film is listed as Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Deven Verma, Sushma Seth, Gita Siddhartha, Urmila Bhatt, Anjana, Raj Rani, Rajesh Puri, Subiraj, Asit Sen, Bharat Bhushan, Bhagwan, Satyen Kappu, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Vikas Anand, Manmauji, Manik Dutt, Sunil Dhawan, Gurbachhan, with special appearance by Bindu and friendly appearances by Om Prakash and Om Shivpuri. Music director was Kaka’s favorite RDB who was instrumental in securing Kak’s position as a superstar in the beginning of the ’70s. Anand Bakshi another of those responsible for the Kaka phenomenon was the lyricist. And finally the director was Shakti Samanta- the maker of ‘Aradhana’, ‘Kati Patang’ ‘Amar Prem’ etc. All-in-all the movie had everything that would have ensured a success at the box-office.

It seems that it was inspired from a Pakistani film “Meherbani” that released in 1982. It is remembered for its different story-line and its picturesque locales-Kashmir. I am sure our Nahmji has mentioned this in one of her recent posts about how she went location-spotting on her tour of Kashmir. One of the reviewers of this movie has mentioned that this was a movie where Tina Munim showed sparks of being a dedicated actress.

Sudhirji has given the story of the movie in this writeup. Sudhirji’s post mentions that the Geet Kosh has listed seven songs for this movie in addition to the song that he had unearthed.

Today we will be having the fifth song of ‘Alag Alag’ which is sung by Rajesh Khanna’s voice Kishore Kumar. It is reminiscent of all the melodious and melancholic songs of the period when Kaka was on his upward movement. It has his eyes doing all the speaking. Lata Mangeshkar sings for Tina Munim.

Wishing he was still with us.

Song-Tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin (Alag Alag)(1985) Singers-Lata, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

aaaaa aaaaa
aaaaa aaaaa
kaagaz kalam dawaat le ye kissa likhe koi

kaagaz kalam dawaat le ye kissa likhe koi
raanjha raanjha karte phir ik heer deewaani hoyi
jab se tujhko dekha aa aa aa
jab se tujhko dekha hai
main sabko bhool gayi hoon
auron ki kya baat karen
main rab ko bhool gayi hoon
tere naam ke siwa aa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin

kya shaadi kya doli kaise chaar gavaah kya kaazi
duniya se kya lena dena
dil raazi rab raazi

jogi ban ko jaaye ae ae ae
jogi ban ko jaaye
mujhko jaana tere dwaare
tere dwaare ko jaate
duniya ke raste saare
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
mujhe kya ho gaya kuchh yaad nahin
toone kya kar diya mujhe yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin

laaj ke pehre toot gaye
na toota pyaar ka waada
jab jab shyaam ne bansi chhedi
tadap uthhi ye raadha
prem ke raste mein hai oonche ae ae
ho o
prem ke raste mein hain unchhe parvat saagar gehre
hum premi aankhon se andhe aur kaanon se behre
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin

mujhe kya ho gaya kuchh yaad nahin
toone kya kar diya kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin

Hullo Atuldom

“Saagar” (1985) had a cast of Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Hasaan, Saeed Jaffery, Nadira, Sharat Saxena, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, Lilliput and Madhur Jaffery. It was directed by Ramesh Sippy and was produced by G P Sippy’s ‘Sippy Films’. It was a vehicle for Dimple’s comeback into Bollywood after her sabbatical brought on by marriage and family life. She was making a comeback after a gap of about 11 years. Her heroes were also her age group so they made an eye-pleasing team.

“Saagar” was a simple love story of a rich boy falling in love with a ‘not-so-well off girl’ who helps her father run a tavern in a fishing village . She has a childhood friend (Kamal) who loves her but cannot get himself to profess it. Into this village the rich boy (Rishi) walks in, befriends Raja (Kamal) and falls in love with Mona (Dimple). There is also friendship between the three, almost reminiscent of Raj Kapoor’s “Sangam”. We have Ravi’s (Rishi) grandmother playing the spoke in the cartwheel of the lovers. We also have one friend sacrificing his love for the happiness of the other two.

All-in-all nothing spectacular just that the movie was entertaining and we had the lead actors giving good performances. The songs were written by Javed Akhtar, and RD Burman was the composer. He had Kishore Kumar (who won a Filmfare award for “Saagar kinaare”), Lata Mangeshkar, S P Balasubramaniam, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh singing the songs in the movie.

I am writing this post to wish the superstar of South Indian cinema on his 66th birthday. He has been in the industry from a young age. He began as a child-actor and I have written a brief about him in this post of mine four years ago. So let us get directly to the song and marvel at this actor’s ability to emote with his eyes.

The song is sung by SPB and is a party song which is a celebration of the characters birthday. It has Nadira and Lilliput who are aware of Raja’s feelings and Saeed Jaffery and others who are oblivious. The song also begins with RD’s trademark of making music with unusual instruments; here he has used a comb.

Wishing Kamalhassan all health and happiness today on his 66th birthday.

Song-Sach mere yaar hai (Saagar)(1985) Singer-S P Balasubrahmaniam, Lyrics-Jawed Akhtar, MD-R D Burman

“Aakhir Kyon”(1985) was produced and directed by J Omprakash. Now I realise why this movie title starts with the letter “A”. 🙂

The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Smita Patil, Rakesh Roshan, Tina Munim, Asrani, Sujit Kumar, Shubha Khote, Beena Bannerjee etc in it.

THe movie was a archtypical South Indian “social” movie. Peevesie’s mom, while discussing one earlier song from the movie had provided this summary of the story of the movie

That movie had a very topical theme of a wife (Smita Patil) being abandoned by her whimsical husband (Rakesh Roshan) for another girl (Tina Munim). The story goes on to show Smita becoming a TV anchor (she was one prior to coming into movies) and then graduating to a Novelist. Then it turns out that when her husband’s business falls in bad times he approaches her; requests her to write for him; so that he can get their daughter (whom had forcibly kept with himself at the time of separation) married decently. That is the gist of the movie. We also had a partly bald Rajesh Khanna playing a TV (DoorDarshan) cameraman who admires Smita for her rebounding power and is a support to her throughout.

This movie came at a time when DD was the only channel available and people used to have one TV in their drawing rooms. And whole families used to sit and watch whatever was dished out to them. Otherwise I cannot imagine an entire family sitting and watching this kind of a musical show on TV these days. Also those were the days when people used to quote Rani Jhansi in all their speeches. Also Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher were sources of inspiration.

The movie had five songs in it. Four songs have been covered so far, with the movie making its debut in the blog in 2008, the first year for the blog !
Here are the details of the song covered in the blog :-

Blog post number Song Date posted
422 Dushman na kare dost ne wo kaam kiya hai 21 December 2008
5603 Saat rang mein khel rahi hai 8 March 2012
9544 Komal hai kamzor nahin tu 8 March 2014
15696 Ek andhera laakh sitaare 2 July 2020

We can see from the table that second and third song from the movie were discussed on 8th march (2012 and 2014) on the occasion of Women’s day. It shows that the movie had some sort of “Women’s empowerment” message in the movie.

Today (17 october 2020) happens to be the birthday anniversary of Smita Patil (17 October 1955- 13 December 1986). On this occasion, here is the fifth and final song from “Aakhir Kyon”(1985) to appear in the blog.

This song is sung by Lata. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song is picturised as a get together song where Smita Patil lip syncs this semi classocal song while others, including Tina Munim, Rakesh Roshan and others look on. Tina Munim also uses this opportunity to fantasise about Rakesh Roshan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

With this song, all the five songs of “Aakhir Kyon”(1985) are covered in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog. This movie took nearly 12 years (3753 days to be precise) to get YIPPEED.

This song is the 3600th song of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer in the blog.

13/10/2020 – 33rd death anniversary of Kishore Kumar
——————————————————————————–

Today is that day when we all remember the phenomenal Kishore Kumar. I should have planned ahead, but could not do so. Firstly I am working on so many posts at once that it is becoming a blur what is done and what is not. Secondly, I was under the weather for the whole weekend, and antibiotics make me more blurred than anything else.

Well, a post is to be done so one must look for a song. There are scores of songs to choose from. I have thought of a song from “Kaaran”, but I found today that it is already posted. Next I thought of the song from Poonam(1981) “main hoon haseena khol darwazaa dil ka”, which is not posted, but it turned out to be Amit Kumar’s song. It is possible for me to confuse Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar songs, as both sing in the same style and have similar voices. For example for a long time I was under the impression that bade achche lagte hain from Baalika Badhu is Kishore Kumar singing.

Then I looked for songs in the year 1980, thinking how there were so many songs which Kishore Kumar sang with Mohammed Rafi sahab. There was a pattern there where songs of major film in 1979, 1980 and 1981,in movies like, Shaan, Abdulla, Dostana, Naseeb, Karz, The Burning Train, Jaani Dusham, Kaala paththar, Raajput, The Great Gambler, Aap ke deewane, Aap to aise na thhe, Aas Paas, Bulandi, Ham Paanch, Raam Balram, Swyamvar , Kaalia, Khuda Qasam, Deedar-e-Yaar etc. were divided among the two of them.

Not specifically looking for Rafi-Kishore song, almost decided on a background Kishore solo from “Apne Paraaye”, which is a sad song, with everyone crying (there are many characters including Shabana Azmi) except Amol Palekar, who is smiling in his inimitable way. This is a “afsardaa” or a despairing category song.

But I moved beyond this one too and have landed on a song from “Zabardast” (1985). I am glad to be listening and viewing this song. I have not seen this movie either, but it was a multi-starrer of a kind and four of those stars are present in this outdoor picnic song. What with school kids carrying colour full flags, school bus, Rajeev Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri with an umbrella as a prop, Bagpiper like music in the interlude, and two cars on Table land of Panchgani.

Give me such songs anytime, I prefer these type of songs to club, party or dance songs. The song starts with Rati Agnihotri and Rajeev Kapoor arguing on Table land, Sunny Deol and Jayaprada march in with the school kids carrying flags. Sunny Deol hands over the white flag to Rati Agnihotri as a peace offering and Rajeev Kapoor starts singing the song. The Umbrella prop is visible throughout.

Song is a solo by Kishore Kumar, entirely sung on screen by Rajeev Kapoor, who is trying to woo Rati Agnihotri. Sunny Deol and Jaya Prada are also present and looking on. A good, catchy and feel good song, composed by R. D. Burman and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

This movie is making its debut here with this song. Out of total 2709 songs recorded by Kishore Kumar 1209 are posted in the blog.
A tribute to the ‘harfanmaula’ on this Remembrance Day.

Lata Mangeshkar – 91st birthday on 28/09/2020
————————————————————————–
Today is the day when the “Nightingale of India”, Lata Mangeshkar was born 91 years ago.

In 1973, she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song “Beeti Na Bitaayi” from the film Parichay, composed by R. D. Burman, and written by Gulzar.

In 1975, she again won the National Award, this time for the song “Roothe Roothe Piya” from the film KoraKaghaz, composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

She won her third National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her rendition of the song “Yaara Sili Sili” from the film “Lekin”, which was composed by her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

In 2001, Lata Mangeshkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
A lot of information about her early days, family background and career progress are available here.

I have selected a song from 1985 to post on this occasion. Scores of her hit, known and popular songs from all decades are yet to be posted, so it was no easy task to arrive at a single song. This is a solo from the film ‘Arjun”, written by Javed Akhtar and composed by R. D. Burman. It is a typical, teasing and appeasing song, where hero Sunny Deol and Heroine Dimple are running around usual garden locations in Mumbai, while Dimple is singing this song by LataMangeshkar. Actually the stanza’s are very uplifting and motivating for someone who is dejected. Sunny deol looking like a petulant child and Dimple is trying to make him see the positive side of things. The encouraging tone sounds less romantic and more children’s song, if only heard. I was a fan of Dimple those days, and saw her few films. I thought I might have seen this one too, but when I found the video, it was clear that I was seeing it for the first time. The catchy tune and song I knew well, but remembered only the mukhda bit with hazy re-collection of words. All these years I have been humming this song, sometimes using “Neeli neeli aankhon”, after “neele neele ambar par” which was also a favourite. My sister would often correct me that it is ‘Bhoori bhoori” not ‘neeli neeli”.

I heard the pop/rock song ‘kokokorina” by Ahmed Rushdi sometime back. Stumbled upon the song at Wikipedia page on Kishore Kumar, to be precise. I heard the song, it didn’t ring a bell, so I had never heard it before. But the song seemed somewhat familiar as if its tune is taking me to some other song. On hearing it a few more times, I landed on this sometime ‘neeli’ and sometime ‘bhoori bhoori aankhon wala ekladka hai” song. I have since searched the net to find if there is a connection, or only I feel like that. Seems I am the only one who could connect these two songs. The RDB page on itwofs.com features as many as 42 songs, linking to inspiration and similar tunes. But this case of “Arjun’ song is not listed there.

I see that in the Wikipedia page also this song is mentioned in relation to RDB songs by Lata in the 80’s :

Some Rahul Dev Burman compositions for Lata in these years include “Aaja Sar-e-Bazaar” in Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (1980), “Bindiya Tarase” in Phir Wohi Raat (1981), “Thodi Si Zameen” in Sitara (1981), “Kya Yahi Pyar Hai” in Rocky (1981), “Dekho Maine Dekha” in Love Story (1981), “Tune O Rangeele” in Kudrat (1981), “Jaane Kaise Kab” in Shakti (1982), “Jab Hum Jawan Honge” in Betaab (1983), which became instantly popular, “Humein Aur Jeene” in Agar Tum Na Hote (1983), “Tujhse Naraaz Nahin” in Masoom (1983), “Kahin Na Ja” and “Jeevan Ke Din” in Bade Dil Wala (1983), “Jaane Kya Baat” in Sunny (1984), “Bhoori Bhoori Aankhon” in Arjun (1985), “Sagar Kinare” in Sagar (1985), “Din Pyar Ke Aayenge” in Savere Wali Gaadi (1986). “Kya Bhala Hai Kya”, “Khamosh Sa Afsana” and “Seeli Hawa Chhoo” in Libaas (1988).

I have made a very brief list of such songs, which starts with ‘tu meri zindagi hai”, and if two posts for today are over, then two more songs in the list remain.

As for the blog, Lata Mangeshkar’s tally stands at 3589 out of 5645.

With sixes galore, turning the matches in IPL, I will end this post with this very positive stanza of the song:

tu maane na maane aisa din aayegaa
jab duniyaa ke chehre se gham dhul jaayegaa
phool khilenge rang hansenge aanchal aanchal
aangan aangan goonjengi khushiyon ki paayal

Hullo Atuldom

Holi kab hai? kab hai holi? kab? kab?” – these are the famous lines mouthed by the most dreaded daaku of Ramgarh. He was wanted ‘dead or alive’ and carried a reward of ‘pachhas hazaar’ on his head. And from his den he declared rather pompously “Yahan se pachhas pachhas kos door gaon mein … jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so ja … so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega”. With the most simple and not-so-profound dialogues like ‘Kitne Aadmi The’, ‘Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya’ andTera kya hoga Kalia’, Gabbar Singh alias Amjad Khan had arrived on the Bollywood scene, giving life to one of the most celebrated and iconic characters in Hindi cinema.

Born in undivided India’s Peshawar in 1940, he was the first child of actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan). He was a bright student who had a Masters in Philosophy and loved to read English poets like Keats and Wordsworth and could debate on political theories or philosophies of Plato, Socrates and even Dr. Radhakrishnan. After his M.Phil he ventured on to the world of theatre to give a chance to his passion of acting that he had inherited from his father. That is where he was spotted by the writer duo Salim-Javed who recommended him to Ramesh Sippy and rest of the story is well known to all the fans of this wonderful actor.

That was 1975. Post ‘Sholay’ Amjad Khan went on to live a number of memorable characters on celluloid. Can anyone forget the risk-taking best friend Bishan of Kishan (Amitabh) in ‘Yaarana’,  or the funny policeman of Kumar Gaurav’s debut ‘Love Story’. He was unforgettable as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’. What versatility. He was happy that his directors and writers saw more than a villain or a daaku in him and thanked them for not typecasting him else, we would never have seen his comic timing and his mastery in emoting any kind of role.

Today it is 28 years since his passing and we have a song that shows him trying to shake a leg with Mithun. The song is penned by Farooq Kaiser and set to tune by Bappi Lahiri. It is from the 1985 release ‘Maa Kasam’ which was directed by Shibu Mitra & had a cast of Mithun, Amjad Khan, Ranjeet, Divya Rana, Sushma Seth and Pran. It was a typical masala movie complete with dances where the lead actors are in disguise etc.

I stumbled on this song recently and filed it away to post it in remembrance of Amjad Khan. It is sung by Mohd Aziz, Vijay Benedict and Parvati Khan. We also have Kalpana Iyer as part of the group dance. We can also see Guddi Maruti and Sundar present in this clip. Just to know why everyone is dressed in tribal outfits which the Red Indians will claim as their traditional wear I need to see this movie.

Today (2 july 2020) is the 66th birth anniversary of Sayeed Mohammed Aziz-un-Nabi, better known as singer Mohammed Aziz (2 July 1954 – 27 November 2018).

I was under the impression that he made his debut as a playback singer in 1970s. I was mistaking him with Anwar, who began his career in 1970s. Mohammad Aziz made his debut as a playback singer in HFM in 1984. He shot to fame with “Main mard taange waala”, the title song of “Mard”(1985). He then sung some other memorable songs. One of them being “Mai se meena se na saaqi se”.

On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here is a song from “Aakhir Kyon”(1985). This song is sung by Md Aziz. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song gets played on a radio / two in one while Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil, playing an estranged couple, look on.

The lyrics of the song are quite inspirational. The lyrics makes this song a forgotten gem.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

duniya ki ye bagiyaa aisi
jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
duniya ki ye ae ae bagiyaa aisi
jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
daaman mein khud aa jaayenge
jinki taraf tu haath pasaaare
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

beete huye kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
beete hue kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
jaane kaun kahaan se aakar
raahen teri phir se sanwaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
toofaanon se lad kar hi to
lagte hain saahil kitne pyaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaaare
ek niraasha laakh sahaaare
sabse badi saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hain jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae ae ae

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you don’t feel pain”.

Thus spoke Bob Marley (1945-1981), the famous Jamaican singer and songwriter, about the power of music. From the most casual to the most formal, every activity, every endeavor of human existence is in one form or another, quite inextricably linked with music. Music pervades our lives and our beings. In many an instance, music appears quite unexpectedly in our lives.

Back in 1981, the Minister of Culture of France was a gentleman by the name Jack Lang. He appointed Maurice Fleuret as the Director of Music and Dance. One observation Maurice had about the cultural ethos of France – “the music everywhere, the concert nowhere”. He conducted a sample survey of the French population. The survey brought out some very interesting results; the most important one was which established that almost half the population was adept at playing one or another type of musical instrument.

Armed with this result, Maurice dreamt of bringing this talent for music, out in the open. Working with his minister, Maurice set out to design a method which would allow common people to be able to perform for others. From this pursuit was born the concept of ‘Fête de la Musique’ or the ‘Festival of Music’. After preparing and communicating for many weeks, finally the date for this public festival was decided as 21st June. In the year 1982, this event was rolled out across the length and breadth of France.

Ever since, the phenomena has spread to practically everywhere. This festival is now held in more than a thousand cities across 170 countries.

One basic feature of this celebration is that it is free. The artists and musicians perform for free. And also, all performances are free for the viewing public.

When writing about music, I have occasionally fallen back on the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’, for a suitable song for the post. Once again today, as I write to celebrate this worldwide event, I bring to the readers another wonderful song that tells about the nature and practice of music. The beginning words of this song lay out such an adept definition,

saadh re mann sur ko saadh re
ek mann ko doosre se baandh re

Yes, a force that brings together and binds the minds and hearts of people. Need I say more – the experience of the regulars of this musical bandwagon will speak for itself.

As I noted in my write up for the song “Aaye Sur Ke Panchhi Aaye”, as far as the memory serves, the film ‘Sur Sangam’ is probably the last film that I can remember, that has music as its central theme. After 1985, I cannot recall any other Hindi film built on the theme of music.

The film is a Hindi remake of the iconic Telegu film ‘Shankarabharnam’. It has been produced by V Ramesh for Vijay Madhavi Pictures, Madras and is directed by K Vishwanath. The eminent star cast of this film includes Girish Karnad, Jayaprada, Sachin, Sadhna Singh, Deven Verma, Bharti Achrekar, Paintal, Tabassum, Asrani, Bhushan Tiwari, Dina Pathak, Mohan Choti, OP Singh, Jeet Mohan, Sulabha Deshpande, SP Dubey, Urmila, Master Akash Singh and Baby Mamta.

The film has a set of very wonderful 11 songs, all written by Vasant Dev, and set to wonderful classical melodies by Lakshmikant Pyaarelal. Five songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. And the sixth makes its appearance today on the occasion of the World Day of Music. The singing voice is that of Rajan Sajan Misra.

May there be delightful music today, and every day in our lives.
