(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 7)
——————————————————————————————————

Today 27th June 2025 is the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman. We are celebrating the music of Pancham on this blog today. Rahul Dev Burman or Pancham, as he was fondly known, made his debut in Hindi movies with the 1961 movie ‘Chhote Nawaab’. Rahul Dev Burman went on to create some of the most timeless classics, musical gems and overall good music which ruled the the roost and topped music charts for more than a decade.

As usually happens with everyone, there were ups and downs in his life too. Nevertheless he gave his best even in the mid-eighties and onwards when he was no longer at the top and when he was written off by critics. Even when he was ruling the charts and creating good music during the seventies he was labelled as the prisoner of his own image. It was in fact the musical taste of people that changed with time. Pancham was a genius wanderer in the world of music who keep inventing innovative sound out of common things and created music from them which is now decribed as being ‘ahead of its time’. There are numerous videos on internet about Pancham and his music, his musicians etc etc. Recordings of his unreleased songs are being unearthed. Recordings of his sittings for composing various songs are also coming to the fore. I have been listening to some of these recordings. If one notes the musical nuances during these sittingsc, one can realize how deep he was in his creations. Gulzar described it as ‘ wo har gaane ko pakaataa thhaa’, he get involved into the song so much that he would visualise the picturisation of these songs, he would sometimes paint the visuals through his music based on the lyrics of the songs.

Pancham passed away on 04.01.1994 at the age of just fifty-four years, but what he has left behind will continue to be savoured by music lovers. It is no small thing to leave a legacy behind in such a short span of life.

Here is a song from the movie “Imaan-1974” which was directed by Padmanabh for ‘Gurudutt Films Combine, Bombay’. It is a movie from ‘social genre’. It was produced by Atmaram (Gurudutt’s brother). The cast of this movie includes Sanjeev Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Bhagwan, Anwar Hussain, Satyen Kappu, Keshto Mukherjee, Murad, Krishnakant, Bhushan Tiwari, Viju Khote, Mohan Choti, Asha Potdar, Aarti, Johny Walker, Rajan Kapoor, Shivraj, Radheshyam, Narmada Shankar, Ramlal, Darshan, Mamaji, Nazeer Kashmiri, Kedar Sehgal and others.

This movie has five songs. They were written by Anand Bakshi and music was composed to music by R.D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey sang the songs of this movie.

The song in this post is picturised on Leena Chandavarkar and Aarti. Sanjeev Kumar, Bhagwan dada, dancer Bulbul (Real name Tyrone Aviet), Dancer Shirley etc are also present in the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics for this song as well as information about the artists in the picturisation were given by Prakashchandra.

With this song, all the songs of “Imaan”(1974) have now been covered in the blog. The movie thus gets YIPPEED in the blog.
