The recent months have been very different for me as I was going through many things including many thoughts going through my mind. (I will be trying to put them in my write-ups and present them in future on the blog.).

There was a busy work schedule at work whole of July-August as we shifted the whole warehouse from one place to another (around 10 kms from original location). Thereafter it was getting settled at new location and matching the speed with the requirements of Production in the factory. Add to this the daily travel to reach the workplace and coming back to home. I was not getting into the right mood of writing.

And that is the reason I was less active on the blog. But I was never away from listening music and even watching movies in theaters. I had always loved watching movies in theaters and it gives me immense pleasure. So far in the recent one month I have watched four movies in the theaters. I enjoyed all of them.
On the other hand I was getting my daily dose of listening radio especially Vividh Bharati on FM every morning and evening on my way to office and back.

There have been many songs which I get to listen on radio for the first time and in many cases I always wish that I would present them on the blog. But as the days passed I tend to forget the songs listened. The program in the evening, which I listened to most, plays non-stop Hindi song and doesn’t mention the movie-name the songs are from. So over the period, it slips and after few months I get reminded of such songs again or even the songs get played on after a long gap in the same program.

Today’s song is one such song which I had first listened almost more than one and half-year back. I had then thought to present this on the blog. Because this song is a very nice song or rather a gem of a song but not much heard, may be because it is not from the golden period of Hindi songs.

This song is from the film ‘Maashuka’ (1987).

‘Maashuka’ was directed by Arati Bhattacharya for Harshavardhan Films.

She had also written the story of this movie. (Aarti Bhattacharya was a Bengali actress who also worked in Bhojpuri and Hindi movies as actress, script writer and director. From the information given on her wiki page I guess that the actor in his movie Kunaal is the same person whom she married, and who also was an Bhojpuri actor. There is information available on Aarti Bhattacharya on internet which needs to be compiled in detail for presentation).

The film was produced by Rajiv Ranjan Singh. It had Kunaal, Moonmoon Sen, Arun Govil, and Zarina Wahab, with Shoma Anand. Sachin had a friendly appearance in this movie and then there was Amjad Khan above all of them. Paintal, Murli, Asha Sharma, Master Ravi, Bhagwan Sinha, Shivraj, Mukesh Kumar, Anwar, Fanu, Dharm Raj, Maharana, Ratan, Birender, Sushil Yadav, Master Akash, Gupta, Harisharan, S. Madan, Prabha Mishra and others. Pradeep Kumar also had a special appearance in this movie.

Dulal Dey was the screenplay writer and associate director of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Nawab Arzoo.
Editing of this film was done by Bibhuti Bhushan. S Tewari and RK Aroon had written the lyrics of the songs in this movie. Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar, Shabbir Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Manhar, Ratna Aroon, Subhash and Kunal have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by RK Aroon. This name is new for me and I am not aware much about this music director. Also there is very less information available about him.

This movie had total six songs. Today we listen to a song from this movie which is sung by Shabbir Kumar and penned by Shardanand Tewary.

I think both the lyricist and the music director will make their debut on the blog with the debut of this movie on the blog today.

Incidentally, when I remembered this song on 26th October and checked for biographical details of Shabbir Kumar it was his sixty-ninth birthday on that day. He was born on 26th October 1954.

We belatedly wish Shabbir Kumar a very happy birthday on the blog.

Shabbir Kumar has sung many songs in the eighties and nineties and I too like many of his songs which I would like to present here in follow-up posts.

For today, let us enjoy this wonderful song …

On screen, it is actor Kunaal lip-syncing the song and also seen in the picturisation of this song are Moonmoon Sen and Arun Govil.

Hullo Atuldom

A special birthday. A landmark birthday. Don’t know what it is called in other parts of the country or world; but I know it as ‘Saptadi‘ meaning 70th birthday. And this post is to wish the concerned celebrity-entertainer who is an all rounder as far as emoting is concerned. He can be a repentant son (as in ‘Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni’ (1989)), cute and lovable father (as in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’ (2000)), mean police officer (remember Inspector Laxman Bhide of ‘Insaaf’ (1987)) and the most lovable characters of Nandu to Raja Babu & Crime-Master Go-Go. These are just a few of the varied roles he has enacted in his 47 years in the film industry. I am sure the readers would have guessed that today is the 70th birth date of Shakti Kapoor.

Shakti Kapoor (birth name Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor) is married to Shivangi Kolhapure which makes him jija of Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini (both are actors). He is father to Shraddha Kapoor (she made her Bollywood debut in 2010) and Siddhanth Kapoor (he debuted in 2013 as an actor prior to which he was assistant to director Priyadarshan). As we can see Shakti Kapoor has passed on his passion of acting to his children too. He is an actor who is fairly good at dancing. He made a great team with Kader Khan and Asrani in the films of the 80s and 90s. For the amount of time that he has been in the public sphere there will be many of his roles, scenes, even songs filmed on him that trigger memories.

Today’s song is one such song-dance sequence which I have dug out from memory. It is from the 1987 film ‘Dance Dance’, produced and directed by B Subhash. It hads Shakti Kapoor playing friend and troupe member with upcoming singers/siblings that Mithun and Smita Patil played. He falls in love with the sister (Smita Patil) and also marries her.

The plot has Resham (Shatki Kapoor) going a little wayward after the marriage viz. having extra-marital affairs, ill-treating the pregnant wife etc. Smita Patil dies and towards the climax, Resham reforms and saves Mithun from being shot by Amrish Puri & dies.

‘Dance Dance’ had songs that were essentially dance numbers (what else, the title is a giveaway) written by Anjaan and composed by Bappi Lahiri who was also the playback singer along with Vijay Benedict and Alisha Chinai. The blog already has the song “Everybody Dance With Pa Pa Pa” from this film.

With this song we also remember Lalji Pandey who passed away this date in 1997. He started his journey in Bollywood in 1953, wrote a lot of good songs through the 60s till the 90s. Many of the songs he wrote are still popular viz. “Bina Badraa Ke Bijuriya Kaise Chamke“; “Aapke Haseen Rukh Pe Aaj Naya Noor Hai“; “Aap Ki Inaayaten Aapke Karam“; “Luk Chhip Luk Chhip Jaao Na“; “Jis Ka Koi Nahin Uska To Khuda Hai Yaaro“. If I mention “Jis Ka Mujhe Tha Intezaar” and “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala” the readers will realize that Lalji Pandey is famous as Anjaan.

He was a lyricist who worked with composers from Datta Dawjekar to OP Nayyar, RD Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, Anu Malik, Chitragupta, and all music directors of his time

Wishing Crime-Master Go-Go a very Happy Birthday and thank you Anjaan ji for this song.

Hullo Atuldom

13th July is the birthdate of writer, producer, director Prakash Mehra. He would have been 83. He began his career in the late 1950s as assistant director and production controller etc. before turning director with “Haseena Maan Jayegi” in 1968 which had Babita and Shashi Kapoor in the lead. More films followed many of which were successful and super-successful, as the film industry would say “Silver Jubilees”.

One such movie was “Zanjeer” which helped Amitabh Bachchan get his foot into Bollywood. “Zanjeer” was, possibly, the first film, that brought Pran and Amitabh Bachchan together. It is said that on the heals of a successful “Samadhi” Mehra wanted to make his next with Dharmendra in the lead. But Dharmendra had to opt out due to date constraints. After knocking at the doors of all the big stars of that era Mehra went to see “Bombay To Goa” as per Pran sahab’s (as Mehra and the industry addressed Pran) suggestion; there are some who say it was Salim-Javed who made the suggestion. But whoever the trigger, ‘Talent met Talent’ (as per what Prakash Mehra used to say) – “Zanjeer” happened and an actor’s fate was sealed forever. The duo of Mehra- Bachchan went on to associate in six more ventures the last of which was “Jaadugar”in 1989.

In the remaining 16 movies that Mehra is credited as director (he is credited as director in 22 films) Dharmendra, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Feroz Khan, Sanjay Khan, Vinod Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Navin Nischol, Vinod Mehra & Raaj Kumar’s son Puru were the male leads and Babita, Jaya Bhadhuri, Rekha, Hema Malini, Reena Roy, Saira Banu, Rakhee, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Tina Munim, Madhuri Dixit, Shabana Azmi were the female leads. That list only has those starring in movies directed by Prakash Mehra and not those that he wrote, presented or produced; if all those were included the list would have been longer.

Today’s song has Tina Munim playing Pran’s daughter (I am guessing from the lyrics of the song) who is out to shame her father for ‘his stand’ as regards her marriage. This is one kind of ‘father-character’ that Pran excelled in; as we can remember him from “Bobby” “Sharabhi” “Khuda Kasam” etc. We can see Akbar Khan (real life brother of Sanjay and Feroz Khan) as one of the party guests. The other party attendees include Birbal, Dinesh Hingoo, Vikas Anand, Brahmachari, and a bunch of chorus dancers.

This Asha Bhonsle song is written by Lalji Pandey who called himself Anjaan in Hindi Films. Bappi Lahiri was the music director of this song which is from the 1987 release “Muqaddar Ka Faisla”. Kadar Khan was the dialogue writer for the movie which had Raaj Kumar, Rakhee, Raj Babbar, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Akbar Khan, Tina Munim, Ranjeet, Bindu, Om Prakash, Satyen Kapoo, Ram Sethi (most of them regulars in any Prakash Mehra film) and Pran. I haven’t seen the film but enroute to writing this post I saw some of the movie’s songs; it looks like a typical masala film.

Remembering Prakash Mehra today on his birth anniversary and Pran Sahab on his death anniversary (which was on 12th).

As I was writing this post, I also found that Akbar Khan turned 72 last week on 7th. Wishing Akbar Khan (belatedly) for his birthday with good health and good times.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -7 (1987)
—————————————————————
In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1987.

In this year ‘1987’ too we can see a decline in total number of movies where R.D. Burman had composed music, in comparison to the years 1984 and 1985 where he had composed music for 17 & 18 movies respectively.

In ‘1987’ R.D. Burman had composed music for nine movies as per details given below.

Sno Movie Title Director Lyricist Date of Censor Certificate Status on the Blog/Songs posted on the blog
1 Apne Apne Ramesh Bahl Gulshan Bawra 05.03.1987 0
2 Belagaam Naval Kishore Majrooh Sultanpuri 02.12.1987 0
3 Dacait Rahul Rawail Anand Bakshi 13.03.1987 1
4 Hifaazat Prayag Raj Anand Bakshi 14.09.1987 0

8 Jaliaanwaalaa Baagh Balraj Tah Gulzar 30.01.1987 2
9 Mardonwaali Baat Brij Indeevar 31.12.1987 0

From the above table we can also see that only three movies out of nine movies where R.D. Burman had composed music are represented on the blog.

Today we introduce one more movie from ‘Pancham’s movies of ‘1987’. This movie is ‘Apne Apne’, which is alphabetically the first movie in the above table.

“Apne Apne-1987” was directed by Ramesh Behl for ‘Rose Movies’. Ramesh Behl was also the producer of this movie.

It had Jeetendra, Rekha, Karan Shah, Mandakini, with Satish Shah, Atlee Brar, Dan Dhanoa, Sushma Seth, Bina, Babli, Anjana, Ghanshyam, Chandu, Pandurang Boloor, Lata, Sheela, Leena, Mina, Tina, Rupa, Omi Chopra, Surendre, Rahi, Vasu, Iqbal, Rakesh, Reshma Aurora, Anthony, Prakash, and Kader Khan.
Hema Malini had a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was written by Aziz Qaisi. Sunder Shetty was the editor of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.03.1987.

Lyrics for the songs of this movie were written by Gulshan Bawra. And music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, R.D. Burman had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is the list of songs of this movie.

SNo Song Title Singer
01 Apne apne se lage hamen Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar
02 Idhar bhi tu, udhar bhi tu Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar
03 Toone kiya kya jaadoo R.D. Burman

05 Jo socha bhi na tha wo honewaala hai Asha Bhonsle
06 Gyaan daan hi sabse badaa hai Lata Mangeshkar, chorus

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song appears in two parts in the movie. Tthe first part is lip-synced by Rekha. We can see Jeetendra and others (including many child artists) in the picturisation of this part.

The second part is picturised on Mandakini, with others present in the picturisation of this song. After listening to this part-2, I can guess that the video clip for part-2 is including two stanzas on different situations. The last stanza plays in the background when Rekha is about to die in this movie. And we can see Hemal Malini, Jeetendra, Mandakini, Karan Shah, Bina present there.

This composition is a wonderful composition to listen to. Lyrics are by Gulshan Bawra and music is composed by R.D. Burman.

Let us now listen to today’s song.

Hello Atuldom

“Awaam” (1987) was produced by B.R. Chopra and Ravi Chopra. It was directed by B.R. Chopra and had dialogues by Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza.
It had Ashok Kumar, Shafi Inamdar, Iftikhar, Om Shivpuri and Shreeram Lagoo playing friends, and past freedom-fighters who are living on benefits that freedom-fighters used to get. Additionally, Shafi Inamdar, Om Shivpuri and Shreeram Lagoo are politicians in post-independence India and Shafi Inamdar’s character is shown to be hand-in-glove with anti-national (Gaddaar) elements and Om Shivpuri being happy reaping benefits of the Gaddaars.

Rajesh Khanna played the son of the straight-forward Iftikhar and is shown to worship Ashok Kumar. Then there are Deepak Parashar and Raj Babbar who are Rajesh Khanna’s friends. Poonam Dhillon & Smita Patil are the female characters who are slightly more than glamour dolls. There is Nana Patekar who plays an Army officer who has engaged Rajesh Khanna (an infantry man) to look into the activities of the corrupt people. Oh, I forgot to mention Maneesha kohli (character actor Dev Kumar’s daughter) played a negative character with some good dance numbers featuring her. Plus Vijay Arora, Chandrashekhar, Saeed Jaffery, Satish Shah, Rita Rani Kaul, Ashalata and Sushma Seth form the supporting cast. (As we can see it was a multi, multi-starrer).

So that is the story of the movie in short. But the movie itself was 2 & 1/2 hours long with a few people being eliminated every time the cover of the Gaddaars is blown. I know also this because my favourite D2H channel is having a festival of BR Chopra films this week- to remember the producer-director on his birth anniversary which is on 22nd April; he would have been 108. They have aired Ittefaq, Agni Pariksha, Karm, Awam and Afsana is scheduled for tomorrow. Some really ‘Hatke’ movies have been selected, and not the oft-repeated Naya Daur, Baghban, The Burning Train etc. And since it is a BR Chopra film festival I am sure that the channel must have been spoilt with a large library to choose from.

I discovered a few interesting tit-bits as I sat to write this post.

1) this was B R Chopra’s final film as director. Then he made Mahabharat the television series.
2) for about 36 years Ashok Kumar and B R Chopra worked together starting with Chopra’s first film Afsana in 1951.
3) Iftikhar was a permanent in Chopra’s films for 30 years and this was the last time they worked together.
4) Rajesh Khanna acted in a BR Chopra film after 10 years in ‘Awam’; Karm was in 1977.
5) from ‘Gumrah’ to ‘Awam’ Ravi gave music for BR Chopra films for 25 years. This was their last together.
6) This was Smita Patil’s last movie. She had completed shooting her scenes and dubbing was left. Rekha dubbed for Smita’s character.

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor & Asha Bhonsle and Rajesh Khanna & Poonam lip-sync. Hasan Kamal was the lyricist.

With this post we can also wish the beautiful Poonam on turning 60 a few days back. April 18th was her birthday. It is hard to imagine that she is 60. All the best to her for great times ahead.

Blog Day : 4972 Post No. : 16847 Movie Count : 4582

I have in my earlier posts mentioned that nowadays I am getting to listen ‘radio’ for at least ‘two to two and half’ hours every day. And mainly I listen the programmes on Vividh Bharati only.

So, in the morning time it is part of ‘ham hai raahi pyaar ke’ and ‘Bharat ki goonj’ and evening times it is part of or sometimes full edition of ‘Shaam sindoori’, ‘Sangeet sarita’, ‘Jaymala’ etc.
Now that is the daily schedule since 2nd November’2020. This has given me the opportunity to listen variety of songs from the yesteryears and even the songs from recent times. I have come across many unheard songs and some beautiful songs even from the eighties and nineties. I will try to share them as and when possible.

For today’s post I am presenting a song from the 1987 movie ‘Aakhiri Nishchay
’, which I got to listen in a program on ‘Vividh Bharti’.

Though many sources mention this movie’s name as ‘Nishchay’ too. I think the ‘Nishchay-1986’ was later released in ‘1987’ with the title as ‘Aakhiri Nishchay’.
While searching more details for this movie first I landed to the movie name ‘Nishchay’ and later it was cleared, that it is ‘Aakhiri Nishchay’. Though ‘vinyl’ images for ‘Nishchay’ (not to be confused he same name movie ‘Nishchaiy’ of 1992) are also available. (Though ‘Hindi Filmography’ 1986-2013 doesn’t mention any such note for this movie).

‘Nishchay-1986’ or ‘Aakhiri Nishchay-1987’ was directed by K.C. Agarwal for ‘B. Govinda Productions’.

Jairam Chawla was the producer of this movie.

It had Shekhar Suman, Sadhna (south), Seema Vaz, Satish Kaul, Surendra Pal, Sudhir Dalvi, Yunus Parvez, Bali Grover, Ratan Allakh, Jay Chawla, Raja Duggal, Raj Kishore, Asha Sharma, Anil Chaddha and others. The movie also featured a dog – Jackie.

As mentioned in ‘Hindi Filmography (1986-2013)’ this movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.12.1987.

Almost all the sources mentions that this movie had four songs in it. Voices of Mahendra Kapoor, Anup Jalota, Hemalata and Susheel Kumar are used in these songs.

Lyrics for all the four songs were written by Ravindra Jain who is also the music director for this movie.

When today’s song was playing on VVB I liked it very much because of the tune, words and singing of this song which is very beautiful, and this is a ‘sweet’ ‘romantic’ duet. This song is sung by Hemlata and Susheel Kumar.

As mentioned above lyrics for this song have been written by Ravindra Jain who is also the music composer for this movie.

And today 28th February’2022 is the seventy-eighth birth anniversary of music-director, lyricist Ravindra Jain (28 February 1944 – 9 October 2015). On this occasion we pay our tributes to Ravindra Jain and listen to this song written and composed by him.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs and other details.

Let us now listen to today’s song …

With this song ‘Aakhiri Nishchay-1987’ makes its debut on the blog …

Song-Aa to gaye hain tere sang tanhaai mein (Aakhiri Nischay)(1988) Singers-Hemlata, Susheel Kumar, Lyrics-Ravindra Jain, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

aa to gaye hain

pyaasa bahut hoon main lekin

o o o o
tu hai meri chaahat se anjaana kya
o ho ho ho o
tu hai meri chaahat se anjaana kya

In Hindi film industry, there have been many ‘rags to riches’ stories since its inceptions. There were instances where ‘rags to riches’ went back to their ‘rags’ status because they could not prudently handle their wealth and the fame. On the other hand, there are instances who could retain their rich status thanks to their dedication to work as well as prudent financial planning. One of them was Chandrashekar Narvekar, who is known in Hindi film industry as N. Chandra (born 04/04/1952).

N Chandra was born and brought up in a lower middle class family in the midst of mill workers in Worli Naka. The working class had their chawls and hutments at the foot of Worli Hills while the affluent class of the society lived on the top of the hills. So, he had closely seen the economic disparity between the rich and the poor.

After completion of his high-school, N Chandra joined the Film Centre at Tardeo in the film editing division where his father was employed. He learnt the nuances of film editing. In 1971, he started as clapper boy for Gulzar’s ‘Mere Apne’ (1971) and became one of Gulzar’s assistant directors in ‘Parichay’ (1972), ‘Koshish’ (1972), ‘Achanak’ (1973), Aandhi’ (1975), ‘Khushboo’ (1975) and ‘Mausam’ (1975). Chandrashekhar Narvekar changed his name to N Chandra when he became the associate director to Bapu in ‘Bezubaan’ (1982) and ‘Woh 7 Din’ (1983) for which he was also a full-pledged Editor of these two films.

While working for ‘Woh 7 Din’ (1983), N Chandra got the inspiration to independently direct a Hindi film. He co-produced and directed his debut film ‘Ankush’ (1986) with non-star actors, most of whom were from Marathi and Gujarati stages. The story of the film was based on what N Chandra had witnessed during his younger days in Worli Naka after a prolonged mill workers strike. At that time, Worli-Lower Parel areas of Mumbai had the highest concentrations of cotton mills. The prolonged strike led to the closure of mills permanently, creating unemployment among the youth and the social unrest.

‘Ankush’ (1986) grossed over 3 crores on the box office on a budget of Rs,12 lakhs, a part of which was raised by N Chandra by selling his personal belongings. The tremendous success of the film helped Nana Patekar in improving his career graph as an actor. For N Chandra, the film boosted his confidence that a good story based on the contemporary subject with a realistic approach in direction could make a film successful even with non-star actors. His next two films – ‘Pratighaat’ (1987) and ‘Tezaab’ (1988) completed a sort of a trilogy of films on social justice.

‘Pratighaat’ (1987) was the second film which N Chandra directed apart from writing the screen-play and editing the film. The film was produced by A Ramoji Rao and was a remake of a Telugu film ‘Pratighatana’ (1985) which was also remade in Malayalam as ‘Pakarathinu Pakaram’ (1986). Sujata Mehta, a prominent Gujarati stage actor who had become popular with her Hindi TV serials ‘Khandaan’ (1985) and ‘Shrikant’ (1986), made her debut in this film as a lead actor along with Arvind Kumar and Charan Raj. The other actors included Rohini Hattangadi, Ashok Saraf, Mohan Bhandari, Nana Patekar, Subbiraj, Usha Nadkarni, Savita Bajaj, Ravi Patwardhan, Anuradha Sawant etc. The film was released on March 17, 1987.

Even though, in the film, Sujata Mehta was paired with Arvind Kumar, it was Charan Raj who had a larger presence in the film in the role of a criminal, Kali Prasad. Charan Raj is a Kannada actor who mostly did the role of a villain in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films. He has also produced, directed and composed music for some films.

The DVD of the film is available for on-line for viewing. However, the quality of the picture as well as sound is not of good quality. Hence, I have watched the film sporadically. The gist of the story of the film is as under:

Laxmi (Sujata Mehta) is married to Satya Prakash (Arvind Kumar) who is a practicing lawyer. Laxmi works as a scool teacher. In the town, there is a hardened criminal, Kali Prasad (Charan Raj) whose writ rules over the entire town as he has blessing from a local politician. He has bee arrested in the past but gets release on bail with the blessing of a local politician which is followed by Kali taking the revenge on the complainers or the policeman who arrested him, resulting in their deaths. One of the victims is an ex-constable (Nana Patekar) who has become insane after his wife is brutually killed by Kali.

Laxmi finds it odd that even her school is under the influence of Kali for his notorious activities. She seeks help from her college-mate, sub-inspector, Ajay Shrivastav (Mohan Bhandari). He tells Laxmi that there is no point in arresting him as no one would stand witness against him and he gets the bail.
Nonetheless, Ajay arrests him after which he gets the bail. In the broad daylight, Ajay is murdered by Kali and Laxmi has witnessed his murder. She is ready to stand witness against Kali in the police station. Kali takes revenge on Laxmi by striping her in the public and in front of her husband who is scared to rescue her.

Laxmi takes a vow that she would continue to fight against Kali for justice and she is helped by Durga (Rohni Hattangadi) whose husband was killed by Kali for lodging complaint against him in the police station. Local election is due and Kali has been selected as a candidate. Laxmi stands in the elections against Kali. Kali’s hooligans create a lot of problem for Laxmi in her election campaign. Kali wins the election by booth capturing.

During the election victory celebration, Laxmi reaches on the stage and congratulate him on his election victory. She has brought a real axe which was the election symbol of Kali and hacks him to death in front of a large crowd. The film ends with police arriving on the scene and arresting Laxmi who sarcastically tells the Inspector that she is happy that he is doing his duties which he failed to do so while Kali was on a killing spree in the town.

‘Pratighaat’ (1987) made with non-star cast was a runway success at the box office front. The film reviews highly praised the performance of Sujata Mehta and Charan Raj.

The film had four songs all written and composed by Ravindra Jain. I am presenting the first song, ‘tere sar pe mere pyaar kaa farz hai’ from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by S P Balasubrahmanyam and S Janaki.

With this song, the film, ‘Pratighaat’ (1987) makes its debut on the Blog.

Blog Day :

4757 Post No. : 16500 Movie Count :

4483

Slowly, steadily, and unnoticeably, the blog reaches yet another blog century. This post is post number 16500 for the blog. In other words, this song is the 165th century post for the blog.

When I thought about writing an article to go with post, I considered going through all the previous century posts. I kept going backwards from 164th century post, 163rd century post. After ten such posts, I gave up. If someone thinks that 164 songs and 164 song articles is a small number, then please try to do that exercise yourself. If one has to make a playlist of these century songs, the entire playlist will play for more than eight hours !

If that is the case for 164 of the choicest songs in the blog, then just imgine how many hours of music the entire blog contains. The blog has been going on at the rate of 3.5 songs a day for 4756 days. Assuming that these three and half songs a day are 12 minutes long then 12 minutes equals 0.2 hours of song every day. Multiply it with 4756. We get 951 hours of song in the blog. 951 hours means 40 days of non stop music if one plays it 24 hours a day without a break.

No normal human being will be able to do it, of course. If a normal music lover decides to savour music from the blog for just one hour a day, then he will have enough masala in the blog to last 951 days, viz 2 years and 8 months. During these 951 days, the blog would add another 195 hours of music, of course. 🙂

I think, some of our regulars have tried it. They should share their experiences with us. Since I post the articles and listen to the song myself, and that too more than once, I must have heard these songs for say 2000 hours already, but in a manner that did not burden me. Rather I must have enjoyed the experience, seeing that I am still at it, after more than 13 years.

The blog completed its 13th birthday recently, on 19 July 2021. Four articles were posted on the occasions. One was a Lata Mangeshkar yearwise songs series, which has been appearing every monday in the blog for the last 45 mondays. Other three articles, by three different regulars, were blog birthday celebration posts. My Lata Mangeshkar song series takes so much time out of me that it does not leave me time for any other article on mondays from me. That is why I could not post any special blog birthday articles. So I decisded to use this century post as century post cum belated blog birthday celebrating writeup. 🙂

As is usual now a days, our century posts are low key affairs. Our regulars do not seem to wait eagerly for them unlike in the past. Even the post writer leaves it till the last moment before he wakes up and starts to look desperately for a song appropriate for the occasion. Surprisingly, despite of such negligence, we always manage to find songs that are eminently suitable for the occasion.

Most of the blog century posts are from the golden era. The blog itself mainly covers songs from that era. But we have songs (including blog century songs) from pre golden era (before 1949) and also songs from post golden era (songs released after 1980).

It is popularly believed that the golden era of HFM was over after 1980. Even then, we continued to get some wonderful songs in HFM. Quite a few songs after 1980 have figured in the blog as blog century songs. Here are their details:

Blog post number Date (Blog day number) Song Movie (Year) Remarks
4100 30 june 2011 (1077) Aisa lage kahin door se Trishaagni (1988)
9800 1 May 2014(2113) Maine tumse kuchh nahin maanga Katha (1983)
13500 3 August 2017(3303) Ye paisa bolta hai Kaala Baazaar (1989)
15200 4 September 2019 (4065) Dil mein Mars hai Mission Mangal (2019) Newest century song in the blog
15500 27 March 2020(4270) Uljhan ho chaahe koi Chambal Ke Daaku (1982) One of the rarest songs
15600 11 May 2020 (4315) Goriya uski deewaani Aag Ka Darya (1990)
16100 15 December 2020 (4533) Hai ye kaisa nasha Chorni (1981)

One can see that as many as six songs from the decade of 1980s have figured i the blog as Blog century posts. But the newest song that has figured as the blog century post is from 2019. This song from Mission Mangal”(2019) became a century post in 2019, viz in the same year when this movie and its songs were released. That is one big surprise for most blog regulars. Even I , who presented the article, was surprised. I had myself forgoten about the fact that I had done something like this, and that too less than two years ago. 🙂

Songs that figure in the blog as blog century songs are special songs in one way or the other. And the speciality varies from one song to another.

The song under discussion is a song that was reasonably popular when the movie was released. The movie was forgotten with time and even this song seemingly went away. There are some songs, that get a second wind for some reasons and this time they become far far popular than what they were the first time round.

I can give quite a few such examples. Here are some examples:

April fool banaya(April fool) was a reasonably popular song of its time that got forgotten with time. In 1983 this song got reived when it was used in an important scene in “Andha Kaanoon”(1983).

Ek chatur naar(Padosan)(1968) was hardly popular during the first run of the movie. It is only after 1980s that this song has become an extremely popular song and it seems to have become more popular and this popularity is here to stay.

Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera (Nagina) had run its course and had been forgotten. The song earned huge popularity in march 2018, thanks to reasons that had nothing to do be music and Indians. Non Indians popularised this song thanks to their childish pranks on the field of cricket. My writeup on this song described the funny episode leading to the revival of this song in this article.

The song under discussion got its second wind thanks to dance competion shows that have become popular on Indian TV. On these dance songs, ordinary folks dance on some olf Hindi film dance songs. In one episode one middle aged man, Sanjeev Sriastava (a ka Dabbu Uncle) performed dance on stage on this song alongwith his wife and took the TV audience by storm. Even Govinda, who originally danced on this song found Dabbu Uncle’s dance cute. This song was performed on screen by Govinda and Neelam. On a dance show, both of them were invited as judges. This song had earned such popularity by then that the two of then were asked to come on stage and dance on the song, three decades after they had originally danced on this song on screen. And they obliged.

And here is Dabbu uncle getting to perform with Govinda himself.

It goes without saying that this is one song that has been repopularised by an ordinary man. That is the power of an ordinar man. 🙂

The movie the song belonged to was “Khudgarz”(1987). The movie was produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan for Fimkraft, Bombay. The movie had Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Govinda, Bhanupriya, Amrita Singh, Neelam Kothari, Kadar Khan, Kiran Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Sudhir Dalvi,Sushma Seth, Praveen Kumar, Sangeeta Naik, Ghanshyam, Dinesh Hingoo, Satyen Kapoo, Mac Mohan, Master Javed Hyder etc in it. Rishi Kapoor and Abhi Bhattacharya had figured in guest appearances in the movie.

The movie was based on the story “Kane and Abel” penned by Jeffrey Archer without acknowedgement. Jeffrey Archer accused the maker of plagiarising his intellectual right without paying for it. It was the first time that a movie produced by Rakesh Roshan hit the jackpot at the box office. The movie was subsequently made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia etc as well.

Here is this song from “Khudgarz”(1987). It is sung by Md Aziz and Sadhana Sargam. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Since it is the dance on the song that has repopularised the song, I was curous to know who was the dance master. I had to watch the movie for a few mintes, till the first song appeared on screen, accompanied by credits. According to credits Dances are choreographed by Suresh Bhatt. His assistants were Aruna and Sujata.

Here is this fantastic song. It is a song that has to be savoured by watching its video. The song, and its picturisation has earned enormous popularity on YT channels which was hardly the case a few years ago.

The movie makes its debut in the blog with this song.

With this song, the blog now had 16500 song posts in it. I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose continuous support and encouragement keeps fuelling this labour of love musical bandwagon. Like the lyrics of this song, eve for us in the blog “dil bahalta hai mera aapke (is blog pe) aa jaane se”. Keep visiting, keep commenting, and keep supporting us with your encouragement. We still have lots and lots of musical gems to discover and savour.

Hullo Atuldom

Today 16th June is the 68th birthday of Gourang Chakraborty. He was born as the eldest son to Basantakumar Chakraborty and Santimoyee Chakraborty in East Bengal (modern day Bangladesh). He is an entrepreneur, social worker, television presenter, actor, producer, former Rajya Sabha member who has sung one song in his career that began in 1976 with the art film which was directed by Mrinal Sen’s National Award winning “Mrigayaa”.

Post “Mrigayaa” he was seen in a guest appearance in Raj Tilak directed Sanjeev Kumar -Shashi Kapoor- Vidya Sinha- Bindiya Goswami starrer “Mukti” (I saw it in his filmography, have seen the movie a few times but don’t remember seeing him there, I must have blinked at that instant).

1978 saw him in 2 Bengali and 3 Hindi films one of which was a small blink and miss role “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan”. Of the three Hindi movies “Hamara Sansaar” and “Mera Rakshak” were remakes of South Indian movies.

1979 had him as Gunmaster G9 in Ravikant Nagaich directed “Surakshaa”; a special appearance in “Tere Pyar Mein”; a guest appearance in Rajesh Khanna starrer “Amardeep” as Rajesh Khanna’s sister’s boyfriend; a regular Basu Chatterjee hero in “Prem Vivah” alongside Utpal Dutt, Asha Parekh and Bindiya Goswami. Plus there was “Bhayanak” and Rajshri productions “Tarana”.

“Surakshaa” and “Tarana” gave him some good songs to dance to, and also these two movies are still remembered for their songs.
These days we see him on TV in the role of maha-judge on dance reality shows. And also he plays roles suited to his age in most movies like Mani Ratnam’s “Guru”; Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal 3”; Anil Sharma’s “Veer”; Vinay Sapru- Radhika Rao directed “Lucky: No time for love” etc. The roles he has been getting are varied where he is able show off his comic side and still dance and do fisticuffs.

For today’s occasion I have a whole list of songs to choose from. Songs from movies that I have seen and loved. I have settled for a song that I heard for the first time in 1987. I even had the cassette of this movie in my collection and seen the movie at the time of its release.

This song has been on my personal waiting list for a few years now. It is from the 1987 B. Subhash produced and directed “Dance Dance”. Smita Patil, Mithun (Gourang) Chakraborty, Mandakini, Shakti Kapoor formed the primary cast with Amrish Puri and Om Shivpuri playing supporting cast. It was the story of the brother sister team of Smita and Mithun who are separated from their parents as children, grow up to be singers who are part of a troupe which performs at events and restaurants. There is the usual twist of the sister falling in love and marrying a guy who later turns bad, ditches her and also is the cause of her death. The movie comes to a close with the brother avenging his parents as well as the sister’s death.

Bappi Lahiri was the music director for this movie which was part of a series of dance based films that B Subhash made post the successful “Disco Dancer”. Anjaan was the lyrics in-charge for all these movies. Today for this birthday song we shall have a party where Shakti Kapoor and Mithun sing to an audience of oldies. It is rather sweet to see the spirit of the folks in the audience when they take to the floor with Mithun and Shakti. And we have Smita Patil among the audience egging everybody to enjoy themselves. Let us also enjoy ourselves wishing this disco dancer- break dancer – Mithunda a very Happy Birthday.
