The small girl in the song with this post celebrates her 52nd birthday today—unbelievable she is so young. The birthday list on our blog says she is 1965 born, also the Filmfare awards list page says she was all of 15 when in 1980 she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her depiction of a rape victim (in ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’). She seems to have been around forever. I just do not want to use the phrase ‘past her prime.’ Come to think of it she is younger to the Khans who are ruling the industry these days.

Born as the eldest child to Pandarinath Kolhapure – a cousin of the Mangeshkars – she was cast as a child actor for the first time in Dev Anand’s ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq’ in 1975. From there she has not looked back and worked with all the three pillars of Bollywood- with Dev Anand in ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq’, Raj Kapoor cast her in ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (1978) and then later in ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), and Dilip Kumar was her co-star in ‘Vidhaata’ (1982). Added to that her filmography shows that there was hardly any big star who has not acted with her; the sole exception being Amitabh Bachchan. She was romantically paired opposite Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra. She got a best supporting actress for her performance in B.R.Chopra’s ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’. That same year saw her in her first heroine role in ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhaana Hai’ opposite to Rishi Kapoor. But her best actress award was for Raj Kapoor’s ‘Prem Rog’. She also got a special award for ‘Ahista Ahista’ (1981).  She took a break after marrying Tutu (Pradeep) Sharma in 1989 and made a comeback in a Marathi film “Chimani Pakhar” in 2003. Last I remember seeing her in a serial on Sony TV with her friend Poonam Dhillon as costar.

Here is wishing this multi-talented, cute, sweet, baby-faced actor a Very Happy Birthday. This song, from the 1978 film ‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan’, is filmed on Nutan, Radha Bartake, Arati Chopra and Padmini Kolhapure – today’s birthday gal. It is written by Indivar, and Usha Khanna is the music director. The film is produced by Sawan Kumar Tak. The playback singers are Arati Mukherjee, Chandrani Mukherjee and ShivangiKolhapure.

Under this series today we have this beautiful ‘Sufi Qawwali’ composed by C.Arjun and which is written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi for the movie ‘Nawaab Sahib-1978’. I have vague memories of watching this movie in late seventies or early eighties, but I do not remember much about this movie or its story line. The only memory of this movie that I had carried over in my growing years and thereafter was this song ‘Hum Mein Hai Kya Ke Hamen Koi Haseena Chaahe’ sung by Mohd Rafi.

Here is a song from Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. It is written by Anjaan and Kalyanji Anandji are the music directors. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar.

This movie had great songs. All Eight of them. But a lousy story line (I can see a whole lot of Atulites chuckling right Rajaji?)

Yesterday (27 april 2017), sometime around noon, I got to hear the very sad news that Vinod Khanna had passed away.
I had logged onto Twitter for a bit – and immediately saw a tweet saying “One of the most handsome actors of Hindi movies. RIP”. My heart sank. Soon it was clear that the person being discussed, and now trending as a hashtag, was our own beloved Vinod Khanna.

Recently a picture of Vinod Khanna had been circulating on social media. It shocked many (including myself) as it showed him in a very frail condition. I, for one, was not even aware that he was ailing. But nowadays, with advances in medical science, you tend to expect recovery, especially for someone barely 70.

It was not to be.

The end was therefore unexpected for me – and I think, for many.

“Chowki Number 11″(1978)) was produced by Siddhartha/ Kuki and directed by V K Sobti. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Zarina Wahab, Jagdeep, Amjad Khan, Kader Khan, Aruna Irani, Katy Mirza etc in it.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This post under this series is not in chronological order as far as my ongoing reminiscences about Rajesh Khanna movies are concerned. But this post fits in this series about Rajesh Khanna. This particular movie “Chakravyooh”(1978) was critically acclaimed for the performance of Rajesh Khanna as also for ‘its offbeat story line’ which was at variance with typical Rajesh Khanna-romantic movies that we were used to.

Subhash Ghai first directed “Kallicharan”(1976). People like me thought that his title was inspired from a leading West Indian batsman of those days namely alvin Kalicharan. Our doubt was confirmed when he named his next movie as “Vishwanath”(1978). 🙂 Vishwanath was a leading Indian batsman of those days. Gavaskar and Vishwanath used to be the two most reliable Indian batsmen of those days. Gavaskar would score runs on placid tracks whereas Vishwanath would score runs on pitches assisting bowlers. India never lost a test match when Vishwanath scored a test century. Vishwanath married Gavaskar’s sister and that way the two of them are jeeja and saala.

“Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se”(1978) was inspired from Eric Segal’s immortal novel “Love Story”.

Majority of movie watchers including me, who watched “Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se”(1978) did not know about the source of inspiration of the movie. The movie was a bo office hit. People wathing the movie liked it for its story and for its music. My own feeling is that the music of this movie may have played the bigger role in ensuring that the movie was a money spinner for Rajshree Productions, the makers of this movie.

Erich Segal’s immortal novel “Love Story” has inspired quite a few movies. The first such movie was a Hollywood movie of the same name that was released in 1970, a few months after this novel was released on 14 february 1970.

Hindi movies have also joined the bandwagon. “Ankhiyon ke Jharokhon se” (1978) was based on “Love Story”. A Rajshree Productions release, this movie was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Hiren Nag. Vrajendra Gaur as the writer had adapted this story, Indianising the movie as much as he could.
