Today’s song is from a “special” film – Nishani-1942.

The film was made by Shorey Pictures, Lahore. It was directed by the producer and the owner of the banner – Roop K. Shorey. Music was composed by Pt. Amarnath (Batish) for all the 10 songs penned by Hazarat Aziz Kashmiri. The cast of the film was Majnu ( real name Harold Lewis), Ragini, Rooplekha (Jew actress, sister of more famous actress Ramola. Real name Sofia Cohen), M.D.Kanwar and many others.

Now, coming to why I say that this was a “special’ film ? I did so because in this one film 3 persons – Rooplekha, Music Director Pt. Amarnath (Batish) and Singer Naseem Akhtar made their Debuts.

Rooplekha-real name Sofia Cohen, a Jew girl – was the elder sister of the more famous actress Ramola, who came into limelight with her costume and acting in the film Khazanchi-1941. Rooplekha worked only in 5 films, namely, Nishani-1942, Shukriya-1944 (opposite Hero Sunder, who, in the later years had become a Comedian), Albeli-1945, Jhoothi Kasmen-1948 and Jawani ki Aag-1951. Then she got married and left films.

Pt. Amarnath Batish was the eldest brother of Bhagatram and Husnlal, who became a famous M.D. pair in the late 1940’s and the 1950’s, known as Husnlal-Bhagatram. I am specifically writing Pt. Amarnath Batish because there was another Music Director Pt. Amarnath Chawla in the same period causing ‘ Same Name Confusion’.

Amarnath Batish was born in 1912 in Jalandhar. He started his career as an actor and singer on stage dramas. He was a good Harmonium and Tabla player. He started his career with HMV as an Orchestra Director, in Delhi. Master Madan, the child Prodigy, recorded a few Punjabi songs under his baton.

It was natural that Amarnath joined Films. His first film was Roop K Shorey’s Nishani-1942. Pandit ji had discovered Naseem Akhtar. She and Shamshad begum sang songs for him. In the same year, his first Punjabi film Govandi-42 was released. His new find Zeenat Begum sang in it. Even Amarnath sang a song ” Pagadi utaar jatta” along with S D Batish and chorus in it. However, the British government banned this Patriotic song. The film was a hit film. Film Daasi-44 was his most popular film. All songs became hits. He did a film Irada-44, in Calcutta in which he introduced Hemant Kumar in Hindi films.

Simultaneously, he was giving music to Punjabi films too like Koel-44 and Gul Baloch-45.During the 40s decade Pt. Amarnath was the most busy composer, with a line up like- Nishani-42, Paapi-43, Irada-44, Daasi-44, Panchhi-44, Shirin Farhad-45, Ragini-45, Kaise Kahoon-45, Dhamkee-45, Sham Savera-46, Shalimar-46, Shehar se door-46, Jhumke-46, Aai Bahar-46, pagdandi-47, Mirza Saheban-47, Roop Rekha-48 and Ek Teri Nishani-49.

He gave music to 18 Hindi films, composing 152 songs in all. Due to his success, he started taking drinks, which became his nemesis. At the time of filming Pagdandi-47, after a few songs, he was replaced by Khurshid Anwar. Even in his last two films Roop Rekha-48 and Ek teri nishani-49 after a few songs, he was replaced by other MDs. Film Patjhad, which he had signed, was given to Ghulam Haider.

During the making of film Mirza Sahiban-47, Pt. Amarnath died at the age of just 35 years, on 20-2-1947. The balance songs were done by Husnlal Bhagatram. (Adapted with thanks, from Film Sangeetkar by Prof. Yadav, an article by Sharad Dutt in milleniumpost.in, Dhunon ki yatra by P.Raag, HFGK, muVyz and my notes).

The third Debutant was singer Naseem Akhtar.

The history of Hindi Films and Music is replete with unsolved mysteries, disputes, misinformation, riddles and puzzles as well as half or wrong information. Fortunately, there are a few dedicated workers who constantly dig out correct information and few matters are thus resolved. Though delayed, at least the true information thus becomes available for the future.

There was a case of who actually sang the song ” Dilli se aaya bhai Tingoo” from the film EK THI LADKI-1949. For almost 50-60 years it was believed that Honey O’Brion, who lip synched this song in the film had sung this song herself-though there was no history of her singing any songs anytime. And then the interview of singer Binota Chakraborty (nee Vinita Amladi ) was published in July 2007 in the Listeners’ Bulletin of Hamraz ji, and it was revealed that it was she who had actually sung this song !

Then there was a mystery about the real singers of the famous song “Bharat ki ek sannari ki….” from the film Ramrajya-1943. For more than 60 years, it was wrongly believed that the song was sung by Madhusudan Bhatt ( as Kush) and Yeshwant Nikam (as Luv). The name of Ram Marathe was also taken. Finally, a senior RMIM member Dhananjay Naniwadekar proved that in reality the song was sung by Yeshwant Balkrishna Joshi and Yeshwant Nikam. This was published in Hamraz’s ‘Listener’s Bulletin No.154 of November-2012.

Similarly, the name of the Music Director Mohan Junior (Ajamil-48 and Dana pani-52) was treated as the cover-name of Music Director Madan Mohan. After about 60 years, it was proved that Mohan junior (Real name- Mohan Kanoji Rajpoot) was a Gujarati composer and a different person-and NOT Madan Mohan. Even Madhubala Jhaveri who sang for him also confirmed this, in an answer to a Telephone call made to her.

It was commonly believed that the Music Director pair of ” VASANT-RAMCHANDRA ” ( Kalakar, Suhagan of 1954) was short forms of Vasant Desai and C.Ramchandra. The myth of almost 65 years was busted when it was revealed that C.Ramchandra himself had said that it was not him and Vasant Desai, but they were Vasant Prabhu and Ramchandra Vadhavkar. Later on information in the book ” Marathi Sangeetkar Kosh” by Madhu Potdar further reconfirmed this.

One more example is that of Child actor Shashi Kapoor. It was popularly believed that Shashi Kapoor (Deewar, Trishul,Dharmaputra fame) had acted as a child artist in about 25 films. This misinformation was cleared when the real child artist-Shashichand Kapoor gave an interview on Cineplot and Maitri Manthan, explaining that it was him who had acted in 21 films as child actor (Bhakta Prahlad-46 etc). Shashi Kapoor (Deewar wala) had actually done only 5 child roles-in Aag, Bhakta Bilwamangal, Patanga, Sangram and Aawara.

In the case of singer-Naseem Akhtar also, the same thing was happening. Till now, it was popularly believed that Naseem Akhtar was the sister of Sardar Akhtar( wife of Mehboob Khan) and Bahar Akhtar( wife of A.R.Kardar) but it is NOT TRUE !

Shri Kamalakar Pasupuleti, senior Film and music historian has informed that Naseem was NOT their sister.

Both Sardar Akhtar-known as Daari and Bahar Akhtar-known as Beharo were tawaifs of Hiramandi Lahore. When A R Kardar eloped with Bahar Akhtar and married her, Sardar Akhtar registered a Police complaint of abduction. Kardar and his family were arrested and put in lock up. It was only after Bahar’s statement that she married Kardar on her own choice that they were released. Sardar Akhtar herself later married Mehboob Khan.

Naseem Akhtar’s father was a Sarangi player. They were originally from Kashmir. She was born in 1924. She started singing on Lahore Radio. Impressed with her singing style, composer Pt. Amarnath gave her a break in Nishani-1942. Till then she used to sing at rich persons’ functions and mehfils etc. After Nishani, she came to Bombay to sing for Khooni Laash-43. She never acted in any films. She sang in Bhai, Ek din ka Sultan, 40 karod, Flat no.9, Pehli nazar, Ratnavali, Dharma, Sanyasi, Tadbir, Shahjehan, Nek Parveen, Safar, Keemat, Sohni Mahiwal, Bhanwar, Ek Roz, Doli, Parai Aag etc. She sang for Naushad, Ghulam Mohd, Anil Biswas, Shyamsunder, Ghulam Hyder, Rafiq Ghaznavi, Govind Ram, Sajjad Hussain, Firoze Nizami and C.Ramchandra.

She left for Pakistan after Partition and sang in a few films, but was not successful. She got married and settled as a housewife. It seems that she died in Lahore on 11-5-2011 at the age of 87 years. Shri Kamalakar ji’s friend Mr. Sayeed Malik, a famous Film and Music Historian of Pakistan, had interviewed Naseem Akhatar and got information about her from her in person. Sayeed Malik’s articles on pre-partition films/music are published on the internet and some are available even today, on RMIM Archives, for anyone to read. Sayeed Malik also died in 2007.

Film Nishani-1942 was a story of 2 Look-Alikes, who were not twins. The story was….

Not far from Lahore is a village, Desoo. There lives Ajit, the son of the Choudhari-a graduate without work. His father wants to get him married. But Ajit finds it ridiculous. He leaves the house to escape matrimonial bondage. Tired and fatigued he sleeps under a tree.

In Lahore- Lives an exact double of Ajit. Ranjit and his beautiful wife, Indira, are a happy couple enjoying each other’s love and devotion. Ranjit is a rich man and fond of excitement and adventure. . Ranjit bumps into Ajit. The collision leads to complications. Ranjit’s motor-bike runs out of control just where Ajit is lying asleep. The one is taken for the other. Ranjit gets caught among the villagers of Desoo and considered a lunatic. He is sent to Lahore asylum. Ajit is taken for Ranjit and is removed to the house.

Ajit is dazed to find himself married without marriage. He wants to avoid Indira, the wife of Ranjit. Doctor Ganesh Das puts him down as an unhinged brain. But Ajit knows he has to act under the circumstances. And as usual, the youngman finds love the only thing for a useful diversion. He makes friends with one L.Kishori Lal whose sister Leela easily takes care of him. Indira comes to know about the proposed `remarriage’ of her `husband’.

But all her efforts to avert this crisis are of no avail. The pair makes a good escape. Ajit and Leela are enjoying their honey-moon in the Green Hotel. On the other hand, Ranjit manages to escape from the lunatic asylum and comes to town. Here again Ranjit and Ajit exchange their identities.

Ajit is at a barber’s shop when taken for Ranjit, the runaway lunatic. Ranjit is claimed by Leela at Greens. Ranjit knows there is a mistake but cannot help it and there is a terrible row. In the midst of this scene jumps the party headed by Indira and Kishori Lal, chasing Leela Ajit. And then someone calls the Police too.

Finally, it is Indira who checks the Birthmarks of Ranjit and declares him as the Right Ranjit. Thus she gets Ranjit. Then Ajit is brought from the Asylum and identified by the birthmarks by Leela. He is also certified. This way the ‘Nishanis’ or the Birthmarks save everyone( including the audience) and the film ends on a Happy note.

Here is a song from the film Nishani-1942, sung by Shamshad Begum, Zeenat Begum and Naseem Akhtar. Enjoy this 83 year old song….
