“Imaan-1974” was directed by Padmanabh for Gurudutt Films Combine, Bombay. It is a social genre movie. It was produced by Atmaram (Gurudutt’s brother). The cast of this movie includes Sanjeev Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Bhagwan, Anwar Hussain, Satyen Kappu, Keshto Mukherjee, Murad, Krishnakant, Bhushan Tiwari, Viju Khote, Mohan Choti, Asha Potdar, Aarti, Johny Walker, Rajan Kapoor, Shivraj, Radheshyam, Narmada Shankar, Ramlal, Darshan, Mamaji, Nazeer Kashmiri, Kedar Sehgal and others. This movie has five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were composed by R.D. Burman. The singers for the songs in this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey.
While covering a song from this movie earlier, I had mentioned that “Imaan-1974” is a nice movie to watch at least for the sake of Sanjeev Kumar’s performance, where we find him playing double roles of Madhav and Lakhan. Madhav is an honest and benevolent person while Lakhan is a crook. Who wins and how is what we have to watch in this movie!!
The music of this movie is also nice. We have some very good songs in the movie. The songs of this movie didn’t get much popularity except the song arre kaise mitti ke maadho se paalaa padaa which incidentally was also the first song to be posted on the blog. Tthree songs from this movie have been covered on the blog.
This movie ‘Imaan-1974’ starts with a court-room scene where Madhav (Sanjeev Kumar) is being trialed for a theft of medicines. He is found guilty and sent to jail as punishment. He is released early because of his good behaviour and the Welfare Officer of Jail has made arrangements for his livelihood. The arrangement is a grocery shop where Madhav is supposed to start his business in the village Sonpur. On the way to the village Madhav meets Imli (Leena Chandavarkar) a village belle who sells parrots with a bird cage. She also is a habitual thief and keeps stealing things from shops around. After initial ‘nok-jhonk’ Imli and Madhav start getting warm to each other. Imli lives in a banjaaraa camp near to the village with her father (actor Bhagwan) who is habitual drinker.
That brings us to the song situation of the song under discussion. Madhav is supposed to visit Goa to bring grocery stock for his shop before Diwali festival. The village belle insists on accompanying him which Madhav agrees to. After reaching Goa, while Madhav is getting on with the task at hand the girl also gets busy in the activities of stealing things from various shops. However, she is caught red-handed, and all the shopkeepers want her to be handed over to police. But Madhav comes to the rescue of Imli by compensating the shopkeepers (crockery shop, jeweler shop) for their damages and also returns back their stolen belongings. Madhav, angry with her, give her Rs.20/- for bus fare and asks her to leave for the village, but she climbs into the truck of Madhav instead. The driver of the truck (Viju Khote) cannot drive without being drunk. Unable to get drunks before the journey starts, he stops the truck on the way to get drunk. When Madhav gets down from the truck he hears the sound of the parrot, so he checks the truck and he finds Imli hiding there . Madhav asks Imli to get down and that is when this takes place.
