‘Raaz Ki Baat’ (1970) was produced by N A Yusuf under the banner of Zainab Pictures and was directed by Bolton Ci Nagi. The cast included Sujit Kumar and Simi Grewal in lead roles supported by Abhi Bhattacharya, Shyama, Nigar Sultana, Sulochana, K N Singh, Hiralal, Madhumati, Agha, Ulhas. Mohan Choti etc.
There seems to be some uncertainties about this film’s release. Online information gives two different years for the film – 1962 and 1970. From the star cast, the film appears to have been completed in early 1960s. The film’s VCD is available online for watching but it does not have the Censor Certificate. My guess is that the film did not have a theatrical release but after a few years, the film may have been released on the video format. The reason for my guess is that in the credit titles, name of Video Editor and ‘recreated at Rashika Videotech’ have been mentioned.
I have recently watched the film which belongs to mystery genre with a shade of family drama. I doubt whether the film has been properly edited or the final editing has been done before releasing it as a video film. Four out of the six songs in the film appear without any context. Few scenes in the film appear without any continuity of the story. With these limitations, I have attempted to assemble the story of the film which is as under:
The film opens with Thakur Rai Sahab (Chaman Puri) who has just recovered from his illness. He has called his close friend, Bachan Singh (Ulhas), whom he trusts more than his Manager, Mangaldas (Hiralal). He has decided to hand over the key of the room with his ancestral wealth to Bachan Singh as a custodian, to be passed on to his two sons, Ashok Rai (Abhi Bhattacharya) and Kishore Rai (Sujit Kumar) when they return from abroad after competing their education. After handing over the key of his ancestral wealth room to Bachan Singh, Thakur Rai Sahab dies of heart attack.
Mangaldas, who has set his eye on Thakur Rai Sahab’s wealth, does not like he being sidelined. He tries to influence Bachan Singh to hand over the key to him so that both of them become close friends in the same way he was with Thakur Rai Sahab. Bachan Singh refuses Mangaldas’s offer. Fearing retribution from Mangaldas, Bachan Singh with his wife (Nigar Sultana) and a foster daughter move out of their house to shift elsewhere. However, Bachan Singh is waylaid by Mangaldas and is killed. His dead body is thrown in the river from a hill top. Witnessing the killing of her husband, Bachan Singh’s wife falls down unconscious. Since then, their whereabouts are not known.
Years pass and Ashok with his wife (Sulochana Latkar), his young son and Kishore have been living together in Thakur Rai Sahab’s palace. Mangaldas continues to be in contact with the family. One day, Kishore comes in contact with Kamal (Simi) while he was painting. After initial argument with her for trespassing in his estate, Kishore falls in love with Kamal. One day, he brings Kamal in his house to introduce to his elder brother, Ashok and reveals his intention to marry her. Ashok is not happy with Kishore’s choice of his life partner as he comes to know that Kamal’s sister, Ranjana (Shyama) runs a night club. In the midst of heated arguments between brothers, Ashok slaps Kishore who walks out of the house.
Kishore visits Kamal’s elder sister, Ranjana to take her approval for the marriage. Kamal does not want to go ahead with marriage in a family where she is unwanted. It is at that time Ranjana reveals to Kishore that Kamal is not her real sister but an abandoned child which her father has found on the street. He brought the child home and since then she has treated Kamal as her own sister. In the meanwhile, Kishore having not returned home after he was slapped, Ashok goes in search of him. However, on the way, Ashok is shot at by an unknown person, injuring him. He is hospitalised in an unconscious state.
Police investigation leads to the suspicion on Kishore because Ashok has slapped him and Kishore had walked out of the house, and he has not returned. Kishore is arrested and put under police custody until Ashok regains consciousness and police questions him. Ashok regains consciousness. Although Mangaldas tries to influence Ashok by telling him that it was Kishore who had fired at him. However, Ashok says the person fired at him was not Kishore but someone else. Kishore is released from the police custody and Ashok gets discharged from the hospital.
Meanwhile, Mangaldas has come to Ashok’s house to get hold of the map leading to the room where the royal wealth is stored. However, the ghost of Bachan Singh drives Mangaldas out of the house. Mangaldas also come to know that Bachan Singh’s wife is wandering all over the street and in the forest looking for her foster daughter, Kamal who is also searching for her mother after the revelation made by Ranjana. The ghost of Bachan Singh tries to revive the memory of his wife but she falls unconscious after seeing him. Mangaldas’s men, take her to the hospital to revive her.
After Bachan Singh’s wife regains consciousness, she asks the whereabout of Kamal. Mangaldas tells her that Kamal would be restored to her provided she gives the whereabout of the key to the room where the royal wealth is stored. She agrees and he goes to bring Kamal to the hospital, During this period, Ranjana has heard all the conversations. Ranjana was in love with Mangaldas’s doctor son but but could not marry as she had taken the responsibility of bringing up Kamal. Yet, she kills her beloved for his unethical work and then kills herself. Kishore comes to know about new developments. Kamal is on the run to save herself from Mangaldas who is chasing her to capture. While intercepting Mangaldas, Kishore is overpowered by Mangaldas, and he is about to get hold of Kamal when the ghost of Bachan Singh forces him to walk back to the top of a hill where he loses balance and fall in the river in the same way as he had done to Bachan Singh. The film ends with Kishore and Kamal walking together.
The film’s end is abrupt with some vital linkage to the story missing. For example, it is not known as to what happens to Ashok who has lost his memory after getting released from the hospital. Whether he regains memory and gives his approval for the marriage of Kishore with Kamal. It is also not known as to what happened to Kamal’s mother.
‘Raaz Ki Baat’ (1970) had six songs written by Hairat Sitapuri which were set to music by Robin Banerjee. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the third song, ‘thhaam mujhe gir naa jaaun’ rendered by Subir Sen and is picturised on Sujit Kumar and Simi in a night club owned by Ranjana (Shyama) who can also be seen in the picturisation of the song.
Sujit Kumar pretends to be drunk in front of his beloved, Simi to give her a surprise later. But she is not amused.
