The song in this post is from the movie ‘Rickshaawaalaa-1973’. I have no recollections of having watched this movie earlier. However, since the music of this film is composed by none other than Rahul Dev Burman, I wish to take up the songs from this movie. So far two songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. The music of this film is very good. But I think it was forgotten easily as the movie itself was not a successful movie of its time. This movie was a remake of a successful Tamil movie “Rickshawkaran”, which starred the superstar of Tamil Cinema M G Ramachandran. The Tamil movie was released on 29 May 1971, and It was a major commercial success, however its remake in Hindi could not achieve the same success and it turned out to be a disaster.

“Rickshaawalaa-1973” was directed by K. Sankar for ‘Sathya Movies, Madras’. It had Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Anwar Hussain, Sujit Kumar, Ranjeet, Mohan Choti, Sundar, Aashu, Mona, Jayakumari, Pran, Mala Sinha (in special appearance), Madhukar, M. Sial, Hameed, Prem Kumar, Prakash, Umesh Sharma, Swaraj Kumar, N.S. Bedi, Nazeer, Kiran, Vijaya Lakshmi, Kavita, Jamal Amrohi, Poornam Vishwanathan, Rajan, and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.08.1973. Story of this movie was by R.M. Veerappan who also produced this movie. Screenplay of ‘Rickshaawaalaa’ was written by K.A. Narayan, and dialogues of this movie were written by Akhtar Romani. Editing of this movie was done by K. Sankar, S. Sankunni and K. R. Kishna. While Randhir Kapoor played the title role of ‘Rickshaawaalaa’ in this movie, this movie was the first movie of actress Neetu Singh in a lead role. She had till then appeared in movies as a child actor with the name as Baby Sonia. Anand Bakshi wrote all the five songs for this movie and music was composed by R.D. Burman. The playback singers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle.

This song is the first song to appear in the movie. Following is the story till this song in the movie.

Madan (Anwar Hussain) runs the business of women trafficking, kidnapping women and throwing them into the flesh trade. Once his trusted accomplice Murli (Ranjeet) kidnaps a woman Lakshami and brings her to Madan. This woman is none other than the wife of one rickshaawaalaa Chander who also works for Madan, and does the brainwashing of the kidnapped girls/women to work for Madan. Chander revolts but is killed by Madan. Chander’s body is burned by Madan’s gang members. When Madan is leaving the spot of murder his car gets obstructed by another rickshaawaalaa Gopi (Randhir Kapoor), who is passing there on a bi-cycle. Raanee (child artiste) is the daughter of Chander who is under the care of the fellow rickshaw-puller friends of Chander. Gopi takes her to his home. Gopi decides to seek justice for Chander through law. Madan has his brother in law Kailash (Pran) who is also the famous criminal lawyer in the city. Knowing that Kailash will be dealing with this case for Madan, Gopi reaches to Kailash to request him for justice. However Kailash with his ‘skills’ get Madan released with ‘benefit of doubt’ as the body of the deceased was totally burnt and it could not be established that the body was of Chander whom Madan was accused of killing. While Madan and his gang-members celebrate his acquittal we have Gopi on the other hand trying to cheer up Munnee whom he found crying at home when he reaches there. The picturisation has Gopi and Munnee on one side, where Gopi (Randhir Kapoor) is singing this song and Raanee/Munnee with him on a rickshaw, on the other side we have visual of a ‘celebration party’ where we have Madan (Anwar Hussain) and his ‘delegates’ and a ‘club dancer’

There is an interesting conversation between Gopi and Raanee before the songs starts …

(Raanee crying )

lo
ab toone ronaa shuru kar diyaa hain
arey hanso meree raani beetiyaa
zindagee naam hain muskuraane kaa
ye duniyaawaale hai naa, sirf hansnewaale kaa saath dete hain aur
ronewaalon ko akelaa chhod dete hain
hmm mmmmm
?
arey ye baat to padhhe likhe naheen samajhte
tu kyaa samjhegee
abhee to toone sur ki shakal naheen dekhee(?)

maamaa kyun joke kar rahe ho 🙂 …..

This song composed by R.D. Burman has good music suitable for the above two contradictory situations, and this song is a nice hummable song growing on us if we listen to it repeatedly.

Let us enjoy this song in the voice of Kishore Kumar, with verses of Anand Bakshi.
There is a female voice in the song which is not identified and left un-credited. Also I am unable to identify the name of the child artiste there. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw light on the same please.
