‘Baaghi Shehzaada’ (1964) was produced under the banner of GeePee Films and was directed by Maruti. The cast included Kishore Kumar and Kumkum in the lead roles supported by Anwar Hussain, B M Vyas, Shyam Kumar, W M Khan, Altaf, Madhumati, Bela Bose, Uma Khosla, Maruti, Mirajkar, Indira etc. The film is a typical ‘B’ grade of action genre.
In the recent times, I have watched more than dozen films of ‘B’ grade films with the background of royal stories. Typically, in such films, there is a king who is facing the revolt from his Sipahsalar (commander-in-chief), generally his relative, who succeed in his revolt. Either the king runs away or is killed and his minor son is taken care by a loyalist of the king far away in the forest. The son grows up under loyalist’s guidance and becomes a Robinhood type of decoit who mainly target the royal treasury. In between, the decoit rescues the princess while on hunting in the forest or similar outings. She falls in love with him. But the king’s new commander-in-chief wants to marry the princess with an eye on the kingdom. At the same time, he has got one more beautiful singer/dancer to entertain him to whom he promises marrying her.
There would be frequent sword fights between the two suitors for the princess with their supporters which take place longer than necessary with some comic elements. Then, there is a comical side-plot which is fitted to suit the front benchers in the theatre. In the kingdom, the subjects are fed up with the new commander-in-chief who is a de facto king and is cruel with them. His own lover turns against him when she comes to know that he would marry the princess. Some of his own men work for the prince turned decoit who later learn from his birth mark or a royal tattoo that he is the prince of the kingdom. He returns triumphally to his kingdom as the new king with the help of the disgruntled people in the kingdom and marries the princess.
‘Baaghi Shehzaada’ (1964) follows, more or less, the typical storyline of ‘B’ grade films with royal background. The story of the film is as under:
Shakir Ali (Altaf) urgently visits Shahenshah Alam (W M Khan) to inform him that his brother, Commander-in-Chief, Mir Qasam (Shyam Kumar) has revolted against him and he is on his way to the palace along with his supporters to storm the palace. He said that it is better for the Shahenshah to escape with the family before Mir Qasam and his troops capture the palace and kill him. He reveals that he has already made the arrangements for the escape. Shahenshah decides to leave his kingdom at once with his pregnant wife Malka Gul Bano (Paro Devi), family and supporters. All of them board a ship.
Mir Qasam and his troops take control of the palace but by that time Shahenshah and his supporters have already fled. Mir Qasam proclaims himself as the new king of the kingdom and orders to capture Shahenshah and his supporters whether dead or alive. During the voyage, Malka Gul Bano gives birth to twin boys. In the mid sea, the ship faces the severe storm and is in the verge of sinking. Shahenshah puts the birth marks on the arms of the newly born sons, places each of them in two wooden boxes and throws it in the sea. Malka Gul Bano also jumps into the sea and follows the wooden boxes. Shahenshah parishes with the ship.
Malka Gul Bano reaches the shore in an unconscious state with one wooden box lying by her side. Shakir Ali who has also fled with his group after Mir Qasam has taken over the kingdom, has been staying in a cave. He gives shelter to Malka Gul Bano and her one son, Firoz. The second wooden box lands in a fishing net in which the fisherman finds the other son of Malka Gul Bano, Kamal. The fisherman brings the boy to Jabbar (B M Vyas), the commander-in-chief of King Mir Qasam who hands over to his childless Begum.
The two brothers grow up with different guardians – Feroz (Kishore Kumar) with Shakir Ali and Kamal (Anwar Hussain) with Jabbar. Shakir Ali gives training in using arms and sword fighting to Feroz in the forest. But Feroz is more interested in singing and dancing and for that he has created his team of singers and dancers in the forest. It is not liked by Malka Gul Bano. She reminds him that he has born to be a king and not a singer. He assures her that he would work towards achieving her wishes. To the sustenance of his group in the forest, he had become a decoit to loot the royal treasure and distribute among the poor.
Kamal on the other hand has grown up in the luxury of a commander-in-chief, Jabbar. He believes in debauchery and abducts the girls for his entertainments. One day, commander-in-chief Jabbar tells King Mir Qasam that the instances of loot and dacoity have increase. Since he has already become old, he recommends Kasam to be made the next commander-in-chief so that he can tackle the menace of dacoity led by Feroz effectively. Mir Qasam agrees and makes Kamal the commander-in-chief. He has an eye on Princess Zeenat (Kumkum), the only daughter of King Mir Qasam whom he is grooming to take over the kingdom after his death as a Queen. At the same time, Kamal has been giving false promises to Nazma (Indira Bansal) that he will marry her. After becoming commander-in-chief, he assures her that once he becomes the king, he will marry her to be his queen.
Feroz rescues Princess Zeenat from the armed men who were trying to kidnap her when she was on her hunting expedition. Feroz brings her to the cave for shelter. Shakir Ali suggests to make use of Princess Zeenat to bargain from King Mir Qasam who is responsible for depriving him of his legitimate claim on the kingdom. But Feroz and his mother Malka Gul Badan are against such a stand as they feel that their enmity is with Mir Qasam and not with his daughter, Zeenat.
During her stay with Feroz, Zeenat falls in love with him. She has been enjoying her stay in the forest to such an extent that she has forgotten that she has to return to her palace. King Mir Qasam is worried that Princess Zeenat has not yet returned from her hunting expedition. He entrusts the work to Kamal to search for Zeenat and bring her back. Kamal goes with his men and bring Zeenat from Feroz’s cave. Kamal is now so carried away by his success that he pressurises Jabbar to initiate to propose to King Mir Qasam, his marriage with Zeenat. King Mir Qasam rejects the marriage proposal as Jabbar is not from the Royal family.
Now, it is going to be an interesting dual between Feroz and Kamal who are not aware that they are real brothers. Both are vying for the throne of the kingdom and for Princess Zeenat to be their wife. As a first step, Kamal proclaims himself as the king by imprisoning Mir Qasam and puts Princess Zeenat under house arrest. He tortures Mir Qasam to force Zeenat to agree to his demand. This news goes to Feroz through his spy. He with his gang storms the palace but he has to retreat due to heavy deployment of troops by Jabbar who follow him. To save himself, Ferox jumps in a river and reaches his cave. The Jabbar’s men thinks that Feroz is drowned and dead. They report as such to Jabbar.
When Jabbar gives this news to Zeenat, she faints. When the hakim fails to diagnose her illness, Feroz comes in the disguise of a magician who claims that he can cure Zeenat’s illness. Feroz escapes with Zeenat from the palace under the cover of the thick smoke and reach his cave. With the approval of Malka Gul Bano, Feroz is set to marry Zeenat. However, Kamal comes with his troops and rounds up Feroz, Malka Gul Bano and Zeenat. He takes them to his palace and announces the death sentence to Feroz, the next day.
The next day morning, Feroz’s execution by hanging is carried out. His ‘dead body’ is taken out. However, the persons involved in executing his death by hanging is Feroz’s own men who hoodwink Kamal by fixing the noose in the neck loose and they carry him out alive. All of them runaway on their horses. Kamal is in a happy mood. But his lover, Nazma insists om marriage as per his assurance as he has become the King. He spurns her since he would marry princess Zeenat. Nazme joins Zeenat in conspiracy being devised by Feroz.
The marriage ceremony of Kamal with Princess Zeenat is in progress. But the bride is not Zeenat but Nazma whose face is hidden by her Sehra. Feroz and Zeenat disguising themselves as singer and dancer, entertain Kamal. However, soon Firoz and Zeenat come out in their real selves when Feroz’s men in hundreds storm the palace. A fight between Feroz and Kamal comes to the usual ends in which Kamal is seriously injured. However, before his death, he comes to know through the royal sea tattooed on his arms that Feroz is his brother but it is too late. Kamal dies on the lap of his mother, Malka Gul Bano. Feroz becomes a new king and Zeenat his queen.
The film had eight songs written by Noor Dewasi (7) and Raj Mehdi Ali Khan (1)which were set to music by Bipin Datta. Five songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 6th song, ‘udee udee jaaun main udee udee’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Chorus and picturised on Kumkum. The song is written by Noor Dewasi.
The background to the song is that Princess Zeenat (Kumkum) has now grown up. She wants to enjoy the day with her friends. So, they all go for an outing. After her return from outing, King Mir Qasam says to her that for him she is not only his daughter, she is also like a son to him as she would succeed him to the throne of his kingdom.
