#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

Today 24th December 2024 is the One hundredth birth anniversary of the legendary singer – ‘divine voice’ – Mohd Rafi. He was born on 24th December 1924 and he passed away on 31st July 1980. Today’s day is another important day for us music lovers all over the world. This day marks the ‘centenary birth celebrations’ for this great singer.

We are all aware of Mohd Rafi as a great singer and a great human being. A lot has already been written about Rafi Saab on this blog, and in print and digital media. And till Hindi Film Music will be listened on this planet the voice-the name- Mohd Rafi will always be discussed, read and experienced in his song.

While thinking for the presentation of songs for today’s occasion I thought I would go with the same pattern as I had followed for Rafi Saab’s death anniversary and Kishore Kumar’s birth and death anniversary. So, I will start with the decade of 1941-1950 first.

I was under the impression that there would be no Rafi song remaining to be posted at least from the decade of 1941-1950. But it turns out that we still have Rafi songs from movies like ‘Jalte Deep’, Amar Prem’, ‘Surajmukhi’, ‘Alakh Niranjan’ etc to be discussed on this blog.

To start with I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Surajmukhi-1950’ which has only one song in Rafi Saab’s voice, and this song is yet to be covered on the blog. I am presenting this sales-pitch song which is in multiple versions. The happy version is in the voice of Mohd Rafi and the melancholic version is in the voice of Geeta Roy-Dutt.

“Surajmukhi-1950” was directed by O.P. Dutta for ‘Madhuban, Bombay’. It had Rehana, Shyam, Gope, Yashodhara Katju, Hafiz Khan, Randheer, Mukri, Kuckoo, Durga Khote and others. This movie was a movie from ‘social’ genre. “Surajmukhi-1950” has ten songs composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram. There were three lyricist who contribute the lyrics writing viz. Rajinder Krishan, Aabid Gulrez, and Gulshan Jalalabadi. However, the lyricist’s name for individual songs is not mentioned in Geet Kosh (Vol-II, 1941-1950), except for two songs. The singer list for this movie includes Geet Dutt (Geeta Roy then), Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, S.D. Batish, and Shamshad Begam.

Here is what our in-house encyclopaedia Shree Arunkumar jee has mentioned in his comment on the first song from this movie which was posted on the blog on 16.04.2011.

“It was a love story of rich boy-poor girl type routine plot, but the handling was so naive, being Dutta’s only second movie, that it only added misery to the weak storyline. The movie did not run much in those days when other excellent films of 1950 were patronised by the public.”

Later, while presenting the second song from this movie our senior Shri Sadanand Kamath jee had mentioned in detail about this movie. He also shared some information while commenting on other song from this movie. I have compiled his two comments related to the movie information which is as given below.

“While browsing through the pages of 1949 issues of ‘Filmindia’ magazine, I came across the first advertisement of the film in January 1949 issue in which the names of Pran, Ram Singh, Sapru, VH Desai and Mumtaz Ali was indicated among the actors. But there were no names of Shyam, Gope, Randhir etc. The film was supposed to be directed by K Amarnath and C Ramchandra was to be the music director. However, in the subsequent advertisements, names of Pran, Ram Singh and VH Desai were replaced with Shyam, Randhir and Gope respectively. VH Desai was replaced by Gope as the former expired before the film’s shooting commenced. C Ramchandra was replaced by Husnlal-Bhagatram. However, the name of K Amarnath as director continued to appear in the advertisements. Going by the monthly progress reports of the films under production which appeared in ‘Filmindia’ magazines, K Amarnath seems to have directed a part of the film. It was only at the mid-stage that such reports carried the name of OP Datta as director of the film. However, in the final shooting report in December 1949, it was mentioned that the film was completed under the direction of O P Dutta. [Source: various issues of ‘Filmindia’ Magazine of 1949]. The film has 10 songs written by Rajendra Krishan, Gulshan Jalaalabaadi and Abid Gulrez which were set to music by Husnlal-Bhagatram. I will not be surprised if the film had become a hotch-potch with so many changes and failed at the box office. I also doubt whether there was consistency in using playback singers for heroine and the side heroine. The only solitary song of Shamshad Begum in the film may have been picturised on Cuckoo.”

The song under discussion was the only Rafi song in this movie ‘Surajmukhi-1950’ as per information given in Geet Kosh Vol-II. The name of the lyricist is not known. Music is composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram.

Avinash ji,

This is such a sweet, happy and melancholy version song. I am always looking for Husnlal-Bhagatram songs, so I might have missed it in the list. Great remembrance post. Listen to this song, something which was deserves to be better known in Rafi-Geeta Dutt version songs: https://atulsongaday.me/2020/03/11/so-jaa-re-so-jaa-mere-laal/ Thanks and regards.
