Today’s song is the last song of the film Har Har Mahadev-1950. It was a Jayant Desai production film, a banner owned by the film’s director Jayant Desai.

Jayant Jhinabhai Desai was born in Surat, Gujarat,on 28-2-1909, in a well-to-do family. He graduated from Bombay University and entered the film line as an exhibitor in Surat. Later on he started writing Screen plays for London Films, Rangoon and then for Krishna and Sharada studios. He joined Chandulal Shah’s Ranjit Studios in 1929, as his assistant for the film ‘Rajputani’. Director Nandlal Jaswantlal Bhatt ( Nagin, Taj, Champakali etc) was another assistant in Ranjit studio.

When Nandlal left Ranjit to go to Europe, Jayant completed his film ‘Pahadi kanya-1930’. At Ranjit, Jayant directed 12 silent films. He was with Ranjit till 1943 and Directed 33 Talkie films, while in Ranjit. Some of these films were Char Chakram, Bhool Bhulaiya, Nadira, Toofanmail, College Girl, Matlabi Duniya, Toofani Toli, Billi ( a copy of a Hollywood film, based on P.G.Wodehouse’s novel ” A Damsel in Distress” ), Sant Tulsidas, Diwali, Shaadi, Chandni, Bhaktaraj, Tansen (with Saigal), Zaban etc.

After leaving Ranjit, Jayant Desai established his own studio, Jupiter Films Studio, Jayant Desai Productions and Hemlata Pictures. He also had exhibition interests in Hindmata and Star Theatres in Bombay’s Dadar area. In the 50s, he operated as a Distributor with his Jupiter films.

While in Ranjit,he had Directed K L Saigal in the film Tansen. Sardar Chandulal Shah had called Saigal on a contract of 60 days. Jayant completed Tansen in just 51 days. Kidar Sharma then used those 9 days to make a quicky- Bhanwara, with Saigal.

C.Ramchandra was with Jayant Desai for more than 3 years and gave 5 successful films. It was Jayant Desai who gave him the name C.Ramchandra for use in films. It was also Jayant Desai who was responsible for the rise of C.Ramchandra in a major way. It so happened….

After leaving Ranjit, Jayant started his own company. In his new company, Jayant had hired C.Ramchandra as a paid Composer on a salary of Rs. 300 pm. C Ramchandra gave music to many of his films like Zaban,Lalkar,Manorama, Chandragupta etc and all films became popular.C. Ramchandra was proud of his achievement. Under the banner Jayant Desai productions, one more Saigal film-Tadbir-45, with Suraiya in the lead was to be made.
One day CR heard a rumour that the great singer Saigal is coming to make a film here. CR became very excited that he would get an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But he got a shock when he heard that, not he, but one Lal Mohammed (assistant of Ghulam Hyder in Lahore) was being called for that assignment, C.Ramchandra not only was upset but felt hurt too. He went to Jayant Desai and said-
” My salary must be increased”
” How much ?”
” One Thousand Rupees per month”

Jayant was not ready for 1000. He offered a maximum of 600. He also told C Ramchandra that there was an opportunity to compose for Saigal, but C.Ramchandra was not ready to accept anything less than 1000.
Finally,C Ramchandra said,” Increase it to 1000 or else….”
Jayant Desai was furious. He asked,” Or else…What ?”
C.Ramchandra said,” Or else,I will quit”.
Without flapping an eyelid, Jayant Desai coolly said,” OK. Your account will be settled in an hour. Stop work and pack up.”

C.Ramchandra was stunned, but the arrow had already left the bow !

C.Ramchandra became jobless and also lost an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But his luck was strong. After a few days, Kavi Pradeep took him to Filmistan and he was appointed there on a salary of Rs. 1000 pm. In Filmistan, C.Ramchandra gave several Hit musicals like Safar, Shehnai, Nadiya ke paar, Shabnam, Samadhi, Sargam,Anarkali, Nastik etc. If Jayant Desai had not removed C.Ramchandra from his company, he would not have reached the heights of his fame and success later on.

Jayant Desai directed 65 films in all. His last film was Zamana Badal gaya-1961. He died in Bombay on 19-4-1976.

It is a natural phenomena that the offspring of a Horse will always be a Horse and similarly all animals give birth to their own species. Human beings also beget Human beings. But this similarity ends here only. The progeny of a Horse will always remain a Horse but in case of Humans, a Musician’s son will not necessarily become a Musician, nor a Lawyer’s son a Lawyer. Human beings have a developed mind, which can take decisions, learn things, have emotions and adopt avocations of its own choice. Yes,even this may be true to the careers or the professions one practices in life, but what about the likings, styles, looks and patterns of Life’s Philosophies ?

All these are certainly inherited from the parents, especially the father. Why Father ? Because for a child a Father is a Hero,an ideal and an Idol too,to follow. 0 to 5 is the age, according to Child psychologists, when the values and the habits take roots in the child. Maybe this is the reason why boys always try to emulate their father in their formative years.

Pause and think to yourself. Maybe you follow the patterns of shaving of your father,or have the same eating habits of your father or style of standing, folding hands or walking or even keeping or not keeping the Moustache ! Possibly this is the reason I developed a liking for Bhajans from my childhood. In our joint family of 20 people,a lot of Bhajans used to be heard, especially those of Bhagwan Shiv ji.,as it was our family Deity. Later, when my father built his own Bungalow,he even had a big Shiv mandir in the open space of our Yard. The religious atmosphere of the family also prompted me to see and enjoy Mythological films, especially for the Trick scenes in them.

Religious or Mythological films were very popular in India till about 1965-70. After that somehow, the religious films suddenly gave way to escapist popular entertaining and musical films. The religious films had their own captive, fixed and faithful audience. 1951 to 1960 was a peak/Golden period for Religious movies. In this period alone, 120 such films were released. This works out to One religious film every month for 10 continuous years. In olden days, big stars did not mind working in religious films and actors like Prithviraj Kapoor,Shobhana Samarth,Prem Adeeb,Meena kumari etc were seen in such films. Of course there were also some ‘Branded’ artistes specially for these films. They were, mahipal,Manhar Desai,Trilok kapoor,Nirupa Roy,Durga Khote etc etc.

There were 2 types of Religious films. One was based on stories from Ramayan and Mahabharat and the other was based on stories from various Puranas.

Festival of Mahashivaratri is the most important festival for the millions of devotees of Lord Shiva. The festival has been accorded a lot of significance in Hindu mythology. It says that a devotee who performs sincere worship of Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Shivratri is absolved of sins and attains moksha.

Festival of Mahashivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism. According to sacred scriptures, ritual worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratri festival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun pleases Lord Shiva the most. This fact is said to have been declared by Lord Shiva himself, when his consort Parvati asked him as to which ritual performed by his devotees pleases him the most.
Even till date, devotees of Lord Shiva perform the ritual worship of Shivratri with care and devotion. They observe day and night fast and give a sacred bath to Shiva Linga with honey, milk, water etc. Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on a Shivaratri as it is believed that worship of Lord Shiva with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of past sins. The devotee reaches the abode of Lord Shanker and lives there happily. He is also liberated from the cycle of birth and death and attains moksha or salvation.

Mahashivratri Festival is also considered to be an extremely significant festival by women. Married and unmarried women observe fast and perform Shiv Pooja with sincerity to appease Goddess Parvati who is also regarded as ‘Gaura’ – one who bestows marital bliss and long and prosperous married life. Unmarried women also pray for a husband like Lord Shiva who is regarded as the ideal husband.

I had seen this film,Har Har Mahadev-1950, not once but many times. It was full of trick scenes and It had become a cult film. Trilok Kapoor, who acted the part of lord Shiva was rumoured to have a real snake around his neck during the film shooting. Nirupa Roy who played the role of Uma, was quite scared of snakes and it became a problem. Finally,an artificial snake was used, when their joint shots were shot.

HAR HAR MAHADEV-1950 was produced and directed by Jayant Desai under the banner of Jayant Desai Production. With this one film alone Jayant Desai became a millionnaire in those days.

It was also the FIRST film where the pair of Trilok Kapoor and Nirupa Roy became a hit as Shankar-Parvati and they played this role in 6 subsequent films.

The film had songs written by Ramesh Shastri-who had written the famous song of BARSAT-Mera lal dupatta malmal ka.
His song in this film ‘Kankar kankar se main puchhun shankar mera kahan hai’ became a hit.It was sung by Geeta Dutt.

This is a story of the marriage of Lord Shiva and Uma, the daughter of Himalaya, at Midnight. This night is called Maha Shivaratri. The background of this marriage was – Tarakasur, the king of demons invades the land of gods, to avenge the insult meted out to his mother by Indra. Tarakasur wins the war and all Gods are kept in captivity-including the offender Indra.

Lord Vishnu and Bramhadev know, only Lord Shiva can defeat Tarakasur but he is in Tapascharya(Meditation). Kamdev is sent to lure Shiva from his meditation, but Shiva is so angry that, opening his Third Eye, he burns Kamdev. Now only Uma,the daughter of king Himalaya can save the world, Uma(Nirupa Roy) starts penance to propitiate Shiva(Trilok Kapoor).

Due to her earnest bhakti and devotion, Shiva relents and breaks his Meditation. Shiva and Uma get Married and later lord Shiva destroys Tarakasur, releasing all the Gods.

On this auspicious day of Mahashivratri, the marriage of Shiv-Parvati is solemnised at midnight.

The film Munimji has a very nice song depicting the marriage details.

Here is the last song from this film, sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali. It is a melodious song, which haunts you after you listen to it. With this song the film Har Har Mahadev-1950 gets YIPPEED. Enjoy the 75 year old song….
