Today’s song is from a Mythological film ‘Subhadra’-1946.

The genre of Mythological films was one of the most favourite one of the filmmakers from the day filmmaking started in India. If you remember, even the first ever silent film made by Dadasaheb Phalke- Raja harishchandra-1913 – was based on King Harishchandra’s story from the Vishnu Puran. This was because the Indian culture was such that irrespective of the caste and creed, everyone liked to see these stories which they heard from several generations. In those years, the Hindu population of India was 85 % ( as per 1921 Census). Steadily, these types of films became less and less and by 1990 onwards, as far as I know, there were no Mythological films worth mentioning.

Due to its viability and ability to generate heavy profits (compared to investments), Mythological films were produced on popular and favourite stories. Contrary to popular beliefs, more films were made on stories from Mahabharat characters and Puranas than that of Ramayana. In this way, some stories got repeated, like the one on the Arjun-Subhadra Love story. Talkie films titled “Subhadra Haran” were made in 1932, 1964 and 1974. Today’s film Subhadra-1946 is also based on the same story with a different title.

Film Subhadra-1946 was made by Master Vinayak for his own banner Prafulla pictures, Bombay. It was also directed by him. Music was composed by Vasant Desai. It was in this film that Lata Mangeshkar, as a teen, had done a small role of Subhadra’s friend, Sona. She had also sung a duet with Shanta Apte- her first and the only one with Shanta Apte. The cast of the film was Shanta Apte as Subhadra, Ishwarlal as Arjun, Prem Adib as Shri Krishna, Dada Salvi as Balram,Yakub as Duryodhan, Meenakshi Shirodkar as Rukmini, Usha Mantri as Revati, V.S.Jog as Narad and Damuanna, Nimbalkar, Muzumdar Shantarin and many others.

The story and dialogues were by the Sahitya Academy winner Marathi writer V.S.Khandekar and Lyricists were Pt. Indra, Pt. Sudarshan and Moti B.A. (His real name was Motilal Sancheti. He had done his M.A., but chose to write only B.A. after his name ). The story of the film Subhadra-1946 was ….

The story takes place just before the Mahabharat war between Pandavas and Kauravas. King Balram feels that he should try to unite all kings of India to avoid the impending war. He holds a meeting and all kings are invited. In that meeting Duryodhan cunningly suggests that one way was to lay down arms by every king. Pandavas understand his evil plan and oppose it. Arjun gives a very convincing speech about how it is not the right way. Listening to his fiery speech, Subhadra, sister of Balram and Shri Krishna is impressed and she loses her heart to Arjun.

After the meeting, Duryodhan asks Balram for the hand of his sister Subhadra, in marriage to him. Balram is pleased and promises him the marriage. Listening to this Subhadra is displeased. However, Shri Krishna pacifies her by promising that she will get what she desires. On the day of their marriage, Krishna calla Bheem’s son- Ghatotkach and tells him something. Just before the marriage, Ghatotkach becomes invisible and carries away Subhadra from the palace. The marriage muhurta is over but Subhadra is not to be found anywhere. Balram suspects Krishna’s hand in it, but he denies and feigns ignorance.

Meanwhile, on return to Indraprastha, one day Arjun , by mistake, enters a room where Yudhishthir and Draupadi are in privacy. As per rule now Arjun has to proceed on a long pilgrimage for 3 months away from Indraprastha. He becomes a Yati and goes to Dwarka. He lives near the city in an Ashram. Balram comes to know about Sadhu and takes Subhadra to Arjun. He does not recognise Arjuna, but Subhadra immediately recognises him. Thus their meetings start. On completion of his period, Arjun dons his original attire, calls Subhadra and they start for Indraprastha in his chariot. Balram is furious, but Krishna convinces the simple Balram how Arjun is better. Meanwhile Arjun and Subhadra get married and Balram and Shri Krishna bless them.

The film became a Hit for two reasons. One due to the story and two for its songs. This was the second exclusive Hindi film made by Master Vinayak. The other Hindi film he had made was Badi Maa-1945 (actually it was made as a war propaganda film as per Government’s regulation.). Incidentally it is worthwhile knowing that in spite of being a Marathi actress, Shanta Apte never worked in any Marathi film. Likewise P.Jairaj, who was a Telugu by Birth, never worked in any Telugu film in his career.

The actor who did the role of Balram in this film was Dada Salvi. he had acted in many Hindi films, including India’s first Talkie film, ” Aalam Ara”-1931. He was a very popular actor in Marathi films in his later life, i.e. after 1947.

Dinkar Shivram Salvi (04 December 1904 – 29 October 1980) better known as screen name “Dada Salvi”, was an actor of the silent & talkie era of Indian Cinema. He was a part of the first Indian talkie film “Alam Ara” (1931). He has acted in 20 silent movies. He has worked in Hindi & Marathi movies.

Dinkar Shivram Salvi aka Dada Salvi was born on 04 December 1904 in a village Phansob in Ratnagiri, Bombay Presidency undivided India, now in Maharashtra. After completing his education, he joined the Police Department. During service period, he was taking part in plays. Shri Tipnis, a well known play master saw Salvi and advised to come to Bombay. Acting in plays became a part of his life, so he decided to leave the job and came to Bombay.

In Bombay, Tipnis introduced Salvi to K. B. Athawale, working as manager, actor, director in Excelsior Film Company owned by Seth Wazeer Aziz. The company was searching for talented actors and Athwale offered Salvi to join Excelsior Film Company on a monthly salary of ₹. 25. Salvi accepted the job & joined Excelsior Film Company.

Salvi’s first silent film was “Khoon-e-Nahaq” (1928) and became very popular. Looking to his potential in acting, The Imperial Film Company offered Dalvi work with higher monthly pay. After joining Imperial Film Company, Salvi acted in 20 silent films like Madanmanjri, Indira BA, Bhola Shikar, Cinema Girl, Hamara Hindustan, Raat Ki Baat, Khuda Ki Shan and many more. It is said, while working with Imperial Film Company, Salvi fell in love with his co-actress Sakhubai & later they married. Probably it was the first love Marriage of the first Maharashtrian acting couple of Hindi Films.

Salvi had worked with Jayant Desai in the film Fauladi Pahelwan – Iron Man (1931) for Paramount Films. He also acted in Marathi films like Aut Ghatkecha Raja, Bhakta Prahlad, Chatrapati Sambhaji, Thaksen Rajputra under Dadasaheb Torne of Saraswati Cinetone. Salvi’s role in “Chatrapati Sambhaji ” as Sambhaji’s evil advisor ‘Kalusha Kabji’ won him great acclaim. Impressed with the acting of Salvi as “Kalusha Kabji”, Huns Pictures, Kolhapur, invited him to join them on a three figure salary. Salvi left Imperial and joined Huns.

“Premveer” (1937) was Salvi’s first film with Huns Pictures. This was a turning point in his career where he came to be associated with Master Vinayak & Marathi Films. Their team led to many wonderful performances. He was then seen mostly in Marathi Films with an occasional Hindi film. In Brahmchari, Salvi played the role of a father of the heroine. Salvi acted in Marathi films like Savangadi, Brandi Chi Batli, Devta and many more.

Later Huns Pictures changed to Navyug Chitrapat and made Amrut (1941). Salvi then worked in many Hindi and Marathi films with Master Vinayak, V. Shantaram. After 1947, Dada Salvi mainly worked in Marathi films.

Dada Salvi died on 29 October 1980 in Poona (Pune), Maharashtra.

Let us now enjoy the 79 year old song by Shanta Apte….
