Greetings on the occasion of Maha Shivratri which is being celebrated today (26 February 2025).
In Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, there is a small village called Khidrapur located close to Karnataka border. The village has an ancient Shiva temple known as Kopeshwar temple at the shore of River Krishna. I had visited Kopeshwar temple in October 2014 which is about 40 kms south of Sangli. There were no other visitors as this temple is not well-known. The temple priest told me that during Maha Shivratri and Navaratri, devotees from adjoining villages and the neighbouring districts visit the temple in large numbers.
At first, I thought that this temple could be one among many Shiva temples located around the southern part of Maharashtra having a sizeable population of Lingayats who worship Lord Shiva. But I was for a pleasant surprise. This temple was a hidden gem of an architectural marvel blended with superb carvings and sculptures. I have a keen interest in temple architecture and stone carvings and this temple fitted well with my interest. It has intricate stone carvings of deities, elephant statues, and other secular sculptures all over the place.
The temple is said to have been constructed sometime during 7th century CE under the reign of Chalukya kings. Due to frequent skirmishes between Chalukyas and the neighbouring kings, the temple was abandoned. It was renovated during the reigns of Silhara kings Gandaraditya, Vijyaditya and Bhoj between 11th and 12th century CE. The work of renovations continued during the succeeding dynasty of Devgiri Yadavas. The temple architecture closely resembles that of temples of Belur and Halebeedu in Karnataka which I had visited on a couple of occasions. During the Deccan campaign of Mughal King Aurangzeb and other Sultans, much of the sculptures at the lower parts of Kopeshwar temple were damaged. One can note that none of the sculptures of elephants has trunks. Fortunately, most of the sculptures on the higher levels of outer walls of the temple are, more or less, intact.
I have visited many Shiva temples, but Kopeshwar is an unique Shiva temple. First, this may probably be the only Shiva temple where the devotees get to see first Lord Vishnu in lingam form before one can have darshan of Shivling of Kopeshwar, facing the north direction. And both are worshiped in the same sanctum sanctorum. Elsewhere in the temple complex is the deity of Parvati and Lord Ganesh. Second, it is a convention in all Shiva temples to first take the darshan of Nandi. But this Shiva temple does not have a Nandi. Lastly, the temple has a Swarga Mandap with a circular part of the ceiling open to the sky. Swarga Mandap is an ante room before one enters the Sabha Mandap and the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
I have given some details of Kopeshwar temple in this article because I propose to cover a song, ‘Shiv bhola bhandari’ from a Marathi film, ‘Katyaar Kaljaat Ghuslee’ (2015) which was entirely picturised in the Kopeshwar temple complex and is apt on the occasion of Maha Shivratri. The song is rendered by Arijit Singh, Shivam Mahadevan (son of Shankar Mahadevan) and Chorus on the words of Mangesh Kangane. The song is set to music by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy. The song is picturised on Subodh Bhave. Shankar Mahadevan and Mrunmayi Deshpande among others are also seen in the picturisation.
I had already outlined the story of the film while covering one of its songs, dil kee tapish aaj hai aaftaab. The background to the song under discussion is that after Pandit Bhanushankar Shastri (Shankar Mahadevan) has lost the singing competition against Khansaheb Aaftaab Hussain Bareliwale (Sachin Pilgaonkar), having lost his voice, leaves the village to an unknown place. Uma (Mrunmayi Deshpande), his daughter and Sadashiv (Subodh Bhave), his disciple are searching for Shastri but are unsuccessful. Uma tells Sadashiv that on Mahashivratri day, her father will not miss visiting the Shiva temple. Hence both of them visit the temple and find Shastri in disguise, holding the aarati but his hand is trembling. In the nick of the time, Sadashiv holds his hand with aarati and sings the Shiva aarati song.
Director, Subodh Bhave has brilliantly picturised the song, capturing the poignant moments of Shastri of his inability to sing the aarati song because he has lost his singing voice. Shankar Mahadevan’s display of his emotional upheaval when his hand trembles and the recognition of Sadashiv as his disciple, mainly through his eyes are superb.
The Audio clip contains the full song sung by Arijit Singh and Chorus while Video clip is somewhat shorter version rendered by Arijit Singh, Shivam Mahadevan (singing for Sadashiv as a boy in a flashback scene) and Chorus. While the lyrics in both the versions are the same, the orders in which stanzas are rendered are different. Hence I have given the lyrics for both the versions.
