Today’s song is from a so-called ” हास्य प्रधान ” (Humorous) film Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo -1955.
I have seen this film and by any standards it is not a humorous film. The story is very weak. Except for the lead pair the other actors are not so well known. Both the film’s director and the Music Director were poor images of their glorious past. The songs are not worth even a one time hearing. The only redeeming feature of this film I found was , I could see 2 old time actors in it, namely Sulochana aka Ruby Meyers and H.Prakash. I saw Ruby after she was seen in her third Anarkali film-1953. I had thought that she had retired, but she was there in this film !
Do you know why I said ” in her third Anarkali film 1953 ” ? That is because, Ruby Meyers aka Sulochana was Anarkali in the first Indian Silent film- Anarkali-1928. Then again she was Anarkali in the first Talkie film on Anarkali( a remake of her film)-Anarkali-1935 and she had also acted in the 1953 version of film Anarkali – not as Anarkali but in a character role to suit her older looks. She is the first and possibly the only actress to have worked in 3 films having the same title and same story !
By the way, the only male actor to have worked in 3 films of the same title and same story was Wazir Mohd. Khan and the film was Aalam Ara- 1931, 1956 and 1973. He had even sung the same song in the 1931 and 1956 versions. Incidentally, Ashok Kumar also acted in 3 films of the same Title. The film was Bandhan-1940, 1956 and 1969, but the stories of all films were different. There was one more film Bandhan in 1998, but Ashok Kumar was not in it.
The cast of the film included Shyama, Sajjan, Mirza Musharraf, Ranjana, Radha Kishen, Raja Gosavi, Vasant Shinde, H.Prakash, Sulochana, Chand Bai, heera sawant etc. Out of the 8 songs written by P.L.Santoshi, I did not like even one song. What a situation for a Music Director like Vinod, who regaled us with his evergreen songs in films like Ek this ladki-1949, Anmol ratan-1950 and Makhi choos-1956.
The weak and non humorous story of this film was…..
The chief artiste of the ” Ha Ha Dancing Party “- Kamala is unmarried. her mother Kalavati, contacts a Marriage Broker, Chaupatlal and fixes her marriage with a wealthy prince Kumar. Unfortunately, Kumar loses all his wealth and the title after the merger of his state in India. He becomes poor, but decides to marry a rich bride. The broker Chaupatlal suggests Roopmati-daughter of Rai Saheb Deen dayal. Same time the broker informs another client, a poor young man called Kumar, that he can not help him. The letters are wrongly delivered.
As a consequence the poor Kumar, with his uncle, reaches Hotel Rajmahal to meet the rich bride Roopmati and her father. But Kamalas friends introduce Kamla to this Kumar and they promptly fall in love. Same time Roopmati with Deen dayal reaches Rajmahal hotel and wants to marry Kumar. At this juncture the Prince Kumar also reaches there to complicate the matter.
Anyway, to the relief of everyone in the audience, the pairs are Poor Kumar and Kamala and Prince Kumar with Roopmati. Both marriages take place and the film ends in a Happy mood.
In all Genres of Hindi films, my favourites are Comedy, Adventure, Mystery and Stunt. I have seen hundreds of comedy films, but remember only those films, which, even today, evoke a smile on the face with the mere mention of those films. I remember, offhand, some such films like Ek this ladki, Hum sab chor hain, New Delhi, Angoor, Khoobsurat, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Bhagam Bhag, Chupke Chupke, Chameli ki shaadi etc. Out of all types of comedy, I feel Situational Comedy is the best one to give laughs.
The Film Industry is one such Magician, which changes the luck of any artist. One case of an actor who debuted in Hindi films with today’s film, was that of Raja Gosavi. His name may hardly be known to Hindi film buffs, but he was a reigning Superstar of Marathi films in the decades of the 1950s and the 1960s. He had studied only upto 4th standard and worked as a booking clerk in a cinema hall at Poona. (In Hindi films, the most well known uneducated big star was Meena Shorey. She could not even write her own name. Instead of signing, she would put her thumb on the contract papers.). Here is some information about Raja Gosavi….
Rajaram Shankar Gosavi (28 March 1925 – 28 February 1998) who was known as Raja Gosavi, was a film and theatre actor, in Hindi and Marathi. He is known as Dilip Kumar in the Marathi movie world.
Raja Gosavi was born on 28 March 1925 in Siddheshwar Kuroli village in Satara district (Maharashtra). Raja Gosavi’s education was up to 4th standard but in his own words he was BA (Born Artist). He has worked as an office boy in the film company of Master Vinayak (father of actress Nanda). Damuanna Malvankar was his mentor. He worked as a prompter with Damuanna’s Prabhakar Natya Mandir.
Raja Gosavi acted in the role of Natsamrat in noted Marathi playwright Kusumagraj’s iconic & milestone Marathi play ‘Natsamrat’ after Dr. Shriram Lagoo. Raja Gosavi was married to famous dance actress Bharati, they have a daughter Shama Deshpande.
Gosavi made his film debut in Datta Dharmadhikari’s ‘Akher Jamle’ in 1952 with Sharad Talwalkar. It was his debut too. Gosavi worked as a ticket-seller at Bhanuvilas Talkies, Pune for a few years and his film ‘Lakhachi Goshta’ opened there, which he promoted by selling the tickets both at the counter and in black. Raja Gosavi acted in 100+ Marathi and 6 Hindi movies. He worked in Ha Ha Hee Hee Hoo Hoo-1955, Bhabhi-1957, School Master-1959, Miya Bibi Razi-1960, Jo huwa so bhool ja-1960, and Private Secretary-1962.
Raja Gosavi died on 28th February 1998 in Pune. In T.M.V. Colony, Pune, Raja Gosavi Road has been named in his honour.
The other unknown actress in this film was Ranjana. You will be surprised to know that she was invited by Bombay Talkies to be Dilip Kumar’s heroine in a film in 1946. She is a case of wrong priorities in life. When the producers lined up with film offers, she left films to get married (which soon misfired). Later, she had to line up at Producers to get roles in films !
Now, hardly anyone knows about this actress who had worked as a Heroine with Dilip Kumar also in his early career. One can not get any information about her in any book or on the internet. Here is some information about her, for our readers.
Ranjana’s real name was Ratan Shantaram Deshpande. She was born in Nagpur on 20-10-1927. While studying in St. Ursula High School, she learnt dancing and music from well known ustads. After passing her 6th standard examination, she came to Bombay to her elder sister, Kusum Deshpande, who was already working as an actress with Minerva Movietone films. Kusum married Vasant Thengadi, a handsome actor in Hindi films of those times.
Kusum arranged for specialised dancing for Ratan in the holidays. Later Ratan was taken to Vijay Bhatt of Prakash pictures for an interview. She was immediately selected and got a role in the famous film Ramrajya-1943. In this film she was Chitralekha, Sita’s sakhi. Vijay Bhatt also changed her name to Ranjana. She was in the payroll of Prakash for Rs. 2000 pm. She acted in films like police-44, Vikramaditya-45 and Hamara Sansar-45. Next films were Nai Maa-46, Zamin Asman-46, Mahasati Vrinda Tulsi-47 etc.
Ranjana was called by Bombay Talkies to do the Heroine’s role opposite Dilip Kumar in the film Milan-46. This film was based on Bangla novel Nauka Doobi written by Tagore. She played the role of Hem Nalini in this film’s Hindi version. The same role was done by Meera Sircar in the Bangla film Nauka Doobi.
After this film, Ranjana was in great demand, but she wanted to quit films and get married to live a simple life. She married a young and handsome writer, Arvind Shukla. But after a few months he fell sick and there was no income. After the death of her first husband, Ranjana,it seems, married one Patwardhan in 1954. She continued working in films till 1975. She also worked in many Marathi films. In all, she worked in about 35 Hindi films or so. Ranjana worked with many big stars of her times like, Prem Adeeb, Prithviraj Kapoor, Jairaj, Dilip kumar, Jeevan, Umakant etc etc
It is interesting to note that her sister and her brother in law acted with her in a few films. Some such films were Zamin Asman-46 and Shaadi se pehle-47. In the film Saajan ka Ghar-48 all three had worked together.
We have many families like this in Hindi films. I remember Zubeida and her mother and sisters, Sitara Devi and her 2 sisters, Nargis, her mother and brothers, Kapoor family, Dilip Kumar, his brother and sister in law, many film couples and families of several film people as examples. Ranjana was perhaps one early example.
Here is a song from today’s 70 year old film, sung by Shamshad Begam and chorus….

Thanks for the post
In you tube, the song is credited to Asha Bhonsle. But in the description under the video panel, song is credited to Shamshad Begum( which apparently is an error ?)

The voice is unmistakably Shamshad Begam. The youtube uploader has given incorrect credit.
