Today’s song is from the film Baraat-1942.
The film was made by Kirti Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by Dada aka V.M.Gunjal (25-1-1904 to 16-11-1968). The music was by the brothers Ratanlal and Khemraj – a pseudonym taken by Khemchand Prakash to hide his identity legally, because at that time he was under contract with Ranjit Studios from 1940 to 1945. This was an attempt by Khemchand to help Ratanlal learn and become an independent Music Director. However, it helped in a very little way.
There are many such cases in the Hindi film industry, where the family members, e.g. father, brother or a cousin helped the aspirant to get established in the film world. One glaring example can be quoted. Pt. Amarnath Batish helped his younger brothers to make a pair and give music to Prabhat’s film Chaand-1944 in the name of Husnlal-Bhagatram. The elder one, Bhagatram, was already an M.D., but Husnalal was a novice. They started and became a very successful composer pair in the coming years.
In the initial years of the Talkie films, many famous authors, poets and dramatists were attracted towards this new medium. Author as big as Premchand was also a victim of this craze in those years. For film Baraat-1942, a very well known and poet/author from Gujarat – Raskavi Raghunath Bramhabhatt was roped in to write the film’s songs.
The famous Gujarati poet “Raskavi” Raghunath Bramhabhatt was born on 13-12-1892. He was a famous Gujarati poet and also a popular playwright. He was aptly called ‘Rasakavi’ or ‘Poet of rasa’. He began his career by writing erotic poems that became very popular. His plays mainly tackled mythological and historical subjects, such as Buddhadev i.e. ‘The God Buddha’, Sringi rishi i.e. ‘Mountain Sage’, Ajatsatru, Saraswatichandra, Sneh mudra i.e. ‘Ring of Affection’. He followed Sanskrit dramaturgy i.e. a novelty when Shakespearean adaptations ruled the Gujarati stage. His adaptations of Nanalal Kavi’s verse plays and Govardhanram’s novel, Saraswatichandra, were highly appreciated by audiences. He is accepted in literary circles as a major dramatist, a rare recognition for a writer of the old professional theatre. His autobiography Smaran manjari i.e. ‘Cluster of Memories’ in 1955 traces the history of Gujarati theatre over three decades beginning from 1910.
Darpana’s productions of his play Kalyan rajya i.e. ‘Benevolent Kingdom’ in 1962 points to his ability to attract experimental theatre. Raghunath Brahmbhatt died on 11-7-1983. He wrote lyrics for just 6 Hindi films- Do deewane-36, Baaraat-42, Mera Gaon-42, Ashirwad-43, Bhakta Bilwamangal-48 and Roop sundari-49.
The year 1942 was a transition year for the Hindi film industry. Many well known actors, directors etc left their studio jobs to start their own studios. Among them were, Wadia brothers, V.Shantaram, Ashok kumar, A.R.Kardar, Mehboob Khan, Debaki Bose, P.C.Barua, Vasant desai, C. Ramchandra, Ninu Mujumdar, Kamal dasgupta etc. Many new artists made their Debuts in Hindi films. Some of them were Nurjahan,Ramesh Gupta, Qamar jalalabadi, Suraiya, Hemant kumar, Manna dey, Jagmohan Sursagar, Bharat Bhushan, madhubala etc.
One of these was actress/singer Kaushalya. Kaushalya was born at Lucknow on 12-12- 1929. She was the daughter of the famous dancer Lachhoo Maharaj and actress Daya Devi. Being brought up in the house of dancer and actor, Kaushalya picked up Dance, Music and acting very early. She appeared as a child artiste in films from 1936, when she was just 7 year old. She worked in 11 films as a child artiste. After the film Devbala-38, she did roles in Bhole bhale and Uski Tamanna-both in 1939, made by Sagar Movietone. She even sang in both films.
Then came films like Darshan and Ghar ki laaj, both 1941, and Baraat, Bharat milap, Rai Saheb, Station master and Swapna, all in 1942. The work poured on her till 1946, when she got married to a boy from Calcutta, when she had gone there to do films. After marriage she found it difficult to work in films, but continued for some more films, till her last film Ek Do Teen-1953.
In all Kaushalya acted in 27 films and sang more than 100 songs in about 35 films, in her short career. As a Heroine she had worked with Prithviraj Kapoor, Ulhas, Kumar, Ishwarlal, Trilok Kapoor etc.
Film Baraat-1942 had a cast of Shobhana Samarth, Harish, Manmohan,Kaushalya, Mirza Musharraf, Ram pyari, Nayampalli, Vatsala Kumthekar, Putlibai, Shobha devi, Prakash aka Hashmat, Sankatha Prasad etc. many of these artists were the spillovers from the Silent film era. Slowly, most of them disappeared too.
The story of the film Baraat-1942 was…….
The story of the film Baraat-42 was that of a Love pair who get separated and in the end get united, when the Lover Boy brings a Baraat to the Girl’s house. It is also a story of 2 friends who get distanced due to wealth. The story is….Jwala Prasad and Kabirchand are 2 friends staying as neighbours. Jwala has a son Savan and a daughter Lalima. Kabir has 2 daughters- Nayna and Kiran.
Savan and Nayna are betrothed in childhood. By the time they grow up, Jwala Prasad becomes very rich and Kabir remains poor. This creates a distance between the two families and also the marriage of their children is also in jeopardy. The lovers are banned from seeing each other.
The film is full of emotional scenes and improbable situations. Dada Gunjal’s direction is unable to fill in the gaps in the storyline. The story brings changes in the mindset of Jwala Prasad and finally, he agrees to the marriage.
Today’s song is 83 years old. It is sung by a 13 year old Kaushalya and a 24 year old Rajkumari. Enjoy…..
