‘Bhai Bahan’ (1969) was produced by B S Ranga under the banner of Vikram Productions and was directed by A Bhim Singh. The star cast included Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Padmini, Pran, Sulochana Latkar, Helen, Sikandar, Mukri, Bhalla etc. The film belongs to the genre of family drama.

A Bhim Singh was one of the top producers-directors of Tamil films and had a high strike rate of hit films. He was known for making social films with family issues, especially the inter-personal problems within the family. He had also directed 18 films in Hindi. His films mostly dealt with as to how an autocratic father/husband, a dominant wife/sister-in-law, a vagabond son, a mischievous aunt etc can destroy the peace in the family. But despite all hiccups in the family, his films end with a positive note.

‘Bhai Bahan’ (1969) is the story of a wealthy family with an autocratic husband, a submissive wife and their two sons. The elder son dies out of the anger of his father which makes the younger son to leave the house. He gets acquainted with a character who introduces him to vices –cigarette, alcohol, women. Remorseful due to the death of elder son, the father does not want to behave in the same way with his younger son despite knowing that he has got a bad company. Added to his misery is that he has a rendezvous during his younger days that he had kept hidden from the family. But an ordinary girl with whom the younger son falls in love, brings the second son back on the track who successfully tackles his father’s secret with a happy ending. The story in detail is as under:

Wealthy Raja Vikram Pratap (Ashok Kumar) stays with his wife, Yashoda (Sulochana Latkar) and their two sons, the rebellious Mahendra(Sikandar) and the docile Surendra (Sunil Dutt). Raja Vikram Pratap is an autocratic in nature and runs his house in a disciplined manner. His wife and two sons are afraid of his anger. The enforcement of his discipline is tasted by the guests including Ratan (Pran) at a party hosted by him for celebrating a birthday party where he announces the end of the party sharp at 6.00 p.m.

One day when Raja Vikram Pratap is out of town, Mahendra is watching a street dance by Rani (Padmini). Being fond of music and dance, Mahendra joins and dances with her. Raja Vikram Pratap while driving back home, sees Mahendra dancing. At home, Raja Vikram Pratap badly admonishes Mahendra who, out of shock from his father’s anger, dies of heart-attack.

The death of Mahendra makes Surendra upset and decides not to stay in the house. He travels in a train to Mumbai during which he meets Ratan (Pran) who is aware of Surendra being the son of Raja Vikram Pratap. With his comforting talks and providing for his stay, Surendra agrees to work with Ratan who slowly makes him addicted to vices. One day, while traveling in his car, Ratan sees Helen walking on the road. He tells Surendra to watch how he wins over her. She travels in their car where Ratan introduces her to Surendra. In reality, she is one of the associates of Ratan in his swindling business.

Having made Surendra sub-servient to him through his addictions to drinking, Ratan visits Raja Vikram Pratap’s house to inform him that his son, Surendra has gone out of control due to drinking and he is taking care of him. Raja Vikram Pratap gives Ratan some money to take care of him. His wife, Yashoda is surprised with her husband’s behaviour but she keep quite. At this juncture, Raja Vikram Pratap says that he does not want to interfere in Surendra’s life, having paid the price of losing his elder son.

The life for Surendra goes on with Ratan. One day, he sees Mala (Ratan) walking on the road. He tries to flirt with her by Ratan’s tactics of wining a girl. But instead of winning, Mala slaps Surendra for his behaviour. But Surendra continues to follow her in various guises. When he poses himself as a blind temple priest who regains his eyesight, Mala falls in love with him. They have agreed to meet in a garden.

One day, Mala on her way to meet Surendra, hears the conversation between Ratan and him which indicates that his love for her is merely a ploy to grab a woman. Nevertheless, Mala meets Surendra in a garden where he gives her a diamond necklace. Instead of accepting it, she gives him a shock by telling that she is not interested in him.

Raja Vikram Pratap has been spending restless nights, some time getting hallucinations of a woman walking in his house. That leads him to see a photograph of himself as a young man with a woman who resembles Rani. During the next bout of hallucination, Raja Vikram Pratap follows that woman which leads him to Rani’s house. He sees a photo-frame of that woman in her house and calls her Tara. Before things goes out of hand, Raja Vikram Singh is taken back to his house by his maid servant.

In Mumbai, Surendra after getting a rebuff from Mala, is awakened by how his life of an obedient son has turned into a stupid person after he got associated with Ratan. His doubt about Ratan is reinforced when Diwanji of his father is waiting for him to handover some money which Ratan has demanded from Raja Vikram Pratap for taking care of Surendra. Now, Surendra gets to know the real intention of Ratan befriending him. Surendra discards Ratan.

With Raja Vikram Pratap getting nightmares, he falls ill. Surendra decides to make a visit to his father. Before that he meets Mala and convinces her that he love for her is genuine and he is going back to his father. Buoyed by Mala’s acceptance of his love, Surendra is back home taking care of his father who recovers from his illness. With both father and son reconciled, Surendra reveals that he is in love with Mala. Raja Vikram Pratap gets an opportunity to share his secret to Surendra. He says that he was also in love with Tara which has been giving him nightmares for years. He has a daughter (Rani), with her. Presently, she is living in a hutment and she is a street dancer for a living. He had to agreed to marry Yashoda as per the family wishes. Now he wants to correct himself for which he pleads Surendra to help him out, without revealing this secret to anyone including his wife, Yashoda.

As an obedient son, Surendra visits Rani’s house and finds Ratan trying to molest her. After over-powering Ratan, Surendra tries to convince Rani to move away from her house and shift to a new house which he will buy for her. When she asked as to why so much generosity for her, Surendra replies that she is like a sister to him. She insists that in that case, the right place for a sister to stay is with his family and she would shift only to his house. Surendra reluctantly agrees which put Raja Vikram Pratap in an awkward situation while Yashoda does not understand as to why his son is giving shelter to a slum girl. After few days, Raja Vikram Pratap passes away due to his illness.

While staying in Raja Vikram Pratap’s mansion, Padmini soon comes to know through the photograph of her mother with Raja Vikram Pratap about her parentage and the reason why Surendra has given shelter in their house. Rani remembers that she had promised her dying mother that she would give her the honour of a respectable family. So, Rani wants now Surendra to reveal to the society his true relation with the family. But Surendra is bound by the promise he has given to his father that he would not reveal his secret and at the same time, he would take care of Rani.

It is only when Rani indulges in a drama that she is getting married to Ratan which make Surendra to reveal the secret in front of everyone that Rani is his stepsister. Yashoda accepts Rani as her daughter and announces that she is entitled to the same right to the assets of the late Raja Vikram Pratap as is Surendra.

‘Bhai Bahan’ (1969) had seven songs written by S H Bihari (3), Hasrat Jaipuri (2), Rajendra Krishan (1) and Narendra Sharma (1) which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Four songs from the film have been covered on the Blog. I present 5th song, ‘ae dil karoon main kyaa’, rendered by Sharda on the words of Hasrat Jaipuri. The song is picturised on Helen while Sunil Dutt and Pran are present.

The context of the song is that Sunil Dutt has become a friend of Pran after he has left the house to be away from his autocratic father, Ashok Kumar. Pran, after knowing that Sunil Dutt belongs to a royal family, decide to use him a tool to extract money from Ashok Kumar. In Pran’s company, Sunil Dutt gets addicted to smoking, drinking and the girls. Helen is one of the girls he gets introduced by Pran. He even boasts that for him, he can arrange Helen to join a party which he manages because she, in reality is the associate of Pran’s swindling business.

jhoomaa kare ye zindagee
gaate rahen raat bhar

donon jahaan
teree kasam
tu jo kahe haar doon
jo naa milaa tujhko kaheen
aisaa main sansaar doon
aisaa main sansaar doon
ae dil

saamnaa teraa huaa

duniyaa se kyaa
lenaa mujhe
tu jo mere saathh hai
jisko zubaan keh naa sakee
aankhon mein wo baat hai
aankhon mein wo baat hai
ae dil
