Today (14 March 2025) is Holi, the festival of colours.
The legend of Holi is known to all Indians. The name of the festival Holi is derived from the name of Holika, the asuri who tried to help her brother Hiranyakashyap in his bid to kill his Vishnu Bhakt son Prahlad who would refuse to acknowledge his father as the supreme God.
If we dig deeper, we realise that Holika was born into a very powerful Asur family. She had two brothers, Hirankashyap and Hiranyaksh. They were so powerful that killing them was beyond the abilities of mortals and even strong Devatas. Vishnu had to take two separate avatars to kill the two brothers. Hiranyakashyap was killed by Narsimha avtar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu had to take Varah Avtar to kill the other brother Hiranyaksh.
That was in Satyug. The two brothers were born as powerful Rakshas Ravan and Kumbhkaran in Treta Yug. No one else but Ram, another avatar of Vishnu, is able to kill Ravan and Kumbhkaran.
In Dwapar yug, they were born not as Asur or Rakshas but as humans. This time they were not brothers but cousins named Shishupal and Dantvakr. Both of them were killed by the Dwapar yug avatar of Lord Vishnu viz Lord Krishn.
What about Holika herself. Did she take any reincarnations in Treta and Drawapar Yug ? I could nt find any such mention anywhere. Even in that one life she did so much that Humankind continue to clebrate the Holi festival even in Kaliyug. 🙂
By the way Holika had two sons. Guess who ? Rahu and Ketu. Holika’s siblings could be killed by Lord Vishnu in his various avatars, but Rahu and Ketu could not be killed even by Lord Vishnu. Holika had a very powerful lineage, as I have already mentioned. 🙂
Today 13 march 2025 is the 17th Holi for this blog. All well known Holi songs have already been covered in the blog. But we still have lots and lots of great Holi festival songs yet to be covered.
Here is a fantastic Holi festival song which I discovered only just now. It is from “Zid”(1976). This movie, whose existence I was not even aware of when it was released, was produced by R C Kumar and ditected by Vijay. The movie had Sachin, Sarika, Nutan, Rajendra Nath, Maruti, Om Shiv Puri, Anwar, Tun Tun, A K Hangal etc in it.
Here is this Holi song which is as good a Holi song as any that have been created in Hindi movies. It is sung by Jaspal Singh, Asha Bhonsle, male and female chorus. The song is picturised very well on Sachin Sarika and others. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist and well as music director.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous and safe Holi.
Song-Rang leke deewaane aa gaye (Zid)(1976) Jaspal Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Ravindra Jain, MD-Ravindra Jain
Male chorus
Female chorus
Lyrics
Rang leke deewaane aa gaye
Rang leke deewaane aa gaye
rangon mein pyaar bhar ke dildaar
laaye hain hum to
hoy hoy
dil dil se milaane aa gaye
dil dil se milaane aa gaye
phir humko sataane aa gaye
phir humko sataane aa gaye
ho humse milne ka
jab na koi bahaanaa milaa
to hoy hoy hoy
holee ke bahaane aa gaye
jee holee ke bahaane aa gaye
kya goraa kyaa saanwraa
har mukhda gulaabee laagey
ho har mukhda gulaabee laagey
ho o o
har koi deekhe baawraa
har koi sharaabee laage
ho har koi sharaabee laage
hahaha
rang mein bhang na daalo goree
karne do manmaanee
sachcha koi rang to phenko
mat barsaao paanee
paanee sabko pilaane aa gaye
paanee sabko pilaane aa gaye
ho humse milne ka
jab na koi bahaanaa milaa
to hoy hoy hoy
holi ke bahaane aa gaye
jee holi ke bahaane aa gaye
apne raste hum chale
maujon kee rawaanee le ke
ho maujon kee rawaanee le ke
ho o o
thhehre thhehro
aa gaye
hum apnee jawaanee le ke
lo hum apnee jawaanee le ke
aisee baandhhen preet kee doree
bandhh ke jo na tootey
sachchaa saathhee mil jaaye to
saathh kabhee na chhootey
saathh hum to nibhaane aa gaye
saathh hum to nibhaane aa gaye
rangon mein pyaar bhar ke dildaar
laaye hain hum to
humse milne ka
jab na koi bahaanaa milaa
to hoy hoy re
holee ke bahaane aa gaye
jee holee ke bahaane aa gaye

Nice Post Atul ji, and Happy Holi to all !!!
Thanks for the story of Holika and her brothers and their re-birth in different era. I was not aware of these details.
Listening and watching this song is a pleasure. And I watched it twice. I liked the picturization of the song and the performance of all involved there. The whole composition is nice and evokes nostalgia. I have not watched this movie yet.
While presenting the first song from this movie i had mentioned the following about this ‘Holi’ song from this movie -“Recently I came across one such movie which I am not much aware of and I think I never got to listen to its songs. But, after listening to its songs I find the ‘Holi’ song a familiar one and I was also surprised that it has not been posted on the blog so far. (however I guess it must have been sent by our other team members?)
Thanks for a song from one of my favorite singers Jaspal Singh and Composer Ravindra Jain and a song from the Seventies.
Regards,
Avinash
