Today’s song is from the movie ‘Soorajmukhi’ (as spelled in the title of the movie) from the year 1992. I came across this song almost five years back and liked it very much. I have listened to this song several times by now. However, I didn’t have much information about this movie so kept covering this song pending for future. Thereafter I noticed that this movie was made available on an online video sharing platform. I watched the movie and then I became curious to know more about the lyricist of the songs of this movie viz Sharda Nand Tiwary. I had earlier presented a song penned by him on the blog on 01.11.2022. That song too is a very nice song with good lyrics. Finally, one day I came across the profile of Sharda Nand Tiwary on a social media platform for professionals. With this information on hand, I was now ready to present this song.

Dr Shardanand Tiwary the writer of this song comes from Patna Bihar. He has a PhD in Hindi Language & Literature from Patna University, Bihar. In his bio-info page on the social media platform he introduces himself as a ‘Cultural Activist’, ‘Writer-Poet-Lyricist’, and Freelance Adviser, a person of ‘Media, Tourism, Sports and Cultural Events’. He is scholar of languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, English and Sanskrit. He has done short term Theatre Training courses with specialization in ‘Writing’ and ‘Direction’. And worked in almost all types of mediums of expressions like the print media, audio-visual media (like radio, film and television) etc. He was also the editor of national level magazines like ‘Stardust’, ‘Health and Nutrition’, ‘Swasthya Jeevan-Dhaaraa’ etc. He was also an editor for an investigative crime magazine and edited a weekly ‘Krantisheel Yuva’ in Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati & English language. He has poetic collections like ‘Antah: Jwaalaa’, ‘Jazbaat Ke Jungle Mein’ (both in Hindi) and ‘Baanjh Kee Peedaa’ (Poems’ collection in Bhojpuri) published on his name.

Starting his career as a Programme Announcer for All India Radio, Patna he worked there from 1975 to 1982 creating his own style of modulation and expression of voice keeping in view of listener’s choice and importance of the programmes. He also assisted there in production activities and different types of broadcasting materials. From 1982 to 1994 – twelve years- he wrote and produced films including the today’s feature film ‘Soorajmukhee’ under his banner of ‘Kalakunj Chitram’. He produced several documentaries like ‘Along With Buddha’ (multilingual), ‘Rajgir: An Experience’ (in English), ‘Praacheen Magadh Saamraajya’ (in Hindi), ‘Buddh Mahotsav (in Hindi & English) etc.

As a lyricist for Hindi films he had written songs for the movies ‘Is Paar Yaa Us Paar’, ‘Soorajmukhi’, Maashooqaa’, ‘Gulmohar’ etc. He has a special record on his name too. In the history of more than 100 years of the Indian Film Music, he is credited as being the fourth lyricist, after Nyaay Sharma, Shakeel Badayuni and Rajendra Krishan, whose lyrics have been sung by all the four Mangeshkar sisters; Lata, Meena, Asha and Usha; in one film. Here is the list of the other lyricists where the lyrics have been sung by all the four Mangeshkar sisters in a film– Nyaay Sharma (‘Anjali-1956’), Shakeel Badayuni (‘Mother India-1957’), Rajendra Krishan (‘Gateway of India-1957’) and after a gap of thirty-three years in the year ‘1990’ for Sharda Nand Tewary in the movie ‘Is Paar Ya Us Paar”. Around ‘1991’ to ‘1994’ Sharda Nand Tewary worked as a Executive Editor for ‘Oriental Publications of Vande Mataram Group, Mumbai’ and for ‘Magna Publications, Mumbai’ from ‘1994 to 1998’. From ‘1998’ ‘to ‘2003’ he was associated with Prabha Prakashan, Mumbai as a Publisher & Chief Editor where he published and edited the bilingual magazine ‘SWASTHYA JEEVAN-DHAARA’. Later he worked as Principal Adviser & Event Co-ordinator with the Department of Tourism, Bihar where his tenure was from ‘2003’ to ‘2010’. During this stint of him with the Government of Bihar, while advising on promotional and development issues related to multimedia publicities, he co-ordinated for national and international events like ‘World Heritage Dedication Ceremony’ of ‘Mahabodhi Temple, Bodhgaya’ in ‘2003’, ‘Nalanda Heritage Summit’ ‘2006’, and ‘Rajgir Mahotsav’, ‘Vaishali Mahotsav’ , ‘Buddha Mahotsav’ etc.
The Bihar tourism department won the best ‘tableau’ award on the occasion of ‘Republic Day Celebrations’ from 2003 to 2010 under his co-ordination. He continues to be a freelance writer and providing event management services thereafter since ‘2010’.

Sharda Nand Tewary produced the movie ‘Soorajmukhee’ for ‘Kala-Kunj Chitram’ which was passed by the Censor Board on 14.09.1992. It was directed by Y.P. Babul. It had Parikshit Sahni, Rehana Sultan, Kunal, Sangeeta Naik, Polsan, Huma Khan, and Raksha Mehta in special appearance, with Prabhat Chandra Mishra, Kamleshwari P. Verma, Akhileshwar, Ramesh Chandra, Maharana, Shivaji Singh, S. Rizwan, Shaiilesh Jamaiyyaar, Shyam Mehrotra, Ashok Verma, Prakash Agrawal, Nidhi Sinha, Archana Muzumdar, Shyamlee, Shabnam Sinha, Sushma, Raj Lakshami, Mohan Singh Rawat, Krishna Lal, Kuldeep, Chandra Deep, Roopesh, Surendra Puri, and Baby Shalu, and Baby Pooja.
The story of this movie ‘Soorajmukhee’ is written by Alka Sinha, and screenplay and dialogues are written by Sharda Nand Tiwari and Y. P. Babul. The editing of this movie is done by S.R. Sawant. Yogesh, Sharda Nand Tiwari, and Laxman ‘Shahabaadi’ are the lyricists and music for this film is composed by Ajay Swami. Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Bhupinder Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Dilraj Kaur, Shailendra Singh, Ratna Arun, Inaamuddin, and Sangeeta Naik are the singers.

Here is how we are introduced to the characters of this movie and how the story of this movie gets unfolded on screen.

Kumar (Parikshit Sahni) and Sandhya (Rehana Sultana) are associated with Mr. Bhaskar (I am unable to identify the actor), and they are part of his Bhaskar Associates. Both Kumar and Sandhya are staying with Mr Bhaskar. Mr Bhaskar is a lonely person, but he had made Kumar and Sandhya his family members including his driver Abu Miyan. Kumar is a widower as his wife has passed away (in an attack by wild animals) and he has a daughter Poonam. Sandhya was married to Deepak, but he marries another girl and settles abroad leaving Sandhya alone.

The three main characters introduced on screen, i.e. Mr Bhaskar, Kumar and Sandhya have their past, and somehow, they are attached to it. But while Mr Bhaskar has moved ahead in life as he believes in ‘the show must go on’, Kumar and Sandhya have not been able to move away from their past to make a new beginning as Mr Bhaskar wants them too. However, one fine day Mr Bhaskar gets a call from Geneva where his past Jennie is staying as she has fallen sick with paralysis and needs him. He met Jennie in Switzerland before when he was travelling various countries and they had a relationship for few years. After that Mr Bhaskar wants to return to his motherland India and Jennie wants to stay back in her motherland Switzerland. Now Mr Bhaskar wants to spend the remaining years of their life together which Jennie also wants too. While leaving for Geneva Mr Bhaskar takes Poonam (daughter of Kumar) with him, so that she can grow and develop in a open environment there. Mr Bhaskar gives all the responsibilities of his business to Kumar and Sandhya. So Sandhya starts into dealing with all decision making aspects of their business too, which some people in the office do not like. Kunal (Kunal) is one of them. As time flies Mr Bhaskar passes away, but not before expressing his wish of Kumar and Sandhya’s marriage in a letter to Sandhya. Kumar’s daughter Poonam grows into a lookalike of her mother (Sangeeta Naik in double role). When she returns to India, she incidentally meets Kunal in their offices and both of them fall in love after some initial ‘nok-jhonk’, and get married. However the growing interference of Sandhya at home and in office irritates Kunal. In addition to this the attention that Poonam gives to both Sandhya and Kumar leaves him frustrated which Kumar notices when he hears a conversation between them. During one such discussions between Kunal, Poonam and Sandhya, Kunal questions Sandhya’s relationship between Sandhya and Kumar and her staying with him for all these years, Kumar intervenes and slaps Kunal. Sandhya proposes Kumar of leaving him and the family for the better. Kumar already annoyed with Kunal’s behavior suffers an attack and gets bedridden. Sandhya visits Kunal and asks him to return back to Mr Kumar as he is his son-in-law and he loves his daughter Poonam, and for Poonam, Kunal is her love. Kunal realizes his mistake and reaches to Kumar. Kumar in his last breathes remembers Godavari (his wife) and feeling her around leaves this world while telling her to ask her daughter to forgive him, as though he tried to give her all the happiness in the world he fell short of it while dealing with Kunal. After passing away of Kumar, Sandhya decides to leave Poonam and Kunal, but both of them persuade her and take her back with them to stay with them.

We can see that while every character in the story seems to be following the philosophy of a ‘Sunflower’ from east to west and their aspirations always facing the sun or the brighter side of the life. For Kumar who lost his wife the only ray of hope is his daughter Poonam. Poonam the growing baby is the center of affection and emotions for all. Sandhya finds the fatherly affection under the roof of Mr Bhaskar. She also dedicates her life providing support to the growing child Poonam till she leaves for Geneva with Mr Bhaskar. Mr Bhaskar wants that Kumar and Sandhya should come together, but finally when Sandhya has made up her mind to accept his suggestion, Mr Bhaskar passes away and Sandhya could not open her mind to Kumar, though she gives him a couple of hints of this. After Poonam returns to India and gets married to Kunal, the love of Poonam gets divided for her father, her husband and her aunty Sandhya. Kunal confused with understanding the relation between Kumar and Sandhya, and Sandhya’s control over decision in professional matters as well as her interference at home, fails to cope up with the situation till he realizes his mistake, but by the time Mr Kumar passes away leaving Poonam, Kunal and Sandhya.

Or is it only the character of Sandhya who truly follows the philosophy of the ‘sunflower’ where she dedicates all her life to Kumar and his family? Without seeking anything for herself, and leaving aside her personal aspirations?

Today’s song with beautiful lyrics by Sharda Nand Tewary is a background song that gets played on screen several times in parts, and only the mukhda gets played in some scenes of the movie. The first ‘stanza’ of the song is played in the background while the titles roll on the screen. The second stanza happens when Mr Bhaskar sends a letter to Sandhya expressing his wish of her getting married to Kumar and starting a new life and forgetting her past. The third stanza is played in the end of the movie with a break in between as Kumar passes away.

MOTHER INDIA and GATEWAY OF INDIA were the only 2 movies I had thought to have all the 4 Mangeshkar sisters as singers. Thank you for mentioning the other 2.
