Today’s song is the last song from the film Hum bhi kuch kam nahin-1958, making the film YIPPEED !

This Filmistan film was directed by Ramanlal Desai. Its music was composed by S.D.Batish and the cast included Ranjan, Ameeta, Sumitra, P.Kailash, Kanu Roy, Ram Avtar, Raj Kishore and many others.

There were two directors with the same name. Raman (Lalbhai) Desai and Raman (Bhimbhai) Desai. Both were mostly credited as Raman Desai causing confusion. To complicate the issue, there was a third Raman (Vasantlal ) Desai, but he was a famous Gujarati writer and an author. Luckily he never entered the film industry. The first Raman Desai directed all types of films, while the second Raman Desai was known as The King Of Mythologicals.

Ramanlal Lalbhai Desai was born on 6-9-1915 at Ahmedabad . His father was a Station master in the BBCI Railway ( Bombay-Baroda and Central India Railway). He was educated in Bombay and he studied upto Inter-Arts. He soon left his studies to work as an assistant cameraman and assistant Director, in Paramount Pictures for Thief of Baghdad-34. In 1935 he shifted to Ganesh Movietone but came back to Paramount. He was assistant director in Fairy of the flute-36, Guru Ghantal-37 ,Black ghost-37, Burqawali-36, Aladdin-33, Vagabond lover-38, Madhur bansari-39 etc. He co-directed films like Patriot-37, Darpan-41 and Mere Saajan-41, in Rex Pictures. He was a good editor and a musician.

He became a full fledged Director with Daughter of the jungle-42, Muhabbat ki jeet-43, Circus girl-43, Bhagta Bhoot-43, Rangeela Dost-44, Aadhar-45, Kismat ka Dhani-46, Jadui putali-46, Tiger man-47, Naqali Heera-48, Dhanwale-48, Dilwale-48, Roshni-49,Sangeeta-50, Aab e Hayaat-55, Hum bhi kuch kam nahin -58, Minister-59 and Zalim tera jawab nahin-60. He turned to Gujarati films and directed Sole saaj singar-77 and Kul deepak-78.
He was working as a Production supervisor for the film Nastik-54 (credited).

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosle. It is certainly not one of her famous or popular songs. But tell me….Who do you like more, LATA or ASHA ? Most people will say Lata and also start praising her. However, I always like Asha Bhosle – not just for her songs but for being an Inspiration to those who long for success in a life full of difficulties.

Long back, in our Management class, our Professor conducted a survey in the class. He asked us to write the name of the Toothpaste we were using. Those days too, Colgate was the Brand leader. There were 30 students in the class. I was using ‘Macleans’ (a brand that was available in India in those days), so I wrote ‘Macleans’. Then he collected all 30 chits, added his own and started reading. The result was Macleans-8, Kolynos-7, Colgate-7, Forhans-6 and 3 were using tooth powder.

He explained to us that even the Brand leader, not necessarily always, will lead in all consumer groups. It is a collective total which gives the leader its position. The same is the case in any other field. Take the case of Singers. In the 50s to 70s, Lata was the Brand Leader, but I always liked Asha Bhosle.

Asha is Asha. There is no one like her. None can match the oomph, sensuality, innocence, ebullience and all those things that are so synonymous with her voice. Her mimicry skill too has helped her in adapting her voice to suit the actresses or the situation of song in the film. Rafi was another singer who could sing in a special voice for Johnny Walker. This is an unique quality which sets the singer apart from other singers.

To call Asha the most ‘Versatile’ singer is to do a grave injustice to her. In her music, as in her own life, Asha stands for questioning impositions, challenging and redefining boundaries. She made choices in personal life and career, which went against her again and again. She achieved success and glory on her own terms. She has worked with four generations of composers, singers and lyricists, using her experience to adapt for success.

Forced to seek work at a time when Lata was getting to be a sensation, she had to swallow whatever came her way. Many times, it was not even the second Best( Geeta was rated next to Lata ), but she gave her best to those songs. She had no choice but to survive during 1948 to 1956, accepting whatever came her way. Her luck changed in 1957. O.P.Nayyar made her the lead singer in ‘Naya Daur’-57. Same time, the rift between S D Burman and Lata too came to her rescue, as Burman opted for her as a replacement for Lata (Burman, however, wanted Geeta-not Asha, but Geeta was entangled in her family affairs during that time).

With the help of Burman and Nayyar, Asha made a conscious effort to come out of Lata’s shadow. The results were visible instantly. Asha proved that given a half chance, she could do wonders. During 1958 to 1963, Asha’s best songs were for these two composers. Some of those films were, Nau do gyarah, Kala Pani, Sone ki chidiya, Raagini, Howrah bridge, Phagun, Phir wohi dil laya hoon, Sujata, Lajwanti, Bandini etc. By 1963, Lata returned to Burman and he discarded Asha immediately. Sachin da left Asha, but, Nayyar supported her fully and they, together, shook the HFM. Cleverly, Asha also held on to Ravi, and from 1966 she sang for R D Burman also. After splitting with Nayyar in 1970, she stuck to R. D. Burman, even married him.

The story of Asha is an inspiration for anyone who wants to fight for success !

Finally, what do you know about the actor P.Kailash ? He is in this film’s cast. He was not very famous but he was a very good actor. The name of P.Kailash who had worked as a Hero in the past, may be a matter of surprise for some readers. For a long time, I was very curious about this actor. One day I was reading a book ” Asli Nakli Chehre ” ( असली नकली चेहरे ) by Vithal Pandya. In this book, he has given information about P.Kailash, who did the main role in the film ” Jai Hanuman-48″, for which Pandya was an assistant Director.

Vithal Pandya had spent over 30 years in the film industry from the 30s and 40s. He worked with many directors and in many banners. He wrote 2 books in Gujarati/Hindi, which are highly informative with first hand knowledge. For example, he mentions that S N Tripathi, the Music Director was also an actor and was famous in the role of Hanuman in all Wadia movies. However in the film-Jai Hanuman-48, he played the role of Ravan. Anyway, based on information in this book coupled with an article by M N Sardana ji, on Fb page ‘Woh din yaad karo’ about P.Kailash, here is some information on P.Kailash for our readers. My thanks to both of them.

Mr P Kailash (Pandit Kailash Chandra Sharma),was born on 03 February 1924 at Multai , a small town in Distt Betul ( Madhya Pradesh ) .After doing H.S.C., he did a stint of teaching in Akola . Bestowed with sharp features , and deep voice ,fair complexioned P Kailash came to Bombay in 1946 to become an actor . He did not have to wait for a long time to have an entry in the film line .

Seth Chandulal Shah gave him a chance in his mythological movie Jai Hanuman ,as the hero opposite Nirupa Roy . The movie, made under the banner of Ranjit Movietone ,was directed by Ramchandra Thakur . Thereafter , Mr Kailash appeared in many mythological , fantasy and historical movies like Veer Durga Das, Sati Anusuiya , Maha Bharat, Prabhu Ki Mahima, Veer Arjun, Gopal Krishna , Nadir Shah, Thief Of Baghdad, Hercules ,Aab E Hayat, Gul E Bakawali etc . In 1953 ,he performed as a cop in Ranjit Movietone’s Papi ,along with Raj Kapoor . With Dilip Kumar, he did a role which had comic shades in Leader. Shirin Farhad ,made by veteran filmmaker Aspi Irani ,was another movie in which his performance was much appreciated .

Mr P Kailash appeared in numerous movies made by Filmmakers like Shree Ram Bohra ,B K Adarsh and Filmistan . Maine Jeena Seekh Liya, Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ,Picnic ,Baba Sari Ladli (Rajasthani) ,Jekra Charanwa Me Lagale Paranwa (Bhoj Puri) ,Love and Murder ,were the movies , Mr P Kailash did for the said film makers. Versatile director Krishan Chopra (May God Bless His Soul), who died before completing his second movie ,gave him a lifetime role of a tyrannical landlord in Heera Moti which was based upon the heart warming story Do Bailon Ki Katha ,written by great writer Prem Chand . He brought alive the arrogant and heartless Zamindaar on the screen with his dynamic performance .

Krishan Chopra, impressed with the magnificent personality of Mr P Kailash, gave him an important role in his next movie Gaban ,which was completed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee ,after Mr Chopra passed away untimely. It was a sad coincidence that Mr P Kailash ,also did not live long .While on a visit to his birth place Multai, he suffered a massive heart attack and left for his heavenly abode on 23 May 1967 . Payal Ki Jhankaar, made by Filmistan and Thief of Baghdad by Mr Shree Ram Bohra were released later, after he had gone forever at the young age of 43 years, leaving his two daughters, one son and wife. P.Kailash acted in 43 films. His first film was Jai Hanuman-48 and the last released film was Irada-1971.

So, here is today’s 67 year old song by Asha Bhosle from this film….

Song-Sau haseenon mein koi ek haseen hota hai (Ham Bhi Kuchh Kam Nahin)(1958) Singer-Asha Bhosle, Lyricist- Sharki Bhopali, MD- S.D.Batish

Lyrics

aa aa aa

sau haseenon mein koi ee ee
ek haseen hota hai ae ae
phir bhi sarkaar
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai

sau haseenon mein koi ek haseen hota hai ae
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai

hum jise pyaar se dekhen
usey jeena aa jaaye
muskuraa den to bahaaron ko paseena aa jaaye
jaa musaahar(??) ka nasha yoon to haseen hota hai
jaa musaahar(??) ka nasha yoon to haseen hota hai
phir bhi sarkaar
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai

dekhne waalaa aa aa aa
jhalak dekh ke deewaana bane ae ae ae ae
shamaa bhee saamne aa jaaye
to parwaana bane
kehte hain
chaudhvin ka chaand haseen hota hai
kehte hain
chaudhvin ka chaand haseen hota hai
phir bhi sarkaar
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai
sau haseenon mein koi ek haseen hota hai ae
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai
phir bhi sarkaar
wo hum jaisa naheen hota hai
