Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14
I have covered Mukesh’s songs composed by Sharda in my previous post.
I have also tried to cover many aspects of her career, but a few more details remain. A lot can be written about her association with Shankar and the various gossips and stories. But then, what is also known is that Sharda never revolted or reacted to these. She continued her life and career with whatever she came across. As such, a thought ran through my mind that it is better to stick to facts and statistics rather than the personal lives of artists.
We all have our likes and dislikes. I am not particularly fond of Sharda’s voice. But, then in many of her songs there is this unconventional, distinctive childish texture in her voice. In many songs that she sang this was a welcome change and did manage to capture the attention of music lovers. In an era where heroines were evolving into more mature roles and free expressions, such a voice suited their antics on the screen.
Coming to today’s short post, I was under the impression that Mukesh and Sharda must have sung quite a few songs for Shankar Jaikishan and for other composers also. However, I was surprised that the tally is just half a dozen including one excluded from the movie. And, Shankar Jaikishan is the only composer for whom they sang together.
Here is the table:-
| S. No | Name of the song | Movie (Year of release) $ | Lyricist |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chale jaanaa zaraa thahro | Around the world (1967) | Hasrat Jaipuri |
| 2 | Duniya ki sair kar lo | Around the world (1967) | Shailendra |
| 3 | Duniya isi ka naam hai | Duniya (1968) | S H Bihari |
| 4 | Tum pyaar se dekho | Sapnon Ka Saudaagar (1968) | Shailendra |
| 5* | Woh pari kahaan se laauun | Pehchaan (1970) | Verma Malik |
| 6# | Gaao gaao jhoom ke | Mera Naam Joker(1970) | Shailendra @ |
$ Shankar Jaikishan are the composers for all the 5 movies in above table
# Involves Suman Kalyanpur along with chorus.
# not included in the film.
@ not confirmed.
The first 5 songs are extremely popular to this day and I don’t think they warrant any description. Just the name of the song is enough to remember the naïve but unflappable voice of Sharda.
Since most songs of Mukesh are covered on the blog, my table invariably have links to the name of the songs so that it is easy for readers to visit the post. Also, while preparing the tables, I make it a point to go through the posts as well as the comments therein to see, if I can enrich my knowledge.
In such routine, for S. No 5, I was in for a big surprise in the comments section and comment no 5 specifically.
None other than Sharda herself has made a comment to the post on June 3, 2011, at 1:08 PM and I reproduce the same here.
All stories in India must have a happy ending, meaning the hero & heroine should get married. So in order to give this song a happy ending I have added this following verse to this song ..
ye hai top model ladki
Paris hilton jaisi phadki
Dekh gore gore gal
Dekh blonde blonde bal
Ten thousand dollar kutta
Iski bagalme hi reheta
Ye jahan jahan jaye
Wahan dhoom mach jaye
mukesh
Na chahiye mujhe paris
Multi millionair ki waaris
Mai Babitase shadi karoonga
Ye Gangaramki samajhme ayi
Sharda
For some reasons, it was completely missed out by readers and there is no reply to her comment. I am not sure if she has commented on any other song on the blog. As she was good in lyric writing too, she has added a few lines in continuation to the released song just for fun sake.
And, Paris Hilton of all the names who was born eleven years after this movie was released. 😊
Of course, the comment was made in 2011 and her name would have been added to suit with “blonde blonde bal “.
Coming to S No 6, it is an excluded song from Mera Naam Joker (1970). The film was of infinite duration and countless songs. One duet of Mukesh with Lata also remains elusive.
Sharda recorded 3 songs for this movie and all were excluded. She had one solo and two duets with Mahendra Kapoor and Mukesh respectively. Luckily all 3 songs are available on the net and for obvious reasons, I take up her duet with Mukesh in this post.
The duet has lots of Simi Garewal’s guffaws to the extent that one finds it difficult to listen to the song fully. The composition surprisingly is mediocre.
Considering the popularity of songs in the film, I suppose it was the right decision to exclude this particular duet.
Next, I am planning a standalone post on Sharda. I don’t have many expectations out of it but let me see if I can cover some more aspects of her songs and career.

Mukesh was the preferred singer for several composers during this period and he excelled in background songs just like Rafi and it is a well known fact that almost whatever he sang irrespective of who the composer is was a hit!
