Today’s song is from an obscure, forgotten film ‘ Golkunda ka Qaidi-1954.
When this film was released in Hyderabad, I was still in High school. In those days, in Hyderabad state, in addition to the routine subjects in the school, for the 10th standard, there used to be a novel subject called ” Non-Detail “. There used to be a world famous novel, drama, travelogue or a Biography taught in this subject. The purpose was to acquaint the students with the top class literature of the world and cultivate the habit of reading extra-curricular famous books. I don’t think that this was practiced in any other state of India. This truly helped the students to inculcate interest in reading books other than their curriculum.
For us, the ” Non- Detail” novel was “Prisoner of Zenda” by Anthony Hope. The book was very interesting and I read it completely as soon as I got it along with other books, though it was not from the main subjects. When the film ‘ Golkunda ka Qaidi”-1954 came to Hyderabad, its posters in Hindi and English were displayed at many places. The English posters were for ” Prisoner of Golkunda “. We all sincerely presumed that it was the Hindi version of ” Prisoner of Zenda”-1952, the Hollywood movie starring Stewart Granger and Deborah Karr. Along with my few classmates a group went to see the film enthusiastically.
When we saw the film, we were all totally disappointed, as this film was entirely different, practically nothing to do with the English film. We felt cheated. Golkonda is a fort on the outskirts of hyderabad. The hindi film was not shot there, nor was it shown in the film. Not only we students, but even the audience of the film was extremely displeased with the Hindi film. We all felt like being misled by the film title.
Similarly, after about 2 years another film ” CharMinar”-1956 came to Hyderabad. Char Minar is a famous and popular structure in Hyderabad. It is an object of pride for people here. The enthusiastic audience which went to see the film was completely disappointed as it had nothing to do with Hyderabad or Char Minar. It was the name of a Sarai in Madina, in that film. people started calling the Bombay filmwallas as ‘Cheaters’. I know, the intention must not be to fool people, but it sure was a ” Same Name confusion ‘ in film titles !
Film ‘ Golkunda ka qaidi’-1954 was made by P.N.Films, a banner floated and owned by Premnath and his wife Bina Rai. The film had some Milestones. This was the First film of Lyricist Anjaan aka Lal ji Pandey. It was the debut film of comedian Rajendranath – premnath’s brother. This was the First film in which Premnath sang a few starting lines in a film song (This is today’s song). In all, he sang 5 songs in 5 films.
The film was produced and directed by Premnath (Malhotra) himself. The cast consisted of premnath, Bina Rai, Agha, Shobhana Samarth, heeralal, Indumati, Rajendranath, Cuckoo, Rajen kapoor and many others. Rather than a Historical film, it was more like a B grade Costume film having Raja, Rani, and vazir. The reviews that appeared in the media were not very complimentary. The Music Director was Datta Davjekar. Though the HFGK gives 3 names as MDs, a footnote says all songs were composed by Datta Davjekar only. The others were his assistants.
There were many Datta’s in Hindi films at that time, like K.Datta, N.Datta, Narayan Datta, Datta Thakur, Dattaram and Datta davjekar. However, Datta davjekar’s name is etched in the history of Hindi film music, because he gave opportunity to Lata mangeshkar for her first Hindi film Playback song in his film ” Aap ki Sewa mein”-1947. In the film Golkunda ka qaidi-1954, 6 singers were used for 8 songs. They were, Sudha malhotra, geeta dutt, Shamshad begum, Madhubala Jhaveri, Rafi and Premnath.
One of the actors in the cast was Indumati. Hardly anyone will know about her. She and her sister Kumudini were known as ‘Lele Sisters’. Lele was their Surname.
INDUMATI LELE (Born 18 December 1927 – Died 11 September 2013), forgotten Yesteryear Indian Theatre and Film Actress turned Folk Artiste.
Indumati and Kumudini Lele who were once famous as ‘Lele Sisters’ in Hindi and Marathi Theatre and Cinema fields, have been forgotten today. Indumati Lele, died at the age of 86, when she was still working as an examiner for the television program ‘Dum Damadam’.
Kumud and Indumati, were both known as ‘Lele Sisters” in the fifties. Both of them originally hailed from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Their father Girdhar Lele was in Government job as Director of Agriculture, at Indore. From an early age, the two sisters loved acting and dancing. Both were involved in dance and dance related activities in their school. Prithviraj Kapoor saw the two at one of the school events and talked to their father and brought them straight to Mumbai. For the next two years, both sisters worked as artists in Prithviraj Kapoor’s ‘Prithvi Theatres” until the company closed. They played different roles in several of his Plays and had the fortune of touring India all along with Prithviraj Kapoor.
While Kumudini acted in Bimal Roy’s ‘Parivar’, ‘Bandini’ etc. and in few Marathi films like ‘Ram Ram Pauna’ etc., Indumati Lele acted in Prithviraj Kapoor’s’ Shakuntala’ and other plays. She also acted in some films while working in ‘Prithvi Theaters’, like Mazdoor-45, ‘Shehnai’ (1947), ‘Aag’ (1948), ‘Sunahare Din’ (1949), ‘Gauna’ (1950), Actor-51, Golkunda ka Qaidi-1954, ‘Chaudhwin ka Chand’ (1960), ‘Budtameez’ (1966), ‘Man Mandir’ (1971), to name a few. In Raj Kapoor’s ‘Aag’ (1948), she acted as his mother. She also appeared in two English films, ‘Householder’ with Leela Naidu and ‘Shakespearewallah” both with Shashi Kapoor.
Because of actor Premnath’s singing in films, confusion was created with another Sama Name Music Director Premnath. Many people believed that Premnath was an actor as well as Music Director. But these were two different people. It was a case of Sama Name Confusion.
Premnath Malhotra (21 November 1926 – 03 November 1992), known as Prem nath, was an actor, director and also a singer.
He was born in the Karimpura locality near Ghanta Ghar in Peshawar, (undivided India) now in Pakistan. His family moved to Jabbalpore, now Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh after partition & he moved to Bombay, where he was discovered as an actor.
Premnath married actress Bina Rai. Their children are actor Prem Krishen & Kailash Nath (Monty). They are also grandparents of actress Akanksha Malhotra and director Siddharth Malhotra who are Prem Krishen’s children. Adiraj Malhotra & Arjun Malhotra are the sons of Kailash Nath. His sister Krishna married Raj Kapoor, while his other sister Uma was married to veteran Hindi Film actor Prem Chopra. His brothers Rajendranath and Narendranath were also actors who mostly appeared in comic and supporting roles. He was also a close friend of the actress Asha Parekh.
Premnath made his film debut in “Ajit” 1948 opposite Monica Desai, which was one of the first colour films. He got major roles in Raj Kapoor’s first directorial film “Aag” & “Barsaat” (1949) which was his first major success. Premnath went on to appear in many films for the next three decades, some of which were the biggest block-busters in Indian film history. The films in which he played the leading role failed to do well, but the films in which he played the central villain role or supporting role were some of the biggest blockbusters in Indian film history. Some his most notable films were Aan (1952), Teesri Manzil (1966), Johny Mera Naam (1970),Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Dharmatma (1975), Kalicharan (1976) and Desh Premee (1982). He also starred in the Punjabi film Sat Sri Akal (1977).
Premnath fell in love with actress Bina Rai during the filming of “Aurat”. They married and formed a production company together called P. N. films. They held high hopes for their films, which didn’t become hits, such as Shagufa, Prisoner of Golconda, Samunder and Watan. Thus, the Premnath & Bina Rai pair never clicked on the screen.
Premnath earned Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for Shor (1972), Bobby (1973), Amir Garib (1974) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). But he never got any award.
Apart from Hindi films, he also appeared in an episode of the American television series “Maya” in 1967 & a 1969 American film titled “Kenner Sandy” opposite former American football player turned actor Jim Brown. He also directed the film Samundar (1957) for his home production house P. N. films, which was its production. His last film appearance was in “Hum Dono” (1985) after which he retired from acting.
He acted in 121 films. His last film was Farz ki Keemat-1985. He directed 2 films- Golkonda ka qaidi-1954 and Samunder-1957. He sang 5 songs in 5 films.
Premnath died on 03 November 1992 of a heart attack at the age of sixty-five in Mumbai. (adapted from an article by Suresh Sarvaiya ji and book ” The stars of Indian Screen” by Baburao Patel.)
