Today’s song is from the film Badi maa-1945.Don’t go by the film’s name.It is not a family drama, involving 2 mothers – Badi Maa and Chhoti Maa. Here the word Badi Maa is used for ‘Our Motherland’. It is a love story filmed on the background of the II World War in a Nondescript town.

The film was made by Prafull Pictures, Bombay, owned by Master Vinayak -father of actress (Baby) Nanda.

It is said that “Laxmi and Saraswati can not live together”. In the case of Master Vinayak it was very true. He was an artist and an expert in his art -acting and direction, but when it came to handling money and business, he was not successful.

Initially, Vinayak was with Prabhat Film Co.. He left it and started his own outfit ” Huns Pictures” in partnership with Baburao Pendharkar and Cameraman Pandurang Naik. This was in 1936. Unfortunately his film “Jwaala”-1938 was a resounding Flop. Despite making 3 Comedy films- Bramhachari-38, Brandi ki Botal-1939 and Ghar ki rani-1940, the company could not salvage the damage done by the heavy loss due to the film ‘Jwala’-1938 and Huns Pictures was closed down.

He started a new company – ‘Navyug Chitrapat’, along with the famous Marathi writer, P.K.Atre, which became a Public Limited company with shares for the common man. After the first film itself, Atre left the company with Vanmala and started his own ‘Atre Pictures’. After 4 films, Vinayak also left the company and started his own ” Prafull Pictures”, Bombay in 1942.

Here too he incurred losses and to come out of it, he made the film “Badi Maa’-1945, which was a Propaganda Film or ‘War effort film’, in order to gain from the government concessions. Unfortunately, just after this film was released, the II World War ended in August 1945. After making 2 more films, Master Vinayak died on 19-8-1947, just 4 days after India’s freedom on 15 th August 1947.

1945 was the year when the devastating II World War ended and the film industry heaved a sigh of relief. Many irksome regulations were relaxed. There was no force now to make Propaganda films for war, no shortage of Raw Film and plenty of Finance available through black money , generated during the war times. However, the year saw only 73 Hindi films made.

One of the most successful and famous film directors of Hindi films – Bimal Roy had a beginning in 1945. He was the director of the Bangla film “Udayer Pathe”, based on the story by Jyotirmoy Roy. It was remade in Hindi as ” Humrahi”. Both versions became Hit films. Thus a cameraman and editor Bimal Roy emerged as a big name in Hindi films. He got this opportunity as New theatres, Calcutta had dried up with its ace and famous directors, who left the company and had marched towards Bombay, even when NT was downhill. This film was also noteworthy because Tagore’s ” Jan Gana Mana” was used in the film Humrahi-1945, which later on became India’s National Anthem (though it was written by Tagore to please and welcome King George V, on his visit to India in 1911).

Zeenat was another film whose music became popular, especially the All Women qawwali ” Aahen na bhari”. Shashikala and Shyama faced the camera for the first time in this song.

Noorjehan’s “Village Girl” was a Hit, due to Shyamsunder’s melodious songs. Mohd. Rafi started his playback from this film with G.M.Durrani. Earlier he had sung a song in a chorus in film pehle Aap and few Punjabi films.

Lata Mangeshkar’s first Hindi song in a Hindi film was in the film ” Badi Maa’.

Mukesh also sang his first playback in Pahli Nazar.

Saigal’s first film in Bombay-Tadbir was made by Jayant Desai.

2 Films on King Humayun were made. one by Mehboob was Humayun and the other was Ek Din Ka Sultan by Sohrab Modi.

Other successful films were Laila majnu, Lakha Rani (Guru Dutt was the Choreographer in this film), Moorti, Panna Dai, Phool (K.Asif), Chaand Chakori etc.

Devika Rani got married to Russian Painter- Roerich, left Bombay Talkies and settled in Himachal Pradesh, shifting to Bangalore after a few years.

Film Badi Maa -1945 was directed by Master Vinayak. The music director was Datta Korgaonkar, a diehard fan of Nurjahan. The cast of the film included Nurjahan, Ishwarlal, Yakub, Jog, Salvi, Meenakshi, Sitara, Leela Mishra, Damuanna malvankar etc. Lata mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle also had small roles in this film. Lata sang her First Hindi song in a Hindi film here.

The story of the film Badi Maa-45 was written by V.S.Khandekar. In those days there were Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi and Marathi writers with almost all film companies to assist in stories and dialogues. V. S. Khandekar was a very popular and famous writer in Marathi.
