In my last article on the Blog, I had discussed the film, ‘Birbal My Brother’ (1973) with a Hindustani classical bandish, ‘rang raliyaan karat sautan ke sang’, rendered by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Jasraj as jugalbandi in Raag Malkauns. In this article, I am presenting the same bandish rendered in Raag Malkauns by Asha Bhosle as a ‘filmy song’ without much of ornamentations. This one was from the film, ‘Khwaahish’ (2003) which was produced by Vivek Nayak under the banner of Perry Pictures and was directed by the debutant Govind Menon. The cast included Himanshu Malik, Mallika Sherawat, Shivaji Satam, Amrita Sathbai, Shahbaz Khan, Mahamud Babai etc. This was Mallika Sherawat’s first film in a lead role. The film was based on an English novel, ‘Love Story’ (1970) by Eric Segal, customised to the Indian setting.
Recently, I watched the film with some apprehension that it would be usual masala film with more prominence to the bold portrayal of Mallika Sherawat’s role than on the main theme of the novel, ‘Love Story’. The apprehension was based on some comments on the promos of the film which were released few days before the film’s release. It was said that the promos talked more about 17 kisses between film’s lead actors and covered some bold scenes than the crux of the story. The film’s director, Govind Menon, in an interview after the release of the film, admitted that this was deliberately done to get a good opening. While watching the film, I found that although the film did have some titillating scenes between the lead actors, it remained almost true to the story in the novel. The film majorly discusses the man-woman relationship during their courtship and the post-marriage adjustments to the likes and dislikes of each other for the young generation of the new millennium. Towards the end, it is on the strength of their love for each other that the couple could face bravely the emotional trauma arising out of her fatal disease.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Amar (Himanshu Malik) is in a garment store to buy a pyjama for him. But the salesman insists on selling the set of pyjama and kurta. There is some haggling over this issue when Lekha (Mallika Sherawat) comes to buy a kurta. However, they like different designs and another issue is how to split the price of the set. They haggle over it and finally the issue is solved and thus begin the friendship between Amar and Lekha albeit in a bickering way.
There is not much in common in Amar and Lekha. While Amar’s father (Shivaji Satam) is an industrialist, Lekha’s father runs a small poultry farm. Amar’s hobby is Go-Karting and Formula-1 driving in which he wants to make his professional career. Lekha has got herself trained in classical singing and wants to pursue this as a career. Amar is stubborn even with his father insofar as his career is concerned. Lekha on the other hand is a happy go lucky girl, frank and practical. The only common point of interest is that both like R D Burman’s music and both are going to become graduates in about 3-month time.
After their graduation examinations, Amar has still not made up his mind as to what next, he wants to pursue. He has no interest in his father’s business. By now Amar is in love with Lekha to such an extent that he has proposed her for the marriage bypassing the realities that his father, on account of the financial disparity between two families, will not agree for the marriage. Lekha, on the other hand, treads the marriage proposal cautiously because she is aware that Amar’s father may not agree for the marriage.
Amar accompanies Lekha on her summer vacation visit to her village and meets her father with the proposal of the marriage. Both Amar and Lekha’s father get along well and he agrees for the marriage. When Amar goes to his father with the marriage proposal, his father wants him to complete his MBA before getting married. Also, he does not reconcile to the financial and social disparity between the two families. Amar defies his father and gets married to Lekha in a low key ceremony in Lekha’s village. Amar’s father cut-offs his relationship with him.
The initial period of the marriage is financially hard for both of them. They shift in a chawl. While Amar continues his MBA, Lekha financially supports him by taking music classes. Lekha’s father also help them financially to the extent possible. In this process, Lekha gives up her dream of pursuing a career in classical singing. In the meanwhile, Lekha has developed a good acquittance with Amar’s mother because both of them are fans of R D Burman’s music. Through this link, both try to fix a meeting between Amar and his father for the reconciliation on the occasion of his father’s 60th birthday but Amar is not interested. On the contrary, he reprimands Lekha for developing contact with his parents.
After passing MBA, Amar gets a better job and moves to a better place to stay. Things are settling down for Amar and Lekha. However, with his high profile job, the couple do not get enough time to spend together. They think of starting a family. When they find that they are unable to conceive, they seek medical advice. After a series of medical tests, the doctor finds that Lekha has leukaemia which is on a terminal stage. Amar does not tell Lekha about her fatal disease. His aim is to keep her happy to enjoy her short life. He borrows money from his father without telling him the reason. With the money, Amar wants to take her abroad for vacations. But Lekha is against spending too much money and instead they go to Kerala for the vacation where they spend quality time with each other. During the vacation, she reveals that she is aware of her fatal disease. The emotional exchanges between them start. Amar also consult a U.S, Specialist who is unable to help him due to the terminal stage of the disease.
Eventually, Lekha is admitted in a hospital to minimise her discomfort due to pain. During this period, Amar and Lekha have a lots of emotional talks recalling their five years of togetherness which was their best years of life. During this period, she also wants Amar to fulfil a couple of her wishes like after her death, she should be cremated in an electric crematorium. She also takes a promise from Amar that he would get remarried within a year after her death.
After few hours, Lekha passes away. Amar’s parents, after getting the information about Lekha’s illness, visit the hospital to enquire about Lekha’s well-being. They meet Amar at the entrance of the hospital. His father assures all help to him. Amar reveals them that Lekha is no more. A guilt feeling hits Amar’s father and he apologises to him. Amar says to his father that those who love a person do not need to apologise. With these words, Amar breaks down in the arms of his parent. They ask him to come back home.
The film ends with Amar’s monologue that some desires (Khwaahish) get fulfilled and some remain unfulfilled. That is life.
The film had six songs written by Faiz Anwar which were set to music by Milind Sagar. I present the first song from the film, ‘rang raliyaan karat sautan ke sang’, a traditional bandish, to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Mallika Sherawat. Although the lyric of the song is attributed to Faiz Anwar, it is apparent that the lyrics of the song have retained almost all words of the traditional bandish.
As mentioned in the story of the film, Lekha (Mallika Sherawat) has been trained to be a Hindustani classical singer. She wants to pursue her hobby into a career as a concert singer. As a first step, Lekha arranges her Hindustani classical singing concert for her family and friends in which Amar (Himanshu Malik) and Lekha’s father (Mahamud Babai) joins. One can observe the boring reactions from some of the audience, a few of them leaving the concert halfway.
