Blog Day :

6158 Post No. : 19016

Today’s song is from the film Lalkar-1944.

This is my 1600th post on this Blog. This is the fastest century. From 1500 to 1600, it took me only 119 days ! For me, it is like a dream. I still can not believe that I wrote 1600 articles on this Blog alone. Add to it another 100+ articles on other blogs and sites. Add to it 10 printed books published. Add to it scores of books mentioning me and referring to my writings. Add to it countless friends I have gained in the last 12 odd years. Add to it…..

The list would be too long. When I look back, I wonder how all this happened. After retirement, generally people find it difficult to spend time. Here I was, sometimes I had to strive hard to manage time to cope up with my work. At the age of 85 years, I could do all the above, in addition to my work as an Independent Director on the Board of Directors of two major Pharma companies. For this I thank The Almighty and pray that He continues to bestow the required energy to me to go on further, till I am destined to be here.

Learning Computers at the age of 71 years and starting a new inning, totally unconnected to my earlier work and achieving new peaks in this field makes me a new Man !
Thank You God !

I received motivation and inspiration from great souls like Atul Besra ji, Harish Raghuwanshi ji, Rajni kumar Pandya ji, Surjit Singh ji, Shishir Krishna Sharma ji, A.K.Upadhyaya ji of songs of Yore, Sanjit Narwekar ji and many others to whom I bow in respect thanking them wholeheartedly. I was also lucky to get constant encouragement, appreciation and motivation from my family members, who felt proud of me. Thank you family !

In the journey of the last 13 years, I have devoted a lot of effort to dig out information on the unknown and the less known artists, films and songs of the past. I think my best contribution to the history of old films is about the ” SAME NAME CONFUSIONS “. I had found that this was one problem which troubled every student of film history (like me) and no work has been specifically done on solving this problem. My tireless efforts have clarified the SNC cases of about 120 film personalities so far.

Digging up History is a continuous process. None of the writers on old films were present when things took place in the 30’s and the 40’s. At least no one was in the age of understanding matters of films or writing about films. So, all historians have to depend on existing documents like old books, old papers and magazines and similar materials to get credible information. Since old information keeps on cropping up at several intervals, the film history keeps on updating itself. In some cases, new information proves the existing old information wrong. So sometimes old statements are proven wrong in view of the new evidence. Thus you will find that no book on film history is without a mistake.A MISTAKE TODAY WAS THE TRUTH TILL NEW INFORMATION NULLIFIED IT. It does not and should not reduce the credibility of the author in any way. Some of my own comments made in 2011 and 2012 were found to be wrong when new information became available. It happens to all. The readers must understand this.

In my last 13 years, I have written about hundreds of people, films and songs. In my Laptop, I have stored information of more than 2600 people and films. In the last 1600 posts here, I have never written a post without giving some information. I feel the reader must gain something when he spends time reading my post. I don’t claim that my posts had no mistakes…they had, but never intentionally. I also make it a point to credit the source whenever I have taken information from somebody or somewhere. It is possible that I forgot sometimes but never knowingly. I do not feel ashamed to accept my mistakes. A mistake is a mistake, anyway. I never wrote on popular and well known artists like Dilip, Raj , Dev, AB, Meenakumari etc etc. I hope I have always given something new to readers in my posts.

Thank you Atul ji, Sudhir ji, my friends in the ATULITE group, and my co-travellers on this journey.

So, what’s next ?

I can only repeat the verse of Robert Frost………..

The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
and miles to go before I sleep
and miles to go before I sleep……

As far as the film Lalkar -1944 is concerned, I have no clue about its storyline or other aspects, except that C.Ramchandra was its Music Director. Today’s song is a special song in the sense that one of the singers of this duet is REWASHANKAR MARWADI – a well known singer and Music Director for the 30’s decade. I am listening to him for the first time and I feel he is making his Debut on this Blog. Most readers may not have even heard his name. Not much Biographical information about him was available.

Rewashankar Marwadi had acted in today’s film Lalkaar-1944. I tried very hard to get some information about Rewa Shankar Marwadi, who was an actor, lyricist, singer and also music director in the 1930s and 1940s. However I could not get anything concrete. Anyway I found a note on this multi talented artist of the early era, written by Shri Dhananjay Naniwadekar aka Nani, on the old RMIM forum, some 15 years ago and adapted by me for this article.

Some of Ranjit Movietone’s earliest talkie films had music by Ustad Jhande Khan. Next came the trio of Banne Khan, Ganga Prasad Pathak and Rewa Shankar Marwari. None of that music was ever released on 78 rpm records. From 1938-39, the great duo of Gyan Dutt and Khemchand Prakash took over the charge of Ranjit’s music, later to be joined by Bulo C Rani. It was only around 1938 that Ranjit started releasing its film music on 78-rpm records.

Rewa Shankar Marwari’s association with Ranjit Films and films produced or directed by ex-Ranjit hand Jayant Desai continued in the
1940s. While it is a pleasant surprise that imdb.com has a page for an obscure name like ‘Rewashankar Marwadi’ at all, it is not surprising
that his filmography has been put together for the site by people who are far from competent at that sort of thing. He acted in 27 films, till 1955, sang 12 songs in 9 films and gave music to 21 films from ‘Veer Babruwahan’ (1934) to ‘Matrubhoomi’ (1949). After 1949 only, he started acting in films.

Rewashankar Marwadi and Gangaprasad Pathak gave music together for Gunsundari- 1934 as well as the film Raat ki Raani-35. Rewashankar Marwadi then made a pucca pair with composer Banne Khan and this pair gave music to 12 films, as a pair. ( Barrister’s wife-35, College girl-35, Qeemati aansoo-35, Noor-e-watan-35, Chalaak chor-36, Raj Ramani-36, Dil ka daaku-36, Sipahi ki sajani-36, Matlabi Duniya-36, Lehri lala-36, Ghazi Diler-36 and Mitti ka putla-37 ). In my opinion, they should be considered the first pair of MDs as well as Trend setters and NOT Husnlal-Bhagatram. Of course the number of films the H-B team did was more ( 52), but that is because after 1935, the speed of making films increased. More films were made in the 40s and the 50s than in the 30s. Moreover many composers left for Pakistan in the late 40s, so more films for less composers were available. Numbers aside, but lack of enough knowledge about the early films and artistes has led to much injustice to the Pioneers, for sure !

Film Lalkar-1944 was made by Jayant Desai productions, Bombay and it was directed by Jayant Desai himself. Jayant Jhinabhai Desai was born in Surat,Gujarat,on 28-2-1909, in a well-to-do family. He graduated from Bombay University and entered the film line as an exhibitor in Surat. Later on he started writing Screen plays for London Films, Rangoon and then for Krishna and Sharada studios. He joined Chandulal Shah’s Ranjit Studios in 1929, as his assistant for the film ‘Rajputani’. Director Nandlal Jaswantlal Bhatt ( Nagin,Taj,Champakali etc) was another assistant in Ranjit.

When Nandlal left Ranjit to go to Europe, Jayant completed his film ‘ Pahadi kanya-1930 ‘. At Ranjit, Jayant directed 12 silent films. He was with Ranjit till 1943 and Directed 33 Talkie films, while in Ranjit. Some of these films were Char Chakram, Bhool Bhulaiya, Nadira, Toofanmail, College Girl, Matlabi Duniya, Toofani Toli, Billi ( a copy of a Hollywood film, based on P.G.Wodehouse’s novel ” A Damsel in Distress” ), Sant Tulsidas, Diwali, Shaadi, Chandni, Bhaktaraj, Tansen (with Saigal), Zaban etc.

After leaving Ranjit, Jayant Desai established his own studio, Jupiter Films Studio, Jayant Desai Productions and Hemlata Pictures. He also had exhibition interests in Hindmata and Star Theatres in Bombay’s Dadar area. In the 50s, he operated as a Distributor with his Jupiter films.

While in Ranjit, he had Directed K L Saigal in the film Tansen. Sardar Chandulal Shah had called Saigal on a contract of 60 days. Jayant completed Tansen in just 51 days. Kidar Sharma then used those 9 days to make a quicky- Bhanwara, with Saigal.

C.Ramchandra was with Jayant Desai for more than 3 years and made 5 successful films. It was Jayant Desai who prompted him to take the name C.Ramchandra for use in films. It was also Jayant Desai who was responsible for the rise of C.Ramchandra in a major way. It so happened….

After leaving Ranjit, Jayant started his own company. In his new company, Jayant had hired C.Ramchandra as a paid Composer on a salary of Rs. 300 pm. C Ramchandra gave music to many of his films like Zaban,Lalkar,Manorama, Chandragupta etc and all films became popular.C. Ramchandra was proud of his achievement. Under the banner Jayant Desai productions, one more Saigal film-Tadbir-45, with Suraiya in the lead was to be made.

One day CR heard a rumour that the great singer Saigal is coming to make a film here. CR became very excited that he would get an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But he got a shock when he heard that, not he, but one Lal Mohammed (assistant of Ghulam Hyder in Lahore) was being called for that assignment, C.Ramchandra not only was upset but felt hurt too. He went to Jayant Desai and said-
” My salary must be increased”
” How much ?”
” One Thousand Rupees per month”
Jayant was not ready for 1000. He offered a maximum of 600. He also told CR that there was an opportunity to compose for Saigal, but C.Ramchandra was not ready to accept anything less than 1000.
Finally,C Ramchandra said,” Increase it to 1000 or else….”
Jayant Desai was furious. He asked,” Or else…What ?”
C.Ramchandra said,” Or else,I will quit”.
Without flapping an eyelid, Jayant Desai coolly said,” OK. Your account will be settled in an hour. Stop work and pack up.”
C.Ramchandra was stunned, but the arrow had already left the bow !

C.Ramchandra became jobless and also lost an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But his luck was strong. After a few days ,Kavi Pradeep took him to Filmistan and he was appointed there on a salary of Rs. 1000 pm. In Filmistan, C.Ramchandra gave several Hit musicals like Safar, Shehnai, Nadiya ke paar, Shabnam, Samadhi, Sargam,Anarkali, Nastik etc. If Jayant Desai had not removed C.Ramchandra from his company, he would not have reached the heights of his fame and success later on.

Jayant Desai directed 65 films in all. His last film was Zamana Badal gaya-1961. He died in Bombay on 19-4-1976.

Let us now enjoy this 81 year old duet by Rewashankar Marwadi and my favourite MD C. Ramchandra aka Chitalkar….

Arun Ji,

Thanks for this milestone post. Your latest century is almost run a ball. Congratualtions for all the good work in this field post your formal ‘retirement’. I pray Almighty to bestow on you many many more years of active enjoyable life. Please continue to inform us thru your posts.

As for interesting tid bits in this post , they are many for me to repeat. I was amused by Kidar Sharma utilising 9 days left out of 60 contracted days with K L Saigal. I also note who you have found to be first MD pair, before even Husnlal-Bhagatram. There are many more interesting pieces of info in this post.

Thanks & Regards

Arunji,

My congratulations on your impressive achievement.

Thanks also for mentioning me in acknowledgements. I feel emboldened to reiterate my suggestion in public which I have been conveying in private: You have mentioned several hundreds of names of vintage era artists – actors, singers, music directors, directors, producers. Please think about compiling your notes on them by cutting and pasting and produce a book like “Glossary of names of Vintage Era film artists”. It would be very easy to put it in alphabetical order. Such books are quite common for epics like Mahabharat, which has similarly several hundred of characters.

AK ji,

Thanks for your kind words.

Happy to tell you that your suggestion is already implemented and the following books are published by Mr. Sheo Khetan. Out of the 9 books on this topic (with photos), I am the co-author (on his request) for the last 5 books (from part 5 to part 9), though I contributed to earlier parts also, but without my name as a co-author.

Arunji,

I have glanced through some of these volumes. My impression is they are not packed with as much information as you commonly do in your articles. Plus, I was looking for a single volume. But I agree they do serve some purpose.

Arun ji,

Heartiest congratulations for your 1600th post on the Blog.

Your immense contributions in the sphere of vintage Hindi films – both in terms of articles, and books are well known among the connosiers of such Hindi films. However, it may be a lesser known fact about you for many that your are most sought after as a ‘consultant’ on subject concerning the vintage Hindi cinemas – probably from morning till your good night time.

You are a selfless distributor of the immense knowledge of your domain which I am sure you will continue to do so in the days to come.

Sadanand ji,

I am simply overwhelmed with your kind words about me and my work. Do I really deserve these, I wonder !

As far as the point of distributing the knowledge, my view is, I was not born with this knowledge. I got all this from earlier works and with systematic storage and memory, I am redistributing it because I do not want it to get lost with my exit. With 85 years behind me, I am a man in a hurry !

Thanks again. Such appreciation makes my day and I am happy that experts like you acknowledge what I am doing.

The episode quoted in this blog was rather well known pertaining to composer C Ramachandra and perhaps this happens to be one of his earliest films. However, it is quite a pleasant reading about these stories of the erstwhile film personalities !

😀 Sir ji,

It seems my iPad is playing mischievous. Five times, I tried to comment but somehow it got erased mid-way.

Anyway, I congratulate you on your achievement of 1600 posts. Wow! Amazing! Incredible! Superb!

But it has made me greedy. Will it be too much to ask you to continue to regale your admirers with 400 more posts so as to reach the milestone of 2000 by the end of the current year?
Judging by your recent prolific output, you look like batting in T20 style. There are still more than 200 days left in this year so it works out to just 2 per day. You are only 85 years young and, by the grace of God, getting younger and stronger every day. ( Touch Wood!

Once again, thank you very very much, Sir, for your untiring efforts in bringing to us the rare facts and facets of Hindi Film Industry. Your encyclopaediac depth and breadth of knowledge has rightly been appreciated and acknowledged by not only ASAD but also by many other aficionados like SOY.

Respectfully,
