Today’s song is from a very old film- Dharmveer-1937.
The producer and director was Master Vinayak, who was the owner of the banner, Huns Pictures- Bombay which had made this film. The music was by Annasaheb Mainkar and for this film, his assistant was the old time composer- B.S.Hoogan aka Balwant Singh Hoogan. The cast of the film was Baburao Pendharkar, Master Vinayak, Ratnaprabha, Jawadekar, Bhaurao Datar, Indira Wadkar and others. It had story, dialogues and screenplay by the famous Marathi writer-P.K.Atre aka Acharya Atre aka Pralhad Keshav Atre. This film was the beginning of an effective partnership in making comedy films by Huns Pictures.
Their first picture was Dharmaveer-1937, the theme of which was borrowed from a play by Ibsen, a Norwegian playwright of the 19th century. The theme was very appropriate with the changing times of the nation. Due to the independence struggle and Gandhiji, there emerged a crop of selfish pseudo leaders in every place. This film was a satire on such leaders, with crisp dialogues which evoked laughter. This Bi-lingual was a roaring success, as it spoke the public’s mind. His two subsequent films, Premveer( a take on collegians) and the most famous iconic Bramhachary- all 3 in Hindi and Marathi. The story of the film was…..
Deenanath(Pendharkar) is a rich person in the city and he is known as a great social worker and philanthropist. He always projects himself as a helper of the poor and the needy. Also as a very pious and religious person. Actually, in his real life, he is a crook, hypocrite, cruel and immoral person. He always pretends to drink ‘Gangajal’ from his kamandalu, which in reality contains foreign whisky, and NOT Gangajal. Not only this, he has also killed his first wife, by poison, to claim her Insurance money. He swindles and uses simple women.
Jagdish (Vinayak) is an honest, simple youngster, who has failed in his matriculation exam 8 times. He works in a shop. He is in love with Kasturi(Ratnaprabha) who reciprocates his love. She sells flowers on the street.
Now Deenanath wants Kasturi for his pleasures and tries tricks with his henchman(Jawdekar). Jagdish and Kasturi, with the help of their friends, expose Deenanath and he is arrested by the police. The people are so happy with Jagdish, that he becomes their hero and they take a procession with him. Jagdish gives them a long speech and warns them NOT to make another Deenanath. His feet are firmly on the ground and he is happy with Kasturi.
Master Vinayak was a very important personality in Marathi and Hindi films of the early era of Indian Cinema. He was the kind person who gave the young, 13 year old Lata Mangeshkar her first job. After her father Deenanath’s demise, she was looking for a job, as she was the eldest of the 5 siblings and looking after her mother.
Master Vinayak Karnataki ( 19-1-1906 to 19-8-1947) was born in Kolhapur. He was related to V.Shantaram and Bhal G. Pendharkar also. In fact, these three families had strange relationships. Bhal ji Pendharkar (Bhalchandra Gopal Pendharkar) was the son of Dr.Gopal Pendharkar, the Royal Physician of Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur state and his partner Radhabai. Dr. Gopal was already married to another lady. This couple gave birth to Bhalji and Baburao Pendharkar. Their mother Radhabai left Dr. Gopal Pendharkar and married Damodar Karnataki. They had two sons- Master Vinayak (father of Baby Nanda), famous actor, director, producer and a studio owner and his brother Vasudev- who became a Cameraman. Kamalabai, the younger sister of Radhabai married Rajaram Vankudre and they had 2 sons- V.Shantaram, famous actor, director, producer and a studio owner and his brother V. Awadhoot- equally famous Cinematographer.
Many of his cousins and family members were already in the Film line. His half brothers Bhal ji and Baburao Pendharkar, maternal cousin V. Shantaram and his brother V.Avadhoot ( cinematographer) were in films. His own brother Vasudev also became a cameraman. Master Vinayak was working as a Teacher in a school, but Bhalji brought him in films. Initially Vinayak was with Prabhat, working under Shantaram and learning many things. He started his own company ” Hans Pictures” in partnership with Baburao Pendharkar and cameraman Pandurang Naik. Their first film was Chhaya-36. (almost all films made by Vinayak till 47 were bilingual in Marathi and Hindi-sometimes with different Titles ( like Ardhangi in Marathi became Ghar ki rani-40 in Hindi etc.)
While Shantaram stressed on technical aspects of film making successfully, Vinayak was keen on a strong story. Therefore he used the works of Top class writers in Marathi like V.S.Khandekar, P.K.Atre, Mama Varerkar etc. ( V.S.Khandekar, later won Sahitya Akademi award, Jnanpith award, Padma Bhushan award and many honours like D.Litt etc. The Government issued a Postage stamp after his death also). Film Chhaya won many awards and was commercially successful. Then came Dhrmaveer-37 and Premveer-37 ( The Heroine in this film was Ashalata-wife of Anil Biswas). Then came the film Jwala-38, with Chandramohan in both versions-Marathi and Hindi. He learnt to speak excellent Marathi for this film. Later he did 3 more Marathi films also. Unfortunately, the film Jwala was a resounding flop-not because of anything else. According to V.S.Khandekar, Vinayak had meddled with the story too much. ( this looks to be a chronic ailment of the film line !)
Vinayak fell back on comedy and made Brahmachari-38 and Brandi ki botal-39. Both were successful, but the loss due to Jwala was too big. Even one more comedy- Ghar ki rani-40 could not salvage the damage and Hans pictures was dissolved to form another company Navyug Chitrapat, with added P.K.Atre as a partner. Navyug was the first film company to offer 100 rs. shares directly to the public. ( Bombay Talkies had shares with only the directors, initially). The first film was Lapandav-40. Though successful, P.K.Atre left the company- (along with its Heroine Vanmala- his consort) and established his own company Atre Pictures.
After another comedy, Navyug made Amrit-41. In the year 1942, Navyug made the film ‘ Pahili Mangalagaur”-42, in which Lata Mangeshkar made her debut as an actress and singer. She sang her first ever film song with Snehprabha Pradhan- under the baton of Dada Chandekar. There was a kissing scene of Snehprabha and Shahu Modak in this film. During the making of this film, Vinayak left Navyug and started his own ” Prafull Pictures”. Vinayak made several Hindi and Marathi films including Badi Maa-45.
While Vinayak was at Kolhapur, one day a slim, slender 13 year old girl came to his office. She touched his feet and sat on the mat. She was young Lata.
Lata said- My father has just died. I need a job.
Vinayak- But you are only 12-13 year old. What job can you do ?
Lata- I can act and sing.
Vinayak asked her to sing. Impressed with her singing he said- You sing well. You will have a bright future.
Lata- Sir, I am thinking of my Present, today.
Vinayak smiled and said- You are employed by me on a 60 Rs. pm salary. You will act and sing in our films.
After this, till he died, master Vinayak helped Lata to get established in Hindi films. She never forgot this help.
Master Vinayak had married Sushilabai (sister of actress Indira Wadkar and aunt of actress Hansa Wadkar) and not Minakshi Shirodkar-as popularly believed. They only had professional relationships. Minakshi was already married before joining films. Baby Nanda, the famous actress of Hindi films, was Master Vinayak’s daughter, from wife Sushilabai.
Vinayak died on 19-8-1947, just 4 days after Independence.
The M.D of film Dharmaveer -1937 was Annasaheb Mainkar. There were only 3 people in the film industry who were called Annasaheb and by coincidence, they were all Music Directors. The First was Anna Saheb Mainkar, the Second was Anna Saheb aka K. Datta aka Datta Korgaonkar and the Third was Anna Saheb aka C.Ramchandra. Today’s song was the first song sung by actress/singer Indira Wadkar (Hansa Wadkar’s paternal aunt).
Hansa Wadkar’s father had three sisters, Kesharbai, Indirabai and Sushilabai. Sushila was married to Master Vinayak, a renowned actor-director of the early era of Indian cinema. The elder sister as well as Indira Wadkar were acting in films and Indira was a classical singer as well. Indira acted in several films including Duniya Kya Hai (Resurrection) (1937) and in Vinayak’s production company “Hans Films” like Devata (1939) in Marathi. Indira used the surname Wadkar to avoid using the family name Salgaokar, for fear of reprisal from society against women acting in films. Her older sister, Kesharbai, was working in a film made by M.G. Rangnekar and she suggested that Wadkar work in films to sustain her family. Indira Wadkar acted in 11 Hindi films. She was a popular nasty mother- in-law in Marathi films.
Let us now enjoy this 88 year old Debut song of Indira Wadkar….
