Hullo Atuldom

Wishing all Indians a Very Happy Republic Day.

(Cannot recall people greeting each other in this manner in the pre-WhatsApp days, though. 🤔)

Its India’s 76th Republic Day and as I can see we have had some patriotic songs posted on the blog over the last few days thanks to Avinashji remembering the efforts of Azad Hind Sena, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and all the patriots of the freedom struggle that culminated in India’s Independence in 1947.

India adopted its own Constitution in the year 1950, and 26th January was the date chosen for this because the Indian National Congress had proclaimed “Purna Swaraj” (complete independence) on that date in 1930. I don’t know how many of the current generation of Indians are aware of this. Infact, I don’t know if this fact is highlighted in the history books of the current curriculum.

Another thing that I would like to find out is how the day is celebrated in schools in the current era. I distinctly remember that in my school days, I used to look forward to these National Days – mind it 26th January alongwith 15th August & 30th January are days of National importance & they should be treated as such and not HOLIDAYS. I have seen many people, in the present times waiting to see if these dates fall around Saturday/ Sundays so that they can make plans of going out on long weekend trips with family & friends/relatives- I cannot fault them as possibly that way they get to spend quality & quantity times with their near-n-dear in this hectic, work loaded age. But that can be part of another post or line of thinking.

Continuing the Post after the celebrations this morning
————————————————————
This morning I saw the event that was telecast live from New Delhi’s “Kartavya Path” that was called “Rajpath” till a few years back. This is a ceremonial boulevard that runs from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Hill through Vijay Chowk and India Gate, National War Memorial to National Stadium, Delhi. The avenue is lined on both sides by huge lawns, canals and rows of trees. Considered to be one of the most important roads in India, it is where the annual Republic Day parade takes place. The event is hosted by the President of India with ceremonious parades and cultural events, tableaus showing the achievements of the various States & Union Territories that form India.

The Delhi Republic Day parade is held and organized by the Ministry of Defence. The President who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute from various marching units of the army, navy, air force, para-military and police forces.

Every year, a head of state or government of another country is invited as the state guest of honor for the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. The guest country is often chosen on the basis of strategic, economic and political interests. French President Emmanuel Macron was the chief guest at the celebrations that marked India’s 75th Republic Day. This year, Indonesian President Prawobo Subianto is the chief guest of the Republic day. The Parade had a contingent from the Indonesian forces at the start of events. I would like to mention that in 1950, for the first-ever Republic Day celebrations, India played host to the President Of Indonesia Sukarno.

The parade starts with the National Anthem after the President of India & the Honored Guest reach the Saluting Base; with the President’s Bodyguards mounted on decorated horses & the whole gathering standing on attention & saluting the flag. Similarly, after the breathtaking Fly-past by the planes of the Indian Air Force, the President’s Bodyguards come back on to the Kartavya Path, we have the National Anthem after which the President & the. Chief Guest are escorted back followed by the dignitaries leaving one after the other following protocols.

A long time back, in the year 1957 to be exact, Sahir Ludhianvi had lamented jinhe naaz hai hind par wo kahaan hain in Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa”. It was a lament on the conditions that the ladies in the ‘bazaar’ or ‘badnaam galiyaan’ and how “Yashoda ki ham-jins, Radha ki beti Payambar ki ummat, Jule Khan ki beti” are looking for help to come out of their situation. Recently, when I was going through the work of Subhash Ghai, I came across a film called “Kaanchi: The Unbreakable” that he had produced & directed in 2014. (I didn’t know of its existence). On reading the synopsis I found the story to be that “of a young woman who represents the million suppressed youth against injustice in the country.”

Mishti Chakravarty (no relation to Mithun Chakravarty) played the title role. Kaanchi, a small-town girl, who fights injustice happening around is in love with her childhood friend Binda (Kartik Aryan). The Kakda brothers (played by Rishi Kapoor & Mithun Chakravarty) want to capture the village land & turn it into an industrial hub which is opposed by Kaanchi & Binda. Additionally, the son of one of the Kakda brothers falls in love with Kaanchi & wants to marry her. She rejects him & in frustration he kills Binda. Kaanchi then travels to Mumbai, starts working in the Kakda household to complete her revenge against that family.

“Kaanchi: The Unbreakable” had music by Ismail Darbar & the Merchant Brothers Salim-Sulaiman. The songs were written by Irshad Kamil & Subhash Ghai (one song). Sukhwinder Singh, Anweshaa, Sonu Nigam, Mika Singh, Aishwarya Majumdar, Earl Edgar D’Souza, Neeti Mohan, Sanchita Bhattacharya, Aman Trikha, Suzanne D’Mello, Ankit Tiwari, Mohit Chauhan, Raj Pandit & Avril Quadros (so many, and most of them new names to me atleast) were the playback singers used for the 9 songs.

As I have mentioned above, Mishti & Kartik Aryan played the protagonists with Rishi Kapoor & Mithun Chkravarty heading the list of actors playing supporting characters. The filmalso had Mahima Chaudhry in a special appearance.

Today’s song in the voices of Sukhwinder Singh, Mohit Chauhan & Raj Pandit, with Salim Sulaiman as the music directors & Irshad Kamil as lyricist is in search of the Hindustan that is ‘Saare Jahan se Achcha’.
Feel Like ending the post with a Jai Hind!!!
