Hullo Atuldom

“Sunny” (1984) was produced by Amarjeet (known for producing the classic ‘Hum Dono’ in 1961 & ‘Gambler’ in 1971) with Bobby Tapia (Amarjeet’s brother) as co-producer. Raj Khosla was the director (I am sure I need not list the movies this director had entertained us with). “Sunny” had music by R. D. Burman & Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The playback singers used were Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar and Anand Kumar C.

The film had six songs of which the blog has the following

Song Date of post
Aur kya ahad e wafa hote hain 8 December 2010
Jaane kyaa baat hai 5 March 2013

Both the songs posted are multi-version songs. ‘Aur kyaa ahad-e-wafaa hote hain’ had Suresh Wadkar & Asha Bhosle singing the two versions (on screen Sharmila Tagore lip-synced the female version).
‘Jaane kya baat hai’ also had two versions- first time Sharmila Tagore sings it, (that version is heard by Sunny on his dad’s tape recorder) then Amrita Singh sings as part of a television program.
So I think that makes it 4 songs from the film on the blog (don’t know if videos of all the versions have been posted, though)

“Sunny” had the same storyline as Raj Khosla’s previous hit film “Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki”. That is, Waheeda Rehman played a rich woman whose husband-Dharmendra- is in love with Sharmila Tagore a singer. Sharmila Tagore becomes pregnant with Dharmendra’s baby. He dies before the child is born. Waheeda Rehman comes to know of the existence of the second love in her husband’s life and decides that the child will be hers. (A difference as compared to Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki).

The child grows up to be Sunny Deol who inherits his father’s love for music & also falls in love with Amrita Singh who happens to be the niece of Sharmila Tagore (to add to the displeasure of Waheeda Rehman). The film comes to “the end” with Sunny discovering his biological mother. Waheeda Rehman discovers that Sharmila had actually given up her love for Dharmendra as she didn’t want to wreck his family & that Dharmendra was sad due to this at the time of his death. Waheeda Rehman cannot digest the truth so she commits suicide.

The trigger for this post was a YouTube link that Sudhirji shared last evening. Here it is. This video is a tribute to filmmaker Raj Khosla. The video speaks of the body of work this producer/ director had against his name. It speaks of the various genres he fed us with. The video also gives information about Ludhiana being his birthplace, his coming to Mumbai to become a singer. He had sung a song under the baton of Sardar Malik in 1947 before he began his journey as an assistant in ‘Baazi’, ‘Jaal’, ‘Baaz’, ‘Aar Paar’. His first film as director was ‘Milap’; interesting that all his initial films were with Dev Anand, all of them with the protagonist playing grey-character. ‘Milap’ was followed by ‘C.I.D.’; ‘Kala Pani’; ‘Solva Saal’; ‘Bambai Ka Babu’. There was a shift towards dacoit films in ‘Kachche Dhaage’ & ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’. In between, we had some family stories (Do Raaste), plain mystery (‘Woh Kaun Thi! etc). His final films were romantic dramas -‘Sunny’, ‘Naqaab’. His films were known to have ear-pleasing music with atleast one or two songs of the folk-song variety. It would have been his 100th birthday today.

It is with the song in this post that Sunny Deol makes his entry in the film. It establishes his character as fun- swimming- music loving and respectful towards his mother.
Character actor Vikas Anand is the leader of the street-singer group. I found an interesting trivia about this actor recently:- his daughter is married to the son of another well-known character actor Yunus Parvez. Also, Vikas Anand was born Shan-E-Ilahi and has been in the film industry since 1973 & was last seen in a 2019 film. But he is mostly remembered as the ‘jailer assigned the duty of bringing Jai & Veeru by Thakur’
