‘Ham Deewaane’ (1964) was produced by Natubhai Shah under the banner of Young India Entertainers and was directed by Master Bhagwan. The cast included Chandrashekhar, Master Bhagwan, Mumtaz, Helen, Iftekhar, Agha, Rajan Haksar, Maruti, Kundan, Anwar, Kanchanmala etc. This film was one among many attempts by Master Bhagwan to revive his filmy career which was being reduced to acting in small roles. However, this film was also an attempt to revive the musical career of C Ramchandra who composed the songs for this film as Anna Saheb, the name he had often used when associated with the films produced/directed by Master Bhagwan.

The combination of Master Bhagwan as Producer/director and C Ramchandra as the music director worked in as many as 18 films from 1942 through 1966. The circumstances under which they met for the first time as revealed by C Ramchandra in his Marathi autobiography, माझ्या जीवनाची सरगम ‘ (1977) is interesting. C Ramchandra was assisting Mir Saheb in Minerva who had got an outside assignment as music director in a stunt film, ‘Bahadur Kisaan’ (1938) which Master Bhagwan was directing. Mir Saheb was rehearsing a song with Master Bhagwan who was to sing during the picturisation. Since Master Bhagwan was not a professional singer, he was committing mistakes which made Mir Saheb angry. At that time, Bhagwan came to C Ramchandra and suggested to him that he should take over the rehearsal from Mir Saheb so that he gets confidence to sing correctly. Fed-up with the rehearsing Master Bhagwan, Mir Saheb went out. After the rehearsal with C Ramchandra, the final take of the song and its picturisation turned out to be good. Since then, Master Bhagwan and C Ramchandra became friends.

Master Bhagwan was instrumental in C Ramchandra getting his first independent assignment as music director in two Tamil films, ‘Jayakodi’ (1940) and ‘Vana Mohini’ (1941), both directed by Master Bhagwan. Harishchandrarao Kadam was producing ‘Sukhi Jeewan (1942) which he wanted Master Bhagwan to direct. The music director for the film was to be Robin Chatterjee. Master Bhagwan put a condition to Harishchandrarao that he would direct the film provided he takes Anna (C Ramchandra) as the music director. So, ‘Sukhi Jeewan’ (1942) became C Ramchandra’s first Hindi film as a music director. In the decade of 1940s, C Ramchandra was the music director of as many as 12 films directed by Master Bhagwan. All these movies belonged the stunt/action/costume genre for which C Ramchandra used the names as Ram Chitalkar, Anna Saheb or some time P Ramakant who was his music assistant.

When C Ramchandra started working first with Jayant Desai and thereafter with Fimistan, he has started getting social films many of which became successful at the box office. He, therefore, suggested to Master Bhagwan that he should also produce a social film and he would use his usual name, C Ramchandra for his social film. Earlier, Raj Kapoor had also suggested him to switch over to social genre of films. But Master Bhagwan used to produce and direct low budget stunt/action films, and he was popular with this genre. To produce a social film, he required star actors which would require higher budget to produce the film. C Ramchandra assured him that he would compose melodious songs for the film which would remain popular for a long time and, he would not charge his fees for the film. Except one, he also sang all the songs as playback singer for Master Bhagwan in the film thus reducing the financial cost.

As a first step, Master Bhagwan wrote the story and the screenplay for ‘Albela’ (1951) which Geeta Bali liked it and agreed to work in the film. With Master Bhagwan himself directing and acting in the lead role, financially, things became somewhat easy. The film not only became a box office super success, but its song album itself earned C Ramchandra more money as loyalties than his normal fee as a music director.

After the tremendous success of ‘Albela’ (1951), unfortunately, the combination of Master Bhagwan as producer-director and C Ramchandra as the music director failed in their subsequent films at the box office. Master Bhagwan tried to encash the success of ‘Albela’ (1951) by producing films with similar sounding names like ‘Jhamela’ (1953), ‘Rangeela’ (1953) and ‘Labela’ (1966) but these films flopped at the box office. After Lata Mangeshkar refused to sing for C Ramchandra sometime from 1958 onwards and Master Bhagwan was reduced to doing some bit roles in the films, both were on the downward spiral of their filmy career. Their combination ended with ‘Labela’ (1966).

I could not find the VCD/DVD of the film, ‘Ham Deewaane’ (1964) on any video sharing platform. The reason could be that the film may have been badly damaged if I go by watching a 5-minute clip of the film available on a video sharing platform. I could not properly read even the credit title of the film. Fortunately, the videos of original soundtrack of film’s songs are available albeit in average quality. So, instead of giving the film’s story in detail, I reproduce below the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh in one of his comments on the Blog:

Fed up with the tyrannical Zamindar in the village, Shyam(Chandrasekhar) and Bhola(Bhagwan) come to Bombay for work. They get entangled in the evil Mary’s gold smuggling gang but manage to get the gang arrested by Police. Next, they meet Seth Mohanlal (Iftikhar) and his daughter Asha (Mumtaz) who promptly falls in love with Shyam. Madan(Anwar),the partner of Mohanlal is a crook and kidnaps Mohanlal, Shyam and Asha, to achieve his goal of usurping the property of Mohanlal. Bhola, with help from his friends works hard to expose and arrest Madan and Co thus rescuing Shyam, Asha and Mohanlal from a death trap.

The film had eight songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Anna Saheb (C Ramchandra). Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ’o jaan-e-man jaan-e-jaan jaa rahe ho kahaan’ rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Helen and she wants to dance with Chandrashekhar who obliges her. Master Bhagwan also join them in dance for sometime.

The video of the song jumps at few places, disturbing the synchronisation of the lip sync of Helen with the soundtrack.
