Mukesh and his Composers – 16
—————————————–

Today 27 August, we remember Mukesh on his remembrance day.

My last post on his birthday (22 July) was about his collaboration with Bappi Lahiri. We remain with the Lahiri family in this post too as we discuss the songs sung by Mukesh for Bappi Da’s father Aparesh Lahiri.

There are probably more songs sung by Aparesh Lahiri than the films that he composed music for.

Not much information is available on the net and I request knowledgeable readers to write more on his composing career. From the little information, I could gather in connection with this post, I came across a Bengali film named Subhash Chandra (1966). Needless to say it is based on the life and times of one of the most adored and respected freedom fighters of India, Subhash Chandra Bose.

The film in Bengali language seems to have been quite popular from what I could understand. Mukesh who has sung about a dozen Bengali songs has one song in this 1966 particular film too. The same film was made in Hindi and seems to have disappeared without much popularity. In the Hindi version too, Mukesh has sung the same song with the same tune as the Bengali version.
[Ed Note: As per the Geet Kosh, the Hindi version of this film was released in 1978.]

This is the solitary song sung by Mukesh for Aparesh Lahiri and hence there will be no table in this post. 🙂

Evidently, there has not been much research by me in this post and I apologize for the same. However the details were sketchy and since it was the only sung by Mukesh for the said composer, I did not dig much into the career of Aparesh Lahiri.

Much of these details were provided to me by Shri Harish Raghuwanshi and I am thankful to him.

Before I conclude the post, I would like to repeat what a few noted and eminent personalities have said about Mukesh.

Salil Chowdhury: Each word from his lips was a pearl. No one could sing the way Mukesh did, with the right diction, inflexion and intonation. His vocal timbre was out of this world.

Raj Kapoor: I am just a body, Mukesh is my soul.

Anil Biswas: I have lost my son. (on Mukesh’s passing away)

Needless to say, the above quotes speak volumes about Mukesh; the man with the golden voice, playback singer par excellence and the noble soul.

The voice of Mukesh will forever continue to resonate in the world of music.

Blog Day : 3678 Post No. : 14570

Today (13th August 2018) would have been the 56th birthday celebration, or she would have completed 55 years of age. But that was not to be and we her fans lost her to an alleged “accidental death” on the 24th of February earlier this year. I know I don’t have to spell it out that I am speaking of Sridevi. I am sure it is a greater loss for her family – her daughters and husband. Specially when her daughter has just stepped into Bollywood and had her first release last month. And Jayaprada has put it beautifully in her tribute to her one-time co-star and supposed rival – like any mother Sri was anxious about her daughter’s debut film and audience-acceptance etc.

Instead of talking about how beautiful she was; how talented she was; and about her dances and supremely expressive eyes; or her comic timing, I want to go straight to today’s song. It is from her first ever Hindi release – ‘Solva Sawan’ (1979). It was directed by P Bharathiraja and is a remake of his Tamil original ’16 Vayathinile’, which translates to “at age 16”. The original was a commercial and critical success fetching a National award for S Janaki (playback) and Filmfare Awards for best actor (Kamalhaasan) and special award for Sridevi. Unfortunately, the movie failed in Hindi and nobody noticed the debut of Sridevi and she had to wait for four years to establish herself in Hindi films. And what a career from thereon. Infact she had six or seven releases in 1983 beginning with the extremely successful “Himmatwala” which revolutionised many things in the industry – song picturization, choreography, set decoration (songs with 100s of pots, sarees, chorus dancers etc) and music as a whole. We had songs like: “Ice Cream Khaaogi“; “Ek Aankh Maroon To Rasta Ruk Jaaye“; “Taaki O Taaki“; “Mama Mia Pom Pom” etc. to name a few of the songs that went on to become very popular – I am sure the purists who are reading this list are squirming 🙂 . I am sorry for putting all of them to discomfort but this was the route to Sridevi’s success in Hindi. What followed this wave of inane songs were sensible stuff like “Main Teri Dushman Dushman Tu Mera“; “Kaate Nahi Kat’te Yh Din Ye Raat“; “Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Choodiyan Hain“; “Tere Dil Mein Main Apne Armaan Rakh Doon“;what I am trying to point out is it was one inane song per movie at the most but they initially overshadowed her sensible stuff. But it was a fact that she was a darling of the masses from the time she stepped in front of the camera as a child.

Coming back to today’s song. It is a coming-of-age song where the heroine experiences pangs of love and is expressing it to whoever cares to listen – here it is the nature. And the white dress is supposed to indicate the purity of her feelings towards the veterinarian doctor (it was some actor called Madhukar, didn’t find any details about him on the net) who has arrived in the village and has managed to win her heart. The rest of the cast comprised of Amol Palekar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Dina Pathak. The song is written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music is by Jaidev. The singing voice is of Vani Jairam. Sridevi was actually only 16 when this movie was released.

[Ed Note: The censors certified this film in 1978, and the Geet Kosh carries it in the list of films from 1978. It was probably released in theatres few months later, in 1979.]

Hullo Atulites

The excitement surrounding the 10th anniversary has not yet subsided. We are awaiting posts from a few regulars, hope they don’t hide behind the excuse of laziness and other similar reasons 🙂

22nd July is the 95th birth anniversary of Mukesh Chand Mathur better known the world over as Mukesh; the man who was the voice of Raj Kapoor (mostly), Dilip Kumar, Feroz Khan, Manoj Kumar, Sunil Dutt etc.

He was born in Delhi to Zorawar Chand Mathur and Chand Rani. The music teacher who came home to teach his sister found a pupil in Mukesh who would listen from the adjoining room. His voice was first noticed by Motilal, a distant relative, when he sang at his sister’s wedding. Motilal took him to Mumbai and arranged for music lessons with Pandit Jagannath Prasad. During this period Mukesh was offered a role as an actor-singer in a Hindi film, “Nirdosh” (1941). His first song was “Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho Toh” as an actor-singer for “Nirdosh”. He got his break as a playback singer for actor Motilal in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar with music composed by Anil Biswas and lyrics written by Aah Sitapuri (would like to know more about him).
The first song that Mukesh sang for a Hindi film was “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”. He was a Saigal fan (I don’t know of many who were not a fan of Saigal) and used to imitate his idol. It is said that when Saigal first heard the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” he is said to have remarked, “I don’t recall singing this song.”

Naushad Ali helped him form his own style and before he became voice of Raj Kapoor he had a string of hits with Dilip Kumar in “Mela”, “Andaz”, “Anokhi Ada” etc. His other hits with Dilip Kumar were “Anokha Pyar” with Anil Biswas, “Madhumati” with Salil Choudhary, “Yahudi” with Shankar Jaikishan etc.

Mukesh recorded about 130 songs for Shankar- Jaikishan followed by Kalyanji Anandji. A few years back I had gone to an “Anandji Nite” and was drowned in songs by Mukesh; though there were a few Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar songs too in that program but the number of songs of Mukesh were more. (but I have no complaints, I enjoyed myself)

Many of his songs are still popular and “kai baar yu bhi dekha hain, yeh jo man ki seema rekha hain” from Rajnigandha got him a National Award for Best Playback Singer for the year 1973. His Filmfare Awards were for “Sab kuch seekha humne” Anari, 1959; “Sabse bada nadaan wahi hai” Pehchan, 1970; “Jai bolo beimaan ki” Be-imaan, 1972; and “Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein” Kabhi Kabhie, 1976.

He complained of chest pain when on a tour to the USA, was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead. Lata Mangeshkar completed the concert with his son Nitin Mukesh and bought the body home where a grand funeral was held. On getting the news of his death Raj Kapoor is said to have burst into tears and remarked “I Have lost my Voice.”

Many of his songs were released after his death. “Dharam Veer”; “Amar Akbar Anthony”; “Khel Khiladi Ka”; “Darinda” and “Chandi Sona” in 1977 & in 1978 “Aahuti”, “Paramatma”, “Tumhari Kasam” and “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”. His last known release was for the movie Chand Grahan in 1997 a good twenty years after he went away.

The song with this post is one which was very popular in its times and is still heard on AIR’s Vividh Bharati. It was written by Anand Bakshi who would have turned 88 on 21st July. (Today I am not writing anything about how much I love his work) He wrote it for “Aahuti” which was a movie with a standard storyline, made extremely popular by Manmohan Desai’s movies and B. R. Chopra’s “Waqt” – meaning the movie was a story of a family which gets separated at the start of the movie and reunites before the climax :). The movie had a star cast headed by Rajendra Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan, Parveen Babi, Zaheera, Asha Sachdev and Ajit heading the supporting cast. The movie had five songs one of which “kash aisa hota” has been posted. Today’s song is courtesy Avinashji who was generous enough to send me the lyrics which he had written out back in 2013. Thank you Avinashji specially for adding the Devanagari version too.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 66# Singer – Mukesh
———————————————–——————–

Just few days back I came across this song that I am presenting today. After listening to it I was feeling like maybe I had heard it on ‘radio’ many many years back. When I listened to it once I just kept listening to it again and again and with every new day this song is growing on me, on and on. The song is from the 1978 movie ‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ and it is sung by Mukesh ji.

‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ was directed by BR Ishara for Kaveri Films, Bombay. The cast of actors includes Shekhar Kapoor, Rama Vij, Shamli (New Discovery), Asit Sen, Paintal, Johny Whisky, Aarti, Tiger, Mishri Lal, Mohammad Ali, Amal Sen, Narayan Gwalani, Hameed, Sitaram, Jasbir, Prakash Joshi, Vijay Nangia, Bhaiyalal Sharma, Kashi Prasad Chaurasia and others.

This movie has four songs penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri, Yogesh, Balkavi Bairagi and Dev Kohli. Music for this movie is composed by Shyam Saagar. One song from this movie had been posted on the blog earlier in 2014 i.e. four years back and it was introduced by Sudhir ji – ‘Chupke Se Peechhe Se Aa Ke’ sung by Rafi Saab and lyrics of this song are by Dev Kohli.

As mentioned by Sudhir ji in his post this movie seems to be an ‘obscure movie’ though it contains ‘gems of songs’ (‘veritable gems’ as Sudhir ji has mentioned in his post) as we can say for the earlier song and the today’s song after listening to them. I don’t remember to have heard about this movie earlier and not gone through its information before. It was only after listening to the today’s song that I searched for its details in HFGK Vol V and also read the earlier post on the blog. This movie was passed by censor board on 07.04.1978.

Almost forty years have passed since the movie and its music had been created, however listening to its songs revives the memories of the music of those years and Mukesh ji’s singing of the many other songs for Yogesh ji. Yes, today’s song is penned by Yogesh.

Since the movie was an obscure movie I think its songs were also forgotten easily. I am not able to locate online, the other two songs of this film. As per Geet Kosh, these are solo songs in the voices of Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. We have to search for them and need to bring them here for our listening pleasure. Till then let us listen to this wonderful composition of Shyam Saagar and savour the magic Yogesh ji’s words and Mukesh ji’s singing…

Only the audio of this song is available as of now. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please.

Song – Anuraagi Mann Sab Kuchh Seh Le (Pal Do Pal Ka Saath) (1978) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Shyam Saagar

Lyrics

anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

ik sang tera
parichay gehra
janam janam ka ye naata re
ik sudh kho kar
besudh ho kar
geet tumhaare hi gaata re
do chehron ka tu ik darpan
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

mita’ti nahin hai prem ki rekha
toofaanon ke bhi aane se
tripti adhoori
rah jaati hai
saagar ko bhi
paa jaane se
ho na ho poora tera samarpan
anuraagi mann . . .
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

“Anmol Tasweer”(1978) was directed by Satyen Bose for Children’s Film Society, Bombay. This “Children’s” film had Ashok Kumar (guest appearance), Preeti Ganguly, Anoop Kumar, Birbal, Master Pappu Chagla, Baby Geeta Khanna, Miss Chintu, Praveen Pal, Bhagwan Sinha, Manik Dutt, Subrat Mahapatra, Moolchand etc in it.

It was believed those days that a film featuring many children constituted a children’s movie. And by that yardstic it was a Children’s movie. 🙂

The movie had one song according to HFGK.

Here is that song from “Anmol Tasweer”(1978). The song is a chorus song and the names of singers are uncredited. Loomba Brothers (whoever they were) are credited as the lyricist as well as music directors.

The song picturisation shows several children making fun of the bulk of Preeti Ganguly. Yes, children laughing at a overweight lady was considered light hearted comedy fit for a children’s movie those days.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this movie.

Since this song is the only so9ng in the movie, so “Anmol Tasweer”(1978) makes its debut as well as get YIPPEED in the blog with this song. 🙂 If every Hindi movie had just one song then life would have been much easy for those seeking to post “debutant” as well as “YIPPEE” movie everyday. 🙂

‘Dil Aur Deewaar’ (1978) was directed by K Bapaiyya for Vijaya and Suresh Combines, Madras. The movie had Jeetendra, Mausami Chatterji, Rakesh Roshan, Sarika, Ashok Kumar, Prem Chopra, Vijay Arora, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Madhu Malini, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Rajan Haksar, Pichoo Kapoor, Jagdish Raj etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it.

Today (7 april 2018) is the 76th birthday of Jeetendra. On this occasion, here is a song from ‘Dil Aur Deewaar’ (1978). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised on Jeetendra and Mouhumi Chatterji as an “expression of love” song. The song is picturised in a garden. Could it be the same Vrindavan Garden that was visible in the earlier song posted today ? I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the garden.

With this song, which is also the title song of the movie, ‘Dil Aur Deewaar’ (1978) makes its debut in the blog.

“Dillagi”(1978) was Produced by Kanwar Ajit Singh andBikram Singh Dehal and directed by Basu Chatterjee for BikramJeet Films International, Bombay. This movie had Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Mithu Mukherjee, Devan Verma, Asrani, Urmeela Bhatt, Ritu Kamal, Preeti Ganguly, Kajri, Anjali Paigankar, Manjita,Poornima Jairam, Dulari, Lalita Kumari, Rajan Kapoor,Shobhana Shah,Geetanjali,Manik Chowdhury,Guffi Paintal, Qamar Khan, Bina Bawa etc in it with Friendly appearance by Keshto Mukherjee and Brahmachari and unfriendly Special appearance by Shatrughan Sinha. 🙂

It was described as a “social” movie but it was a romantic comedy bordering on soft erotica. That is what I felt about this movie when I watched it in 1978 (duly bunking my college 🙂 ).

I was perhaps a bit too young and immature for a movie with this story line at that time. With the benefit of hindsight, now I feel that it is a nice movie to be watched with one’s lover/ spouse, rather than a movie to be watched with one’s siblings/ parents etc.

The movie had four songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of these songs :-

Kar gayee mast mujhe phaagun ki hawaa 9584 17-Mar-14
Baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye 14234 4-Apr-18

With time, the movie, and moreso its songs have ended up becoming obscure.

The fourth and final song, the song under discussion is perhaps the most obscure out of the four songs of the movie. This song is sung by Lata and Nitin Mukesh. Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song is picturised as a romantic stage performance song on Hema Malini and Dharmendra dressed like Shakuntala and Dushyanta, immortalised by Kalidas in his Sanskrit epic “Abhigyan Shakuntala”. Lyrics by Yogesh are in pure Sanskritised Hindi, as befitting the genre, and they sound quite appropriate for the picturisation.

Mithu Mukherjee, Preeti Ganguly, Poornima Jairam etc are also visible in the picturisation as backstage support persons. 🙂

Lyrics of this song as well as other details were provided by Prakashchandra, who informed me that the audio version of the song is longer than the video version.

With this song, “Dillagi”(1978) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

“Ganga Ki Saugandh”(1978) was produced and directed by Sultan Ahmad for Sultan Productions, Bombay. This movie , described as a “social” movie was a daaku-drama (as memsaab would describe it). The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Amjad Khan, Pran, Bindu, I S Johar, Jeevan, Farida Jalal, Iftekhar, Anwar Hussan, Jagdeep, Mukri, Satyen Kappu, Nana Palsikar, Mac Mohan, Achla Sachdev, Anju Mahendroo, Tabrez, Murad, Hercules, Keshav Rana, Dulari, Paro Devi, Reddy, Bismillah, Bishan Khanna, Nazir Kashmiri, Ghulam Hussain, Sandow, Tiwari, Kailash, Pardesi, Akbar Khan, Shetty, Sulochana, Fazlu, Gulam Sabir, Aziz, Rajni Gupta, Soni, Jani, Yogesh Chabra, Sanjana, Rishi, Amir Ali, Ramlal, Saleem, Babul etc in it.

“Ganga Ki Saugandh”(1978) had six songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past. Here are their details:-

I had a low opinion of the movie as well as its songs. But when I listened to the last two remaining songs of the movie, I realised that these two songs were sung and picturised superbly.

The previous song was covered yesterday. Here is the sixth and final song from “Ganga Ki Saugandh”(1978) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Anjaan is the lyricist. music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a “teasing” or “nok jhonk” song on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. The lyricist Anjaan has done a superb job in penning the lyrics. The song is quite a catchy song. It was a popular song of its time. Curiously enough, the movie as well as the songs of the movie have ended up becoming “rare” by now. The movie as well as its songs were quite well known to those who lived through 1978 as a grown up/ growing up person.

With this song, “Ganga Ki Saugandh”(1978) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye (Dillagi)(1978) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye
baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye

tum zindagi mein kyun meri aakar
gum ho gaye ho aise mujh ko bhulaa kar
main pyaar tera dil mein sajaa kar
baithhi hoon kab se aas laga kar
dukh mere dil se honthon pe aaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye

aawaaz meri aa jaao sun ke
todo na sapne haaye mere nayan ke
is baar tumse kisi bhi jatan se
main raaz apne saare kah doongi man ke

khaamosh rah ke ye dard paaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye
baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye
tum to na aaye

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha as an expression of love song. This song was quite a well known song of its time, and it is interesting to know that the present day music lovers who were not around in 1978 consider this song as a rare song. 🙂

The movie, as well as its songs were regarded as rather low brow stuff by me those days, vis a vis other Amitabh Bachchan movies and their music. Despite not being much impressed with the movie, I had watched it twice in a Ranchi cinema hall called “Ratan Talkies” which was located quite close to my college. 🙂

While I was familiar with the first couple of lines of the song, it is only now, while noting down the lyrics, I have realised what a nice job the lyricist has done in penning this entire song. The song is picturised quite wonderfully well as well.

Song-Roop jab aisa mila (Ganga Ki Saugandh)(1978) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

roop jab aisa mila
roop jab aisa mila
aisi ada kaise na ho
roop jab aisa mila
aisi ada kaise na ho
bhari bottle ho jawaani ki
bhari bottle ho jawaani ki
nasha kaise na ho
roop jab aisa mila
haaye haaye haaye

arre re teri julmi jawaani
chadhhi nadiya toofaani
arre re teri julmi jawaani
chadhhi nadiya toofaani
ude jab lat mukhde pe
ghata ho paani paani
dekh ke tujhko
julm dil pe bhala kaise na ho
haan julm kaise na ho
roop jab aisa mila
haaye haaye haaye

bagiya ki saari kaliyaan
kheton ki hariyaali
arre paanv taley bichh jaaye
jab chale yoon nakhre waali
hai mukh per subah ki laali
badan phulwa ki daali
hai mukh per subah ki laali
badan phulwa ki daali
bhara har rang mein jaadu
magar dil pyaar se khaali

aisa ho nakhra to phir piyara fida kaise na ho
haan fida kaise na ho
roop jab aisa mila
aisi ada kaise na ho
bhari bottle ho jawaani ki
haay
bhari bottle ho jawaani ki
nasha kaise na ho
roop jab aisa mila
haay haay haay
