The song in this post is a nice composition, albeit a lesser heard song that has been forgotten alongwith its movie which had failed at the box office. This movie is ‘Jaan E Jaan’ or ‘Nikammaa’. This movie was launched in the mid-seventies with the title ‘Nikammaa’, but it got delayed and after completion it was finally released in the year 1983 with the title ‘Jaan E Jaan’. If one watches the movie for first fifteen minutes one can find why it was titled as ‘Nikammaa’ earlier, because its hero Raju, in-spite of being graduate doesn’t have any job and even if somebody recommends him for a job he loses it because he is naive and a simpleton(read stupid).
One can read a ‘mini-review’ of this movie on Memsaab’s blog. I am reproducing a very brief text from Memsaab’s blog about this movie as given below.
For the first half of the movie Neetu plays a rich little suicidal (she thinks she has cancer and only has months to live) girl who hires unemployed, working class Randhir to kill her. It’s nobler/braver, you see, to “defeat” death by taking it in your hands rather than doing something sensible like consulting with doctors to see if there might be some treatments/cures. Anyway, she spends the second half of the film trying to not fall victim to an elaborate, sick revenge plot concocted by deranged, homicidal Ajit. Ajit becomes unhinged when his only child (a young Gufi Paintal) kills himself over his unrequited love for Neetu. He of course blames Neetu for not loving his son back and is determined to make her pay for her “crime.” Neetu and Randhir fall in love in the midst of all of it, because what could be more romantic than this plot?”
‘Jaan E Jaan-1983’ was directed by Ramesh Behl for ‘Manoranjan movies’. Mandhir Sial was the producer of this movie. The cast of this movie had Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Ranjeet, Ajit, and Bindu. They were supported by Iftekhar, Lalita Kumari, Gulshan Bawra, Jagdish Raj, with Sunder, Tun, Hangama, Mrs Mistry, Vishwamitra, Mamaji, Pandurang, Ramesh, Parvez, Darshan, Rajkumar, Deepak Raj, Mushtaq Merchant, Prakash Mishra, and others. Paintal and Satyen Kappu had a special appearance in this movie.
Story and screenplay for ‘Jaan E Jaan’ was written by Hamayun Mirza. Nand Kumar was the chief editor for this movie and he was assisted by Sunder Shetty.
This movie has five songs written by Gulshan Bawra and composed by R.D Burman. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi were the playback singers for this movie.
The situation of the today’s song is this-Meena (Neetu Singh) decides to kill herself after celebrating her birthday. It is her birthday party where Raju who by now has fallen in love with Shalini wants to prevent her from committing suicide. Meena is supposed to consume the poison (cyanide) brought for her by none other than Raju only. But before that the celebrations must end and we have this song where Raju (Randhir Kapoor) sings in the party. Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, and many others are visible in the picturisation.
Let us now enjoy this wonderful song, which I vaguely recall to have watched and heard for the first time on ‘Chitrahaar’ on ‘Doordarshan’ during 1983-1984.

Song-Koi shamaa sheeshe kee laayaa (Jaan e Jaan)(1983) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Gulshan Baawra, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
ye din to hai mubaarak
is din ko naam kyaa doon
mushkil mein pad gayaa hoon
tujhe kaun see ee duaa doon
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee laayaa
koyee peetal kaa parwaanaa
do nainon kaa maaraa le ke
aayaa dil kaa nazraanaa
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee laayaa
koyee peetal kaa parwaanaa
do nainon kaa maaraa le ke
aayaa dil kaa nazraanaa
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee laayaa aa
anmol jeewan kaa har pal haseen hogaa
aajaa
jalenge mil ke
ho o ulfat kee raahon mein
chaahat kee baahon mein
armaan
khilenge dil ke ae
pyaar duaa hai
pyaar dawaa hai
pyaar ko yoon naa thhukraanaa
do nainon kaa maaraa le ke
aayaa dil kaa nazraanaa
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee laaya aa
parwaane kee zindagee to rahegee sadaa hee ee
shamaa ke bas mein
ho o deewaane ko bin jalaaye pighal hee na jaanaa
nibhaanaa rasmein
dekh shuroo hone se pehle
khatm na ho jaaye afsaanaa
do nainon kaa maaraa le ke
aayaa dil kaa nazraanaa
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee laayaa
koyee peetal kaa parwaanaa
do nainon kaa maaraa le ke
aayaa dil kaa nazraanaa aa
koyee shamaa sheeshe kee ee laayaa
