In this post I am presenting a song from the 1973 movie ‘Raaja Raani’.

“Raaja Raani” was directed by Sachin Bhowmick. He was also the writer of this movie.

Sachin Bhowmick (17 July 1930– 12 April 2011) was mainly a writer (story and screenplays) for many movies in Hindi. ‘Raaja Raani’ was the only movie that he directed. The producer of ‘Raaja Rani’ was Jagdish Kumar, and it was presented by J. Omprakash.

The cast of ‘Raaja Raani’ had Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Raj Mehra, Iftekhar, David, Suresh, Brahm Bharadwaj, Asit Sen, Altaaf, Naaz, Dulari, Praveen Pal, Ravikant, Madhup Sharma, Kanu Rai, Uma Dutt, Ratna, Ashok Saxena, Master Manoj, Master Chiku, Baby Subiya, Surender Shore, Indrani Mukherjee, V.K. Sharma (new discovery) and many others.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant. Editing was done by Pratap Dave.

This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 15.01.1973. This movie had seven songs, all written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman.

Two songs from this movie ‘Jab andheraa hotaa hai’ and ‘Main ek chor tu meri raanee’ made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year 1973 and they stood at number ten and twenty-one respectively.

So far, four songs from this movie have been covered on this blog. The other two songs are ‘Haan to main kyaa kah rahaa thhaa’ (which too is a well-known song where Rajesh Khanna has some dialogues in the song and Mukesh & Lata are the singers), and ‘Phir aankh se aansoo barse’ in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar.

The songs from this movie are nice to listen to, even though only a few become well-known songs. The songs have good poetry by Anand Bakshi. All songs fit well in the story of this movie. I had not watched this movie earlier, but now I have watched the part of this movie till today’s song. I particularly like the song ‘Jab andheraa hotaa hai’ that gets played played with variations in the background from time to time.

Here is a brief about this movie till today’s song situation in the movie.

A widowed mother (Indrani Mukherjee) needs money for her child (a son) who is seek and needs medicines, but the mother does not have money to buy medicines. She goes to her master to request money. The master asks her to become his mistress. She assures him about coming to him in the evening but finally commits suicide leaving being the cured child but orphaned now.

The child (Raja) grows on streets stealing things and growing into adult (Rajesh Khanna) as a professional thief. And thus, he is caught by Police time to time, who put him behind the bars. But every time after the crime and punishment Raja continues with his ‘profession’ for his survival and helping his friend Tony who is addicted to alcohol.

Raja often prowls at night to find suitable place to break-in and steal jewellery/cash from there. During one such attempt he enters into a house where a wedding is supposed to take place. Raja finds a letter, which is by the groom to his father, that he could not marry the girl whom his father has fixed his marriage with, as he didn’t like her. Meanwhile when Raja is still in the room the groom’s father knocks the door and asks him to come soon as the priest is waiting for marriage formalities. As the father of the groom threatens to break the door Raja gets himself ready with for the marriage hiding his face behind the garlanded turban. The marriage function gets over and the bride is Nirmala (Sharmila Tagore).

Raja leaves the place immediately after the marriage and Police is also following him. Nirmala is left behind shattered & devastated. Soon, the parents of the groom (Iftekhar & Dulari) come to know about this. At the same time police informs the parents i.e. Iftekhar & Dulari that their son Suresh (the groom) had an accident and he is no more. The groom’s mother pack the luggage of Nirmala and sent her back to her uncle’s home. However, the aunty (Parveen Paul) does not accept Nirmala and throws her out of the house with her luggage.

Nirmala’s bad fate continues, and she escapes rape attempts and she finally lands at a kotha. Few months pass and Raja is out of the jail. He feels guilty about leaving the bride on her wedding day and also hurting the parents, so he reaches their house only to know that the family had already left the place. Raja returns back to his ‘home’ (a box car) where he was living with his friend and comes to know that his friend has already sold this home to another occupants. Raja resumes his ‘profession’ and enters a house for ‘stealing’. Nirmala is now Rani or Ranibai and she is entertaining customers with ‘mujra’. In this case the ‘rich’ customer is Govardhan Das (Raj Mehra) and the song that Rani is performing on is the song we have here today. We can see Raja hiding behind the curtains initially and then coming close to Govardhan Das and watching this ‘mujra’. We can see other artistes also present in the picturisation of this song.

Lata Mangeshkar is the singer of this mujra song. As mentioned above lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by R.D. Burman.

Let us listen to this song now …
