#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Rajesh Khanna’s 82nd Birth Anniversary)
————————————-
Today 29th December 2024 is the eighty-second birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29.12.2024-18.07.2012). On this occasion,we will be paying our tributes to him by presenting a few songs picturised on him.
All the popular songs from his earlier films i.e. from 1969 to 1974-75-76 have already been posted on the blog. Nevertheless, we still have many songs from movies of early eighties onwards that are not yet covered.
The song in this post is from late seventies though. I was keeping a watch on this song for quite some time.
I present this song from the 1978 movie ‘Bholaa Bhaalaa’.
This movie had made its debut on the blog on 30th May 2009 with its beautiful song ‘waqt waqt ki baat hai’. Atul jee had presented this song on the blog and I would like to reproduce here what he said in that post.
Rajesh Khanna’s decline from his superstardom began in the second half of 1970s. During this period, he worked in a few movies which have been consigned to the dustbin of history. How many people, for instance recall this movie called “Bholaa Bhaalaa”? Very few indeed!! And, this song ‘waqt waqt ki baat hai’ from “Bholaa Bhaalaa” in fact very aptly sums up the fate of Rajesh Khanna. It was just a few years ago that Rajesh Khanna could do no wrong, and now, nothing seemed to be going right for him. The times had changed, and changed for ever. And this song puts it very appropriately viz “Waqt waqt ki baat hai”.
Rajesh Khanna who made his debut with ‘Aakhri Khat-1966’ became the heart-throb of millions during late sixties and early seventies. Everybody including children, young generation and people from all sections in the society were taken by his charisma and he became the first superstar of Hindi Cinema. It is being reiterated repeatedly by people who witnessed his superstardom that nobody had the kind of fan following among people that Rajesh Khanna enjoyed during his heydays.
He delivered successful movies that also happened to have and good music in them till mid-seventies. After that new genre of movies replaced his kind of movies where Angry young man would resort to violence to avenge wrongs done to him. This genre of movies were lapped up by moviewatchers. As a consequence, there were fewer takers for movies that made Rajesh Khanna a superstar just a few years ago. The failure of the movie ‘Mehboobaa-1976’ at the box-office finally sealed his fate as the heart throb of the nation. Later, after giving several flop movies , his movies began to earn critical acclaim snd some success again in the early eighties, though they did not rachieve anywhere close to the box office successes of his movies of late 1960s and early 1970s.
“Bholaa Bhaala”(1978) is one of his forgotten and forgettable movies that received lukewarm response from moviegoers. “Bholaa Bhaalaa”(1978), a social movie was directed by Satpal for Venkateshwar Pictures, Bombay. It was produced by V. Gopikrishna. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.04.1978. The title of this movie dedicates this movie to ‘Lord Venkateshwaraa and to the idea of Insurance”.
That must give readers some idea about the story of this movie. The titles of this movie also mention that “the incidents relating to jeewan beemaa co. took place before that nationalisation of L.I.C. (:) )
The cast of this movie has Rajesh Khanna (in double role), Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Joginder, Satyen Kappu, Sulochana, Pinchoo Kapoor, V. Gopal, Sudhir Thakkar, Naaz, Jankidas, Rajkumar, Devraj, Master Chikoo, Shakti, Aashu and others. Jagdeep, Sudheer, Ratnamala, Raj Mehra, Ramesh Deo and Aruna Irani and Deven Verma had a friendly appearance in this movie. The story of this movie was written by Madhusudan Kalelkar and its screenplay was written by V.K. Sharma. The script (the titles mention it as ‘shooting script’ &) and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant. The Chief Editor for this movie was B.S. Glaad.
This movie has six songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. Singers for the songs in this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
Following three movies starring Rajesh Khanna were released during the year 1978:-
| SNo | Movie | Year | Passed by Censor Board on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Bholaa Bhaalaa | 1978 | 25.04.1978 |
| 02 | Naukri | 1978 | 02.06.1978 |
| 03 | Chakravyuha | 1978 | 22.07.1978 |
The song under discussion appears at the beginning of the movie where we see that Rajesh Khanna is playing with children and Deven Verma enters and asks him ‘yahaan bachchon ke saath khel rahaa hai, office naheen jaanaa. chal chal … office chal aur raaste mein kaheen ruknaa mat’ …
But after all our actor is a ‘Bholaa Bhaalaa’ so when he sees a poor ‘cart-puller’ on the road, who is pulling a loaded cart which has more load than his capacity to pull, the hero offers his help and put his bi-cycle on the cart and starts sharing the load by pulling the cart. ‘main madad kartaa hoon, zaraa pichchhe jaao’.
Poor ‘Bholaa Bhaalaa’ hero doesn’t know what is there in the cart. So when one Policewaalaa stops the cart for checking, the ‘poor labourer’ initially pulling the cart runs away leaving his cart. When Police asks our hero ‘kya hai ismein’ he says ‘ismein? pataa naheen’ …
On checking the Police finds a liquor bottle. (I am not aware whether it was illegal to carry liquor bottles liquor bottle hidden under other consignments ) One of the policeman chases the labourer who run away … the other policemen asks the hero ‘kaun ho tum’ … and he introduces himself by lip syncing this song.
Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by R.D. Burman. On screen we have Rajesh Khanna lip-syncing in the voice of Kishore Kumar.
Enjoy !!!
