Blog Day :

6019 Post No. : 18749

Today’s song is from the film Namoona-1949.

The film was produced by C.R.Shah and R. Bhattacharya. It was directed by Hira Singh Baria. The film story was written by J.C.Jain and the dialogues were by M.L.Bajpai. There were 5 lyricists for 9 songs. Music Director was C.Ramchandra.

1949 was the beginning of Lata-C Ramchandra friendship which lasted perhaps till she sang for him in Bahurani-1963. From Girls school 49 to Bahurani-63, the Lata-C Ramchandra partnership gave us a feast of lovely, memorable and very melodious songs. Actually she separated from him in 1958 itself.

Lata sang 295 songs for C Ramchandra, out of which 196 were solos and 41 were duets with Chitalkar. Initially, Lata sang only in chorus or with other singers for C Ramchandra. It was only in Namoona-49 that she sang her FIRST solo with C Ramchandra -Mhaari gali ma aav jo. Just listen to Lata’s fresh, undiluted and pure voice and you will understand why Lata went to the TOP so fast.

In the journey to the Top, Lata needed many and later she ”used” many, but that is a different story altogether.

LATA MANGESHKAR was a Great Artist. I know I am not telling anything new and the whole world knows it. The more I read about Lata, the more I respect her. I strongly believe that Great people are for the public for their public reasons. What I mean is-Gandhi ji was great for his politics, Lata is great for her singing, Nehru was great for his foresight etc. What they are in private lives-good or bad things-does not lower their stature nor their greatness. It is Human to peep into the private lives of great people, but I feel it should not be allowed to overshadow their talents for which they are considered Great.

Lata Mangeshkar being a phenomena, so much has been written about her that one would think that nothing new will come out now. It is not true. Every time she gave an Interview or some new Biography came out, many hidden anecdotes and bits of new information emerged. Plus, other musicians of her times, from time to time, went on revealing unheard stories-from their angles.

Lata was born on 28-9-1929 to Master Deenanath and Shudhamati(Shevanta). She was the oldest amongst her siblings and due to the early demise of her father, had to start earning from the age of 5 year, by working in Marathi dramas.

Her original name was HEMA, but later it was changed to Lata, based on a character “Latika” in a Marathi drama-‘Bhavbandhan’. Their actual surname was HARDIKAR. So in effect she was HEMA HARDIKAR. However her father changed their surname to Mangeshkar to retain a link with their hometown MANGESHI in Goa.( on the site jointscene.com, she is always referred to and credited as Hema Hardikar only, even now).

Lata won several awards and honours from Government and social bodies, the major being- Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Bharat Ratna, besides hundreds of others.

Lata has sung about 5250 songs till 1991. She sang in 36 Languages, Indian and foreign. This is yet another record for her. Lata has sung for 165 Music Directors in 1825 films. There are 3341 solos, 1424 duets with Males, 244 duets with Females and 48 songs with multiple singers.

(All the above statistics are by Dr.Surjit Singh ji on RMIM.).

The cast of the film Namoona-1949 was Dev Anand, Kamini Kaushal, Kishore Sahu, Leela Chitnis and many others. The story of this film was a little odd and it took unexpected turns. The film had a modest success at the Box office. Let us take a look at the film’s story….

The main characters of the film are, Rekha (Kamini Kaushal) the granddaughter of Baba Dedas (Sanyal), Jeevan (Dev Anand) a refugee boy who studies in the same college as Rekha. Barrister Kedar (Kishore Sahu), Advocate General of the City – rich, highly educated, an achiever and influenced by his stay in western countries. Baba has decided to marry Rekha to kedar.

Jeevan and Rekha get introduced and slowly fall in love. One day her grandfather, Baba, gets entangled in a murder case. The case starts in court. One old looking woman – Shyama (Leela Chitnis) stands for giving evidence and in the course, she reveals that she was raped by a respectable and rich businessman, with whom she was doing the Maid work. She declares that Rekha is her daughter from that rape. There is a great commotion and all are stunned.

In Spite of all this, kedar is firm on marrying Rekha as planned by her grandfather. Kedar takes the witness Shyama to his house. There she she sees the photograph of Kedar’s father and recognises him as the one who is Rekha’s father by the rape committed on Shyama. This makes kedar and Rekha siblings. Now kedar wants to pay for father’s sins and helps Jeevan and Rekha to get married. He also keeps Shyama as his mother.

The film’s Heroine- Kamini Kaushal is one of the two actresses whose love affairs with famous heroes fizzled out. The other pair was Dev and Suraiya. Kamini Kaushal (Uma Kashyap) was the daughter of a very learned Botany Professor. She had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The eldest brother was a Surgeon and the younger was in the Army. The family was highly educated and sophisticated in Lahore. Because of Chetan Anand, she acted in Neecha Nagar-1946. Then she shifted to Bombay to look after her sister’s 2 daughters as sister had died in a serious car accident. Later she was married to her Brother in Law,Mr. B S Sood.

Starting with Jail yatra,Do Bhai,Aag,Shaheed,Nadiya ke paar etc, she acted in over 60 films in 40 years.

During the filming of Shaheed and Nadiya ke Paar-48, she fell in love with Dilip Kumar. They decided to get married too, but one day her brother,Col. A N Kashyap came on the sets and with a Pistol, threatened her to stop her affair with Dilip Kumar. Scared, she also remembered her promise to her dying sister and her 2 daughters. From that date, Kamini ended the affair permanently.

Later she took a break from films and went abroad with family. She also delivered a baby Boy, Rahul,in this break period. In 1963, she started with “Godaan” again but switched to character roles. Her last film was in 2007. She engaged herself in Children’s film society work after that. Presently, she is one of the oldest actresses in Hindi films to be alive.

Kishore Sahu, actually did not have the looks of a Hero, but he became one for a short time and then continued with character roles. Kishore Sahu was an actor, film director, screenWriter, and Producer by profession. Sahu was born on November 22, 1915 in Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh, India. He participated in the cinema after completing his education from 1937 to 1982. He married Snehprabha Pradhan, but when she came to know that he was already married, she divorced him. His film ‘Mayurpamkh’ entered into the ‘Cannes Film Festival’ in the year 1954. This film was also nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival. In this film, Kishore played the role of Ranjit Singh. He wrote Teen Bahuraniyan in 1968, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai in 1960, and story, Dialogue, and screenplay for Hare Kanch Ki Chooriyan in 1967. His daughter Naina Sahu acted as a child artiste in the film Hamari Duniya-52. Kishore Sahu tried to make her a heroine in the film Hare kaanch ki Choodiyan-1967, but she failed. Her second film was Pushpanjali, which too was a flop. Then she left films, got married and settled.
