#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————

“Choron Ki Baaraat-1960” was directed by Pradeep Naiyyar for ‘K Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Charanjeet and passed by Censor Board on 22.08.1960. The cast of this movie had Amarnath, Nazi, Shaikh, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Jani Babu Qawwal, George, Nemo, Meena, Darshan, Om Mota, Haroon, Daleep, Badshah, Gulab, Bahadur (the dog), Jeevankala, Rammohan, Master Sohan, Majnoo, Rajan Haksar, and others.

This movie has six songs written by Gulzar (as Gulzar Deenvi (one song), Naqsh Lyallpuri (one song), Farooq Kaiser (one song), Sajan Bihar and Aziz Ghazi. Lyricist’s name for one song is not known. The singers list for this movie includes Sudha Malhotra, Jani Babu Qawwaal, Mahendra Kapoor, S. Balbir, and Suman Kalyanpur.

One song from this movie – a duet sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Mahendra Kapoor has been posted on the blog on 23.01.2023. Today I am presenting the second song from this movie which is another duet sung by the same pair of the singers. Lyricist is Gulzar Deenvi i.e. Gulzar Saab.

While presenting this first song from the movie here is what our beloved editor Shree Sudhir jee wrote about this movie and also clarifying about the first song of lyricist Gulzar. Most sources on internet and links presenting this song carry this information that this is the first song that Gulzar wrote for Hindi films.

“Film Choron ki barat-60 was a story about a hidden treasure and different people who are after getting it and how they try to outsmart others. It is a strange coincidence that in this film, there are artistes who, in their real life, were fit to be in a Choron ki baraat. What I mean to say is that, one Lyricist and one singer from this film cheated the film industry, the audience and the common people by hiding certain facts. Not only these two, but some other famous actors, actresses, singers etc, have hidden their career matters from others – mind you, not inadvertently but intentionally ! I am providing details of some such cases here for your information.

There were 5 Lyricists for 6 songs of this film. One of them was “Gulzar Deenvi”, who was known as ‘ Gulzar’ – the famous poet, director , singer and actor in later days. One of the singers of this film was Mahendra Kapoor. These two are the culprits, who tried to hide and cheat everyone in not admitting honestly how they entered the film line. Now read this –

Gulzar’s first song was not from Bandini – 63, as is always claimed by him, in every interview. He has written lyrics in films Choron ki Baraat-60, Diler Haseena-60 and Shrimaan Satyawadi-60. He wrote these songs as Gulzar Deenvi. But he also wrote lyrics in the film Kabuliwala-61 and Prempatra-62 in the name of Gulzar. Even then he claims Bandini-63 as his first film- which is wrong. There is enough proof that Gulzar Deenvi and Gulzar is the same person.”

This second song from this movie is yet another duet songs sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Mahendra Kapoor. This song was lying with me since long. It is a nice song to listen to. As mentioned above lyricist for this song is Gulzar and music is composed by Manohar Arora.

Lyrics

jaane aur anjaane ae
aaj kaheen deewaane
ghoomne nikley
jhoomne nikley
albele mastaane
jaane aur anjaane ae

zulfon mein ithhlaate baadal
baahon mein lehraate aanchal
zulfon mein ithhlaate baadal
baahon mein lehraate aanchal
aankhon mein kaajal ke dore
laal gulaabee gorey gorey
mastee mein tanhaayiyaan
letee hain angdaayiyaan
dil kee dhadkan kehtee jaaye
apne hain zamaane ae
jaane aur anjaane

haathh mein lekar
haathh chalee hai
choron kee baaraat chalee hai ae
oye
haathh mein lekar
haathh chalee hai
choron kee baaraat chalee hai
kaalee goree
chhotee motee
lotaa tawaa paraat chalee hai
powder surkhee laalee
soorat bholee bhaalee
dil ko churaa ke kahaan chaley hain
mausam ke parwaane
mausam ke parwaane

soorat ye langoor kee
soojhe kaise door kee
soorat ye langoor kee
soojhe kaise door kee
dhhoondhho koyee jodee kaa
aur damdee kaa naa kaudee kaa aa
baaton ke ye bande hain
jhoothhe saare phande hain
paanee dekh ke
dil ke mendhhak
lagtey hain tarraane
jaane aur anjaane

sunte jaao dil kee baatein
soonee rah gayeen apnee raatein
haay
sunte jaao dil kee baatein
soonee reh gayeen apnee raatein
pyaar ke munh se jee naa niklaa
seedhee unglee ghee naa niklaa aa
dil apnaa hai gyaanee
kyaa jodee pehchaanee
maan bhee jaao
jaan bhee jaao
chhodo ye bahaane ae

jaane aur anjaane
oye
aaj kahin deewaane

ghoomne nikley
o jhoomne nikley
albele mastaane ae
albele mastaane

Mahendra Kapoor must have sung very few Gulzar songs.
