Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-4 (1987)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 8)
——————————————————————————————————

Today 27 th June 2025 is the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman. We would have been celebrating his eighty-seventh birthday today had he been alive today. It is said that Pancham’s music ruled the roost through the seventies and then began to lose ground from the eighties. It was not because the quality of his songs went down. Rather it was because the taste of music lovers changed. There were less takers for his kind of music as the 1980s wore on.

There was a decline in the number of movies where he composed music after mid-eighties. For example, he composed music in only nine movies. He had composed music for seven movies in 1986. These figures are less than half of the number of movies he worked in during early 1980s. During the first half of 1980s, he composed music in 20 (1981), 15 (1982), 19 (in 1983), 19 (1984) and 18 (in 1985)movies respectively.

In 1986 Pancham Da composed music for seven movies only. So, that year saw a big decline in total number of movies with his music. His health was also deteriorating and he had suffered his first heart attack in 1985. This could well have been the time when people around him had started deserting him.

Sometimes, things around one appear to be all ‘toxic’, where behaviour of the peoples around us, be they – friends, relatives, colleagues, sub ordinates or anybody becomes insufferable. Recently there were some not so good developments at my work place which were disturbing me. If one has a ‘good heart’ such things do keep happening to him. Incidentally during the same time I met one of my old colleagues who was now a department head of HR department in a reputed company in Vadodara. When we were discussing work culture and atmosphere he remarkede that the work culture in his company had become ‘toxic’. I wondered! Because a HR guy was feeling the effcts of ‘cut-throat’ competition these days.

In Pancham’s case there were some people who stood by him even in his bad days and they were willing to work with him. Pancham was also determined to bounce back.

Today’s song is from the movie “Inaam Dus Hazaar-198” which was produced & directed by Jyotin Goel for ‘Goel Screencraft, Bombay’. (This movie is dedicated to the memory of Devendra Goel). It was passed by Censor Board on 18.02.1987. It had Sanjay Dutt, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Gulshan Grover, Shafi Inamdar, Sharat Saxena, Raza Murad, Amrish Puri, Ramesh Deo, Sudhir, Viju Khote, T.P. Jain, Kanan Kaushal, Jagdish Raj, Arjun Aosare, Abhimanyu Sharma, and many others. Rajesh Puri and Satish Kaul had special appearances in this movie. Story and screenplay of this movie was written by G.R. Kamat. Omkar Bhakri was the editor of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Mushtaq Jalili. (Sources note that this movie was adapted from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller film ‘North By Northwest1959).

‘Inaam Dus Hazaar’ had four songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music for this movie was composed R. D. Burman. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Anuradha Paudwal were the singers for this movie.

Anuradha Paudwal is the singer. The song is picturised on Meenakshi Sheshadri. Sanjay Dutt, Amrish Puri, and many others are also seen in the picturisation.
