Blog Day :

5302 Post No. : 17372 Movie Count :

Today’s song is from the film Choron ki Baraat-1960. This is a very rare song from a film, which is making its Debut on the Blog with this song. There was another film having the same title ,in 1980 also. 26 film titles started with the word Chor…, from 1931 to 2012.

produced by Charanjeet, under the banner of K Pictures, Bombay, the film was directed by Pradeep nayyar and the Music Director was Manohar (Arora), whose assistants for this film were Sonik-Omi, who themselves became a reasonably successful MD pair with the film ” Dil ne phir yaad kiya”-1966. The cast of the film was Amarnath (Bharadwaj), Nazi, Shaikh, Nemo, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Gulab, Jeevankala, Ram Mohan and many others.

Film Choron ki barat-60 was a story about a hidden treasure and different people who are after getting it and how they try to outsmart others. It is a strange coincidence that in this film, there are artistes who, in their real life, were fit to be in a Choron ki baraat. What I mean to say is that, one Lyricist and one singer from this film cheated the film industry, the audience and the common people by hiding certain facts. Not only these two, but some other famous actors, actresses, singers etc, have hidden their career matters from others – mind you, not inadvertently but intentionally ! I am providing details of some such cases here for your information.

There were 5 Lyricists for 6 songs of this film. One of them was “Gulzar Deenvi”, who was known as ‘ Gulzar’ – the famous poet, director , singer and actor in later days. One of the singers of this film was Mahendra Kapoor. These two are the culprits, who tried to hide and cheat everyone in not admitting honestly how they entered the filmline. Now read this –

Gulzar’s first song was not from Bandini – 63, as is always claimed by him, in every interview. He has written lyrics in films Choron ki Baraat-60, Diler Haseena-60 and Shriman Satyawadi-60. He wrote these songs as Gulzar Deenvi. But he also wrote lyrics in the film Kabuliwala-61 and Prempatra-62 in the name of Gulzar. Even then he claims Bandini-63 as his first film- which is wrong. There is enough proof that Gulzar Deenvi and Gulzar is the same person.

Born January 9, 1934, in Amritsar, Mahendra Kapoor spent the majority of his childhood in Mumbai, where he claimed top honors in the All-India Murphy-Metro Singing competition – 57, for Newcomers. His victory captured the attention of filmmaker Raja Nawathe, who used him in 1958’s Sohni Mahiwal. This also caused a controversy, because the contest was for new comers and Mahendra Kapoor had already sung songs in several films like Madmast-53, Madhur milan-55 Lalkar-56 and Heer-56 and also his first solo song in film Diwali ki raat-56. Later on he gave some lame excuse that he had not got any payment for that song etc etc.

Mala Sinha came from Calcutta to make a career in Bombay films. In Calcutta she worked in a Bilingual film ‘Chitrangadha-54’ in Bangla and Hindi. In 54 again, she did her first film in Bombay, Badshah-54, then came Hamlet-54, Riyasat-55 and Ekadashi-55. In all her interviews, Mala Sinha always quoted “Rangeen Raten”-56 with Shammi Kapoor as her first film in Bombay. She was ashamed of revealing that in film Riyasat-55, her Hero was Mahipal and in film Ekadashi the Hero was Trilok Kapoor. She always hid this fact. There are many Heroines who want to hide their struggling days. For example,in film “Professor”-62 Shammi Kapoor’s Heroine was Kalpana. Though touted as her first film, her first film was Pyar ki Jeet-62, opposite Mahipal- a fact which Kalpana always hid from everyone.

Similarly, A grade Heroine Meena Kumari also had done several Mythological and costume films before Baiju Bawra took her high up and above other Heroines. Filmslike Veer Ghatotkach-49, Shri Ganesh Mahima-50, Laxmi Narayan-51, Hanuman Paataal vijay-51 and Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-52 had Mahipal as her Hero. In her later years, she always hid her earlier film Heroes. Even comedian Johnny Walker, who is supposed to have made a beginning with Baazi-51, had earlier worked in “The last message or Aakhri paigham”-49. A C grade film. However this fact is not told by anyone.

Not only actors, but even singers do this. They hesitate to say that they first sang for C grade films. Take the case of Sudha Malhotra, who used to declare Arzoo-50 as her first film, under Anil Biswas, but she never told that earlier she had sung 3 songs in film Aakhri paigham-49, under the baton of Abid Hussein Khan, a less known composer.

It is very unfortunate that once the artiste becomes famous, he tends to forget his humble beginning with a less known film or a composer. This is because they are ashamed of it. Shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji,famous collector and a film Historian, rues that they do so. He feels the blame also goes to people who take their interview, because the interview taker does not do proper homework. Many times they do not know anything and simply listen to whatever is told by the artiste.

One of the names in the cast of this film is NEMO. Hardly any reader would remember this name, but he was a major actor in the Hindi films of New Theatres, Calcutta and some films of Raj Kapoor in Bombay. Incidentally, the film Choron ki Baraat-1960 was his last film in which he had acted, though in a small role. The film was released just 10 days after Nemo died in Bombay. Here is his Bio-data….

Mirza Muhammad Begg was born on 27th december 1903 at Calcutta. He passed his Senior Cambridge. One day he, along with some friends, visited New Theatres to see a film shooting. Mirza Muhammad Begg merely wanted to watch the shooting of ‘Yahoodi Ki Larki’ (1933) but, as luck would have it, his visit to the New Theatres studio in Calcutta led to a small role in the same film. The part was that of a Roman king and little did Begg know back then that he’d soon be turning to Latin to fish out a lasting identity.

A year later, he was invited by New Theatres’ founder B.N. Sircar to work as the production manager of ‘Karwan-e-Hayat’ (1935) and another chance role beckoned. A female actor who was supposed to play an old witch in the film failed to turn up for the shooting and Begg volunteered for the part. The make-up department stepped up to the challenge and Begg, unrecognisable in the get-up, did the job (and always considered it his best effort). What happened next is even more interesting. Once the film was ready, the makers felt apprehensive about revealing to the public that a man had played the witch’s role. Begg came up with a solution – a gender-ambiguous screen name for himself. And in a delightfully wacky move, he picked a name that means ‘nobody/nothing’ in Latin – ‘Nemo’.

The name stuck on and this was the beginning of Nemo’s steadfast association with New Theatres – one that resulted in a string of features like ‘Karodpati’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Doctor’ and ‘Zindagi’. He was Vidushak, the royal jester, in ‘Vidyapati’, a rigid but caring father in ‘Jawani Ki Reet’ and the devoted caretaker Dharamdas in P.C. Barua’s ‘Devdas’. These diverse characters earned him appreciation from audiences and critics alike. Further, the story of the Saigal hit ‘The President’ (1937) was based on his idea and he was duly credited for the same. Alongside his work in films, he also edited and published ‘Akkas’ – a very popular Urdu (and later, Urdu-English bilingual) film magazine in those days. Its surviving copies now serve as an important archive of the early talkies. His last film with New Theatres was Kashinath. When Calcutta was bombed by Japan in late 1942, Nemo migrated with his family to his ancestral hometown, Lucknow. He later went over to Bombay for a short while to work in Mazhar Khan’s ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945), and then returned to Lucknow to settle into a life far removed from the studio lights.

In the middle of it all lies an extraordinary fact – at the time he entered the movies, M.M. Begg was a national billiards champion! He won the inaugural Indian Open Billiards Championship in 1931 and never left the game thereon, despite a busy and flourishing film career. He won the trophy again in 1937, and between the 2 wins, he was the runner-up thrice. Not to mention, he represented the country at international tournaments and also headed various administrative organisations related to the game. His contributions towards establishing and popularising billiards and snooker in India are widely mentioned, and always in glowing terms. He was also obsessed with Racing.

It was nearly a decade after ‘Pehli Nazar’ that Raj Kapoor managed to pull Nemo out of his sabbatical for 2 memorable final acts in ‘Shree 420’ and ‘Jagte Raho’. In both, Nemo played similar roles of manipulative, corrupt seths who hide their sinister designs behind a facade of respectability. If he was jittery about facing the camera after a long gap, it doesn’t show (unless Seth Sonachand’s trembling chin is not a mannerism ). He was particularly effective in ‘Shree 420’, where he puts on the most evil smile possible and hisses to Raj Kapoor, “Aap se mulaqaat ho gayi, is mein fayda hi fayda hai.” He also did 3 more films- Raja Vikram-57 and Nag Champa-58 and Choron ki Baraat-60.

Nemo worked for 19 films of New Theatres and 6 others, totalling 25 films in all. His Filmography – Yahudi ki ladki-33, Karwaan E Hayat-35, Devdas-35, Karodpati-36, Manzil-36, Vidyapati-37, Anath Ashram-37, President-37, Dushman-38, Dharati Mata-38, Abhagin-38, Jawani ki reet-39, Badi Didi-39, Zindagi-40, Haar Jeet-40, Doctor-40, Aandhi-40, Lagan-41, Saugandh-42, Paheli Nazar-45, Shri 420-55, Jaagte Raho-56, Raja Vikram-57, Nag Champa-58 and Choron ki Barat-1960

It is believed that he died in Bombay on 18-8-1960. Cinema, publishing, sports – Mirza Muhammad Begg distinguished himself in everything he touched. And chose to call himself NEMO – a nobody. ( based on information from Filmdom-1946, HFGK, muVyz and an article by Yasir Abbasi ji, with thanks.)

Today’s song is a duet sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Mahendra Kapoor.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 25
————————————————————————————–

This date ten years ago, viz 7 march 2012 saw six songs from six different movies getting covered. The sixth and final song of the day was 5600th song of the day. In other words, the movie completed its 56th century in the blog on this day ten years ago.

Here are the details of the songs that were covered on March 2012:-

5595 Kuchh yaad rahe to sun kar jaa Jawaab (1942) Movie YIPPEED by now
5596 Muhabbat hamaari zamaana hamaara Dulaari(1949) Movie YIPPEED by now
5597 Dil ke sahaare jaan se pyaare Taangawaali(1955) 7 songs out of 9 covered so far
5598 Badi mushqil hai ajab mera dil hai Chingaari(1955) 6 songs out of 8 covered so far
5599 Geet tere saaz ka Inteqam(1969) Movie YIPPEED by now
5600 Main hoon albeli Mujrim Kaun(1966) One song out of 8 covered so far

Three out of six movies whose songs were discussed on that day have since been YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with three movies that are still unYIPPEED and therefore eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today.

“Chingaari”(1955) is one such movie.

“Chingaari”(1955) was directed by S Srivastava for co-operative pictures production, Bombay. The movie had Shekhar, Nalini Jaywant, Leela Misra, Sunalini Devi, Pran etc in it.

This forgotten movie had eight rare songs in it. Six songs have been covered in the past.

As part of Blog Ten Year Challenge, here is the seventh and penultimate song from “Chingaari”(1955). The song is sung by Nalini Jaiwant. Anjum is the lyricist. Music is composed by Manohar Arora.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (02)
————————————–————————————–

Among Geeta Dutt’s endearing songs, there are innumerable duets. Maximum no. of her duets is bound to be with Mohammed Rafi sahab, for the obvious reason that at the times she was most active, coincides with the period when various music directors were having all male songs sung by Rafi sahab. So there are films where Rafi sahab has duets with Lata, Asha and Geeta, plus solos by all of them, with a female duet also thrown it. This would be a typical late 50’s music score. Sometimes a female singer or two are changed and Shamshad Begum is there, with one solo and/or duet.

Looking for major co-singers for Geeta Dutt among the 900 songs already posted in the blog, I have found this list:

Geeta Dutt duets with major playback singers Total duets in the blog
Rafi Geeta Dutt Duets 111
Talat Mehmoood Geeta Dutt duets 21
Lata Geeta Dutt duets 17
Kishore Kumar Geeta Dutt duets 13
Geeta Dutt-Asha Bhonsle duets 25
Mukesh Geeta Dutt duets 14
Shamshad Begam-Geeta Dutt duets 9
Manna Dey Geeta Dutt duets 17
Hemant Kumar Geeta Dutt duets 19
Geeta Dutt Mahendra Kapoor duets 7
G M Durrani Geeta Dutt duets 16
C Ramchandra Geeta Dutt duets 5

While no other singer is crossing the 25 mark in the blog, the duets with Rafi sahab are at 111, so far and counting. I was surprised to find so few with Mukesh at 14 and Shamshad Begum at 9. Mukesh is at 792/932, so the possibility of few more duets with Geeta Dutt is there. Shamshad Begum is at 701/1273, so maybe a few more of these female duets are out there, waiting their turn.

I found this very nice sad melancholy duet of hers with Talat Mehmood. Considering that 386 out of 450 songs of Talat Mehmood are posted in the blog, I am glad to have found not one but two duets of these two. Even then I am optimistic that these two can reach the figure of 25. Presently they are at 21, plus the two song I have found, makes it 23. Let us see where the tally will reach finally.

This song from the film ‘Dr. Z’ is written by Akhtar Romani, and composed by Manohar Arora. These 4 songs of this film are already posted in the blog.

Geeta Dutt has three duets to sing in this film one each with Mohammed Rafi, S. Balbir and Talat Mehmood. With this post all three duets by Geeta Dutt in this movie are posted.

Out of 900 odd songs already posted, I can guess less than 350 are duets. Going by this trend remaining 500 songs of Geeta Dutt, 80+ songs with Rafi appeared unlikely, so as to make them 200. I have counted total 147 songs of these two including group songs. So roughly less than 20 duets of Geeta Dutt-Rafi are still at large, we have to catch them sooner or later :-).

The tune of the song reminds me of this 1961 song.

Song-Dil ko laga ke bhool ki dil ka nishaan mitaa diya (Dr Z)(1959) Singers-Geeta Dutt, Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Akhtar Romani, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

dil ko laga ke bhool ki ee
dil ka nisha mita diya aa
dil ka nishaan mita diya
humne bhari bahaar mein
apna chaman jala diya aa
apna chaman jala diya
(aa aa aa aa)

duniya ki har jafa sahi
kuchh bhi magar na keh sake
duniya ki har jafa sahi
kuchh bhi magar na keh sake
humne wafa ke naam par
jo kuchh bhi thha luta diya aa
jo kuchh bhi thha luta diya(aa aa aa aa aa)

shiqwa kisi se kya karen
marzi hai ye naseeb ki
shiqwa kisi se kya karen
marzi hai ye naseeb ki
chaaha jise mita diya
chaaha jise bana diya
dil ka nishaan mita diya
(aa aa aa aa aa)

leke falak ke chaand ko
koi kare to kya kare
leke falak ke chaand ko
koi kare to kya kare
apna bhi ek chaand thha
duniya ne jo chhupa diya aa
duniya ne jo chhupa diya(aa aa aa aa aa)

kis ko khabar thhi pyaar mein
jal jal ke khaaq honge hum
kis ko khabar thhi pyaar mein
jal jal ke khaaq honge hum
khaaq ka kya jahaan mili
jisko mili uda diya aa
jisko mili uda diya
(aa aa aa aa)
hamne bhari bahaar mein
apna chaman jala diya aa
apna chaman jala diya
(aa aa aa aa)

Blog Day :

4505 Post No. : 16045

On our blog we have as many as eleven movies containing the word ‘Doctor’ in their titles.

Three of these eleven movies have already been YIPPEED. 😊

Here are the status of these movies in the blog:-

Movie Name Year Songs covered/status of the movie on the blog
Naqli Doctor 1933 1 of 14 songs posted
Dr Madhurika 1935 1 of 9 songs posted
Doctor 1941 All Songs covered (Yippeeee’ed)
Dr Kumar 1944 1 of 8 songs posted
Lady Doctor 1944 1 of 10 songs posted

Dr Shaitaan 1960 All Songs covered (Yippeeee’ed)
Dr Vidya 1962 All Songs covered (Yippeeee’ed)
Doctor X 1972 1 of 6 songs posted

Today we are going to listen to a song from the movie ‘Doctor-Z’ of the year 1959.

I had come across a song of this movie sung by Rafi Saab long back (in 2014) when I was contributing lyrics on daily basis 😊 However this song missed out from being covered on the blog.

When I came across this song for the first time I was wondering if there was a movie with such title? But then, why not? we already have a ‘Doctor-X’. Then we have a ‘Dhobi Doctor’, a pure ‘Doctor’ and even a ‘Naqli Doctor’ 😊 (I mean in the list of movies) on the blog.

And one Doctor is ‘shaitaan’ too 😊 (wrong person in the ‘noble’ people’s company. 😊

The company of ‘Lady Doctor (s) -1944’ seems to be genuine with the support of Dr Madhurika, Dr Vidya and Dr Kumar. And I can see one ‘Doctor Ramesh-1949’ yet to join this company and need to check more in details. But I certainly remember ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut-1990’ and that stirs my heart too.

I do not remember to have watched any of the above movies except ‘Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahaani’ which I watched on ‘Doordarshan’, If my memory serves me right.

As per information available in HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) today’s movie ‘Doctor-Z’ had Shakeela, Mahipal, Heeralal, Helen, Vinod Diwani, Krishnakumari, Sundar, Mirza Musharraf, Dalpat, Tun Tun, Nasreen, Shetty, Bhudo Advani, Homi, Roosi, Bismillah, Baburao Pahalwan, Radheshyam, Rafiq, Hanuman, Balaram, Dhondu, M.K. Hasan, Karandikar, Sheetal Kumar and others.

This movie was directed by Jaal for ‘Baaliwala Films’ Bombay. Jaal was also the producer of this movie.

This movie had eights songs composed by Manohar and lyrics were penned by Akhtar Romani- fives songs and Jafar Rahi- one song. HFGK is silent on the lyricists for the remaining two songs.

08 Hello sweety seventeen, kaisi hai tabiyat Akhtar Romani 09.11.2011

Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt, Talat Mahmood, Uma Devi and Balbir had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.10.1959.

From the above table we can see that the first song of this movie was posted on 09.11.2011 and after that second song was posted almost a gap of seven years, but the third song from this movie was posted the next year. Today’s song is being posted after another year, so the last three songs from the movie have been covered at the rate of one song every year. 😊

Today’s song is written by Zafar Rahi and it is sung by Mohd Rafi. Music is composed by Manohar.

I have not yet listened to other songs of this movie but many seems to be already available and I am sure they must be interesting songs to listen and enjoy.

Let us now enjoy this soulful rendition by Rafi Saab and some great heart touching lyrics by Zafar Rahi …

bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani

kuchh aahon ki zubaani
ashqon ki zubaani hai
kuchh aahon ki zubaani

Song-Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani (Dr Z)(1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Zafar Rahi, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

Aa aa aa
Aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani
Ashqon ki zabaani hai
Kuchh aahon ki zubaani
Ashqon ki zabaani hai
Kuchh aahon ki zubaani

Kitni hi ummeedon se sajaai hai ye duniya
Main khush thha ke khud
Maine banaayi hai ye duniya
Lekin teri duniya ne jalaa di meri duniya
Yaad aate hain wo din to
Sulagtaa hai kalejaa
Thhamta nahin aahon ka dhuaan
Seene ke andar
Rukti nahin roke se
In ashqon ki rawaani
Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani

Ujadi huyi basti ka nishaan tak nahin milta
wo aag lagaayi ke dhuaan tak nahin milta
Har geet khushi ka hai
Sisakti huyi fariyaad
Seene se lagaaye huye
Phirta hoon bas ek yaad
Honthon pe kuchh aahen hai
To aankhon me kuchh aansoo
Le de ke yahi reh gayi
ik saari nishaani
Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani

Bhagwaan mujhe dekh ke main
Haq pe ladaa hoon
Sachchaai ka deepak liye
Aandhi mein khadaa hoon
Andhiyaaron se imaan ki
Baaten na chhupengi ee
Thhak jayegaa raahi
Kabhi raahen na thhakengi ee
Sach bol kahin dil tera
Patthhar to nahin hai ae ae ae
Chup chaap jo suntaa hain tu
Insaan ki kahaani
Ashqon ki zabaani hai
Kuchh aahon ki zabaani
Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani
Ashqon ki zubaani hai
Kuchh aahon ki zubaani

Song-Ye dil ki majbooriyaan (Chingaari)(1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

ye dil ki majbooriyan aur ye pyaase nain
uljhan ki is raat mein do dil hain bechain
ye dil ki majbooriyaan

poochh raha hai chaand gagan ka hum kyun hain majboor
poochh raha hai chaand gagan ka hum kyun hain majboor
saath hain donon paas hain donon
phir bhi kitni door
kis dar ne kis soch ne chheena inka chain
ye dil ki majbooriyaan

apni manzil pe aakar bhi
kyun ye dil ghabraaye
apni manzil pe aakar bhi
kyun ye dil ghabraaye
dil ghabraaye
neend na aaye
har aahat chaukaaye
anjaane is des mein kaate kate na rain
ye dil ki majbooriyaan

pyaar agar hai paas to batla
ae duniya naadaan
pyaar agar hai paas to batla
ae duniya naadaan
tujhmein aisa kya hai jispe naaz kare insaan
kuchh na soojhe preet mein jab uljhen do nain
ye dil ki majbooriyaan aur ye pyaase nain
ye dil ki majbooriyaan

Song-Dhak dhak dhadke jiyara laaga rog suhaana(Chingaari)(1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

dhak dhak
dhak dhak
dhak dhak
dhak dhak
dhadke jiyara
dhadke jiyara
laaga rog suhaana
laaga rog suhaana
ghadi ghadi
ghadi ghadi dil mein aaye jaaye
aaye jaaye
ek pardesi anjaana
ho o laaga rog suhaana

kal maine unko dekha
ek sapna din ko dekha
nain mila ke neh lagaa ke
chain ganwaaya
apnon se main aankh churaaun
ho o
aankh churaaun
man bhaaya begaana
ho o
laaga rog suhaana

mere nainon se
mere nainon se dil me samaaye koi
mere honthon ko hansna sikhaaye koi
man mandir mein seekh rahi hoon
seekh rahi hoon
pyaar ke deep jalaana
ho o
laaga rog suhaana

chhup chhup jhaanke taaron se
chain churaaye ishaaron se
paas na aaye
door na jaaye
ji tarsaaye
man ke chor ko dekh na paaun
ko dekh na paaun
mile na koi bahaana
ho o
laaga rog suhaana
dhak dhak
dhak dhak
dhadke jiyara
dhadke jiyara
laaga rog suhaana
laaga rog suhaana

This movie had seven Lata solo songs in it, so it follows that they were all meant for the lead actress viz Nalini Jaiwant. And so we can safely assume that this song was lip synced by Nalini Jaiwant in the movie.

This song, like other songs of the movie, is a forgotten gem.

Song-Raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan (Chingaari)(1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan
lut gaye mere donon jahaan aan
apna paraaya koi nahin
sar pe jhuk aaya aasmaan
aa
raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan
lut gaye mere donon jahaan

dil bechaara toota hua
gham ke haathon loota hua
kheench rahe hain is jaal ko
beraham ?? juda
ae suhaane gham tu bata
main tujhe ab chhupaaun kahaan
raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan
lut gaye mere donon jahaan aan
apna paraaya koi nahin
sar pe jhuk aaya aasmaan

dil ke mehmaan dil se bhi ja
ab tu is duniya mein na aa
bhool ja mujhko tu bhool ja
poochh na mujhse koi wajah
dil bhi mera dil na raha
ab tujhe main basaaun kahaan
raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan
lut gaye mere donon jahaan aan
apna paraaya koi nahin
sar pe jhuk aaya aasmaan aa
raah na soojhe jaaun kahaan
lut gaye mere donon jahaan aan

It is a well-known fact that the singing career of Suman Kalyanpur in Hindi film industry remained under the shadow of Lata Mangeshkar mainly because many in the Hindi film industry felt that her voice was too close to that of Lata Mangeshkar. When Suman Kalyanpur started her playback singing career in 1954, Lata Mangeshkar was already well established in Hindi films. When the choice came for the music directors between the two, producers and/or distributors would pressurize music directors to engage Lata Mangeshkar as her songs were more saleable than that of the new comers. There could be some other reasons also which stunted her career path.
