Blog Day :

Today’s song is from a social film-Us Paar-1944.

The film was made under the banner of Sun Art Pictures. It was directed by Chiman Lal Luhar and the music was given by Firoz Nizami, B.A.

Those days, film industry had very few educated persons and those who were graduates, proudly flaunted their degrees after their names. Of course not everyone did that. The director Chiman Lal Luhar was also a Science graduate, but he never put B.Sc. after his name. Not that it added to their popularity or it was in any way helpful in improving their performance but it was a tool to make them more respected in the crowd of film fraternity.

The year 1944 was a time when the world knew that the end of World War II was near, however, till that time the Raw Film shortage was troubling the film makers in India. Black money generated through Black marketing was disturbing the industry. The cost of the filmmaking, which was about a Lakh or so in 1940, had escalated to 5 to 6 lakhs per film. Studio system was weakened due to individual production practices started by black money investors. Star salaries had inflated. Many stars worked on FreeLance basis. The law of war promotion movies was now forcefully implemented. Many producers made War propaganda movies to get the Raw Film at controlled rates. The Government had increased the Entertainment Taxes in Bombay, Madras, UP and CP areas, so the cost of Cinema tickets had increased. Prithvi Theatre was launched by Prithviraj Kapoor. Film artistes gathered under the leadership of EVR Naicker in Madras to form DMK party. M. Karunanidhi was a prominent leader.

Inspite of all this, some good Musical films were made in 1944. Saigal, who arrived in Bombay from Calcutta for good, made his second film in Bombay. New composers, New Heros and New heroines brought a variety of Genres of films made in 1944. Some of the major films of 1944 were….

Bhanwara – Second film by Saigal and Khemchand Prakash in Ranjit in Bombay. Made in just 9 days’ shooting for Saigal, by director Kidar Sharma. It was the second film for Monica Desai too (sister of Leela Desai and wife of Phani Mujumdar).

Bharthari– Last film in India by singer actress Jahan Ara Kajjan who sang her last 2 songs in it. She migrated to Pakistan in the wake of Partition. Very good songs in the film, especially ” Bhiksha de de maiya” by Amirbai and Surendra.

Chal Chal re Naujawan – First film from newly established Filmistan, by the deserters’ group from Bombay Talkies, led by S.Mukherjee and Ashok Kumar. Ashok Kumar sang 6 songs in it for the first and the last time for Ghulam Haider. His song ” Bolo Har Har Mahadev” was very melodious and popular.

Chand – Debut film of Husnlal-Bhagatram team. They were recommended by elder brother Pt. Amarnath, who was the first choice of D.D.Kashyap. After V.Shantaram and his team left Prabhat, this was an attempt by Prabhat to join the mainstream by opting for the first time Non Marathi star cast and Punjabi style musicians. 5 singers were used by H-B for 11 songs. A mild success film.

Daasi – it was a musical from Lahore by Pt. Amarnath- with his favourite Zeenat Begum.

Film Dost produced the evergreen Noorjehan song ” Badnam – muhabbat kaun karen” composed by Sajjad Hussain. This one song alone made them both immortal.

Draupadi – a feeble attempt by Baburao Patel to make a Heroine out of his secretary Sushila Rani.

Gaali – Another film by Sajjad, but with only 3 songs to him and 9 to Hanuman prasad.

Iraada – Pt.Amarnath brought Hemant Kumar as a Debutant singer.

Ismat – The first and the only film of the brothers Pt. H.P.Sharma and Pt. Govardhan pershad, as a composer team.

Jwar Bhata – Devika Rani’s discovery, Dilip Kumar’s first film. He was the side Hero and the Hero was Agha. Actress Mrudula also debuted as Dilip’s Heroine.

Krishna Bhakt Bodana – The only film of the Revolutionary Poet singer Master Vasant from Surat. Avinash Vyas, Shankar rao Vyas composed music, while S.N.Tripathi gave background music.

Musical film Lal Haveli – Only time when Noor Jehan and Surendra sang together under Mir Saheb.

Mann ki Jeet – W.Z.Ahmed brings new Heroine Neena, who sings in the voice of Debutante Sitara of Kanpur in all her films. Neena was a Non-Singer.

My Sister – Saigal goes back to Calcutta to complete a Musical film ” My Sister”. Pankaj Mullick gives excellent songs by saigal and others.

There were two films ‘Panchhi‘ and ‘O Panchhi‘ with average songs.

Panna – A war propaganda film based on the ” Mata Hari” story, with a new Heroine Geeta Nizami. MD Amir Ali died before the film was released. The credits in the film dedicated the film to Late Amir Ali.

Perhaps the best music was by Vasant Desai to film “Parbat pe apna dera“. Vanmala and Ulhas excel in acting in a story of sexual repression. All songs are excellent, especially Amirbai’s song ” Pareshan hoon main” is simply divine.

Lastly, the Best one. Record breaking musical “Rattan” gave superlative songs by Naushad. Barring 2 songs by Manju, the other 8 songs were all Hits. Rattan gave 200% returns on the film and song records, to the Producer.

Film Us Paar-1944 had the cast of well known artists of those times, like Chandra Mohan, Ishwar Lal, Swarnalata, Sulochana Chatterjee, Kanhaiyalal, Charlie and others. This was a very complicated love story involving 2 sets of lovers. The story somehow did not seem to impress the audience and the film had an ordinary run , barely making a little profit.

The director Chiman lal Luhar was one of the many Gujaratis in the Hindi film industry who had, by coincidence, names starting with ” Ch”. Some of the well known such names were Chimanlal Trivedi, Chimanlal Desai, Chimanlal Luhar, Chaturbhuj Doshi, Chimankant Desai, Chunibhai Desai and above all Chandulal Shah. Most of them were successful directors, producers and studio owners like Ranjit or Sagar Movietone etc. Even Chimanlal Luhar had his own banner Sun Art Pictures, which produced today’s film.

CHIMANLAL MULJIBHOY LUHAR ( 1901-1948) was a Chemistry graduate from Bombay University. He started writing as a critic and author in journals like Beesvin sadee, Navchetan and Bombay Chronicle.

He joined the film line as a lab Assistant in Kohinoor studios in his early 20s. Soon he became a noted cameraman for several documentaries, with K.D.Brothers, Bombay, under a British cameraman of Prince of Wales’ official entourage. After a brief stint at Rajkot with Saurashtra Films and a longer one at Krishna Films-where he shot 20 films, he joined Sharada Studios with ‘Dagabaz Duniya-1926 and several stunt films by Master Vithal. He turned a producer for a few stunt films.

Later he was a partner in Sharda films and a Director with Sagar Movietone(1934-1940). From 1941 to 46 he worked for Prakash Pictures. He directed Sassi Punnu-32,Silver King-35 Talash-E-haq (first film of Nargis, made by Jaddanbai)-35, Do deewane, Kharab Jaan, Capt. Kirtikumar, Dynamite, Kaun kisika, Sewa Samaj, Saubhagya, Darshan, Station master, School Master, Uss paar and Bindiya.

He died at the young age of 47 years,in 1948. He had established his own production outfit ‘Sun Art Pictures’ in 1943, but he made only 3 films with it -School Master-43, Uss Paar-44 and Bindiya-46, before he died, after a prolonged illness.

FILMOGRAPHY: 1932: Sassi Punnu; 1935: Silver King; Talash-e-Haq; 1936: Do Diwane/Be Kharab Jan; 1937: Captain Kirti Kumar; 1938: Dynamite; 1939: Kaun Kisika; Seva Samaj; 1940: Saubhagya; 1941: Darshan; 1942: Station Master; 1943: School Master; 1944: Us Paar; 1946: Bindiya.

Music Director Nizami was more successful in Pakistan than in India. Here only one out of his 9 films, “Jugnu“-1947 had songs which became popular. Feroze Nizami, was born in 1916, in Lahore, to an enlightened family, which was well versed in various aspects of music and musical instruments.

Feroze Nizami received in-depth music lessons from Ustaad Abdul Waheed Khan and soon mastered the music. Additionally, he graduated from Punjab University and began his working life from Lahore Radio station as a program producer. Due to some unavoidable reasons, he left Lahore and joined Delhi Radio station, where he stayed for fifteen months. Here,he had the company of Khwaja Khursheed Anwar, krishnachander and Saadat Hasan Manto. They used to exchange musical notes. All of them resigned at a time, over the issue of unethical promotion of a colleague. After this all others separated.

Next, Feroze Nizami migrated to Bombay and worked for the Bombay film industry as a music composer. He got his start in the 1943 film ‘Vishwas’. It was released under the banner of Wadia MovieTone. Another musician, by the name of ‘Chaila Lal’, also coordinated with Feroze Nizami to compose songs of ‘Vishwas.’ Director, Homi Wadia, songwriter, Safdar Ah, and Pandit Indira. Cast included Surendar and Himalaya Wala. With the passage of time, Feroze Nizami familiarized himself with classical, semi classical music and thumri. In 1944, Feroze Nizami composed songs for the film ‘Bari Baat’, directed by Mazhar Khan, who was also a famous actor and producer during those days.

Soon after which Feroze Nizami made his mark in the film ‘Umang’, in 1944, director K.M. Multani, songwriter, Ratan piya – Rasheed. As a result of his focused concentration, Feroze Nizami soon became a huge success in the entertaining world.

In the year 1944, Feroze Nizami also composed music for the film ‘Us Paar,’ directed by C.M. Lohar, songwriter, Pandit Madhur. His efforts took on new intensity and Feroze Nizami proved his worth in the music world.

In 1945, Feroze Nizami composed songs for the film ‘Piya Milan,’ directed by S.M. Yusuf and released under the banner of Wadia MovieTone. Songwriters, Tanvir Naqui – S.K. Deepak – Mohammad Naseem – Munshi Shayam. Nirmala and Moti Lal played the lead roles.

Listeners feel as if a wave of emotion rises up from their core as they listen to Feroze Nizami’s music. One feels nostalgic as one encompasses all those great memories about him. Feroze Nizami composed songs for the film ‘Sharbati Aankhein’, in 1945. It was released under the banner of Wadia MovieTone, songwriter, Tanvir Naqui – Pandit Indira, directed by R.C. Thakur.

Feroze Nizami was a natural artist who applied himself earnestly to his work, because he considered it his professional duty. He composed songs in the 1946 film ‘Amar Raj.’ It was released under the banner of Wadia MovieTone. Songwriter, Pandit Fani, director, Homi Wadia.

Feroze Nizami’s fellow musicians did seem to fall under the spell of his musical talents. In 1946, he enthusiastically accepted the offer to compose music for the film, ‘Nek Perveen.’ It was released under the banner of D.R.D. Productions. Songwriter, Waheed Qureshi, director, S.M.Yusuf. Raagni played the title role in the film.

Feroze Nizami also composed songs for the film ‘Ali Baba’ in 1946.

Feroze Nizami’s music was full of skillful touches. An accomplished music composer, his many contributions to the movie industry have embedded themselves in the Indo Pakistani psyche. In 1947, Feroze Nizami composed songs in the film ‘Pati Saiwa’, directed by S.M. Yusuf.

Feroze Nizami’s music skills had a resolution and an edge. Apparently, he still had an incredibly enormous loyal following. He composed songs for the film ‘Rangeen Kahani’, in 1947, directed by Anjum Husaini, songwriter, Waheed Qureshi.

His keenly articulate film music and surprisingly tender grasp of human nature remained consistent throughout his show business career. Feroze Nizami composed songs with plenty of zest for the 1947 super hit film ‘Jugnu’, director, Shaukat Husain Rizvi. It was released under the banner of Shaukat Art Productions. Songwriters, Adeeb Saharan puri – Nakhshab Jaar Choi – Faiz Ahmed Faiz – Hafeez. Dilip Kumar and Noor Jehan appeared together for the first and last time in ‘Jugnu’ in lead roles.

Spinning magic with music, Feroze Nizami won the hearts of music buffs with this tragic score, ‘Hamay to sham- e– gham mein katni hai zindagi apni.’ The film ‘Jugnu.’

Feroze Nizami’s music was at once poignant and admirable. It is a feeling he has passed on to millions of music lovers. Example, ‘Hum bhi bhula dain, tum bhi bhula do piya puranay guzray zamanay,’ the film ‘Jugnu.’

The transporting power of love and gentility were successfully captured by Feroze Nizami in ‘Khatam hoti hai yahan per do diloan ki dastaan,’ the film ‘Jugnu.’

Feroze Nizami’s highly effective composition is fraught with pain and pathos like a haunting melody, which flows and ripples from a flute. Example, ‘Yahan badla wafa ka bay wafai kay siwa kiya hai’, the film ‘Jugnu,’ duet, Rafi – Noor Jehan.

The powerful lyrics and brilliant music kept audiences and critics on their seats throughout the film. Example, ‘Aaj ki raat saaz-e-dil per dard na cheir,’ the film ‘Jugnu.’

Feroze Nizami migrated to Pakistan after partition. His first film in Pakistan was ‘Hamari Basti’, in 1949. He became the defining voice for quality music in films. His high expectations influenced more than just those who worked in the film industry. They profoundly affected the moviegoers. He composed songs for the 1951 Punjabi movie, ‘Chan way.’ It was released under the banner of Shah Noor productions.

Feroze Nizami’s music talent was so huge that it simply transcends one’s wildest conceptions. He also composed songs for the films ‘Manzil’, in 1960, ‘Mongol’ in 1961, and ‘Saukan’ in 1964. He used to sing on Radio Pakistan. He was appointed Chairman of the Music Department of Pakistan Arts Council also.

The 1974 Punjabi film ‘Zan, zer tay zameen’ proved to be the last film Feroze Nizami composed music for. Feroze Nizami passed away on November 15, 1975, in Lahore, at the age of 59.
