In my last article, I discussed the film, ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ (1969) which was written and produced by Devi Sharma (19/10/2021 – 30/03/2010). I got acquainted with his name when I had watched his films, ‘Ganga Ki Laharen’ (1964) and ‘Gunaahon Kaa Devta’ (1967)” in my younger days. Meerut born Devi Sharma was a writer and got attracted to the glamour world of Hindi films. He shifted to Mumbai and debuted as a co-producer with Wasti for ‘Basre Ki Hoor (1956). His first independent film as a producer and writer under his banner, Janta Chitra was ‘Taxi Stand’ (1958). The next as a producer-writer was ‘Kaali Topi Laal Roomaal’ (1959).

Devi Sharma debuted as a director in ‘Ganga Ki Laharen’ (1964) which he also produced. The surprising feature of the film was the casting of South’s star actress, Savitri with Dharmendra in lead roles when Kishore Kumar was paired with Kumkum in the film. In fact, because of the popularity of songs rendered by Kishore Kumar in the film, I was under the impression that Kishore Kumar was the lead actor paired with Kumkum. Another surprise in the film was that the credit titles of the film did not contain any name of the actors. Instead, a caption, ‘All Top Stars’ was listed.

As a producer-director-writer, Devi Sharma planned ‘Gunaahon Kaa Devta’ (1967), as a low budget black and white film with Jitendra and Kumkum in the lead roles. In an interview which appeared in The Times of India, November 1, 2002, Jitendra revealed that he roped in Rajshree and Shankar-Jaikishan and convinced Devi Sharma to make the film in colour. Jeetendra believes that though he achieved the stardom with ‘Farz’ (1967) which was released on December 1, 1967, his career as an actor really took off with the box office success of ‘Gunaahon Kaa Devta’ (1967) which was released on May 19, 1967.

Devi Sharma was instrumental in giving Dara Singh his first lead role in ‘King Kong’ (1962). He also introduced Vishal Anand (Dev Anand’s nephew) in his film, ‘Hamaara Adhikaar’ (1970).

Devi Sharma was associated with 11 films during 1956-74 of which music director, Chitragupt composed the music for as many as 9 films. ‘Gaal Gulaabi Nain Sharaabi’ (1974) was his last association with Hindi films which he produced and directed. Thereafter, there is no information as to what he did until he passed away on March 30, 2010.

‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ (1960) was Devi Sharma’s third film as a sole producer. The film was directed by Tara Harish. Apart from Chandrashekhar and Kumkum as the lead pair, the film had two supporting pairs in comedy roles – Agha with Helen and Sundar with Indira Bansal. I found roles of Agha-Helen pair interesting in this film. Contrary to the general trend in Hindi films, Agha was the love interest of Helen, and she was wooing him. Agha was avoiding her mainly because, though in a role of carpenter in the film, he imagined himself as potentially rich person and Helen was no match for him in terms of her financial status. She on the other hand would be pestering him to marry her because that was agreed upon by his mother.

The skirmishes between Agha and Helen go on throughout the film as a sub-plot. This has been aptly summarised by Majrooh Sultanpuri in the song, ‘khadee re khadee re kab se dekh raaja jaani’ which has been set to music by Chitragupt. This is the 8th and the final song from the film to appear on the Blog which is picturised on Helen and Agha.

With this song, all the songs of ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ (1960) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri have been covered on the Blog, details of which are as under:
