Alphabetical list of actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice- Part XIII
(Actresses whose name begin with the letter M)
In the first twelve episodes of the series, we listed actresses whose names begin with the first twelve letters of the alphabet and who had lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. Then we went on to cover a song that was lip synced by another acresses whose name began with the same letter and who had not lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
The exercise of finding a “new” actress whose name begins with a particular letter is being increasingly difficult. The three “new” actresses who made their debuts in the blog (as far as lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is concerned) were Anju Mahendru, Bhanupriya,Chandrakala,Divya Bharati, Ekta,Farheen,Gulnar Irani,Harsha Mehra,Isha Koppikar,Jasmine,Khushboo and Laila.
In this episode, we arrive at the thirteenth letter M. In other words, we have arrived at the halfway mark in this alphabetical journey. M is a very prolific number as far as number of Hindi film actresses are concerned. As many as 30 actresses whose name begin with M have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. The list includes some iconic names as we will see in the table that is provided below.

It was 29 days ago (on 9 January 2026) that we had reached blog song post number 19800. That song post also happened to be 300th duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. If 300 duets of a pair of singers is an enormous achievement then what will we say about twice that number of duets ? 600 duets !! That is a mind boggling mind numbing number of duets. This feat is achieved by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhonsle in the blog.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-5
My previous post in this series had a duet song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Suresh Wadkar for the movie ‘Palay Khan-1986’. Incidentally, in this post we again have a duet song by the same singers, but coming from the pen of another lyricist.
This song is from the movie “Apne Apne-1987” which was directed by Ramesh Behl for ‘Rose Movies’. It was passed by Censor Board on 05.03.1987. Ramesh Behl, who directed this movie, was also the producer of this movie. The cast of this movie included Jeetendra, Rekha, Karan Shah, and Mandakini, with Satish Shah, Atlee Brar, Dan Dhanoa, Sushma Seth, Bina, Babli, Anjana, Ghanshyam, Chandu, Pandurang Boloor, Lata, Sheela, Leena, Mina, Tina, Rupa, Omi Chopra, Surendra, Rahi, Vasu, Iqbal, Rakesh, Reshma Aurora, Anthony, Prakash, and Kader Khan. In Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra and in Goa, there used to be Devdasi (servants of God) customs under which select girls (especially trained singers and dancers) were attached to local temple for temple duties. Since they were regarded as wedded to the deity of the temples, they were expected to live a life of celibacy. They were supported by the patrons of the temple which included royalties. However, with the abolition of royalties, the Devdasi custom as envisaged in the beginning came under financial strain, forcing them to rely on rich patrons, sometime becoming their mistresse. The girls born out of such relationship were initiated into Devdasi customs.
In 1970, Jaywant Dalvi, a Marathi novelist, playwright and journalist, who was from the South Konkan region, published his novel, ‘Mahananda’ highlighting the burning issues in Devdasi customs in the Konkan region of Maharashtra as evolved over a period of time, now almost extinct. The story is about a city-based college lecturer, Babulnath (Babul for short). He while on a visit to his native village, falls in love with Mahananda (Mannu for short), a daughter born out of Devdasi custom. However, her mother opposes their marriage as Mahananda is destined to serve the temple as Devdasi. It is a tragic love story which is doomed from the beginning due to societal pressures and superstitions resulting in the emotional turmoil for the affected lovers. The end result is that Mahananda is betrayed by her own mother due to her superstitions and later by Babul due to his timid nature though he remains unmarried.
